[radio chatter]

[man shouting]

Feel better?

Yeah, I do.

[man shouting]

Hey, you ready to go?

The fire chief said
there's nothing more we can do.

Okay.

Brie will stay at the Fitches'
if you want your room at the bar,

but you can stay with me if you want.

I don't feel so good.

[Jack retches]

-Hey.
-The adrenaline's making him nauseous.

Yeah. I need to get him out of here.

He might also be dealing
with triggers from Iraq.

-I know.
-[Doc sighs] I'm so sorry.

-I know this is rough on both of you.
-Thanks.

Let's go.

Okay.

Thanks.

How's he holding up?

Honestly, I don't know.

A man can only take so much

before he breaks.

Can I get you something to eat?

No, thanks.

-Are you sure?
-No, I'm good. Thank you.

[grunts]

Hey, you don't have
to put on a brave face,

you know, especially with me.

You just lost your house. It's a big deal.

There's no point
getting worked up about it, is there?

Not gonna change anything.

Still, it's okay
to feel what you're feeling.

I feel like it's been
one thing after another.

I know. You've been through a lot.

So have you.

Yeah, and you let me cry,

and yell… [chuckles softly]

…and then cry some more.

Getting emotional
doesn't really work for me.

I just end up breaking things.

Well, you can break whatever you want,

but I'd prefer you do it at the bar
because I don't have renters' insurance.

I'll remember that
next time I feel like smashing stuff.

Hey, hey.

I'm here for you. Whatever you need.

Yeah.

Thanks. I'm gonna grab a shower
and try to get some sleep.

Okay.

[Mel] Hey.

I love you.

Love you too.

[theme music playing]

Yeah, no, that'd be great.

Okay, I'll come by tomorrow.

Thank you.

Bye.

-[Jack inhales]
-[phone beeps]

Hey.

-Hey.
-Was that the fire investigator?

No, it was Jo Ellen.
I called to see if she had any vacancies.

Oh. Okay.

Do you not want to stay here?

[hesitates] It's not that.
It's just there's not a lot of room.

Well, I mean,
I can clear out one of the closets.

Doc will let me store stuff at the clinic.

-I don't want you to have to do that.
-It's really not a problem.

What is it that Hope said
about guests and fish?

I don't wanna overstay my welcome.

That was a completely different situation,
and we're in a relationship.

It doesn't mean we won't get
on each other's nerves.

Oh, I'm sorry.
What do I do that annoys you?

Nothing.
It's more that I would be bothering you.

I just-- I don't want you
to feel obligated to have me here.

-I don't.
-It's been one night.

All right. Well, you think about it.

I gotta go to work. I'll see you later.

Okay.

Bye.

[radio] Hurricane Ida has shifted course.

Residents of Hilton Head,
Port Royal Island,

and Fort Fremont, South Carolina

are bracing for landfall
later this evening.

Upgraded to a Category hurricane,

forecasters are predicting
storm surges nine to feet high

-with winds up to miles per--
-[keypad beeps]

-[radio turns off]
-[phone line ringing]

[operator] Your call has been forwarded
to an automated voice messaging system.

[voice mail beeps]

Hope, hi, it's me.

Listen, if you're still in Port Royal,

you and Nancy
need to evacuate immediately.

This hurricane has gotten too strong
for you to try and ride it out.

Uh, your best bet
is to drive to Allendale.

That is the safest route
that I can figure out.

Uh, you take Highway North
to Highway West.

And call me the minute you get there,
and let me know that you're okay.

[inhales deeply] And just
be careful out there, will ya? Um…

I love you.

[door opens]

-Bye.
-[keypad beeps]

-Good morning.
-Hey.

By chance,
do you have Mrs. Gardner's file?

She's coming for a well-check today,
which should be interesting.

Uh-huh.

The last time I saw her,

she told me to enjoy my figure
while I'm young

because someday my metabolism will stop,

and I won't be able
to wear skinny jeans anymore.

Yeah, her… [sighs]
…her file's in the office.

Okay.

Hey, is everything okay?

Category hurricane
is headed straight for Port Royal Island.

Oh my God! [hesitates]

Were they able to evacuate?

I… I don't know. I haven't been able
to reach Hope or her aunt,

and I think maybe their power is out.

Oh my God. I'm so sorry.

-[sighs] Yeah.
-I can cover if you need to go home.

Nothing I can do at home.
I might as well distract myself with work.

[quietly] Okay.

Well, let me know if you change your mind
or if you need anything.

Very kind of you. I'll be okay.

So, uh, how's Jack doing?

Uh, yeah, he…

he says he's fine.

He wants to stay at the B&B
instead of staying with me.

Well, not surprising.

I mean, Jack is pretty self-reliant.
In fact, that's a point of pride for him.

That's definitely true.

Right, so maybe he just
needs to stand on his own for a while

to feel like he has
some control over his life.

[Mel] Hm.

So you're saying I should be supportive
if he wants to stay at the B&B.

I am not saying anything.
I'm just calling it like I see it.

-Chicken.
-Yeah, a chicken with a lot of experience.

Oh, um, Lilly came by looking for you
last night while I was closing out.

-Oh, is Chloe okay?
-Chloe's fine.

I just sensed it was a lady thing.

-"A lady thing."
-Yeah.

Are you sure you're not a character
from Outlander?

Oh, very funny.

[door closes]

I'm afraid I'm a bit early.

Good morning, Virginia.

That's okay.
You can have a seat. I'll be right there.

Uh, well, I'm gonna go grab her file.

[cell phone ringing]

Hello? Hello?

Vernon, hi. It's Julia from the agency.

[disappointed] Oh.

Hi. Hi, how are you?

I'm good, thank you.

So I have two promising candidates
coming in to meet with you today.

That's very good.

Will there be anyone else
joining the interview?

-Such as?
-Your nurse.

It can be helpful
to have another perspective in the room.

I told you this search
will remain confidential.

Oh, I thought you meant externally.

When it comes to small businesses,
usually new hires are transparent.

I run my clinic on a need-to-know basis.
Right now, nobody else needs to know.

Of course, but you'd wanna know
if there was a personality issue

before bringing someone in.

And in my experience,
when employees are blindsided,

it can cause quite a headache
for management.

Well, this management
is going to stay the course.

-You have a nice day.
-You too.

[keypad beeps]

[sighs]

Oh, don't mind me.

Grandma, you don't need
to cover your eyes.

Oh, I don't wanna inv*de your privacy.

[quietly] What privacy?

Uh, so I made some shortbread for you
this morning.

-Thanks, Grandma.
-There you go, dear.

That was so nice of you.

[Lydie] Okay. Uh, back to my room.
Call me if you need anything.

[door closes]

[Lizzie giggles]

-[door opens]
-[Lydie] Forgot the milk. [laughs]

Can't have cookies without milk.

Isn't she great? [chuckles]

All right.

Here we are, dears.

There's one for you, and one for you.

And now, um,
is there anything else I can get you?

-Can I have a napkin?
-[Lydie] Oh, well, of course, dear.

-[quietly] What?
-A napkin? Really?

There you are.

-Now I'll get out of your hair.
-[chuckles]

-What do you have against napkins?
-Don't you want to be alone with me?

We are alone.

We aren't. Your grandma might as well
be sitting between us.

-Well, this is her house.
-Exactly.

So if you ever wanna have sex again,
you better find somewhere we can be alone.

[door opens]

[door slams shut]

Here we go. [sighs]

Hey!

I tried calling you last night.

[sighs] Yeah, sorry.
I wasn't up for chatting.

Are you okay?

I'm fine. [sighs]

The house is gone,
but that's what insurance is for, right?

-You need to play the lottery.
-Why is that?

Because the universe owes you.

I don't think the universe gives a crap.

Well, are you staying with Mel?

Yeah, for now.

I gotta decide if I wanna move in with her
or stay at the Fitches'.

Why would you wanna stay at the B&B?

I don't want her to feel overwhelmed.
She's got enough on her plate.

What does she want you to do?

She wants me to stay with her.
What else is she gonna say?

I don't know her that well,
but she seems pretty direct.

She is. She's also compassionate.
She could be offering out of sympathy.

[scoffs] I don't think that's the case.

But if you're uncomfortable, move back.
I'll stay at the B&B.

I thought you were heading home soon.

Uh, I actually decided
to take some extra personal time.

And your boss signed off on that?

Hey, don't worry about me.

Just take care of yourself, huh?

-[Brie] Hi.
-[Mel] Hey!

[Jack warily] Hello.

Hi.

-You don't have to check up on me.
-I'm just getting some lunch.

-Oh, really?
-Mm-hmm.

-It's not even noon.
-I know, and I'm already starving.

-[suspiciously] Mm-hmm.
-[Mel] What?

You know that it's a known fact

that stress triggers hormones
related to appetite.

That's why they call it stress eating.

Oh, so this is about your stress
from last night, not mine.

Correct.

If you hadn't been a nurse,
you'd have been a great attorney.

Thank you.

So, any news on the house?

Yeah, they say faulty wiring in the attic
caused the fire.

Oh. Well, that's good news.

Well, that it wasn't set intentionally.

Oh, wow. You're setting the bar
for good news pretty low there.

Yeah, it increases the amount of good news
in the world.

Good point.

[Preacher] Hey, Mel.

Sorry I'm late. Connie came by to help,
and after she cleaned up the kitchen,

it took me half an hour to find my keys.

-Her heart was in the right place.
-Just not your keys.

[Preacher, Jack groan]

-[Preacher] Funny.
-[Mel] Thank you.

Why don't I get a server
to bring your food?

Oh, that would be great. Thank you.

Uh, I'll take the barbecue chicken salad.

-Copy that.
-[Mel] Thanks.

Um, you'll come over tonight, right?

Yeah. I'll bring dinner.

Great. I'll see you then.

Hey! Man, I heard about the fire.
How you doing?

Sick and tired
of people askin' how I'm doing.

Right. You've never been a good patient.
You had a six-inch hole in your back.

Two days later, you're asking
when you could get back to your squad.

-I hate being down and out, you know that.
-I hear ya.

I, uh, did find something
that might cheer you up though.

What's that?

-A lead on Jimmy's location.
-Oh yeah?

I'm on my way over
to speak with Sheriff Duncan.

All right.

-Thanks.
-Yeah.

Man, I feel bad.
You gotta be missing the action back home.

I'm actually digging Virgin River.

-Really?
-Yeah.

I never pictured you as a small-town guy.

I like the vibe. Yeah.

Like today, before work,

instead of being stuck in traffic,
I went fishing.

Right? You catch any?

-That wasn't the point.
-[laughs]

-Fish just gotta get used to me.
-Yeah, keep trying.

-Later, brother.
-Thank you, man.

[shushes] Please don't cry. Here we go.

Thank you. It's okay. See?
We're on the move now, honeybun.

It's okay. It's okay.

[baby crying]

It's okay, sweetie.

[baby crying loudly]

Here you go. That's a good girl.

-[Lilly breathes deeply]
-[crying continues]

No. [shushes] It's okay, buddy.

Mom, what are you doing?
I thought you wanted to shop.

I needed some fresh air. That's all.

-You sure you're okay? You look tired.
-Well, I'm getting old, I guess.

I don't have the energy I had
when you were little.

You're not old.

Oh, sometimes I feel like I'm .

It's because you do too much.
You're taking care of me and Chloe.

I'm a grown-up. I can do my own laundry.

I like doing things for you.
I won't always be around to do them.

What are you talking about?

If you're like Grandma Fran,
you'll be playing with Chloe's grandkids.

Wouldn't that be something.

First in your class,
University of Washington. Terrific school.

You've been practicing family medicine
at San Francisco General.

Correct.

And currently living in Grace Valley.

Yes, my wife grew up there.

So, you'd be willing
to live in Virgin River?

No, I'd… I'd commute.

Aside from your nurse practitioner,
how many medical assistants do you have?

None.

If you live two hours away,
how would you handle after-hours calls?

I guess they'd drive
to the Urgent Care in Clear River.

Oh, you guess.

You guessed wrong.

-Hey, boss, we got a problem.
-What is it?

The hydraulic hose
on a feller buncher ruptured.

Damn it.

-[sighs] Is everyone all right?
-Bud nearly lost his hand.

Christ. [exhales]

So? What's the damage?

New feller buncher costs around k.

We don't have that.
How much to repair the one we've got?

We'd need a heavy vehicle mechanic.
A good one will run you bucks an hour.

Find someone
willing to charge a flat rate.

Uh, those guys don't grow on trees.

[sighs]

But I'll figure it out.

[Brady] And let's…

let's keep this to ourselves, all right?

Guys start thinking
the company's in trouble, they'll bolt,

then I'm screwed.

All right.

[exhales quietly]

Oh, follow that road, and it'll take you
right back to the main highway.

[man] Okay. Thanks. Let me know if you
change your mind about the references.

-Hey.
-Hey! Who was that?

Oh, just some tourist.

Asking about references?

-I thought he said preferences.
-[laughs] Preferences for what?

Well, your guess is as good as mine.
Would you like some coffee?

Yes, please. I would love it.

Oh, and I brought you this.

Oh, that jam.

Strawberry.

Thank you. I hope you didn't go
to too much trouble on my account.

No. Not at all.

Thanks.

-So…
-[Doc sighs]

…have you heard from Hope?

No. [sighs deeply]

-No.
-Anything on the news?

The weather may have made it impossible
for them to evacuate.

Her aunt, Nancy,
she's almost , in a wheelchair,

and Hope would never leave her behind.

The island is very exposed.

Any substantial storm surge
and then the flooding--

Okay, listen.

If I had to bet money on someone
to survive a natural disaster,

it'd be Hope.

Ida has no idea what she is up against.

Why don't we have a game of backgammon
to distract you?

Well, I suppose I do have some time
before my next appointment.

Mm, excellent.

-Set's in the office. I'll be right back.
-And I will clear the table.

I am not so sure I can focus.

-That's all right. No pressure from me.
-[sarcastically] Oh, yeah.

-You'll just double the bet.
-[laughs]

Oh, Mel.

Oh, Brie! Hey!

-What are you doing here in Clear River?
-Picking up clothes for Jack.

-Oh, so am I.
-[Brie chuckles]

I felt like I was drowning
in a sea of plaid.

Well, you obviously know my brother.

I think he came out of the womb
wearing a button-down flannel.

-I can picture that.
-[Brie chuckles]

There's a nail salon just down the street.
I was gonna try it out. Wanna come?

Um, yeah. Doc said I had some time.

-So there's no reason not to go.
-That's right. Okay.

So, how often do you visit Jack?

I actually haven't seen him
for about a year and a half.

Last time was when I came
to see a friend from college

who'd moved to Garberville.

Oh. Where'd you go to college?

-I went to Chapman for undergrad.
-Stop.

-Are you serious?
-Yeah.

-I went to Chapman.
-No way!

-Yes!
-I've never met anyone who went there.

-Most people haven't heard of it.
-I know!

I can't believe this.
When did you graduate?

- .
-We were there at the same time. [laughs]

-What was your major?
-Political science.

-Health sciences.
-Opposite sides of the campus.

-Still, I'm sure we crossed paths.
-I'm sure we did.

What a small world.

May I help you?

I have a surprise for you.

-If you brought me lunch, I already ate.
-It's not lunch.

Then what is it?

If I tell you,
then it won't be a surprise anymore.

Okay. Then why are you telling me now?

You need to tell Connie
you're spending the night at a friend's.

Why would I do that?

Because I'm taking you somewhere.

Somewhere not in Virgin River?

-Correct.
-Okay.

-What should I wear?
-Just normal clothes.

-Will I need a jacket?
-Don't think so.

-A sleeping bag?
-No.

-Will there be candy?
-There can be if you want.

Do I need pajamas?

No.

Okay.

Now I'm intrigued.

Good. That's what I was going for.

[giggles]

-Can't believe how ragged my nails were.
-Oh, I know. Me too.

I love that color. What's it called?

Isn't it cute? Put It In Neutral.

-Red Hot Rio.
-Bold!

-You know what else we should try?
-Hm?

Temper. It's a pastry shop.

They have this milk chocolate
salted caramel cake.

Oh, stop.

Ooh.

-What do you think?
-Cute. It goes with your nails.

You think?

-Oh God!
-Whoa!

-Sorry.
-Are you okay?

Yeah, I'm fine.

-Here, let me help.
-All good. I got it.

[Ricky] Surprise!

Oh my God! It's so romantic!

-You like it?
-Uh, yeah! [laughs]

-[bell dings]
-[giggling]

Can I help you?

Oh, uh, yeah. We'd like a cabin, please.

Mm-hm.
And are you accompanied by an adult?

Oh, well, we're both, uh, .

Well, actually, she's, uh, , so…
[laughs nervously]

I'm gonna need to see both your IDs.

Uh…

Uh… [laughs nervously]

-When will you be checking out?
-Tomorrow.

[quietly] Mm-hmm.

Luggage?

No. Uh…

I'll be right back.

-I think he thinks we're gonna have sex.
-We are gonna have sex.

Okay, two double beds…

We'd like a king, please.

Okay, fine.

I'm gonna need a credit card
for incidentals.

-I only have cash.
-[scoffs] I'm sorry, sir.

We require a credit card
to secure the cabin.

-Here.
-Thank you.

[chuckling quietly]

Hey, I know you. We met at Jack's.

Oh, you're, um--

Brie.

Brie. Right.

What can I get you?

Uh, I'll have a whiskey sour.
Do you want a drink?

No, thanks. I, uh, should get going.

I was just being polite.

Well, if you're gonna twist my arm,
uh, I'll have another one.

I'll get the next round.

-How do you know there'll be a next round?
-From experience.

Well, that's a bold statement.

-Does Jack know you're here?
-No. Why?

He wouldn't want me
having drinks with his sister.

How do you know I'm his sister?

Small town.
I might've asked around a little.

Oh, you did, did you?

[scoffs] Any other dirt
I should be aware of?

I heard you're an attorney,
and you're single.

Wow, you've got quite the grapevine.

Well, did I hear wrong?

Well, one is true,
and the other one is complicated.

-You gonna tell me which is which?
-Doubt it.

Why?

Because I don't know you.

Well, we should fix that.

[Preacher] You okay if I go?
I wanna have dinner with Christopher.

Yeah, you get out of here. It's slow.
I was thinking about closing soon.

Decide what you're gonna do about Mel?

-I thought about staying with her, but--
-Yeah, but?

-I think I'm gonna check into the B&B.
-Yeah? How come?

It's easier. I won't have to worry
about imposing on her, you know?

Or you could view it as an opportunity
to find out if you two really connect.

And if we don't? That's not something
I wanna find out right now.

Well, I gotta say I have never known you
to shy away from anything.

-[Charmaine] Hey!
-Hey.

-I could really use a and right now.
-Settle for a Up?

That seems to be
my drink of choice these days.

-No, Preach, you go. I got it.
-Thanks. Bye, Charmaine.

Bye.

[Charmaine] Wow!

You know, I still remember
the first time I came into this place.

You spent minutes

trying to talk me out
of ordering a white zinfandel.

Unsuccessfully, I might add.

Yeah, well, I appreciated the effort.

And doesn't that feel like
a million years ago?

Well, we've had a lot happen since then.

Yeah, we have.

Um, listen,

I came here to apologize.

For what?

I was really hard on you
throughout our breakup,

and I shouldn't have pushed you
the way that I did.

It's okay.

No, it's not. I get it now.

The minute I met Todd, it was just like…

[imitates expl*si*n, giggles]
"Wow," you know?

-And you and I were never like that.
-I wasn't looking for anything permanent.

I know. And I was,
and I should've listened to you.

-Thank you.
-Anytime.

And I am so happy that you found Mel

because if you didn't,
I never would've met Todd. [laughs]

Well, I'm happy that you're happy.

But I gotta ask.

I mean, I never would've pictured you
with a guy like Todd.

Why not?

Well, you know, the personal barber.

The income property.
You gotta admit, he's a little much.

No, no, no. That's what I love about him.
I mean, he's confident,

and he wants to get married
and have a big family.

And thanks to his income property,

you don't need to worry
about finding another place for the twins.

What does that mean?

I… I heard about the fire,
and I'm so sorry, by the way.

Uh, but at least you don't have to stress
about finding another house.

I'm not stressed out.

I spoke to the contractor
about rebuilding.

Oh, construction always takes longer
than you think.

So instead of renting the house out,

Todd and I will live together
in Clear River.

It's got a huge yard and a big pool.

My house will be ready within six months.
The kids won't even be walking by then.

I'm just saying that
if you decide not to rebuild or whatever,

you can visit the twins whenever you want.

Visit?

Yeah, and Todd says we don't even need
a formal custody agreement.

We can have an open-door policy,
and you can come and go as you please.

Within reason, of course.

[cell phone vibrates]

Oh.

Oh, that's… that's Todd, um…

I should go.

Thank you so much for the Up.

[Charmaine] Hey! Yeah! [laughs]

[door opens]

You're all heart, Wilbur.

-And I want you to know something.
-[Wilbur] What is it, Ed?

[Ed] If I should go first,
everything I own goes to you.

[Wilbur] That's kind of you,

but I'll look silly
with horseshoes and a saddle.

-[laughter on TV]
-[Ed] I wish I could…

Jeez, did you go all the way back
to Virgin River for ice?

-We need to leave.
-We just got here.

-I saw Charlie in the parking lot.
-Who's Charlie?

You know, Charlie, gray hair,
hangs out at Jack's?

-That really old guy?
-Yeah.

You know the desk clerk?
That's his nephew.

[scoffs] I mean, what are the chances?

In a place like this? Pretty high.

-Charlie knows everyone.
-So?

So he could tell Connie we're here.
Paul could tell someone who knows Connie.

-Who's Paul?
-The guy who checked us in.

That guy doesn't care what we're doing,
and Charlie is, like, .

I'll bet he's already forgotten
he even saw you.

Hey.

We are in this amazing cabin all alone.

I know.

So we shouldn't
waste any time talking, okay?

I'm sorry.
I can't stop thinking about Connie.

Would you rather
think about Connie than me?

Of course not.

Okay, then.

Does this help?

Uh, yeah.

How about another one?

-Yeah, that's much better.
-Okay, then. [giggles]

[drink pouring]

[keypad beeps]

[phone line ringing]

-[operator] Your call has been forwarded…
-[sighs heavily]

-[phone beeps]
-[tapping]

[exhales deeply]

-[Mel] Hey there.
-[Doc] Hey.

What?
Did I forget something at the office?

No. I was in the mood to play cards,
and Jack's busy. So…

You know, I'm just really not up for--

Just one game. Just one.

[chuckles]

-Okay.
-Okay. Great.

[Doc sighs]

What are we playin'?

Go Fish.

-Really?
-Mm-hmm.

It's the only game I know how to play.

This is obviously about Hope.

No, I just felt like playing cards.

Well, I still haven't heard from her
if that's… what you want to know.

Have you seen the news?
