01x15 - Treasure of the Incas

Post by bunniefuu »

Faster than a speeding b*llet.

More powerful than a locomotive.

Able to leap tall buildings
at a single bound.

- Look. Up in the sky.
-lt's a bird.

- It's a plane.
-lt's Superman.

Yes, it's Superman,
strange visitor from another planet...

...who came to Earth with powers
and abilities...

...far beyond those of mortal men.

Superman, who can change
the course of mighty rivers...

...bend steel in his bare hands...

...and who. disguised as Clark Kent...

---mild-mannered reporter
for a great metropolitan newspaper.

...fights a never-ending battle for truth,
justice and the American way.

And now, another exciting episode
in the Adventures oi Superman.

- Looking for someone?
-l've been looking all over the boat for you.

- Why didn't you knock?
- So I didn't knock. So sue me.

- What do you want?
- Doc sent me to meet you.

- Just what I thought.
- I got on at quarantine.

- Is Doc meeting the boat too?
- You know he never goes out.

He sent the bus and a couple of the boys.
They're waiting for us at customs.

Never misses a bet, does he?

You're not so slow yourself.
registering as “Madame Charpentier.“

You should have let us know.
I could have missed you.

How did you get away with it. madame?

Is that the bus down there?

That's it. How are you taking
your stuff through customs?

You were right.
The gangplank is going down.

Wait right here while
I line up the interview.

- Do you see any sign of them?
- Nope.

You think something went wrong?

We'll have to wait and see.

Don't wanna wait too long.

- Hey.
- See something?

Right by the entrance of the pier.

That guy's got fed written all over him.

Take a look over there.

This place is crawling.
Must be some VIP aboard.

Hey. we better get out of here.

Wait. Give him a couple more minutes.
They're starting to come out of customs.

Young man.

- Who. me?
- Please.

You are so kind.
And I do not know this country.

And I must catch a train quick.

And I have twisted my ankle.

- You see that ambulance over there?
- Sure.

You will give this box to them. no?

It is serum for the doctor.

They are most anxious to get it.

- Sure.
-It is a matter of life and death.

-It’ll hurry it right over.
- Be sure to give it to the doctor personally.

Sure thing.

lam greatly in your debt.

- My ankle.
- Let me give you a hand.

You are so sweet.

- You the doc?
- Why?

I got some serum. a lady said
to give it to the doctor.

That's what we've been waiting for.
The doc's inside.

- I don't see any doctor in there.
-lnside.

Jimmy!

What's the big idea?
Where are you taking me?

Just a little ride. sonny boy.

- Where's Fisher and the count?
- They never showed up.

- Who's this boy?
- He's got what we were sent for.

- Listen. doctor--
- Where is the box?

I guess that's what you want. though
I still don't know what it's all about.

Where did you get it?

A French lady came out of customs
and gave it to me.

She said she hurt her ankle or something
and had to make a train.

I took it over to the ambulance for her.
That's all I know.

- That's his story.
- Quiet.

Did this French lady you mention give you
any inkling as to what was in the box?

She said it was serum. and I was
to give it only to the doctor.

That's why we brought him here.
It sounded fishy.

Look. my name's Olsen. Jim Olsen.
I’m a reporter for the Planet.

There's my identification.

What were you doing on the pier?

Waiting for a friend of mine to get me
an interview with a movie star.

Sounds perfectly reasonable.

Fisher and the count found
themselves in difficulty...

...so they passed the box to
the French lady he speaks of. and here it is.

- Is something wrong?
- Nothing.

Except that the box is empty.

Hello. Yes, put him on.

Yes. What is it?

Dead?

This is fantastic.

Yes.

Yes. of course. that's correct.
That's quite obvious.

Well. thanks for calling.

Give me a moment to think
of our next step. Franz.

It’ll call you back.

- Fisher is dead.
- What happened?

They just found his body on the boat...

...in a stateroom which had been occupied
by a Madame Charpentier.

Madame Charpentier? Who's she?

I leave it to you.

Fisher was dead.
He couldn't leave the boat.

You say the count never appeared.
but out of nowhere...

...a French lady sends over a box.
an empty box.

Nobody told us to be on the lookout
for
a female impersonator.

I have only myself to blame for this.
I have not yet learned my lesson.

In this world. trust no one.
Absolutely no one.

I wish I knew what this was all about.

- You know too much already. young man.
- Maybe he hasn't told us all he knows.

- That's right. Maybe you better find out.
- What are you gonna do to me?

I can assure you
that is my least concern at the moment.

Give me the overseas operator, please.

- Take him inside.
- I’m not going in there.

Get going-

I want to put through a call
to Dr. Hans Schuman.

Frankfurt. Germany.
United States Base Hospital .

What's that? A delay of three hours
on all calls to Germany?

Well. we'll have to wait.

Should I turn on the current now. doctor?

No. not yet.
We may have to use him later.

- May I come in. inspector?
- Come in. Kent.

- Any news of Jim?
- No. and I’m really worried.

From what Lois and that pier guard
saw from the gangplank...

...l'd say Jim's just up to a little
fancy ambulance chasing.

- He'll turn up with a whale of a story.
- Wish I felt as easy about it.

Any word on that ambulance yet?

I guess I'd better let you in on the
whole story. It doesn't look so good.

- What did the boys find out?
- Well. it was a rented ambulance.

A phony name.
They put on their own driver...

...so we don't know where it went
or who or what it carried.

Frankly. they didn't leave us
a clue to follow.

I had a feeling from the first
there was a connection...

...between Jim's disappearance in that
ambulance and the m*rder in the stateroom.

Did you identify the victim yet?

He's the only one we know anything about.
Small-time confidence man named Fisher.

Here's his picture.

He used the health-officer gag
to get on at quarantine.

What about Madame Charpentier?

She boarded the boat
at Bremerhaven. Germany.

Spoke to no one on the trip.
never left her stateroom...

...and completely disappeared
after clearing customs.

Excuse me.

Yes. Henderson speaking.

I see.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Thanks. Bob.

Checkup on her passport just came through.
Forgery. as expected.

We've got to find that woman. I’m sure
she's the only one who'll lead us to Jim.

America's a mighty large haystack
to find one small needle in.

Clearly. Fisher and the ambulance were
at the dock to meet Madame Charpentier.

Probably escort her to
a prearranged rendezvous.

- And she decided to double-cross them.
-It makes sense.

There's one point to be explained.

Why did the boys in the ambulance
let her get away?

That's pretty easy.
They weren't expecting a woman.

That's it. And the woman was no lady.

The fingerprints in the stateroom
and on the g*n were male prints.

You didn't tell me about that.
Inspector.

- Could I have a set of those prints?
- Pick them up at the lab on your way out.

If you're thinking of checking with the
police in Germany. we've already tried.

- They identify them?
- Unfavorable atmospheric conditions...

...reduced the telephotos to distortion.
We'll try in the morning.

Tomorrow morning may be too late.
There must be another way.

Well. if you happen to bump into Superman.
he might give you a hand.

You never can tell. Col. Redding
in charge of Army Intelligence...

...is one of my best friends.
I'll see you. inspector.

If you come up with anything.
let us know.

Those are the prints we found
in the stateroom.

Those are the ones we took off the g*n.

Those are clear as a bell. Do you have any
identification on them in your files?

Nothing remotely resembling them.

We got a print of a full hand
from the top of the bureau.

Leaned on it, fixing his hair
or making up in the mirror.

- I'm getting a copy for you.
- These are all I need. Jake.

Might as well take it along. Give me two
seconds in the darkroom. and I'll have it.

This fixative dries in--

Mr. Kent?

Where the dickens...?

- Hi. colonel.
- Clark. what are you doing here?

- Just flew in on a little mission.
- Sure good to see you. Pull up a chair.

- Good to see you. Mind if I sit here?
- Not at all.

- Working kind of late. aren't you?
- Plenty to do over here.

Dr. Schuman to see you, sir.

Have Dr. Schuman wait, corporal.

- Jack. I need your help.
- Name it.

These belong to a fellow who sailed
from Bremerhaven on the th...

...masqueraded as a Madame Charpentier.
Can you identify him for me?

Let's take a look at our files.
see what we've got.

Let's do it.

- Looks like we're in luck.
- Let's see.

That's our man. without a question.

“Otto von Kleben. .
formerly Count von Kleben.

Lieutenant. Wehrmacht. captured by
Russians. . Repatriated in .“

Here it is. “At present. employed as
orderly in U.S. Base Hospital .“

Dr. Schuman might be able to help us.
Okay to check with him?

Of course.

Send Dr. Schuman in.

Guten Abend. colonel.
I have a kleine favor.

I am sorry. I did not know you were busy.
I will see you in the morning.

Oh. just a minute. doctor.
I want you to meet--

Anything wrong. Clark?
You look as if you'd just seen a ghost.

I'm sorry.

This unhealthy-looking character is an old
newspaper friend of mine from the States.

Clark Kent. Dr. Schuman.

- How do you do. Herr Kent?
- Nice to meet you.

Sit down. doctor.

Clark's interested in talking to an orderly
you've got working here. doctor.

The name is von Kleben.
Otto von Kleben.

Von Kleben. I am sorry.
but that is not possible.

- Is something wrong?
- Von Kleben was discharged...

-...two weeks ago.
- Two weeks ago?

I am afraid I have no information here as
to his present whereabouts. gentlemen.

Perhaps I can help you. He docked
in the United States this morning.

So? Would I be out of turn in inquiring
what your interest in this von Kleben is?

Not at all. doctor. The police found
a man m*rder*d in his stateroom.

We have good reason to believe
the m*rder*d man was sent...

-...to meet him and escort him ashore.
- I see.

You know the identity
of the m*rder*d man?

Yes. He was a n*zi espionage agent...

...and small-time confidence man
named Fisher.

- Fisher?
- Name strike a bell?

There are so many Fishers
in Germany. colonel.

Doctor. you wouldn't. by any chance.
be able to tell us...

...what von Kleben's mission
in America was. would you?

Me? After all. Herr Kent.
he was just an orderly here.

- We have a staff of nearly people.
- You haven't missed anything. have you?

- I mean. anything of substantial value?
- What could he have stolen?

An x-ray machine?

We have no secret formulas that could
have been committed to memory either.

I'm afraid von Kleben's business
had nothing to do with the hospital.

Well. colonel. looks like we've reached
the end of another blind alley.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.
Herr Kent.

My business will wait till tomorrow.
Guten Abend. gentlemen.

- That Schuman's a dead ringer for Fisher.
- Fisher?

The man m*rder*d
in von Kleben's stateroom.

Schuman's been working
for us a long while.

He couldn't be here and dead
in the States at the same time.

- Maybe he has a twin brother.
- We could check on it.

They look so much alike.
There's a connection somewhere.

- Who's head of medical supplies?
- Major Lee.

- Okay if we drop in on him?
- By all means. He's just across the hall.

- How are you. colonel?
- Fine. doc. thanks to your little white pills.

- Major Lee. Clark Kent.
- Hello.

How do you do? Major. have you missed
anything in the past two weeks?

- Anything of great value?
- No. I don't think so.

Do you have anything of value?
Anything transportable?

Well. we've got a million dollars
worth of radium. if that'll help you.

- That's it.
-lt's no bigger than a peanut...

-...but we keep it in a lead-lined safe.
- Have you used it in the last two weeks?

No. I believe Dr. Schuman
was the last one to--

Could we have a look in that safe?

Of course. come along.

- What happened?
- Schuman. He's locked us in.

- Any phone in here?
- No. and don't light any matches.

- Anybody hear us if we shout?
-lt's airtight and soundproof.

We'll have to wait till someone
comes down for supplies.

If neither of you moves or makes a sound.
I'll get us out. Deal?

What you been doing.
reading up on Houdini?

Absolute silence and no motion
for seconds. please.

What's that?

Gentlemen. on the count of three.
we'll all push the door. You ready?

One. two. three.

Well. if it is Schuman.
he won't be able to get very far.

- Evening. inspector.
- Hello. Kent. Where have you been?

Oh. over the water and far away.
Any progress?

Some. We've located the taxi driver who
picked up Madame Charpentier at the pier.

Wonderful.
Where did they take her, or him?

This is the answer to your question.
I hope.

Henderson speaking.

Oh. yes. Tobey. Great.

Yeah. well. let's have them.

Santa Fe Chief.

Miami Red Arrow.

Pennsylvania Limited.

Good work. Tobey.

Fine. Great.

Send Johnson in.

Madame Charpentier left Metropolis
on one of those trains at--

Johnson. find out the present location
of these three trains.

They left Metropolis Central Station
at noon today.

- I have to be going.
- Hey. wait a minute.

You've got some explaining to do.
Listen to this. from Frankfurt. Germany.

“Dr. Albert Schuman. twin brother.
deceased Fisher, confessed that...

...million-dollar radium smuggled through
customs in earrings by Otto von Kleben.

Radium consigned to Dr. Rudolf Albrecht.
Causeway Boulevard.

Arrest at once. Credit Kent. Daily Planet.
with double play.

Signed. J. Redding. colonel. U.S.A.“

- Well. how did you do it. Kent?
- Trade secret.

Here's von Kleben's picture.

So this is Madame Charpentier.

- I know how you did it. Superman.
- You can credit him with an assist.

I gotta run along. I'll see you.

Gonna be in on the k*ll?
We're picking up Albrecht tonight.

It’ll be there.

Great day in the morning!

Who is it?

Pretty smart. Hollow lead.

Your passenger's returning east, by air.

They've got the whole force out there.

They'll never take me alive.

If you don't drop that g*n.
you're going to eat those words.

Now. what have you done
with Jim Olsen?

Perhaps you would like
to see for yourself.

Give him the current.

Not so fast.

Thanks for a very helping hand.

Superman. do you know
how all this started?

- No. Jim. How?
- I was waiting on the pier for Miss Lane...

...to interview Denise Darrieux.
the French movie star.

Sorry you missed her.
They say she's very pretty.

Right now you're prettier to me than
all the movie stars in the world. Golly.
