01x05 - Mission 5: I Never Promised You a Space Garden

I'm glad to see you're becoming more accustomed to microgravity.

However, I feel I should remind you that Mission Control does have a live feed to the ISS at all times.

-Hi, Snoopy! -You still got it, Snoopy.

-Sweet moves. -Looking good.

[chuckles]

[birds laughing]

[mocking Snoopy's singing]

[laughing]

-It's time to dive into your next mission. -[both squeal]

One of the International Space Station's current experiments is to study the best way to grow food in space.

[stomach rumbles]

What was that?

Houston to space station. That's Snoopy's stomach alarm going off.

Ohh.

[clears throat] Copy that.

All right, Astronaut Snoopy, before we start your mission, we'll take a meal break.

-Yahoo! -[laughs]

You know, there was a time when astronauts had to squeeze all their food from tubes and pouches.

[slurping]

Snoopy, wait! That's toothpaste!

Ack!

As I was trying to explain, present-day space travelers can enjoy many of the same things they eat on Earth.

Ooh!

As long as it doesn't make crumbs that could jam up the equipment.

So that means no toast, no potato chips, and definitely no cookies.

[munching]

[both] Huh?

Uh-huh.

Don't worry. I think you'll find something suitable to eat over here.

[both gasp]

-[chuckling] -Ooh!

[Woodstock] Whoo-hoo!

Whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo!

[slurping]

[crunching echoes]

[clears throat, chirps angrily, growls]

[all chirping angrily]

[screams]

[chirping]

Mmm, mmm!

[all growl]

I hate to interrupt lunch, but we've got work to do.

[slurping]

[retches, spits]

[both] Ohh!

In the future, astronauts on longer missions will have to grow their own food because they'll be too far away from Earth to receive shipments of supplies.

The space station's experimental garden allows researchers to study how plants grow in space.

And just like on Earth, the space station's vegetables need to be watered.

Oh! Ah.

[grunting]

[laughs]

[CARA] Bravo, Astronaut Snoopy!

You've discovered the special sponges.

-Much easier, huh? -[grunts in agreement]

Even in space, plants need sunlight and carbon dioxide, so you'll need to position special lights directly over the plants and use fans to circulate the air like it would move on Earth.

[squeals]

[sighs]

Ah-- [screams]

[grumbles]

Ah.

Aw!

[CARA] Excellent work, astronauts.

The rest of your mission is to monitor the crop until it's ready to be shipped back to Earth, where researchers will study the veggies to find ways of improving the growing process.

-[bell chimes] -[CARA gasps]

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm late for my systems upgrade.

[beeping]

[both grunt]

[Woodstock sighs]

[all gasp, chirp]

-[thud] -[munching]

-Huh? -[both gasp]

[squeaks, laughs]

[Snoopy grunts]

[grumbles angrily]

There doesn't appear to be any protocol for outer space food heists.

[all munching]

[grunts]

[CARA sighs, gasps]

Astronauts!

The parameters of this assignment were made very clear!

[both whimpering]

-And you have exceeded them wonderfully. -Huh?

Not only did you take the initiative to harvest the crop, but you even packed the samples in the freezer to be returned to Earth.

Oh, marvelous!

-[Woodstock squeals] -[Snoopy chuckles]

And now your colleagues are scheduled to return home with the samples.

[both yelp]

[all cheering, laughing]

-[Snoopy sighs] -Oh?

-[chirps] -Huh?

[CARA] I said, no crumbs!
