♪ The Cat in the Hat
is about to appear ♪

♪ He's whizzing over
to whisk you away ♪

♪ On a fabulous journey
today ♪

- He's coming!
- ♪ Now he's arrived

♪ In the Thinga-ma-jigger,
the thing that he drives ♪

♪ He's a cat
and he's oodles of fun ♪

♪ With his hairy helpers,
Thing Two and Thing One ♪

- Whoo-hoo!



- Whoa!



[laughter]



- Whoa!
- Wahoo!

- ♪ It's the Cat in the Hat

♪ All of our adventures
start like that ♪

♪ Wherever you're going,
wherever you're at ♪

♪ The Cat in the Hat
knows a lot about... ♪

- ♪ He knows a lot about,
he knows a lot about ♪

all: ♪ He knows a lot
about that ♪

[laughter]

[upbeat music]



- You won't get that ball
past me.

- Just watch me.[grunts]

- [grunts]

- Ooh!

[ball whooshes]

- Wanna try again?

- There's no point.
That log's in the way.

- Why is it here anyway?

- Mom's gonna use it
for an art project.

- Well,
let's move it so we can play.

both: [grunting]

- Whoa, that's heavy.

- Good morning, sports fans!

- Hat!
[laughs]

[playful music]

- Can I play?
Who's winning?

- No one is.
That log is in the way.

- We tried to move it,
but we can't.

- What, this little thing?

Not to worry.
I'll just lift...

[grunts]

Ah...
[grunting]

Hmm, that is heavy.
Ugh!

- If we were stronger,
we could move it.

- Huh...
[gasps]

Exercise makes
your muscles stronger.

Maybe if exercise,
we'll get strong enough.

Cat, what do you think?

- I think if you
wanna move that log,

I know just where
we need to go.

Your mother will not mind
at all if you do.

- Mom!

Can Sally and I go with
the Cat in the Hat

to exercise and get stronger?

- Getting exercise is always

a smart thing to do...
[chuckles]

- We can go!
We can go!

- I know!
I know!

To the Thinga-ma-jigger.

Buckle up.

[horn honks]

[playful music]

[whirs, clicks]

Flip the Jigger-ma-whizzer!

[boing]

[exciting music]



Isn't this fun?

both: Whoo-hoo!

- ♪ Here we go, go, go,
go on an adventure ♪

♪ The Thinga-ma-jigger
is up and away ♪

both: ♪ Go, go, go,
go on an adventure ♪

♪ We're flying
with the Cat in the Hat today ♪

[rousing music]



- Here's the perfect locale
for what you want to do.

It's the wonderful world
of Machine-a-ma-zoo.

- Whoa!
- Awesome!

- Hey, Cat,

I thought were going
somewhere to get stronger.

- Right.

This is the
perfect place to come

when you have
something heavy to move.

Look around.
What do you see?

- A lot of machines.

- Oh, I get it.

Exercising with
this heavy stuff

will help us get stronger.

Cat, look.

Maybe we can practice lifting
this bucket up and down.

- Using that bucket
on a pulley?

- Good thinking, Nick.

That could build up
our muscles.

[pulley creaking]

- I don't think so.
It's too easy.

We need to practice
lifting something heavy.

- I wonder
what else there is...

[gasps]
What about this ball?

[grunts]
[ball thuds]

Whoa,
this ball is really heavy!

- Huh, let's see.

[grunts]
You're right.

It's heavy!
[ball thuds]

Phew.

- So moving this would be
just the exercise we need

to get stronger.

- Well, as your mother said,

"exercise is always
a smart thing to do."

- Bet I can lift it
farther than you.

- You're on.
How will we measure?

- Why don't you start here
next to Fish,

and I'll measure
how far you can move it.

- Okay, I'll go first.

[drum roll tapping]

[grunting, panting]

Phew.
That is a workout.

- Well done, Nick.

Now, Sally, let's see
if you can move it from here

back to Fish.



- [grunting]

Whoa, it's slipping!

[yelps]

[playful music]

- [laughs]

You moved it way farther
than I did.

- Well, the ball
rolled itself part of the way.

You got more of a workout.

- Then I guess we'd better find
some more ways to exercise.

- That sounds okay.
Lead the way.

Let's look at these
simple machines over here.

There's a screw and a ramp
and this thing called a "gear."

- [grunts]

I don't think
we can lift these.

They're both
stuck in the ground.

- This ramp isn't
stuck in the ground,

but it looks so heavy.

We'd never be able to lift it,
even if we had huge muscles.

- So there's nothing to lift?
Well, I'm really miffed.

Whoa!
Oof!

- Hey, the ramp slid!
- [gasps]

Sliding is another way
to move things,

and it takes muscles too.

- Isn't it lucky I found
something you can "slide"?

- Okay,
I'll go first this time.

Only I can't see
where I'm going.

- I'll be your lookout.

- One flying Fish coming up!

- All right,
the path ahead is clear.

Ready, set, slide!

- [grunting]

[punchy music]



Sliding is almost
as hard as lifting.

That really gave
my muscles a workout.

- Way to go, Sally.

My turn.

- Ready,

set, slide!

- [grunting]



- Whoa, look out!
Turn, quick!

- Oh no!

Whoa!

- Whoa!

- What happened?

- When the ramp went over
those round poles,

they started to roll.

- Rolling the ramp was a lot
easier than sliding it.

- [gasps]
Just like how rolling that ball

was easier than carrying it.

- I see.
Aren't you two clever?

- Hey, that big wheel
might be good exercise.

- Cool.

It looks like
one of those wheels

that pet hamsters run in.

- And running
is great exercise.

I'm gonna try it.

Huh?
The wheel won't turn.

- A wheel that won't spin?
Oh, that simply won't do.

What it need is some help
from Thing One and Thing Two.

[whistles]

- Whoo-hoo!
- Whee-hee-hee-hee!

both: [laughing]

Hello!

- Things, this wheelie dealie
has a "wheel-y" big problem.

It won't spin.
Can you help?

both: Uh-huh!
Ya-hoo!

[panting, laughing]

[grunting]

- Wait, I see the problem.
Look.

That wedge is
stopping it from moving.

both: [grunting]

- Let's see if I'm strong
enough to pull it out.

[grunts]

[wheel creaking]
[Things screaming]

Oh no!

both: [whimpering]

- Come back, Things!

- They can't.
They're going downhill!

- Hurry, we need
to catch up to them!

- Whee!
- [whimpering]

Whoa, whoa, whoa!
[laughs]

both: [grunting]
Phew.

- Huh?

[panicked chattering]

- Uh-oh,
they're coming right back.

Run!

[Things chattering]

They're never gonna
stop rolling!

[panicked music]

both: [screaming]

[grunts]

[chatters]

- Well,
that's one way to stop it.

- [gasps]
Did you see that, Nick?

When it was on its edge,
it rolled like a ball.

- But when it landed
on its flat side,

it slid and stopped.

- Hmm.

Because flat sides don't roll,
they slide.

- Right, like the ramp.

- Well, we've got to
move the wheelie dealie

back to its spot.

Hmm, are you
strong enough to carry it?

- I wonder.

Uh, Cat,
there might be an easier way.

- Really?
Do tell.

- We can roll it
the same way it got here.

- For helping move weight,
there's no tool more ideal

than a simple machine that
is known as "The Wheel."

- A simple machine?

- Cat, did you know
all along that

this was a simple machine?

- Well, I do know
a lot about them...

[chuckles]

Let's get this wheel rolling,
shall we?

all: [grunting]

Things: Ta-da!

[playful music]

[victorious music]

[cheers and applause]

- Well, what do you think?

Did you get strong enough
to move this log?

- I think we were always
strong enough to move it.

Look at the shape of it.

- Hmm, it has two flat ends,

but it's mostly round,

kind of like the wheel
in Machine-a-ma-zoo.

- So we didn't need to be
strong enough to lift it.

We needed to be
smart enough to roll it.

- So let's roll.

Ready?
- Ready!

- One, two, three!

[kids grunting]

- Well, look at that.

They rolled it
clear across the yard.

- So they didn't need
stronger muscles.

- Nope, just stronger brains.

[laughter]

- Well, you didn't
get stronger in only one day,

but you surely got smarter...
[laughs]

Now who wants to play?

- I do!
- Me!

[laughter]

[rousing music]



- Introducing a Thing...
- [chatters]

- Or two.
- [chatters]

- About...
Things: [chattering]

- Simple machines!

When Thing One and Thing Two
have a big job to do,

they use simple machines
in Machine-a-ma-zoo.

It's a simple machine
called an axle and wheel.

If you're moving big loads,
it is simply ideal.

Wait!

Show us how they can
go up a hill, if you please.

- Uh-huh!

- With a wheel on an axle,
it's simply a breeze.

both: Yay!

- While rolling things up
is so easy to do,

if you let the cart go,
it rolls down the hill too.

To keep it from rolling,
you could use this wedge.

See, it's wide at the top,
and it has a thin edge.

- Hmm.
Aha!

Things: Yay!

- This simple machine
helps in stopping the cart,

but some grown-ups use wedges
to split things apart.

Things: Huh?
- Care for a demonstration?

- Uh-huh.
- Hee-hee!

- Uh-oh!
- [grunts]

[mellow music]



both: Ooh.
- Uh-oh.

- [yelps]
- Whee!

- These are simple machines
at Machine-a-ma-zoo,

but they're also in places
much closer to you.

If you open your eyes,
and you look all around,

you might see some here
in this little playground.

- [chatters]

- So I hope you now know
from these comical scenes

a thing or two
about simple machines.

[upbeat music]



- Okay, Sally, let's see
how far my glider flies.

- Let it fly!

[dramatic music]

- It flew very well,
just not very far.

- Oh, I just remembered
a trick my mom told me about.

She said if you add
extra weight on the front

with something like
this paper clip,

it'll fly better.

- Give it a try.

[glider whooshing]

- Adding that clip
really helped.

- Look at it go!

- [grunts]

Maybe if we add other things,

it'll fly even better.

Let's see what else
we've got in here.

- We could make it
fly farther and look cooler.

- Ooh, how about some glitter?

- These stickers look cool.
- And check out these beads.

- Add buttons too!
- What are you doing?

I can't see.
Oh, this is gonna be good!

- [gasps] Oh!

How about adding
this red and white cloth?

- You can't use that.
That's my hat!

[laughs]
kids: Cat!

- [laughs]
Hi, Cat.

You got here just in time
to see my new, improved glider.

- It's very sparkly.

- We added things
to make it fly better--

oh, and look better.

- Well, it sure isn't
a plain plane anymore...

[chuckles]

- Let's see it fly now.

Aww.

I really wanted this glider
to be the best flier ever.

- We don't have
much else to add.

- If your glider's in need
of a sparkle or thrill,

you should
check out the warehouse

at Odds-and-Ends-ville.

- The warehouse at
Odds-and-Ends-ville?

- [laughs]
You'll love it!

It's great, big building
filled with everything

from doodads
to whatchamacallits.

- Maybe it'll have something
to make your glider fly better.

Let's go!

- Your mother will not
mind at all if you do.

- Mom!

Can Sally and I go with
the Cat in the Hat

to find something to make
my glider fly better?

- [chuckles]
Of course.

Whatever it takes
to make your idea soar.

- We can go!
We can go!

- I know!
I know!

To the Thinga-ma-jigger.

Buckle up.

[horn honks]

[playful music]

[whirs, clicks]

Flip the Jigger-ma-whizzer!

[boing]

[exciting music]



Isn't this fun?

both: Whoo-hoo!

- ♪ Here we go, go, go,
go on an adventure ♪

♪ The Thinga-ma-jigger
is up and away ♪

both: ♪ Go, go, go,
go on an adventure ♪

♪ We're flying
with the Cat in the Hat today ♪

[rousing music]



- This old warehouse
is just like a fabulous store.

It's got all that you need
and then, oh, so much more.

- How cool!
[wind whooshing]

[gasps]
Oh no!

My glider!

[glider whooshing]

- It flew right into
that open window.

- Lucky for us, that's
exactly where we're going.

[playful music]

[Thinga-ma-jigger clunks]

- Come on, let's go.



[grunts]Phew.

The door's locked.

- Is there a key?

- Hmm,
I know there's one around here.

Where could it be?

- Hey, what's that?

- Aha!
That's where I left it.

The chunky door key.

- [grunts]
Huh?

Are you sure
this is the right key?

It doesn't fit into the lock.

- Yes, the chunky door key is
more chunky than the door key.

Do you think that's a problem?
- So look at my house key.

It's thin,
so it fits right into the lock.

It doesn't have
any jewels on it.

- So if the jewels
are getting the way,

what would happen
if we took them off?

- Give it a try!

[laughter]

- Oh.

I wonder what's underneath
all those jewels.

- It's a normal key.

[lock clicks]
It fits!

- You got it to work,
and now I can see

that removing the jewels
was plainly the key.

After you, you clever two.

kids: Whoa.

- The Odds-and-Ends-ville
warehouse has

positively everything
you ever wanna add to anything.

- Well, we can't add anything
to my glider till we find it.

- How can we find one little
glider in all this stuff?

- Maybe we need something

to help us
look at things up close

without us actually
being up close.

- You mean something
like a telescope?

- That's exactly what we need.

- I'm sure I remember seeing

some kind of scope
in the warehouse.

Now, where would it be?

- I spy with my little eyes
something that looks

kinda like a telescope.

But it's got something weird
at the end.

- Aha!
[laughs]

It's the amazing
tele-kaleidoscope.

- A tele-what-a-scope?

- Tele-kaleidoscope.

Have a look...
[laughs]

You see,
you turn this part at the end.

That's the kaleidoscope part.

[tele-kaleidoscope cranking]

- Wow, it's beautiful!

But what am I looking at?

- There are pieces of
colorful glass at one end.

When you turn it,
the images jumble and bend.

- Cool.
Have a look, Nick.

- [laughs]
Is that you, Fish?

There are lots of you!

- Sounds amazing,

but how is that gonna
help you find your glider?

- Good question.

Turn the middle part.
That's the telescope.

It helps you see
faraway things up close.

[mellow music]

- Whoa.

Now all the Fishes are huge!

I don't think it's helping.

I see so many things at once,

it's hard to see
if my glider's there.

- Wait,
the chunky door key

worked better when
we took the jewels off.

- I wonder what will happen

if we take the
kaleidoscope part off.

[whirrs, clicks]

- Aha!

Now the telescope works
the way a telescope should.

Everything is big
and clear and close-up.

- What do you see, Sally?

- Hmm...

[gasps]

I see something sparkly
on top of that tall shelf.

Oh, I think it's the glider!

- Yes!Come on!

There!
My glider--you found it!

- But how are we gonna
get it down from way up there?

- [sighs] There's not a thing
we can do to get it down.

- When you're worried
there isn't a thing you can do,

it's exactly the time
for Thing One and Thing Two!

[whistles]

- Whoo-hoo!
- Whee-hee-hee-hee!

both: [panting]

Hello!
- Hello, Things.

Can you help us find a way
to get our glider down?

Things: Uh-huh!

[metal crashing]

- Oh dear.

[Things chattering dazedly]

Perfect, you found
the Odds-and-End-ville

ladder department/

- [chatters]

- [chatters]

- Step right up
and check them out.

Here's a love ladder.

- But you can't
climb on the steps.

- You're right,
but you have to admit--

it's got a lot of heart...
[laughs]

How about a ladder-adder?

It's great when you just
need to reach a little higher.

- But too short to help us.

- Hmm.
I see your point.

[ladder thunks]
- What about that one?

It looks like it's tall enough
to let us see up high.

- That's the one we need.
Let's move it together.



- Whoa, why is the ladder
so bouncy?

- That, my friends,
is a pogo ladder.

It helps you bounce even higher
than the ladder can reach.

Things: Ooh.

- Do you wanna give it a try?

Things: Uh-huh!

[chattering]

- Whoa!
- Oh no!

- Follow those bouncing Things!

[Things laughing]

- Get them!
Whoa!

Gotcha.
Hold it steady.

- Whoo-hoo!
- Whee-hee-hee-hee!

- Phew.

Maybe a ladder with springs
isn't the best way

for the Things
to reach up high.

- You're right, Fish.

Let's take the springs off.

- There.

Without the springs,
it's just a ladder,

and it works the way
a ladder should.

- Let's try it.

[upbeat music]

- Give it a try now, Things.

Things: [chattering]

[grunting]

Huh?

- I think the ladder's
just a little too short.

- So the problem's not solved
by removing the springs.

It's still out of reach
of our dear, little Things.

- So we need to
add something to the ladder

to help them reach...
[gasps]

both: The ladder-adder!

- Here you go, Things.
Add this to the top.

Things: Whoo-hoo!

[chattering]

Ta-da!

all: [cheering]

- Thanks, Things.

- What an idea.
You two are so smart.

You rescued the glider
by adding a part.

- Now that we finally
got your glider,

what are you gonna add to it
to make it fly better?

- We know exactly
what to add to it.

Right, Nick?
- Right.

Okay, there goes
the last sparkly bit.

- Hm, I don't get it.
What are you gonna add?

- Nothing!
- Right.

This glider flew perfectly
after I added the paperclip.

- So adding that helped it fly,

and all the other stuff
we added made it look cooler.

- But the glider
stopped doing the one job

it's supposed to do--fly!

[glider whooshing]

Look at it go!

[rousing music]

- What an adventure
you two had today,

and what a discovery
you made on the way.

You found out that adding
things might be okay,

but sometimes, it's better
to take things away.

[laughter]

[upbeat music]
