01x02 - The Rolie Polie

Post by bunniefuu »

Hey, is this thing on?

* Hey, sid, what do you say?

What you want to learn today?

I want to know why things
happen and how and I want to

Know everything now--oh, yeah!

How does this thing work?

Why does that stuff change?

How does that do what
it just did? Hmm.

What's up with the sky?

Do you think I could fly?

The world is spinning
and I want to know why

I got a lot of questions
and big ideas

I'm sid the science kid *
[captioning made possible by

The jim henson company
and friends of nci]

Hi there. I'm sid.

Welcome to my room.

Hey, come here for a second.

I got something cool
to show you.

Now, today I'd like to introduce
you to my pets.

You can hardly see them, can
you? Well, that's because my

Pets are really, really small
rolie polies.

They're a kind of bug, I think.

Well, that one's ruby
and that's glenn.

Or is that one glenn and that's
ruby?

Ok, well, I don't even know
because they're so small

To tell. In fact, my rolie
polies are so small that I don't

Even know how they move.

I mean, do they have tiny legs?

Or do they walk? Or skip?

I just got to know!

[Drum roll]
how to rolie polies move?

[Echoing]
sid? It's breakfast time.

Ha ha! Oh, boy! Breakfast.

Yay!

Ha ha! Breakfast time!

Whoo!

[Humming]
gah!

[Giggles]
oh. Good morning, sid.

Good morning, sid.

I'm pretending to be
a rolie polie.

A rolie polie?

We always called those
"pill bugs."

I've heard that, too, but
they're actually not bugs.

They're not?

They're not?

Nope. Rolie polies are part
of the crustacean family.

The what family?

Crustaceans.

See, they're animals like crabs
or lobsters.

[All laughing]
rolie polies are kind of like

Those animals, except they live
on land.

And their real scientific name
is: armadillidium vulgare.

I remembered that from my high
school science class!

Wow, dad learned something
in school, and he remembered!

I'm impressed, too, mort.

Ah, thank you.

So, sid...why were you
pretending to be a rolie polie?

Well, 'cause I've been trying
to see how my rolie polies

Move, but when I pick 'em up,
they just roll in a ball...

So, um, do either of you know
how rolie polies move?

Hmm...good question.

Well, how do you move?

Let's see, on my legs.

Hmm. So maybe rolie polies
have legs like I do.

I have an idea. Let's see
how other little creatures

Move around.

We can do some research
on the computer.

Ok.

Here we are. Take a look.

See, ants walk on legs.

And here's a photo of a really
small crab walking on tiny legs.

Hmm. I can't seem to find
a photo of a rolie polie.

Ok, secret agent scientist
sid, I have got a mission for

You...

Cool.

I want you to investigate
how rolie polies move

And report back to us.

Aye-aye, dad! Hey, mom, can I
bring my rolie polies to school

So my friends can help me?

Sure, that sounds like
a great idea.

Oh, and, sid, remember,
gabriela is coming over

For a playdate after school.

Cool!

Wait a minute.

I gotta eat!

It's almost time for school!

* I love my mom
uh-huh...

My mom is cool
uh-huh...

But now it's time
for havin' fun at school *

Yeah!

[Mom laughs]
* I'm lookin' for my friends

I'm lookin' for you
there's gabriela! *

* Watch what I can do!
La-la-whoo!

La-la-whoo!

Oh, yeah!

Wow!

* I'm lookin' for my friends
I'm lookin' for you...

Hey, there's gerald! *
* Yeah, check out my moves!

I'm a rock star!

Cool!

* I'm lookin' for my friends
I'm lookin' for you...

Hey, there's may! *
* May I show you

How I groove? *
[Humming]

Hey!

Groovy!

* We're looking for our
friends! We're looking for you!

Hey, there's sid! *
Did you hear the one

About the kid who wanted to
know everything about

Everything?

That's you!

You got me!

* We're looking for
our friends!

And look what we found!

We found each other...

Friends! *
And now it's time for the

Sid survey!

Hello, I am sid...roving
reporter with today's survey.

The question: have you ever
seen a teeny tiny animal move?

You can think about a tiny
animal you've seen, too.

Oh, hello, gabriela.

Hello.

Say, have you ever seen
a teeny tiny animal move?

Yes.

At a museum, I saw a long bug
called a centipede walking

On a rock. It had lots and lots
of legs!

Wow! That sounds like
a whole lotta legs!

Hey, remember, we've got
a playdate today!

I know! I can't wait.

Me, neither.

Whoo!

Yeah!

Oh, good morning, may.

Good morning.

Have you ever seen a teeny
tiny animal move?

Oh, yes, I have!

I like to watch ladybugs.

They walk on legs, and they fly!

And they're really cute!

I agree, may. Thank you.

You're welcome.

Hey, gerald!

...and so he built...

Gerald, have you ever seen
a teeny tiny animal move?

Oh, yeah. My dog chester.

Well, chester's a dog,
not really a teeny tiny animal.

Well, yeah, I know but
there was a flea on my dog

Chester. And the flea was
jumping all over the place

Like this! Jump! Jump! Jump!

He was a jumping flea!

Ok. Thanks, jumpin' flea guy!

Ooh! [Sighs] and now the results
of my survey.

Gabriela says she watched
something called a centipede

Walk around.

May says she likes to watch
ladybugs walk and fly.

And gerald says his dog named
chester has jumping fleas.

Maybe you thought of
a tiny animal that moves, too!

Well, there you have it!

I am sid, roving reporter,
and teeny tiny animal expert.

Everybody! Rug time!

That's teacher susie!

* It's rug time!

Come on in! Rug time!

Take a seat! Rug time! *
We're ready.

* Everybody, move your feet
rug time!

Teacher susie!

Good times on the way
rug time! Come on in!

We've got a lot to learn today *
jump! Jump! Jump!

Hey, gerald, bounce on over
here! Ok.

Jump, jump!

Splat!

[Laughter]
so...who wants to share

Something with the class?

A story? A song?

Susie, I have something
to share.

Go ahead, sid.

Check these out.

They're so cool. Found them
in the backyard. Ok. You ready?

My rolie polies!

Ooh!

Cool.

Glenn, ruby...

This is school.

Hi, rolie polies! I'm may.

Don't be afraid.

Rolie polies, welcome
to our school.

We're glad sid brought you
today.

Well, I had to.

See, I'm trying to answer
a question...and I thought maybe

You all could help me.

Here it is.

How do rolie polies move?

Ohh...

They probably have
little tiny legs

Like a centipede...

But not as many.

I have an idea. They're
called rolie polies...

So maybe they roll?

They might do all those
things, but they're too small

To see.

And every time I pick one up,
they roll up into a ball!

If we make your rolie
polies bigger, then we could

See them!

Hey, sid, let's invent a "bigger
machine" and turn them into

Rolie polies the size of bears!

Good idea!

That's funny!

Actually, that is a good
idea, gerald.

It is?

Yeah. Well, maybe we can't
make them bigger, but there is

A science tool we can use to
magnify them.

Magnify?

Magnify. It's a science
word that means...

To make things look bigger.

So, what's the science tool
that can magnify things?

Well, scientists, where
do we keep all our wonderful

Science tools?

In the super fab lab!

That's right! So, grab your
journals, and let's go!

Yay!

Ok!

* Super fab lab!
Observe. Compare. Contrast.

Ahh!

We're going to do an
investigation I call the

Magnification observation!

Ooh. Wow.

That sounds fun.

Oh, neat-o.

Go ahead. Each of you
take one.

Thank you.

Thank you.

And you guys?

Now, don't hold it too close.

Try moving it back and forth
like this. Ok?

Then tell me what you see.

Hmm. Hey, I see gerald's
freckles. They look really big!

Cool!

Oh, sid! Look at this blue
crayon.

Yeah, it looks huge!

I know!

Sid! Sid! Your rolie polies--
they're moving!

Oh, man!

My rolie polies look so big
through my magnifying glass!

Gerald, you have to come
and see this!

Ooh, yeah. Wow! Look at that!

Now you can see how
these little guys move!

Look at them go!

You're a scientist.

You can try this, too!

Ok, everyone, choose
a magnifying glass and try

Looking through it.

Look at your own thumb
and your hands.

Look at your friends' ears,
teeth, and eyes.

Go ahead and explore around you.

What kinds of things can you
see with your magnifying glass?

What kinds of things can you
see with your magnifying glass?

Now use your magnifying glass
to look at the rolie polies.

Do they look bigger?

Can you observe how the rolie
polies move?

Can you see their legs?

Remember to draw your
observations in your journals.

Remember to draw your
observations in your journals.

Ok, scientists,
I can't wait to see what kinds

Of observations you made.

Sid, let's see your
journal first.

Oh, um, sure.

First, I drew a rolie polie
without using my magnifying

Glass. I couldn't see any legs.

But and when I looked
through my magnifying glass,

I could observe that a rolie
polie has legs!

And that's how it moves!

On little legs!

You found the little legs!

Great job, sid.

May, now let's look at your
journal.

Ok. I drew what gerald's
freckles look like on this page.

And on this page, I drew what
they looked like through the

Magnifying glass.

See, they look like big squares.

May, I love your pictures.

Very creative!

Thank you.

I am so proud of
all my scientists!

You know so much about using
magnifying glasses to observe

Things. I think it's time
to play with all your

New observation skills!

Yay!

Playtime!

Go ahead.

Come on! Let's go.

It's time for...

Good laughter-noon!

[Laughing]
what do you call

A rolie polie who wears a badge
and helps people?

I don't know, what?

A rolie-pol-ice officer!

[Laughing]
what kind of music do

Rolie polies listen to?

I don't know, what?

Rock and roll-ie polie music!

[Laughing]
hey, sid! Would you like

To hear some rock and roll-ie
rolie music?

Oh, sure, may.

* Hey-hey, I'm rockin' out
to rolie polie music

Rolie polie, rolie polie
yeah! *

Gabriela?

Yes?

Why was the rolie polie
always late for school?

I don't know. Why was the
rolie polie always late

For school?

Well, 'cause if you had to
put on shoes every morning,

You'd be late for school, too!

[Laughing]
let's sing! * Rolie polie

Rolie polie music!

Rolie polie
rolie polie music!

Rolie polie
rolie polie music! *

Now, that's funny.

[Laugh track plays]
hey, gabriela, come on up.

Coming.

Hey, sid, you like
rolie polies, right?

Yeah, I love my rolie polies.

Well, I like bugs, too,
and we're best friends.

So let's start a club.

The bug club!

Yeah! I like that!

We'll look for bugs together!

Uh-huh!

And this is our bug club
helicopter!

Ooh!

We're looking for bugs!

[Imitating helicopter sounds]
ooh! I see something!

I see a bug!

Land the helicopter! Let's go!

Ok. We're landed. Cool.

Right behind you.

Ooh. Come on, sid.

Come on. Look, look, look!

[Gasps]
wow! It has lots of legs.

I think it's a caterpillar.

I think you're right!

I love being in the bug club!

Me, too!

Oooh! We need a special
bug club handshake.

Ooh, ooh, yeah!

Bzzzzzz!

Bug club!

[Both buzzing]
and now...

It's time...

For susie...

To sing!

Go, susie!

Oh, why, thank you.

Thank you. So, I have question.

Anybody want to hear
a magnifying glass sing about

How great it is to make things
look bigger?

We do!

Ok, I'll just turn myself
into a magnifying glass, and

Here...i...go!

[Rock-a-billy music plays]
* well, I magnify

You better believe
that's what I do!

I make things look bigger
so you can see 'em better

I bring it all closer to you!

Come on, look through my looking
glass at an itsy bitsy teeny

Tiny blade of grass
dig that detail, my, oh, my!

I magnify
I magnify

And you better believe
it's magnifique!

You wanna see how things
really, really look?

Just pick me up and take a peek
I offer you this invitation

For some up-close and personal
observation

You'll be amazed
when you give me a try

I magnify
when it comes to makin' things

Look bigger
you know I'm in charge!

I make something that's really
small look mighty mighty mighty

Mighty mighty mighty large!

I magnify
I can show you

A butterfly's wings
just look through me

And you can see some of
the world's tiniest things

I'm here to help
pick me up and use me

I'm a scientific tool
you ought to choose me!

Look through my glass and
you'll see why

I magnify
I'm a magnifying glass

Have some fun and try it
I take something little

And I magnify it
dig that detail, my, oh, my

I magnify! *
[Cheering]

Ooh, I want to use
a magnifying glass to see

Butterfly wings, too.

I bet they're beautiful.

Ok, take your magnifying
glasses and explore the world

Around you!

It's time to go home.

* Backseat driving with
grandma

La la la, loo, loo, loo *
ok, you two, tell me

All about the amazing things
you did in school today.

Ok. We found out how rolie
polies move!

Yeah, we used our
magnifying glasses!

Oh, that's exciting.

You know, I use a magnifying
glass at home, too. A big one!

When I'm trying to thread
a needle, for sewing, even with

My glasses, I can't do it--
it's just too small.

Ooh! Ow! Ohh!

Aw, get in there, you! Oh! Ha!

But with my big magnifying
glass, the eye of that needle

Looks as big as a barn door!

Yeah! It looks like I could ride
a bicycle through it!

Oh, without that
magnifying glass, I wouldn't

Have been able to sew that
quilt you sleep under every

Night.

Wow, you made a quilt
for sid!

I sure did!

Wow. Your grandma is awesome!

Yeah, I think so, too.

* We learned something cool
something cool today

We know it upside down
and inside out!

We learned all about...

A magnifying glass! *
Two scientists in the house!

[Applause]
bye, little rolie polies.

Bye! Thanks for letting us
look at you with our magnifying

Glasses.

Well, it's time for
a new bug club adventure!

Yeah!

Ooh, let's find some ants!

Great idea!

Sid, have you found any ants?

What? Nope. Still looking.

Ok.

Sid! Sid! I found some ants!

Oh, boy!

[Both laughing]
wow! Look at 'em all!

Take a look!

Hey, they have , , , ,
, -- legs!

Ants are cool.

Yeah!

Let's keep exploring!

Ok.

I wonder what we'll see next.

Brick, brick...must be a bug
around here somewhere.

Whoa! What is that?

Hey, kids!

What are you two doing?

It's dad!

We're explorers on
a bug club adventure!

Oh, sounds like fun!

So, secret agent and
scientist sid, did you

Investigate how your rolie
polies move?

Yep! We used our magnifying
glasses and learned that

Rolie polies have
little legs!

And that's how they move!

Wow, I am impressed!

Thank you.

Come on, dad. Get down
with us. You can help us

Look for bugs, too!

Ah! Ok! Lookin' for bugs...

Dad is on the case.

We are investigating over here!

Hah!

What a day!

We used our magnifying glasses
to look at our skin and crayons

And all kinds of stuff.

We even looked at my rolie
polies.

Hey, maybe I'll get
a whole bunch of magnifying

Glasses and take them with me
everywhere I go!

Hmm, how can I do that?

Ok, I've got it!

Here's my super duper ooper
shmooper big idea!

I'm going to invent a new hat
that can hold lots of

Magnifying glasses...

And I'll call it:
the "magno-hat!"

Then if I see something small,
like a snail, all I have

To do is call out: "magno!"
And if I want to see

Something smaller, I'll just
call out ""super magno"...

And a stronger magnifying glass
pops out.

And if I want to see
something even smaller,

I'll just call out "super duper
magno," and an even stronger

Magnifying glass pops out!

"Hi, sid!"
And that's my super duper ooper

Shmooper big idea!

Wow, you look so big!

Well, I can't wait to explore
the world with my magnifying

Glass, because...

I am sid...

The science kid! [Echoing]
and remember, keep asking

Questions--lots and lots of
questions! See ya' later,

Scientists!

Hmm. Interesting.

Wow.

What's that?

Oh, hi. We're just checking
out our website. You can explore

With us.

That's a great idea.

Come join us. Visit pbskids.org,
and there's a lot of great

Information for grownups, too.

I think we look pretty good
on the computer.

Observe! Compare!

Contrast! Ahh!

Hey! I know how to observe,
compare, and contrast, and I bet

You do, too. Observe.

That's when you look really
closely at something and listen

To it, maybe even smell it
and feel it. Compare. That's

When you look at things
and think about how they're

The same. Contrast. That's when
you observe things and think

About what's different
about them.

Hey, scientists. There's lots
more amazing science coming your

Way. My friends and I will learn
how to use science tools,

Investigate how things change,
discover our senses, and explore

How to keep our bodies healthy.

So, come join me--sid
the science kid.
