01x09 - Rescue

Post by bunniefuu »

Faster than a speeding b*llet.

More powerful than a locomotive.

Able to leap tall buildings
in a single bound.

- Look. Up in the sky.
-lt's a bird.

- It's a plane.
-lt's Superman.

Yes, it's Superman,
strange visitor from another planet...

...who came to Earth with powers
and abilities...

...far beyond those of mortal men.

Superman, who can change
the course of mighty rivers...

...bend steel in his bare hands...

...and who. disguised as Clark Kent...

---mild-mannered reporter
for a great metropolitan newspaper.

...fights a never-ending battle for truth,
justice and the American way.

And now, another exciting episode
in the Adventures oi Superman.

-I've warned you about this hole. Pop.
-lt's all right. It ain't fell in yet.

Look at that. Let's get out of here.

That's a deathtrap in there.
I’m condemning it.

- Now. wait a minute. You can't do that.
- Oh. I can't. eh?

It’ll show you whether I can or not.

What about my new tunnel?
I’m drifting right off the main lead.

Then you'd better forget it.

Because if I catch you using that hole.
I'll have you locked up.

That's confiscation of property.
I won't stand for it!

- That's it, Carbide. Three miles.
- Let's go.

Well. there's the office.

Mighty nice of the chief to give us
such nice. soft assignments.

What's soft about tramping around
in dirty old coalmines?

Lois. maybe you'll find a diamond.

- Mr. Sims?
- Yes?

I'm Clark Kent. this is Miss Lane.
We're from the Daily Planet.

Oh. yes. yes. I’m glad to see you.

I got your letter day before yesterday.
Oh. here. won't you sit down. Miss Lane.

So you're after a story. eh?

I hope it won't inconvenience you
too much. showing me about.

No trouble. But I warn you.
there isn't much to see.

It looks like you're in safe hands.
I guess I'd better go.

- Aren't you staying?
- No. I’m on my way to Washington.

This is Lois' story.
I just dropped her on the way.

Will you pick me up
on your way back to Metropolis?

I don't know when I'll get through.
If you finish first. take the train.

Just the same. stop by on your way back.
I might still be here.

- Okay. Goodbye. Mr. Sims.
- Bye.

So long. Lois. Have a good time.

Well. Miss Lane. just what type
of story are you looking for?

Now. wait a minute, Pop.

But I tell you it ain't dangerous. Stan.
I been working it for over years.

- Ten years ago it might have been safe.
- And it's safe now.

And anyway.
that new tunnel is off to one side.

I seen the mine inspector up here today.
What did he say?

Who gives a durn what he said. Come on.

Hey. POP-

- Now what?
- I ain't gonna do it.

Them timbers are rotten to the core.

Listen. Stan. if we find the coal vein.
I'll make you a partner.

I got a family. A partnership
won't do them no good if I’m dead.

You're a fool. Stan.

All right. go on home. I'll do it myself.

This map will give you an idea of the
hundreds of miles of tunnel under this area.

But what my paper
is interested in. Mr. Sims...

...is whether all this tunneling doesn't
constitute a danger to the town of Carbide.

- That's hard to say.
- But suppose these mines should collapse...

-...wouldn't that cause a major cave-in?
- Not necessarily.

Here. I'll show you why.

Pop's in there! I seen him go in.

- Good heavens. what's that?
- The disaster signal.

Get the rescue squad. Hurry.

Don't go in there!
Wait for the rescue squad.

Pete. take a couple of the boys and get
some of those heavy timbers down there.

Al. get the truck and bring
two or three drills from Consolidated.

The rest of you boys get tools
and stand by to dig.

And move!

- Who's in there?
- Pop Polgase. Working his tunnel.

I told him to stay out of there.

- Is he alone?
- Yeah.

- Why don't you go in after him?
- Gotta wait for the rescue squad.

There's a man trapped in there
and you're going to wait?

Take it easy. Miss Lane.

The rescue squad has special equipment
for this sort of operation.

- He may die in the meantime.
- He might.

You don't walk into a hole like that
without taking precautions.

- Is there a telephone near?
- Yes. you'll find one in the shack over there.

Operator. get me Metropolis - .
And hurry.

Hello. Planet? Give me the desk.

Hello. Walt? This is Lois Lane.
Now. listen. I’m in Carbide, Pennsylvania.

A one-man mine has just collapsed.
trapping the owner. known as Pop Polgase.

You don't think
we can reach him from here?

- Not a chance. We gotta start a new hole.
- Where?

From up there. We'll go straight down
to this level, then drift.

- How long till you get him out?
- That's hard to say. miss.

- We've got to sink a new shaft.
- Why?

That tunnel is liable to collapse
any minute.

Help! Help!

- Where are you?
- In the new drift!

Are you all right?

I'm trapped. Come and get me.

Hold on. Pop. We'll get you.

Lafe! Sims! They heard him.

- He's alive. The boys heard him.
- Let's get him.

You can't do that.
The tunnel is shaky as jelly.

- Can't we shore it?
- Not a chance.

If you set up a timber.
the roof would cave in.

Come on. I'll have a look.

- Couldn't someone go in after him?
- Too dangerous.

- We'd have two men to dig out.
- I’m going in there.

You stay here. That's a deathtrap.

- But that man--
- We're doing all we can.

If everything goes all right.
we'll have him out in hours.

Twenty-four hours?

Now. you stick to your reporting. Miss Lane.
and leave mine-rescue work to us.

- Hi. Clark.
- Hi.

- How did you make out?
- Can't say as I got much.

I told White you can't get
anything out of him.

- If he wouldn't talk to me. why you?
- I did my best. It just wasn't good enough.

- When are you going back to Metropolis?
- No rush.

I promised Lois I'd pick her up at Carbide
on my way. She probably isn't through yet.

How about dropping by the press club?

Well. thanks.
but I have an errand to attend to.

-It’ll see you back here later.
- Yeah.

Start right here.
You'll have to go down about feet.

-It’ll get the relief crews organized.
- Put your backs to it. boys. Dig.

We're starting to sink that new shaft.
We'll have to go down about feet.

That means we need relief for the men
who are working there now.

It’ll take Pete and Al.

Hey. where you going?

Come out of there!

Stop!

- Who was it?
- That Lane girl. I couldn't stop her.

I gotta tell Sims.

Pop! Pop. where are you?

In here. I’m in the side tunnel.

- Pop. where are you?
- You're getting closer.

Keep coming.

- Pop.
- In here.

Thank God you got here.

You can say that again.
For a while I didn't think I'd make it.

You're a girl. Who are you?

My name is Lois.
I’m gonna try and get you out of here.

Now. here. Here. drink this.

Thanks. That's mighty fine.

- Are your legs hurt?
- I don't know.

They've been numb for the past hour.

There's a timber here.
What will I use to move it?

- Use something for a lever.
- But what?

Try one of them -by- s back there.

Here. I'll use this.

We're trapped.

- Don't worry. Pop. they'll dig us out.
- Sure they will.

If the air holds out
and we don't smother to death.

Smother?

When that entrance filled up.
It cut off the air.

Well. what will we do now?

Just sit and wait.

Maybe do a little praying.

- Anything?
- Same old stuff.

Taxes are going up and Congress
is viewing the situation with alarm.

-It’ll shove off.
-lt's still early.

If I start now. I'll make Carbide
about the time Lois is finished.

Be sure and tell White what
a magnificent job I’m doing here.

You know I will.

Make it plenty strong.
maybe he'll give me a raise.

Four hours off. boys. Get some rest.

How's it look. Stan?

That cave-in.
If it didn't k*ll them. it cut off their air.

- We'll never get them in time. Not this way.
- I was thinking.

Now. there are tunnels
from old workings under this hill.

If we break into one.
It might lead to Polgase's main lead.

- I got the maps in my office.
- What about that. Stan?

It won't hurt to look.

There's only a slim chance
we may find something.

We're wasting time.
Pop's workings aren't near anything.

It's the only way we can reach them
in time. if they're still alive.

- What's this?
-lt's the old Joiner workings.

Hey. that tunnel
hasn't been used for years.

Get your old map. Sims.
see where it goes.

It's right here.

Looks pretty close
to the shaft we're sinking now.

Let me put a pair of dividers on it.

- Well. what do you think?
- I think we'll hit it.

- How much further will we have to dig?
- Only a few more yards.

That drift can't be
more than feet down.

If we hit that old tunnel.
we can go in from there.

Let's go.

You're wasting your time. child.

- It ain't budged.
- If only I could get under it.

You'd do better to dig for my tools.
I left them back there.

It's all caved in. I wouldn't even know
where to begin looking.

Then we just got to wait.

And do nothing? Not me.

I think it's giving a little.

Go down there
and tell them to keep digging.

A few more yards to go.
We're right over the Joiner tunnel.

If we hit it. we're in.

One thing worries me
about that Joiner working.

- What's that?
- Gas.

- That old tunnel might be full of it.
- If it is. that's all. brother.

Here is the latest bulletin from the scene of
the mine cave»in at Carbide, Pennsylvania.

The rescue shaft is now down
feet and Lafe Raiser.

---captain of the mine-rescue squad..

---states he expects to break into
the old workings later on this afternoon.

It is still not known whether
Lois Lane and Pop Polgase are still alive.

Keep tuned to this station
for further bulletins.

Pop.

Pop.

- Pop. wake up.
- I hear you.

- Pop. I smell something.
- What?

I don't know.

Pop. that won't do any good.
You might as well lie still.

- And die like a rat in a trap?
- Don't talk that way. they'll dig us out.

- You might as well know.
- Know what?

- That's gas you were smelling.
- Gas?

- Well. what will we do now?
- Nothing.

There ain't nothing we can do...

...but die.

They hit it. We're through.

They hit the tunnel?

- Just broke through the roof.
- Check it before you let the men go through.

- Gas!
- Clear the area.

Everybody. out. Fast!

- Everybody back! Gas. Get out.
- Clear the area!

Hello. Mr. Sims.

- What's all the excitement about?
- Gas.

We broke through the Joiner drift.
found it full of gas.

- That's too bad.
- You seem mighty unconcerned, Mr. Kent.

- Should I be concerned?
-l'd be if it was a friend of mine in there.

In where? What are you talking about?

- You mean you don't know?
- Know what?

Miss Lane and Pop Polgase
are trapped in a mine cave-in.

- Where? Tell me where.
- Someplace under that hill.

- Exactly where?
- We don't know. exactly.

Soon as the gas clears out of the tunnel.
we'll go in and try to find them.

Look. Superman.

- Where did he come from?
- What will he do?

- You all right. Miss Lane?
- Yes. but help him.

He's pinned to the ground.

Help him. Miss Lane.
I'll hold up the tunnel until you're out.

Now. hurry.

- Will they be all right?
- They sure will.

I never saw anything like that before
in my whole life.

- Are you feeling better?
- A little.

Where's Superman?

He's gone.

I expected it.

- Lois. that was a close one. You all right?
- I guess so. A little shaky. that's all.

Get into your own clothes.
I'll take you back to Metropolis.

That sounds grand.

- And. Clark?
- Yes?

Superman finally took me out.
