01x20 - Riddle of the Chinese Jade

Post by bunniefuu »

Faster than a speeding b*llet.

More powerful than a locomotive.

Able to leap tall buildings
in a single bound.

- Look. Up in the sky.
-lt's a bird.

- It's a plane.
-lt's Superman.

Yes, it's Superman,
strange visitor from another planet...

...who came to Earth with powers
and abilities...

...far beyond those of mortal men.

Superman, who can change
the course of mighty rivers...

...bend steel in his bare hands...

...and who. disguised as Clark Kent...

---mild-mannered reporter
for a great metropolitan newspaper.

...fights a never-ending battle for truth,
justice and the American way.

And now, another exciting episode
in the Adventures oi Superman.

- You're late.
- Yeah. I know.

There were a few customers in the shop.
I couldn't get away.

- Have a drink?
- No. thanks.

All right. let's get down to business.
Did you check the tunnel?

All right. don't be frightened.

Not with that jukebox.
nobody will ever hear you.

I went through the tunnel this morning.

Let's make sure of this.

Here's the map I drew
according to what that guy told me.

This is where you live.

According to this guy. there's a stairway
from a room of your place into the tunnel...

...then another stairway up from the tunnel
to the second floor of the old man's house.

There's a ladder leading downward
from the back room...

...and a stairway leading up
to Lu Sung's apartment.

A tunnel runs under the street.
but it's not straight.

There are curves in it.

- Well. it's clear so we can get through it.
- Oh. yes.

There are still some candles in
the stone walls. in case we need light.

All right. Now let's get
this caper straight.

- We pull this job tomorrow at : . Right?
- Yes.

Don't like these daylight jobs.
Too dangerous.

But that's the only time.
Like I told you...

...Lu Sung keeps the Kuan-yin jade
under lock and key.

But tomorrow afternoon. he's invited
some newspaper reporters over.

Undoubtedly. he'll show them the jade.
That will be the time.

All right. I'll bring the pineapple
over to your place about : .

You sure there will be no trouble?

Trouble?

Not a chance. lt's a cinch.

Well. I wouldn't want anybody to get hurt.

Hurt? Who's gonna get hurt?

The shop will be closed up.
All we want is to get him downstairs...

...so we can duck through the tunnel.
get up to the apartment. grab the jade.

Clean and simple. Nobody will get hurt.

Nobody but Lu Sung.

Don't start worrying about him.
You said he was gonna give it away.

I know. but giving it to a museum
is different than having it stolen.

It ain't gonna do nobody any good
sitting in a museum.

This way. you get a chance to lay
your hands on a pot full of dough.

And after you start you and this niece
of his off right...

-...what about that?
- If I didn't feel the jade belonged to Lily...

...l would have no part of this.

Sure. you got a good reason.

As a matter of fact. you're not
even stealing it if it belongs to her.

She's your girl, you're gonna marry her.
Right in the family.

It's not as simple as all that.
lt's still stealing.

But I said I'd do it, and I will.

You got nothing to worry about.

It’ll have a lot to worry about.
But that's my business.

Now. look. kid...

...don't start getting the shakes.
I told you. you got nothing to worry about.

We'll get in there fast and grab it.
They won't know what happened.

- No cops. no g*ns. no nothing.
- Are we finished?

Long as you got it straight.

You come to my place
tomorrow afternoon at : .

- That's all I have to know.
- All right.

Get a good night's sleep. Stop worrying.

- This will be like taking candy from a baby.
- Yeah. Good night.

Kuan-yin.

Goddess of peace.

Nobody around. it's Sunday afternoon.
Go on. set the fuse.

Hold it. Somebody's coming.

- Isn't she lovely. Mr. Kent?
- Beautiful. sir.

- Tea. Miss Lane?
- Please.

And I wish you'd call me Lois.

- Mr. Kent?
- No. thank you. No tea for me.

- Uncle?
- Please.

Must be priceless.

Very nearly.

The jade is of gem quality
and weighs almost carats.

It has been in my family
for more than two centuries.

I value it at half a million dollars.

But then I didn't ask you here
to impress you with my seeming wealth.

I have for you what I believe is called. in
the newspaper profession. a scoop of news.

A news scoop.

Yes. A news scoop.

It is this:

As a small token of my appreciation...

...for everything this great country.
the United States. has done...

...for me and my people...

...tomorrow at noon.
I leave for Washington...

...to present the Kuan-yin
to the National Art Museum.

- How wonderful.
- This is a scoop.

Lu Sung. I am proud and happy
to know you.

Light n.

It’ll have a photographer come down the first
thing in the morning to get some pictures.

Something exploded down in your shop.

- I'm so frightened.
- There's nothing to be frightened about.

Fortunately. none of us were hurt.

Pieces of a homemade b*mb.

- How did it happen?
- A b*mb.

- Clark. shouldn't we notify the police?
- Yes. call Henderson.

The telephone is over here.

Police headquarters. please.

There it is. Grab it.

We've got to take her with us.

- No.
- She saw us.

Hold that thing open.

Now wait a minute.
Let me get that straight.

The name is Lu Sung.

L-U capital S-U-N-G.

Owns an art and curio shop at .
that's Cherry Street.

Someone tossed a b*mb
through the window of the shop.

When did this happen?

Oh. minutes ago. huh?

Well. that's : . Any witnesses?

No. eh? Anyone hurt?

Oh. I see. Hold on a minute, Miss Lane.

- Yes?
- Car .

Reporting expl*si*n in Chinese art shop.
Inspector.

Hold it. Donovan.

Hang on. Miss Lane. We're getting
a patrol car report on it right now.

It’ll be right back with you.

Go ahead. Donovan.

Come on. come on. Get up.

Lily-

She's fainted.
You didn't have to do this.

Don't be a fool. She saw us.

Okay. Send out a emergency...

...and tell Hill to have two men from
the b*mb squad ready to leave with me.

- Yes, sir.
- All right. Miss Lane...

...I’m coming with two men
from the b*mb squad.

Thank you. Inspector Henderson.

He'll be down in a few minutes
with two men from the b*mb squad.

Don't worry.

- Inspector Henderson's on his way down.
- Oh. good.

- How can you find anything in this rubble?
- Found this much.

Couldn't have been a very big b*mb.

Big enough.

Lu Sung. what is this? What happened?

A b*mb was thrown through the window.

That must have been what woke me up.
I was taking a nap. I live across the street.

This is the manager of my shop.
Harry Wong.

Miss Lane. Mr. Kent
of the Metropolis Daily Planet.

- How do you do?
- How do you do?

This is a terrible thing.
Who could have done it?

Whoever did it should be drawn
and quartered.

I think I'll run up and see how Lily is.

I will go with you.

Mr. Wong. I don't suppose you have
any idea who might have done this.

If I searched my mind for a century.
It would do no good.

Lu Sung has no enemies.

He is the most beloved man
in all of Chinatown.

Ask any of them.

So many beautiful things.
broken and shattered.

Can you estimate the loss. Mr. Wong?

That would be difficult.

Fortunately, the one piece of great value.
the Kuan-yin jade...

...Lu Sung has always kept
under lock and key in his apartment.

- However. there is--
- Clark. come up here quickly.

- What happened?
- She isn't anywhere in the apartment.

- Who isn't?
- Lily. Lu Sung's niece.

I left her here on the couch. When Lu Sung
and I got up here. she was gone...

...and so was the Kuan-yin jade.

What happened. Mr. Kent?

The Kuan-yin jade is missing.

And so is Mr. Sung's niece.

Excuse me. I'd better go down.

Now. look. inspector. you've got
to be reasonable about this.

What do you mean. reasonable?

If Wong's a suspect. let's question him.
What are we playing?

You don't understand.
There's more to this than just a robbery.

You're telling me. Look at that mess.

I don't mean the b*mb.
Lu Sung's niece may be involved.

So what? Good grief.

When the department doesn't solve a crime
in minutes. the papers cut me into ribbons.

Wait. wait. wait. Here he comes.

Mr. Wong. I'd like to have
you meet Inspector Henderson.

- How do you do?
- Mr. Wong is the manager of this shop.

Lu Sung obviously is in good hands.

I'm going to get the clerks
to help me clean up.

- Well. can't you use the phone?
- Well. they have no telephones.

- I don't know.
- I think that's all right. inspector.

Mr. Wong will be glad to answer
questions when he returns.

- Most certainly. sir.
- Okay.

Thank you.

You notice the bamboo dust on his shirt?

I wouldn't know bamboo dust
from feathers.

Well. here's some.

There's plenty more in that box upstairs.

Wong had no opportunity
to get any of this stuff on him...

...unless he was carrying that jade figurine.
The problem is, how did he get to it?

It’ll lay you - the girl's involved.

You could be right at that.
Come on. let's go on up.

You don't have to be afraid of me. girlie.

- Lily.
- Don't touch me.

The Kuan-yin belongs to you.
You are Lu Sung's only living relative.

He had no right giving it to a museum.

Thief.

No. Lily.

The Kuan-yin belongs to you by heritage.

I did it only to get money
so we could get married and go away.

Come on. she'll get over it.

You're responsible for this.
You said there would be no trouble.

That you would pay me
before the police arrived.

Did I know she was gonna be
in the room?

What did you wanna do.
leave her to tip the cops?

Then pay me and go.
I've had enough of this.

It’ll pay you when I get this thing
where it's safe.

You promised to pay me on delivery.

That's before she messed up the caper.
I gotta get this thing where I can sell it.

- What good is it to me unless--?
- Then give it back. I'll return it and confess.

Too late for that now. sonny boy.

Give it back!

Let's face it. Your niece must be
mixed up in this. It figures.

I will not believe it.

Then where is she?
People just don't disappear.

- Inspector, I don't see the point in all this.
- Oh. you don't. eh?

Someone tosses a b*mb through a window.
a statue disappears...

-...and you don't see any point.
- Wait--

Suppose you stick to reporting. Kent.
and I'll take care of the police work.

- Or would you like my badge?
- I’m trying to tell you--

I know what you're trying to say.

You've already said too much.

You talked me into letting
that Wong character get out of here.

He's been gone minutes.

- Where does he live?
- Harry Wong?

- Yes.
- Across the street. Number .

Don't anybody leave. I’m not through.

- Mind if I come with you. inspector?
- What good would it do if I did?

The police. Open up.

Let me try. inspector.

No one in there.

I hear something.

What is it?

Be right back.

Lily couldn't have done it, Lois.

- She just couldn't.
- Of course she didn't.

The Kuan-yin!

- Why. you dirty--
- Shut up.

You'll get the same thing. maybe worse.

Now lead the way downstairs.

And remember, I’m right behind you.

Go on. Go on.

Turn left when you get out of the store.

Don't bleat, or I'll k*ll you.

Move. Move!

Stand back. please.

What's going on here?

Good grief.

Inspector. you better have someone get
down there and shut off the water.

- What's the matter?
- Miss Lane!

Don't come in here. or I'll sh**t her.

- Get more men.
- We can handle this.

- Just keep the crowd back.
- Go ahead. Move them back.

All right. come on.

Don't worry. We'll get you out of this.

He's got the Kuan-yin jade.

-It’ll make a deal with you.
- No deals.

- Come out with your hands up.
- Wait a minute.

What's your deal?

Don't make any deals.
He may have k*lled Lu Sung.

Shut up!

It’ll give up the jade and let her walk out
if I go free.

- Is he kidding?
- Hold it.

We'll have to think it over.

You've got five minutes.

Watch him.

Who's the guy in the circus suit?

He's Superman.

This time he's not so super. is he?

Wait and see.

Who told you about
the underground tunnel. Wong?

I knew about the tunnel because I knew
about the trap door in my apartment.

- But I didn't know where it led.
- In the days of the Tong Wars...

...all Chinatown
had underground tunnels. inspector.

But I have been living
in this house for years...

...and did not know of this one.
nor the sliding wall.

- Who told you where the tunnel led. Wong?
- Greer.

He learned it from the man
who built this house.

He also learned that the tunnel
could be flooded with water.

What did Greer plan to do
with the jade statue?

He said he would take it to England
and sell it.

How much were you supposed to get?

I'm too ashamed to even talk about it.

It’ll write everything out. and I'll sign it.

- Now. please take me out of here.
- Sit down. Wong.

- You'll testify against Greer. won't you?
-l'll do anything you wish.

Anything to make amends to Lu Sung.
to Lily and to myself.

Look at me. Wong.

I'm gonna do something I've never done
in years on the police force.

I'm going to act as the judge and jury.

I'm not going to arrest you.

Why. inspector. what are you trying
to do. become a Superman?
