♪ The Cat in the Hat
is about to appear ♪

♪ He's whizzing over
to whisk you away ♪

♪ On a fabulous journey
today ♪

- He's coming!
- ♪ Now he's arrived

♪ In the Thinga-ma-jigger,
the thing that he drives ♪

♪ He's a cat
and he's oodles of fun ♪

♪ With his hairy helpers,
Thing Two and Thing One ♪

- Whoo-hoo!



- Whoa!



[laughter]



- Whoa!
- Wahoo!

- ♪ It's the Cat in the Hat

♪ All of our adventures
start like that ♪

♪ Wherever you're going,
wherever you're at ♪

♪ The Cat in the Hat
knows a lot about... ♪

- ♪ He knows a lot about,
he knows a lot about ♪

all: ♪ He knows a lot
about that ♪

[laughter]

[upbeat music]



[grunting]

- [whimpering]

[both grunting]

[playful music]

- Okay, whose idea was this,
anyway?

- It was my idea

to use the trunk
for our dress-up clothes.

- And it was my idea
to put it up in the tree house!

Then we can play
tree house pirates!

- Or cowboys
and space monsters!

- Well, as long
as you're both sure,

let's go!

- Ready for liftoff.

- Uh-oh.

Ahh!
- Whoa!

Got you, Fish.

- Do you really think

you're gonna get this big thing
all the way up there?

- Well, now that I see it
from here,

the tree house is a lot higher
than I thought.

We might need some help.

- Did someone say help?

- Cat?
- Where is he?

- I'm here to save the day!

- That's not the kind
of help we need, Cat.

There's no fire.

[boing]

- Whaa!
[laughter]

- [sighs]
Really, Cat?

- Sorry, Fish.
Let me get that for you.

- We need help lifting this
trunk up into the tree house.

- It should
be easier to lift

now that you're
not in it anymore.

- [grunting]

Nope, still heavy.
Hmm.

Or maybe we could make
a dress-up trunk out of this.

- It is a good box,
but I like my trunk better.

- Okay.
- All right.

[exciting music]

- Everyone lift together!

[all grunting]

Hey!

Why did it get heavier
all of the sudden?

Oh.

[laughing]

[grunts, groans]

- It's no use!

We can't reach.

- I know for a fact,
and I promise it's true,

there really is nothing
that you two can't do.

- The Cat's right.

There must be a way
we can get this all the way up.



- Hmm.

You might get help
from a simple machine.

- A simple machine?

What's that?

- And where can we get one?

- Actually,
there's more than one,

but you'll find them all
in one place:

Machine-a-ma-zoo!

Wow!

- Machine-a-ma-who?

- Machine-a-ma-zoo!

- Let's go see!



- Dad, can we go
to Machine-a-ma-zoo

to look for a simple machine?

- Machine-a-ma-zoo?

Sounds like a simply
wonderful place!

Have fun!
[chuckles]

- We can go, we can go!
- I know, I know!

To the Thinga-ma-jigger!

- Good luck! Have fun!

See you when you get back.

- How come
you aren't coming, Fish?

- Watching all that lifting
tired me out.

[all laugh]

- Buckle up!

[horn honks]

[playful music]

[whirs, clicks]

Flip the Jigger-ma-whizzer!

[boing]

[exciting music]



Isn't this fun?

both: Whoo-hoo!

- ♪ Here we go, go, go,
go on an adventure ♪

♪ The Thinga-ma-jigger
is up and away ♪

both: ♪ Go, go, go,
go on an adventure ♪

♪ We're flying
with the Cat in the Hat today ♪

- We've arrived at a place
that is useful to you.

Full of simple machines,
it's Machine-a-ma-zoo!



- Wow.

Look at all these things!

[laughs]

- Uh, Cat?

Are you sure we've come
to the right place?

I thought we were looking
for a machine

to help get my dress-up trunk
up the tree.

- That's exactly
why we're here!

- But these aren't machines.

That's a machine.

- A spectacular one, too, that
does many wonderful things.

But simple machines
are simpler

and can help you do jobs
you can't do on your own.

- [laughs]
Yeah!

- Sally, pushing and pulling
can be hard to do.

Even harder when something
is bigger than you.

But a simple machine
can be helpful with that.

You might move a mountain,
or even a cat!

[laughs]

- Okay, but what's
this clothesline doing here?

- It's here because it's a
simple machine called a pulley.

Aha!

I wondered where I left
my washing to dry.

Ooh, my socks!

Oh!
[chuckles]

What are those doing here?
[laughs]

- But we don't need something

that moves
this way and that way.

We need something
that moves this way

to get the trunk up
into the tree house.

- Which one is the best
for that?

There are so many things!

- Maybe two more things
can help you decide.

[whistles]

[both cheer]

both: Yeah!

[laughter]

[exciting music]

[excited chatter]

- Whoo-hoo!

both: Ta-da!

- Hi, Things.

Can you help us find a machine

that will get our trunk up
into the tree house?

[excited chatter]

Great, let's go!

[excited chatter]

[curious chatter]

Hmm.
That thing goes up.

Is that a machine?

- It's a wonderful,
wonderful, wonderful

simple machine
called a ramp.

- Come on, Nick,
let's give it a try!

[laughter]

- Pushing uphill
is a lot easier than lifting.

- Yeah!
This ramp really works.

- But this only reaches
to the top of the Cat's hat.

- We need a ramp
high enough

to reach the top
of the tree house.

- Hmm.[gasps]
That one might work!



- But that's too big
to fit in the backyard!

We'll have to keep looking.

- Uh-huh.
- Uh-huh, uh-huh!

- Uh-oh!
- Bye-bye!

- Follow those Things!

[both cheer]

[exciting music]

[chattering]

[laughing, cheering]

[splash]

- Where'd they go?

- Oh, no!

They must've fallen down
this well.

I hope they're okay!

both: Huh?

both: Hello!

[excited chatter]

- Oh, how those rascally Things
love to play!

But now that they're in there,
we'll have to get them out.

- How?
It's a long way down!

- Maybe we can use
this rope.

- I like it!

- [grunts]

- Jump in the bucket!

both: Yay!

Whoo-hoo!
- Yeah!

- [grunting]

- [laughing]

- [grunts]

These two Things
are heavy!

[dramatic music]

- Need a hand?
- Thanks.

[upbeat music]

Two people pulling together

is much easier than one.



[both grunting]

[both cheer]

- Aww.

- This rope sure helped us
pull up the Things.

[laughs]
- [gasps]

If we pulled up
two Things with this rope,

how easy would it be to pull up
only one thing,

like my dress-up trunk?

Maybe this simple
pulling machine

is the one we've
been looking for.

- It is called a pulley.
[laughs]

- We gotta try it![laughs]

- To the Thinga-ma-jigger!



- Okay. One, two, three.

both: Heave!

[grunting]

[splash]

- It's still too heavy!

- And I can't help pull

because I'm holding onto you!

- I don't get it.

The rope worked so well
in Machine-a-ma-zoo.

Are we missing something?

- Hmm.
Lifting the trunk didn't work,

and now pulling it up
isn't working either.

- Hmm.

What to do,
what to do?

- I guess it's time
for Plan B.

- [sighs]
I'll go get the box.



- You gave it a good try.

- Fish, we won't be needing
this rope anymore.

- Okay.
I'll help untie this end.

- [grunts]
- Hey, put me down!

- Sorry, Fish!

How did that happen?

I pulled down,
and you went up!

- Whoa!



- Very interesting.

[creaking]

- Hmm...
- What's up, Nick?

- It's just like at the well
in Machine-a-ma-zoo!

When we pulled down
on the rope,

the Things came up,
remember?

It's the same thing!

Throwing the rope
over that branch

changed the direction.

- The branch works
just like the pulley!

- Fascinating!

- We built a simple machine

right here
in our backyard!

- And I bet it can help us
lift more than just a fish.

- Ready to give it another go?

- You bet! Heave!

[both grunting]



- Wow! Pulling down

is helping us
move the trunk up.

- Up, up, up!
Whoo-hoo!



[all cheering]



[both grunt]

- Wow!
Our pulling machine worked!

- Aren't simple machines
simply wonderful?

- They sure are.

- And so is this
dress-up trunk.

There's all kinds
of great stuff in here!

- Yep, it's only the best
dress-up trunk in the world.

- Well, if you'll excuse me,
it's time to tidy up.

- Okay,
I'll help down here.

Whoa!
Cat, I'm still attached!

- Oh. Oh, boy.

Sorry, Fish!

- Sorry? What for?

- It's fun!

[all laughing]

- Introducing a Thing...

- Doo-doo-doo, ha!

- Or two...
- Doo-ha!

- About...
[both chatter]

Simple machines!

When Thing One and Thing Two
have a big job to do,

they use simple machines
in Machine-a-ma-zoo.

[both laughing]

With these simple machines,
they can get the job done.

Can you see how they work now,
Thing Two and Thing One?

Now, a pulley's a rope
that goes over a wheel.

If you're lifting things up,
then a pulley's ideal.

- Ta-da! Whoa!
- Ho-ho!

- A lever's a bar
resting on a support.

When it lifts up our Things,
is it work or a sport?

[laughter]

Okay, Things,
that's enough now.

[laughter]

[whistles]

both: Huh? Oh!

[chattering]
Ta-da!

- A wheel on an axle
moves heavy things well.

- [grunting]

[humming]

- With no wheel, it's harder,
as Thing Two can tell.

- [laughs, humming]

- These are simple machines
at Machine-a-ma-zoo,

but they're also in places
much closer to you.

[laughter]

If you open your eyes
and look all around,

you might see some here
in this little playground.

So, I hope you now know,
from these comical scenes,

a thing or two
about simple machines.

[soft music]



- Okay, Fish, we need you to
settle this once and for all.

- Absolutely!

I am ready to go.

- What's the most important
superpower?

- Speed...
- Or strength?

- Well, that is a very
interesting question.

- Speed, right?

I'm Super Sally,
the fastest slider anywhere!

Watch!

Whoo-hoo!

Top that, Nick!

- You mean...
Mighty Nick!

Watch this, Fish!

[grunts]
I am so strong,

I can lift this bucket of sand
in one hand,

and lift you
in my other hand!

[grunts]
- Whoa, whoa!

- See?
- Whoa, easy!

both: Whoa!

- Whoa!
- Whoa. Ah.

- So speed is the most
important superpower.

Right, Fish?
- Yeah!

Speed is great.
- No, strength!

- Uh, yeah, strength
is very important too.

- Fish, you have to make
a choice.

- Uh, uh, uh...

- How about "sprength"?
[laughs]

- Cat!
- What's "sprength"?

- I mixed
your superpower, speed,

with your superpower, strength,

and got sprength!

Isn't that super?

- Sprength.
I wish I thought of that.

- Sprength is good!

It rhymes with strength,

the most important superpower!

- Uh-uh.

Watch how fast I can zoom
down the slide, Cat!

I'm Super Sally!

Whoo-hoo!

[grunts] Huh?

- I hate to point this out,
Super Sally,

but that wasn't so speedy.

- But I just zoomed down
a minute ago.

- Hmm. Ah!
Oh, dear.

- What is it, Cat?

- I'm afraid you've got
a serious case

of loss of slideyness.

- Loss of slideyness?

But why would she lose
her slideyness?

- Well, I don't know that,

but I do know where
to find out.

Hmm, let me see where--
aha!

My frictionary.

Ah!

The number one reason
for the loss of slideyness

is too much of a force
called friction.

- A force?
You mean, like a superpower?

- What kind of superpower

stops someone
from sliding fast?

- Well, there's no better
place to go

than the Frictionarium

for a "fact and friction"
expedition.

Shall we go?

Your father won't mind at all
if we do.



- Dad, can we go
to the Frictionarium

for a "fact and friction"
expedition?

- The Frictionarium?

Well, if you don't want
to stick around here,

I guess that's
the place to be.

- We can go, we can go!
- I know, I know!

To the Thinga-ma-jigger!

Buckle up!

[horn honks]

[playful music]

[whirs, clicks]

Flip the Jigger-ma-whizzer!

[boing]

[exciting music]



Isn't this fun?

both: Whoo-hoo!

- ♪ Here we go, go, go,
go on an adventure ♪

♪ The Thinga-ma-jigger
is up and away ♪

both: ♪ Go, go, go,
go on an adventure ♪

♪ We're flying
with the Cat in the Hat today ♪

- Frictionarium's near.
Let's all give a cheer.

There are slides of all sizes
awaiting you here.



- Wow, this place
is fantastic!

- I can't wait to zoom down
all these slides!

- Same here!

- Well, Super Sally,
which slide will it be?

- I don't know.
There's so many to choose from!

- [gasps] Look at that giant
loop-de-loop!

- Not doing that one.

What about these slides?

- Okay.
Race you to the top!

- [laughs]

- Mighty Nick
picks this one.

Watch me...go!

Whoo-hoo!

Yeah!

Come on, Super Sally!

Pick a slide, and slide!

- I'll try this one.

- Well, doesn't that look
like an excellent choice.

- Here I go!

[squeaking]
Uhh!

Huh?

Oh, no, my slideyness
is still lost!

- But that
doesn't make sense!

How come I zoomed
and you didn't?

- Especially since
I'm Super Sally.

- I'm going down your slide
to see what happens!

Watch this!

Whee!

[squeaking]

- Now you've lost
your slideyness!

- But I had it
on the other slide.

- Hmm. [gasps]

I should try your slide!

- Remember what my friend
Zippy Zaroo used to say:

if at first,
you don't slide fast,

slide, slide again!

- All right, here goes!

Whoo-hoo! Yipee!

- You did it!

- Super Sally got
her slideyness back!

- Yay, Sally!

- Yahoo!

- Our turn!

- Cat, what are you doing?

- Hold onto your fins,
'cause now the sliding begins!

Yahoo!
- Whoa!

[laughter]

- [groaning]

- All right!
Super Sally is back,

and so is my slideyness.

- I knew you had it in you!

- Hmm.

Sally got her slideyness back
on one slide,

but not on the other side.

- Yeah.
What's with that?

And why did Nick lose
his slideyness on my slide?

- Well, now that you
mention it,

those are excellent questions!

- There's only one thing to do.

- Please don't say we have to
try out the other slides.

- We have to try out
the other slides!

- I think I'll sit this one
out, if you don't mind.

- All right, Fish, but you'll
be missing a whole lot of fun.

- [sighs] Phew.

- To the slides!

both: To the slides!

- Ready, set, go!

- Slidey!
- Sort of slidey.

- Oh! Ahh!
[squeaking]

Ah![groans]

Not all that slidey.

- We slid down all the slides!

- Some were really slidey.

- And some weren't
slidey at all,

but we don't know why.

- What's different?

- We must be missing something.

- Well, you know
what I always say:

if you look very closely
and open your mind,

you just might be surprised
by the things that you find.

- Look very closely?
- With what?

- With the Micro-ma-boodle!

It makes the smallest things
look ginormous

so you can see
what's really happening.

- Cool!
So we can see

what's making us slide
or not slide.

- But if we're all looking,
who's going to be sliding?

- When you two can't do
what you need to get done,

it's a good time to call on
Thing Two and Thing One.

[whistles]

[both cheering]

both: Hello!

- Now let's see.



Okay, Thing One,
slide down the slidey slide.

- [grunts, huffs]

[both chattering]

Whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo,
whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

- What happened?
It was too fast to see.

- No problem.

Let's hit the replay button
and take a closer look.

[whirring]

[mysterious music]

- I still don't
see anything, Cat.

- Let's watch Thing Two slide
down the not-so-slidey slide.



- [grunts]
Wahoo!

Oh. Hmm.

- Let's take a closer look.

- Look how rough
the slide is.

The other slide
wasn't like that.

It was smooth.

- I think you're
onto something, Nick.

Let's go check!
- Okay.

[upbeat music]

[squeaking]

This side is super smooth.

- Let me check this one.

This one is really rough.

The slide with a rougher
surface stopped us.

- And that must be
what makes friction.

- [laughs]
Now you've got it!

My, aren't you two
so clever.

Hey, Fish!
They've got it!

- We can go home! Yay!

Oh. Oh!

Oh, help!

both: Oh, no!
- Fish!

Super Sally is on the way!

- H-E-L-P!
Help!



- Whoa!

- Super Sally's got you!

- And Mighty Nick's got you!

[laughs]

- Now, that's what I call
spectacular teamwork.

- I'm so glad
I got my slideyness back

in time to rescue Fish.

- And I'm even gladder!

Can we go home, now that
we have all the answers?

- We don't have
all the answers.

- We don't?

- We still don't know why

Sally lost her
slideyness at home.

- I think we have to take
a closer look.



Look!

We don't need
the Micro-ma-boodle

to see what's happening.

- Yeah, it's covered
with bumpy stuff.

It's really rough.

What is it?
- I remember!

When you showed Fish
how mighty you were,

you spilled some water
and sand on the slide.

- And when it dried,
it made the slide rough!

- And that's why
I had too much friction

and lost my slideyness!

- And that's why I say,
and it's totally true,

there simply is nothing
that you two can't do.

[laughing]
Hey.

Who turned the rain on?

- We have to see
if we're right.

- And there's only one way
to know for sure.

Let's clean off the slide!

[squeaking]

- Slide, Super Sally!Slide!



- Wahoo!

[laughs]
Yay!

- We did it!

- And you did it by putting
your two superpowers together,

just like...
all: Sprength!
