05x01 - The North Island of New Zealand with Josh Brolin

Post by bunniefuu »

Can you hear me? Hello.
Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello.

Listen, it's not exactly
the start I had in mind either.

Great show, bro.

But if there's
anyone who's down.

For a little off-the-cuff
adventure, it's josh brolin.

So how was the ride, honey?

Well, we didn't actually ride.

We got around the block.

There was this house
that we broke down at,

And we ended up
hanging out with the locals.

I think that they put.

Some acid in our
coffee or something.

So the show is called what?

The show is called "park."

The show is called
"broken down on the side.

Of the road with Norman reedus."

And for a ride on
the other side of the world.

In a place that knows no bounds,

He's the perfect
partner in crime.

I'm excited to show you the
north island of new Zealand.

- Yeah!
- Alright, hit it!

Here we go!

Yeah, baby.

We're all masters
of our own fate.

Each of us decides
what path to follow,

But this life, it's not
for the faint-of-heart.

It's the risk-takers
who move us forward,

Those who knock
conventional wisdom on its head.

And seek out the unknown.

It's what brought
me to new Zealand,

The edge of the world.

Whoa.

Level ,

Welcome to the
sugar club's skywalk.

Auckland's sky
tower is the tallest structure.

In the southern hemisphere,

And from meters up,

Provides a panorama
of the north island.

That you might
say is breathtaking.

Alright. This is terrifying.

It's pretty, but okay, cool.

I can't even look down.

This is nuts.

I hate heights, and this
is the first thing we do.

sh**t it quick.

No, gonna throw up, yeah.

Okay, cool.

Can I come in now? My god.

Yeah. Thanks for the scare.
I'm glad I had a big breakfast.

Now, it's probably a good
time to check out the city.

From a different vantage point,

One that's not
gonna make me barf.

Now, this is more my speed,
thrill-seeking at sea level.

Got me rolling.

It's not a bad
way to k*ll a Friday.

My guides... Jared
turner, fossie amosa,

And Robbie magasiva.

Of the dirty rotten thespians...

This is the life right here.

- Yeah, man.
- You know what I mean?

Welcome to Auckland.
That's why we live here.

Not mad at this at all.

A pack of new Zealand
actors with an affinity.

For the open road and,
apparently, the water.

This is freaking awesome!

New zealand's long
been on the bucket list,

And with this
heart-stopping adventure.

And convergence of culture,

The north island is a
great place to dive in.

Whoo-hoo-hoo!

Whoa-ho!

Alright. Whoo!

That was cool, that bungee jump.

- Yeah. It was good?
- Yeah. It's cool.

Good timing.

What sets new Zealand
apart from the world.

Is because, I guess, we
are apart from the world.

We're so far away from anywhere.

We've got
everything... volcanoes,

Sandy beaches, hipster culture,
and the most amazing people.

So what's Auckland known for,

The biggest city in new Zealand?

So a third of the
country lives in Auckland.

We live in a
multicultural country,

And people are respected.

We have the
highest Polynesian population.

- In the world here in Auckland.
- Wow.

- I didn't know that.
- It's, like, about %.

You probably can't tell,
but I'm Polynesian, as well.

- Are you really?
- Yeah.

My dad's what they
call palagi, white.

New zealanders have just got.

That active, abundant energy,
and we'll give anything a go.

We've got such a
beautiful landscape.

And a lot of
awesome things to do.

It's actually quite nice?

Auckland is a really cool city.

What's it like acting out here?

Are sets just super fun
and everyone's cool and...

It's great.

I think we've got a
really good community.

- Because we all know each other.
- Yeah.

Particularly when it
comes to auditions.

You know, we'll
help each other out.

I've had the options of
going overseas for work,

But I don't ever
want to leave here.

I mean, we've got the
harbor. We've got the beaches.

We've got the forests, you know,

And it's a really
relaxed place to live.

That kind
of says it all, really, hey?

Auckland... city of sails.

City of sails.

Yeah. It's beautiful here.

And just like that, our
kiwi ride is off and running.

Let's get out of this rat race.

Following the waikato river.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna
meet josh brolin in Hamilton.

We'll check out hobbit
holes and glowworms.

Before reaching the
Maori heartland in rotorua.

Then it's up to the
coromandel peninsula.

For a celebration of
all things motorsport...

A -day, -kilometer
exploration.

Of the vast extremes that
make up the north island.

Until recent decades,

The people of new Zealand
lived in majestic isolation,

Cut off from the rest of the
world by infinite distances.

From Auckland in the north,

It's , miles to the
nearest landmass, Australia.

Getting to new
Zealand has never been easy.

, years ago,

When Polynesians rode
ashore in search of new territory,

It was the first time this place
had been seen by human eyes,

And Maori tribes
thrived in isolation.

Until the British showed
up and tried to take it over,

But the treaty of waitangi.

Established shared
ownership of the land.

And gave Maoris
rights as British subjects,

Establishing new Zealand
as a multicultural nation.

Today, the plight of
indigenous people.

Is a narrative common
throughout the world,

And although the Maori
have fared better than others,

I'm meeting a group dedicated
to helping those left behind.

- How's it going?
- Brother norm, hey?

I've heard a lot
about you, my friend.

Have you had the Maori greeting?

I haven't, no. Have you?

It's called the hongi. Okay.

Now, the hongi is the
touching... pressing of the nose.

And the forehead,
the breath of life.

And it's the one
vision, you know.

The foreheads, they touch.

Good to meet you.

Nice to meet...
welcome to the family.

Thank you so much.

- And this is china.
- Hi, china.

You can do it to girls, too.

Norman, nice to meet you.

China, nice to meet
you. It's a pleasure.

You brought the sunshine, mate.

What's up? Hello.

How is it going?

Here we go.

k*lled it, bro. Welcome.

Thank you.

His name is house.

House, because he
is big like a house.

Nice to meet you,
house. Nice to meet you.

How long have you
guys been a club here?

- Well...
- Six years this week.

Six years. Wow.

We were looking at
over members,

And that's just bikes alone.

And tribal nations, where...
Tell me about the name.

Well, tribal nations
is a nation of all tribes,

And so we've got people
from all walks of life here.

We've got a lot of guys
here that have actually,

You know, been to prison,
have done the hard yards,

Have been in, you
know, maximum security.

They've come through
it, and, you know,

They're just looking for
their sense of whanau.

And just acceptance, really.

Basically with us, it's
about unity amongst people.

And all ethnicities
and standing as one,

And so that's what
brings us together.

That's so cool. Yes.

I don't know if you know much
about new Zealand history,

But we've had
years of colonization,

And as a result of that,
the indigenous people,

The Maori, are suffering.

The su1c1de rate
is just off-the-scale.

Part of the tribal nations
thing is making a noise,

Riding on motorcycles.

And supporting other
community groups.

Just to raise
awareness about su1c1de.

And get people talking about it.

And is unity,

And together, we're
here to help each other,

So we know you're
gonna be riding the ride,

So we really want to know
that you're gonna be safe,

So I'd like to give
you your own tiki.

It's a good-luck
charm. It's yours.

You're too cool.
Did you make this?

Yes. Wow.

Especially for you.

This is so cool.
Thank you so much.

So that's a present on
behalf of all the tribal nations.

Thank you guys.

Thank you. This is awesome.

I appreciate it.

We often pay lip service to
breaking down boundaries,

But for people
like tiki and china,

To change the narrative
and ride for unity.

And bring people together,

It's an act that speaks to the
greater spirit of new Zealand.

I'm gonna get
kicked out of hobbiton.

So let's just see if
we can get in trouble.

Do you have any pie, lamb pie?

- Is this sticky?
- Yeah.

You've got to tell me
about this smell that I smell.

I see the smoke
coming out of the ground.

As long as new Zealand has
been here, that's been bubbling.

What the.

Holy balls!

When tribal
nations gear up to take over.

The new Zealand streets,
you know it's for a good cause.

Case in point, it's time to eat.

This is the stuff.

This is awesome.

We're a bit of a
motley crew, ain't we?

Yes, absolutely.
We're motley, alright.

This is awesome fun.

Yeah.

Look at the smile on the face,

Not that I can see the smiling.

I can feel it. Yeah.

Feel the spirit.

Because you guys do a
lot of stuff with charities.

And so forth, how are
the police here with you?

They must love you.

I think they're getting
used to us now.

Auckland is known.

As one of the world's
most diverse cities,

But the same holds true
across much of the north island.

It's an influence
that's undeniable.

At hamilton's
Friday night market.

So you guys come
here every Friday?

My. The selection
is just unbelievable.

Ooh. I've never
had a mussel fritter.

Cream paua is also.

An exceptionally delicious dish.

Is it a dessert? World-famous.

It's kind of
like seafood chowder.

I'm on vacation.
I'm going for it.

We're just waiting for you
to buy it so that we can eat it.

So that you can eat it, okay.

My god. That's delicious.

It's nice, yeah.

It's like a clam
chowder on steroids.

- Yeah.
- This place is okay.

It's a south
African street food.

Wow. This looks really good.

- South African street food.
- Yes.

Somebody better order
something before I end up.

With five hands worth of food.

Part of, you,
know, Maori culture,

When they were warring,
having a big celebration,

It was always an
exchange of food,

So if you...

You'd show your appreciation
by putting on a big feast.

We eat a lot of
food on the show.

Yeah?

And then we sit down and ride a
motorcycle, then we eat more food.

People think that
you burn it off,

But you don't because
you just sit back down.

You just go like this.
That's your exercise.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

My god, baby doughnuts?

We need baby doughnuts.

You came all the way to new
Zealand to buy doughnuts?

Yeah. But look, they're
little baby doughnuts, though.

Can I get that? Baby doughnuts.

How you doing?
Fine. How are you doing, man?

I'm doing good. Doughnut?

I want to try
one of those, mate.

That's spicy? Doughnuts, anyone?

They're hot. Watch out.

A thousand baby
doughnuts in a box.

Doughnut? Anybody
want a doughnut?

I love you, too.

That's very sweet.

My god. Thank you.

Of course.

Everyone say kia or a.

Kia or a.

- Say kia or a ano.
- Kia or a ano.

- Tihei Maori or a.
- Tihei Maori or a.

As day one ends,

I can't help but
think of tribal nations.

As a microcosm
for the north island,

A diverse group guided by
a unique blend of tradition.

And a mutual
respect of fellow man,

But tomorrow brings brolin.

I'd better get my rest.

There's something about
new Zealand that draws you in,

An allure that captures
the imagination,

A place so far off, it
almost feels unattainable,

So when an opportunity
comes to experience it,

There's no way
you're gonna pass it up.

I've been a fan of josh brolin.

Ever since he was
in "the goonies."

Yeah.

When I reached out to
him through mutual friends.

And invited him to new
Zealand, he said yes immediately.

I'll take the helmet off.

How are you, man? I'm great.

I mean, it takes a certain
kind of guy to jump on a plane...

Dude, I'm so jet-lagged.

Go halfway across the world.

And get on a bike
hours later.

Josh is that kind of guy.

I feel like I'm just kind of
on your tail this morning.

We have a good day.
We're going to hobbiton.

Right. You ever
heard of hobbiton?

Yeah. No.

I've never heard of it. Of
course not, but we're going.

But we're going... Okay.

And then glowworms after that...

Good... Which is exciting.

Which I don't know what
that is, but I can't wait.

Yeah. It's awesome. Good.

Yeah. Yeah. We'll have fun.

Yeah. You ready
for this? Yes. I am.

Let's do it. Thank
you for coming.

You got it.

New Zealand, here we come.

This is beautiful.

This is like kind
of where I'm from,

Paso Robles, and
then Tuscany mixed.

I love being out here, dude.

Yeah. Like, seriously.

Now, josh and I have a
lot of the same friends,

But we had never met, and
they swore I'd love the guy.

Does anybody call you norm?

No. Nobody has
ever called me norm.

Yeah. Norm is kind of a...

It's like a... somebody
you complain about.

"Norm."

Are you josh or Joshua?

What do you think?

Joshua, josh...

That's what I was gonna say,

But then you did the
hip thing, and you me up.

Do you remember,
like, a couple years,

Maybe years ago,

Every single actor
had a six-pack?

Yeah. Yeah.

It was, like, a prerequisite
to get an acting job,

Is you have to have a
six-pack. Like me, like me.

Yes. Yes.

Like, you, maybe
it's different, man.

You're a famous guy, you know.

You're on a really huge show.

I still have the mentality
that I'm struggling.

And nobody knows who I am.

We're taking a -kilometer
trip down state highway one.

To the outskirts of matamata,

Where we're gonna
reach Alexander farm.

Or, as it's now more
commonly known, hobbiton.

Wow. This is a thing.

Hobbiton is a movie
set that was created.

By peter Jackson and his crew.

To come and film
the "lord of the rings."

"lord of the rings"
definitely put us on the map.

It was the first time, I think,

That all eyes were
on new Zealand.

With the
"lord of the rings" trilogy,

Peter Jackson pushed
the bounds of cinema,

Forging a newfound love for
medieval fantasy adventure,

Establishing new Zealand as
a destination for film-making...

Welcome to hobbiton.

- Yeah!
- Yeah!

And some very devoted fans.

So this actually
where they did it?

Yeah.

So I see smoke up
there, so does that mean.

People are actually
living in hobbit holes?

Isn't that what they're
called, hobbit holes?

Either that or goblins
getting real stoned.

This just makes me
really uncomfortable.

Yeah. I feel like mickey
mouse is gonna pop out.

Can we go rogue or are
we stuck with this guy?

It's like there's something.

Kind of serial-k*ller about it.

Let's escape.

It is kind of amazing, though.

- Alright. You know what?
- It.

I'm just going. I don't care.

I wonder if you can
go inside these things.

I don't know. Should we try?

So let's just see if
we can get in trouble.

This is kind of cool, actually.

Not bad. I live...

Better than my first
new york apartment.

That's what I was gonna say.

This was my first
apartment in Venice.

It's actually... This is
kind of more well-built.

That's cool.

I kind of want to take
a in here, but I won't.

Bro, I'll stay here
for the next hour,

And then the tours will come by,

And then we just can film
the reactions of people.

Off the cruise ship in Auckland.

And then if somebody
tries to kick us out,

You and I should just
run... Let's do it, yeah.

As fast as we
can, just run away.

Grab that cheese with
us. Look at these clothes.

What is that? Should we go up?

Yeah. Let's go up.

That's adorable, right?

What? What is it?
It's a little tiny shirt.

Shh, shh, shh.

Hello, sir.

Do you have any
pie, any lamb pie?

Gonna get kicked
out of hobbiton.

Could you point us in the
direction of mordor, please?

You're going the
wrong way, guys.

What? See, if you, like, wave,

People will know who you are.

If I wave, nobody will know.

Watch.

See, this is
charisma right here.

Look. These guys are great.

Is this part of the thing or...

Is this... You are looking
like Norman reedus.

- Sometimes.
- I said that to him, too.

What are these called, dirndls?

- Lederhosen.
- Lederhosen.

- Lederhosen.
- That's what I meant.

Get in here with these
guys. Do you mind?

I mean, we want a
selfie with you, actually.

This is so good. One,
two, one, two, three, four.

He won't even touch
me. I don't know what's up.

We're just here
looking for fans.

You're shaking.

Um, a little bit.

I'm shaking, as well.

So am I.

- Okay.
- Too much coffee.

I spent all day with him,
and I can't stop shaking.

Very strange.

I'm telling you, man.

They see you,

And they associate
it with success...

Yeah, right.

And they see me, and they
think I'm gonna rob them.

- Are you Norman reedus?
- Sometimes.

Hi. Nice to meet you.

You, too.

Welcome to hobbiton.

Norman owns hobbiton.

I am a hobbit.

Hobbiton!

You got zero replies.

I told you, man, looking
for fans everywhere,

And there's none.

Expect the unexpected...

An all-too-common
axiom of the road,

But so far, in new Zealand,

That might just apply more
to hanging out with josh.

Than riding in the land
of the long, white cloud.

What's wrong with you?

I like you. You're
like a little kid.

It's like one of
those stunt things.

"Matrix."

Shoo! Shoo! Shoo!

This is where I pull
out my samurai sword.

Yah!

New Zealand is
like being in another world,

And that's not just hyperbole.

Isolated until recent history,

This place still holds a
wide array of animals,

Plants and even insects that
you just can't find anywhere else.

Down this road, there's
phosphorescent worms.

Dude, I'm gonna steal one.

I'm gonna take it home with me.

We're heading into
the waitomo caves.

To see a luminous species
only found on the north island.

Check this out.

- Will they bite him?
- Yeah. Watch.

What?

That's crazy.

I see you. Now
you are behind me.

- That was great.
- They're so cool.

Did you see?

His put his hand right there,
and the mouth opened up.

Like, if that thing closes
down, it doesn't open again.

Really?

The stream is
known as the pukatea,

And they named the river, too,
which, when you break it down,

It kind of means,
"the hazard trail,".

And it was an old pathway
for the early Maori people.

Back in the day.

Has he ever bitten you, the eel?

Yep. Yeah.

That's how we use to catch
them when we were kids.

- So...
- Helmets galore.

We've got some
helmets here to put on.

Do you have one
really, really big one?

Is this the only place there's
glow-in-the-dark worms?

No. You can find them more.

Anywhere where
there's a bit of moisture.

You can see them outside,
little patches here and there.

And what makes
them glow in the dark?

Is it phosphorescence or...

Yeah, yeah, sort
of a basic chemistry.

Of bioluminescence.

It's the poop that's
fluorescent, right?

Wow. Yeah.

The south end of a northbound
worm is what's glowing,

If you know what I mean.

- Yeah.
- Very well-put, man.

Let's go look for glowworms.

Whoa.

Are these animal prints?

Stalactites dripping
in the holes.

Those are the...

- That's the eels.
- -Delicious.

No way, man.

Look. You see above us here?

No way. Wow.

If you'll turn off your
lights for a minute,

I'll see if I can... Yeah.

They're part of a
cycle of becoming a fly,

Glowworms... No way.

So what you see up
there is the maggot stage.

Yeah. Great.

Well, how cool is that?

Well, they take about
months from an egg.

Until they become an adult fly,

And this is the stage
two in the cycle.

Stage two in how
many stages, four?

Four, yeah. Their food
supply is any flying insects.

That get attracted
to their lights,

And underneath them,
you can see the fishing lines.

This is how they
catch their food.

What is that? That's
the fishing lines...

Yeah. So basically like webs?

Yes. Is this sticky?

Yeah. Can I touch it?

You can try, you know, see.

Whoa.

Aah! It burns.

Ph ... ph , if you
know your acid...

Look at that.

Yeah. Keep it off.

Wow.

Norman?! Norman?!

k*ll, k*ll, k*ll, k*ll, k*ll.

k*ll, k*ll. Ka, ka, ka, ka.

This is fascinating,
man, really.

I want to think they're
some kind of delicacy.

That you can eat and
have visions for hours.

Feel like going
for a little boat ride?

Let's do it. I
would love to do it.

Come on, Norman.

Look at that, man.

Wow. This is so cool.

So cool.

The glowworms, they're
deaf, and they're blind.

They react to vibration
in their threads.

It's like "apocalypse now."

We're coming to meet our people.

It's like an... It's
like an opera.

That's what it feels like.

I so wish I could
sing opera now.

Manny. I know.

I've got a thing for Manny, man.

The Mannys of the world are all

I really want to hang
out with and you.

This is episode one...

Episode one.

James brolin.

Wait. That's his dad.

Jason brolin.

Ladies and
gentlemen, Jason brolin!

Leaving waitomo,

We're headed to the tribal
home of the Maori people,

On a -kilometer journey
east into the town of rotorua.

You're an ' s guy. Were
you ever into punk rock?

Yes. Yes.

We used to go down
to godzilla's in I.A.,

And we'd see circle jerks.

We'd see black flag.

There was always one
band that each of us.

Listened to secretly that
you couldn't tell anybody.

Because you'd get
the kicked out of you,

And my secret band was journey.

Sade was my secret band, dude.

I went to a Sade concert
with a shaved head.

And a trenchcoat with a
bottle underneath my jacket.

All by myself with
my combat boots on.

I was like, "you can't
tell me anything else.

She's amazing."

For generations, Maori culture
was marginalized in new Zealand,

But in the living
villages of rotorua,

Maori way of life has been
preserved and renewed.

Is this, like, Maori territory?

Hell yeah.

We're headed to meet a
few of its locals to learn why.

Hi. I love you, brother.

How are you doing?

The Maoris were here
long before the white people.

They're people
with such kind of deep spirit,

Lots of stories,
lots of history.

All Maori tie
themselves to the land,

To the water and to the sky.

They are a really important
part of the fiber of new Zealand.

You've got to tell me
about this smell that I smell.

I see the smoke
coming out of the ground.

Or the steam or
whatever that is.

It's sulfur.

Wow. So you
have the ring of fire,

Which starts.

Straight through the
center of the north island...

Wow... Which is this here.

So that's why the geothermal
activity is so prevalent here.

Maori have been here since
approximately -odd years.

Wow, man.

And then, well, we traveled
from Polynesia by boat.

So, you know, coming
here, you freeze your tits off,

So we wanted somewhere
where it's nice and warm.

That's why this particular area
was scavenged and settled,

So this is probably one of the
oldest villages in new Zealand.

Cruise over here. Yeah.

So some of the local
people still use it to cook in,

So it's coming out of the ground
at about degrees Celsius.

Does this
k*ll fish, this right here?

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

It kills it, or it cooks it.

It cooks it, yeah.

As long as new
Zealand has been here,

That's been bubbling.

So what is
this slime right here?

Is that... I mean, it's
obviously from that,

- But is this sulfur?
- That's just...

- That slime here?
- Yeah.

That's fentus awatus
gagus finagus.

You made that up. Sir?

Is that really what it's called?

Yeah. Obviously.

The whole village aspect.

And why the Maori chose to live.

In a settlement like this.

Is because, mate, you
had communal living.

Everybody that
lives here is related.

Right.

We're all still what we
call whanau, or family, so...

It's a "family"
village. That's it.

You come down
here, and you know.

Your auntie, your uncles and...

It's still now to where it was

years ago, years ago.

Exactly. It just
looks different.

Yeah. That's it.

One thing
you'll find with Maori.

Is, yeah, we celebrate our dead.

- That's how you keep them alive.
- Yeah.

This particular site
here is a tribute.

To those that went to w*r,
that fought for this country,

World w*r I, world
w*r ii, Malaya, Vietnam.

- All veterans?
- Yeah, all veterans.

What you're seeing
here is actually to signify,

Obviously, two chiefs
that have gone to battle.

You see they're holding up high.

What are those there?

Tikis, right, and
it's your eyes are wide open.

You're viewing all your life,
and then your tongue is out.

As an expression that
you're unafraid of it.

Is that correct? Yeah.

- Good.
- That's right.

And then, who is in
the middle up there?

So that will be the guardian.

Of this particular area. Wow.

Globalization has been deemed.

The great culture-k*ller,

But as we end our
second day in new Zealand,

It's apparent here the
past is not just honored,

It persists.

Now, I find
that indigenous people.

Have so much more
knowledge and respect.

For their histories
than anybody else.

Norman!

I screamed my ass off...

The whole time? The whole time.

What the... My god!

Who do you think
is taller, me or you?

I think you, just
by a few inches.

I do love the way that
this was sh*t, though,

Because they really
made Bilbo and Frodo.

Look tiny next to Gandalf.

It's a crazy way they sh*t it.

You can put Norman
in the front, for example,

And if you crouch
as small as you can,

And he goes like this,
you can make it look like

Norman is gonna stand on
you. That will never happen.

Can we do that? If you want to.

Yeah. Who wants to be tall?

Who wants to be
short? I'll be short.

- Work it.
- You've got it.

Show me sassy.
Work it for me, josh.

How is that? It looks like.

He's more sexually
into that than anything.

I like the seductive
pose from Norman.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

If I'm gonna go out,
I'm gonna go out in style.

Yeah. I'm super-tiny.

That's kind of great.

Right on. Very cool.

You're awesome. Alright,
guys. Good to meet yous.

My god.

Look at how beautiful
the morning is. Jesus!

Good morning, new Zealand.

How do you feel,
sore? Yeah, a little sore.

We rode a lot yesterday.

For a guy who's ridden, like,

An incredible
amount his entire life,

I was actually surprised
because my coccyx is sore.

Yeah.

Day three, bruised coccyx,

Egoes and all, onward we ride.

Leaving the Maori
heartland behind,

It's kilometers up
the eastern shoreline.

Until we reach the
beachside town of hahei.

I'm excited to
see these old cars.

I love old cars. Yeah, me too.

It's nice to finally hang
and ride around with you.

It is, and you better
suck it up, man,

Because it's never
gonna happen again.

I'm gonna write a memoir,
"my two days with Norman."

Racing is so popular
in new Zealand.

Because that's ingrained
in us to want to go fast.

And to push the limits.

Adventure sports,
extreme sports,

Motorsports are so
popular in new Zealand.

Our sports are important to us.

As much as the food
that we have on our tables.

It's something.

That we've always
just had in our dna.

Dude, this is gorgeous property.

This is literally,
to me, paradise.

I'm right behind you, bro.

Lead me into destiny.

The leadfoot
festival is the brainchild.

Of racing legend rod millen,

One part competition,
two parts spectacle.

His mile-long hill
climb brings together.

Racing's best to burn a little
rubber and leave their mark.

I've been racing
bikes and stuff.

Since I was about years old.

Which car do you drive here?

So this run, I'm in
the stadium truck.

That's about
seconds up the hill?

No. I've taken a few shortcuts,

And I'm still
seconds off rob's time.

Wow.

And we've got a drift car,
as well, in another batch.

By the time we're at the
top, we've done a set of tires,

Which is about ,
bucks worth of tires...

Wow.

About liters
worth of gas. Yeah.

Then, you can see,
like, the variety of cars.

- You have, like, off-roaders...
- Yeah.

Quad bikes, you know, older
starks, stadium super-trucks.

It's cool to see the heritage.

And the drivers
where you know it...

Yeah. Yeah... And
then they brake.

You see guys going
through hay bales,

And everyone is pushing
because everyone.

Wants to win because
it's a competition.

Hey, man. I'm
josh. Hi, josh, Rhys.

How are you? Nice to meet you.

How are you? Norman. Nice
to meet you. Nice to meet you.

Thanks for doing this, man.

No problem. I'm glad
you guys made it down.

Rhys millen
is a drifting champion,

One of the top stunt drivers
in all of Hollywood, and yeah.

He's rod's millen's son.

He's gonna take us for a spin.

In rod's rally-winning
Mazda rx .

So, you know, not a lot
of horsepower, about .

It's a rear-wheel drive.

And so, it's sort of lively.

It's lively. It's lively
for a small car.

Yeah. I love it.

If you're laughing, that
means it's really lively.

- And if Rhys is driving it...
- How scared should I be?

Should I go to the
bathroom right now?

No. I would. I just did.

- Josh, do you want to go first?
- Go for it, man.

Are you sure? Absolutely.
You should go for it first.

Okay. Alright.

It's kind of like the motorcycle
suit I wear in the winter.

You actually don't
need this. They're kid...

No. I'm kidding. No.
I'm kidding. I'm joking.

You need it.

That looks good. Let me see it.

You look good, actually, man.

I feel pretty
comfortable in this.

Can I fix you, please?
I already did it wrong.

I already did it wrong.

Mom.

Do you ever go au
naturel under here?

I mean, I would.

Someone feed my cat
if this doesn't work out.

Good luck, pal. Good luck.

I love you, man.

I hope he gets scared.

This? Hold onto this?

No. Should I hold on to this?

Yeah, try that one. No, no.

We're on the line. You ready?

Here we go, first gear
clutch, slip a little bit...

What? ...And we're off.

What the holy balls!

Fourth gear, down into the
brake gear here, third gear.

What the... My god!

And we're going third, fourth...

Holy.

And fifth around here. Okay.

That was good.

What?

Holy.

You're insane!

My god. You're a crazy person.

Second, third...

Second, third,
through the first.

And there's the finish line.

Whoa. My god.

My god.

Forget "Mario
kart." that's crazy.

And for insurance's purposes,

We never went above
miles an hour.

- Wow.
- Bravo.

Wow. Holy balls.

I'm gonna take a Xanax
just to calm down a little bit.

There we go.

It was crazy fun, crazy fun.

Norman!

Yeah!

It may look like total chaos,

But drifting is the
ultimate test of precision,

A modern battle of
man versus machine.

A symphony of high-speed,
pinpoint execution.

And a whole lot of style...

You're the star here, man.

And from the sound of it,

I think josh finally
got his opera.

That was great.
Thank you so much.

Thank you, brother. Thank you.

I literally just orgasmed
for a full minute.

I got strangely calm.

I screamed my ass off...

The whole time? The whole time.

It's either total
conviction of trust,

Or you're gonna your pants.

He said he screamed
the whole time?

Yeah. Like a freak.

Right from the start.
That was amazing.

Thank you for
not hitting a bush.

No problem. Yeah.

Look at that, man.

Wow.

Look at that little
island out there,

Little "James bond" island.

You know what I love
about new Zealand.

Is they just call
a spade a spade,

So you see signs that just have.

Hot water beach.

Yeah. I saw that back there.

We're going to the
beach with the hot water.

You know it's that, for sure.

Everybody has
told me I'd like you.

All our mutual friends are like,

"you guys are gonna hit it off."

But you still don't know yet.

Now, I'm gonna
call them tonight.

And tell them all
to go themselves.

New Zealand
is a natural wonderland,

And in no small part due to
its location along the ring of fire.

, years ago, volcanoes
created these islands.

And today, this place remains
a hotbed of geothermal activity.

Fascinating.

Wow.

If I lived here, I would
be on the beach,

Renting shovels to tourists.

I'm gonna go to the bathroom.

Can you get that hole ready?

"Spade hire," look.

You can get David
spade here with bucks.

David spade. Hey.
How are you doing?

Josh. I'm Derek.

How you doing?
How's it going? Norman.

Hi. How are you? Good.

Can we borrow a couple shovels?

You certainly can. Is that okay?

Where do we go,
and what do you do?

You see the rocks that go down.

To the beach down there? Yep.

The first spring in front
of there is degrees.

Right.

And then, there's a
gap of about meters,

And the second
one is degrees.

It's like, can you boil an egg
on the beach down there?

If it's , you can.

That's the second
spring down, you can.

If you leave it there long
enough, you can certainly.

So it's hot-hot.
Yeah, it's hot-hot.

You won't be able to
stand in it. Okay, got it.

We should have brought
some cup noodles or something.

I'm gonna go dig a
hole. I'll see you later.

Catch you later.

It's hot. It's,
like, for-real hot.

Hot, hot, hot, hot.

Pick those knees up.

I'm short-legged, man.

This must be the
popular area, right here.

This is a serious hole here.

They said you should do
about feet in diameter.

And then, like,
about feet down.

- This is a city of holes.
- Alright.

We could do that.

Can we just borrow
someone else's?

Yeah. I kind of want to.

My god. Are you "walking dead"?

- Man.
- Yeah. Yeah.

Hi. How are you?

Hi.

I very like "walking dead."

Hey, Jason.

Jason, I've got
people over here.

Can I get a picture?

Yes.

I love new Zealand, by the way.

Yeah. It's good stuff.

Great.

I need about a -foot
hole, please. Thank you.

I'll take a picture of myself.

- Hey.
- I very like "walking dead."

Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.

Yeah. Yeah.

Send it to my wife or something,
you know what I mean?

I know. I know.

I know. Nice to meet you.

Hey, brother. Where's
the hole, dude?

Have you been working
on the hole, or what?

Yeah.

Norman reedus, man.

Yeah, a pleasure, yeah.

You, Norman reedus.

Get in there, bro. Get in there.

You got it? You good?

I got it. I'm all good.

I'm all good. My god.

It's so hot. You're right.

It's... Wow.

It's coming up from the ground.

It's like liquid-hot magma.

I think we pulled it off.

Here we go, mr. Reedus.

Hold my hand. Get in.

Don't hurt yourself. Liability.

I mean, I don't want
to get my flip-flops wet.

I don't want to get
my flip-flops wet.

Here we go. It's cold.

Let's all hear it for him, okay?

Yay. Yes!

Yay. Yay, Norman.

Thank you. Thank you.

Go, Norman. Thank
you. Thank you.

That was amazing.

Yes. Yes.

If you don't get
an Emmy for that,

I don't know what
you're gonna do.

It isn't often that
life exceeds your expectations,

But you come here,
and you'll find that.

There's nothing ordinary
about new Zealand.

It's a land of adventure
and innovation,

A cultural mosaic defined
by its unequivocal extremes,

A place that could only exist
on the edge of the world...

That could not have gone better.

That was the most
fun I've had so far.

We'll see.

And there's no one I would
have rather experienced it all.

With than Jason...
Justin... josh brolin,

Except, I don't
know, maybe Sade.

That was awesome.
That was awesome.

That's why I tried to
do, but I couldn't do.

You know why? Because
I'm not Norman reedus.
