Hey, is this thing on? Ha ha.

* Hey, sid
what do you say?

What you want to learn today? *
* I want to know

Why things happen
and how and I want to

Know everything now
oh, yeah

How does this thing work?

Why does that stuff change?

How does that do what it just
did?

Hmm
what's up with the sky?

You think I could fly?

The world is spinning
and I want to know why

I got a lot of questions
and big ideas

I'm sid the science kid *
[captioning made possible by

The jim henson company
and friends of nci]

[Humming]
wow. I didn't think my baseball

Bat could look any bigger, but
it's huge. Oh, hi. I'm sid.

Welcome to my room! Hey, do you
want to see something really

Cool?

* Ta da
check this out. It's a

Magnifying glass. My teacher
susie gave this to me at school,

And if you look through it, it
makes stuff look a whole lot

Bigger. Whoa. Blip the robot,
you look huge! Ha ha ha! And you

Know what? We also use these
things in school, too. I've got

Myself an estimation jar and a
chart and a handy-dandy ruler.

Now, all these things help you
explore and investigate, and,

Boy, do I like to investigate a
lot. Now, I think I like to use

My estimation jar the most. Or
maybe the ruler. Hmm. I like

The chart a lot, too, and I
really love my magnifying glass.

Oh, I just can't decide. Now
I've just got to find out--which

One is my favorite? [Echoing]
sid, sweetie, let's get a

Move on. It's time for school.

School.

Yes! All right! I love
school! And I'm bringing you

With me, magnifying glass.

* I love my my mom
uh-huh

My mom is cool
uh-huh

But now it's time
for having fun in school

Yeah! *
* I'm looking for my friends

I'm looking for you
there's gabriela

Watch what I can do
la la whoo!

La la whoo!

Oh, yeah!

Wow
I'm looking for my friends

I'm looking for you
hey, there's gerald

Yeah, check out my moves
I'm a rock star!

Cool!

I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you

Hey, there's may
may I show you how I groove?

La la la la
ha ha ha! Hey!

We're looking for our friends
we're looking for you

Hey, there's sid *
did you hear the one about

The kid who wanted to know
everything about everything?

* That's you!

[Laughter]
we're looking for our friends

And look what we found
we found each other!

Friends! *
Neigh!

Giddy-up, giddy-up.

I'm a horsie! Neigh!

Good horsie.

[Snorts] ha ha ha!

Hi, gabriela.

Neigh, gabriela.

Hey, look what I brought.

Ooh.

A magnifying glass. I love
exploring with those.

Me, too. I'm gonna start
exploring right now.

[Humming]
ooh, I found may.

Ha ha ha! Hi, sid!

Hi. I'm gonna crawl around
and look at all kinds of cool

Things. Oh, there's a horse
named gerald.

Neigh! [Snorts]
ha ha ha!

Hi, kids! It's a special day.

We're having class outside!

Yay!

That's teacher susie.

Oh, isn't it a beautiful day?

Sure is. Delightful.

Oh, I see you've been
exploring with your magnifying

Glass. That's one of my favorite
science tools.

Me, too.

Anyone remember when we used
a magnifying glass to explore

Something really, really little?

Oh! Oh! I do! I do! Um, we
used a magnifying glass to look

At sid's little rolie polies.

I remember that.

We're going to do an
investigation I call the

Magnification observation.

Whoo!

That sounds fun.

Neato.

Go ahead. Each of you take
one.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Ooh.

Now, don't hold it too close.

Try moving it back and forth
like this, ok? Then tell me what

You see.

Hmm. I see gerald's freckles,
and they look really big.

Ha ha ha! Cool.

Ooh, sid, look at this blue
crayon.

Yeah. It looks huge.

I know.

Sid, sid, your rolie
polies--they're moving.

Oh, man! My rolie polies look
so big through my magnifying

Glass.

Gerald! Gerald, you have to
come and see this.

Oh, yeah. Wow, look at that!

Now you can see how these little
guys move. Look at them go.

You're a scientist. You can
try this, too.

Everyone, choose a
magnifying glass and try looking

Through it.

Observe your hands.

What kinds of details can you
see with your magnifying glass?

Try looking at your friends--
their ears, their eyes.

Go ahead and explore the world
around you. Does the magnifying

Glass make things look bigger?

What else do you see?

Ok, draw your observations
in your journals.

What did everything look like
when you used the magnifying

Glass?

Now use your magnifying glass to
look at the rolie polies.

Do they look bigger?

Can you see them better under
the magnifying glass?

The magnifying glass is a great
science tool that can help you

Observe how the rolie polies
move.

So now can you see their legs?

Wow. The magnifying glass really
helps make little things look

Much bigger.

Remember to draw your
observations in your journals.

Think about how the magnifying
glass helps you observe all the

Little rolie polies.

Today you're like a real
scientist using a science

Tool--the magnifying glass.

Way to go, magnifying glass.

Maybe you are my favorite
science tool.

Sid, may I see your
magnifying glass?

Oh, sure.

So, magnifying glass, do you
want to say something to our

Scientists here? Maybe sing a
song?

Yeah!

* I magnify
better believe that's what I do

I make things look bigger
so you can see them better

I bring it all closer to you
come on, look through

My looking glass
an itsy bitsy teeny tiny

Blade of grass
dig that detail, my, oh, my

I magnify
I magnify

You better believe it's
magnifique

You want to see how things
really, really look

Just pick me up and take a peek
I offer you this invitation

For some up-close and personal
observation

You'll be amazed
when you give me a try

I magnify
when it comes to making things

Look bigger
you know I'm in charge

I make something that's really
small

Look mighty, mighty, mighty
mighty, mighty, mighty large

I magnify
I'll show you a butterfly's

Wings
just look through me

And you can see
some of the world's tiniest

Things
I'm here to help

Pick me up and use me
I'm a scientific tool

You ought to choose me
look through my glass

And you'll see why
I magnify

I'm a magnifying glass
have some fun and try it

I take something little
and I magnify it

Dig that detail
my, oh, my

I magnify *
ha ha ha!

Yeah!

Whoo! * I magnify
yeah. I magnify, too. Bam bam

Bam bam!

Here you go, sid.

Oh, thanks.

So does anyone else have a
favorite science tool?

I do, I do. I really like
estimation jars. Remember? We

Learned how to estimate all
kinds of things.

Oh, yeah. My jar had
those bouncing balls.

Ok, scientists. We're going
to do the estimation

Investigation.

Cool!

Oh, boy!

Ok. Before we do an
estimation, we need to observe.

Take a close look at the things
inside your jar. Look at the jar

From above...from below. Now I'm
going to show you a special way

To help you make your best
estimate.

Yay!

All right!

You're scientists. You can
try this, too.

It's the estimation
investigation. Let's estimate

How many balls are in this
estimation jar.

First look at the balls in the
jar really carefully. Look at

Them from the sides, the top,
and the bottom. Now here's a

Special way to help you make
your best estimate.

Open the jar and count out
balls. Hold the balls or just

Make a little pile in front of
you. Take a good look at what a

Group of balls looks like.

Ok, put them back in the jar
with the rest of the balls.

Now try making your best
estimate of how many balls are

In the jar. Think about how many
groups of you might have and

Write down your estimate in your
journal.

Now let's count the balls.

, , , , , , , , , ,
, , , , , , , ,

, , , , , , .

There are balls in the jar.

Now compare that to your
estimate.

You can try estimating how many
things are in other jars, too,

Because now you know a way to
help make your best estimate.

Count out .

Write down your estimate.

Then count how many you really
have. Now you're an estimation

Expert.

I think science tools rule!

Ha ha hah!

Hey, that reminds me of a
science tool I have at home--a

Ruler.

Ooh, ooh. Remember when we
measured our classroom and we

Needed something bigger than a
ruler?

Oh, yeah.

We used you!

Ha ha ha!

I was the gerald ruler.

Boing.

Ha ha ha!

We used gerald to measure the
whole classroom.

Today in the super fab lab,
we're going to figure out

Another way to measure something
big!

Whoa.

Can we measure the whole
classroom?

Sure. But if sid's ruler is
too small and we don't have a

Tape measure, what can we use to
measure the classroom?

Oh, hey, hey. I'm big. Why
don't you use me?

Ha ha ha!

See, ok, um, look. Gerald.

Ok, plus more gerald. Oh, I
almost hit my head. Equals

Geralds, and I bet that this
whole classroom is geralds

Long.

That's a really good
estimate, gerald, and a really

Good way to measure the
classroom.

Really?

Yeah. Sure. You know, it's
actually ok to use something

Besides a ruler to measure.

You mean we could use a shoe
to measure the classroom?

Absolutely, and when you use
something besides a ruler, it's

Called nonstandard measurement.

Yes. Nonstandard measurement.

Very good, gerald.

I think my work here is done.

[Laughter]
so, susie, is it ok to

Measure the classroom with
shoes, flowers, and a bunch of

Geralds?

Well, there are some rules
when you use nonstandard

Measurement. You can only
measure with one kind of item at

A time.

Oh, so you could measure with
shoes or flowers or gerald.

You got it. As long as
they're the same size.

Oh, just like all the inches
are the same size on a ruler.

Exactly, gabriela, and
there's one more rule. You can't

Leave any spaces between
whatever you're using to

Measure, just like these blocks.

But, hey, I could be just
like those wooden blocks.

Measure with me. Measure with
me, ok? I'll be...

Ok, let's do it!

Yay!

You're scientists. You can
try this, too.

Ok, let's measure the
classroom using nonstandard

Measurement. That means instead
of a ruler, we'll use something

Else. In this case, we can use
our body.

Lie down on the ground, and
we'll mark your spot with a

Block so you know where to lie
down again.

This way, we won't leave any
spaces.

Now go for it and measure the
whole classroom. Keep lying down

And marking your spot until you
reach the other side of the

Room.

You're almost there.

Keep measuring.

Hey, it looks like there's room
for another half a body.

Let's count our bodies and
measure the room.

, , , / .

You can also make your own paper
body ruler.

Just lie down and have your
friends trace your body on

Paper.

Then an adult can cut out the
shape, and you're ready to

Measure the classroom.

Just like before, make sure you
don't leave any spaces.

Ok. That's paper body ruler,
paper body rulers,

Paper body rulers,
paper body rulers.

And there's room for one more
half a paper body ruler.

Wow. We talked about so many
science tools today.

Ooh. Magnifying glasses,
estimation jars...

Oh, yeah, and don't forget
rulers.

I think we need a science
tool to help us remember all

These science tools.

Ha ha ha!

Oh, I know. There is one.

It's called a chart.

Oh, yeah. We made a chart of
our snacks.

Uh-huh. Charts help you to
remember things, and you can

Write stuff down in little
boxes. Charts are wonderful.

You know what, may? I like
charts, too. I really like

Charts. Hey, who wants to hear
me sing about how much I like

Charts?

We do! Ha ha ha!

* I like checking out charts
'cause charts rule

A chart is a handy dandy
scientific tool

It gives you information
you can see with your eyes

A chart lets you visualize
you get the picture

So do I
checking out charts

May I please draw your
attention

To this weather chart
I tell you this chart is a work

Of art
I see clouds on friday

And rain on monday
and look, there's gonna be sun

On sunday
I like checking out charts

'Cause charts rule
a chart is a handy dandy

Scientific tool
it gives you information

You can see with your eyes
a chart that you visualize

You get the picture
so do I

Checking charts
how many kids like a dog or a

Cat?

Who wears a hoodie and who wears
a hat?

Making a chart of what people
eat

Some charts look like a pie
and you know that's sweet

I like checking out charts
'cause charts rule

A chart is a handy dandy
scientific tool

It gives you information
you can see with your eyes

A chart that you visualize
you get the picture

So do I *
yeah!

All right, my science tool
experts. Go play!

Yay!

I'm gonna do some charting.

Let's play pretend. I'm the
mommy, and you are my son.

Whoa. Why am I the kid?

Because I'm already wearing
the mommy hat.

Well, she's got me there.

Hey, mommy, I want a new turbo
robot megaship. What do you say?

Come on, come on, come on.

Well, son, if you want a new
toy, then you're going to have

To earn it.

Oh. What do I have to do?

I'll mark a box on this chart
only if you are polite.

Oh, really? Hmm. Watch this.

Um, mommy, will you please,
please, please, puleeze put a

Check in the boxes?

No. Oh, wait. I guess you
were polite. Please, please,

Please, please.

Oh, thank you, thank you,
thank you, thank you, thank you,

Thank you, and thank you.

[Sigh] this is not the way it
is supposed to work.

Oh, looky there. I see I only
need one more box. Mommy, I

Really like your chart.

Why, thank you.

You're welcome. Say, that was
pretty polite of me, so you got

To check off the last box now.

Ha! Which means I get the turbo
robot megaship!

* Yeah, boo boo doo doo doo
I get the megaship

'Cause I was so polite, uh!

I get the megaship
because I was so polite *

Hey, you know what?

I think charts are cool after
all. Hey, mom. Mommy, are you

Getting your purse? Where's my
robot megaship?

Now it's time for...

Good laughternoon! Ha ha ha!

Hey, gabriela.

Yes?

What do you call a chart
about trains?

I don't know. What?

A choo choo chart. Woo woo!

Have a chart train.

Ha ha ha!

How does a chart sneeze?

Um, can charts sneeze?

Well, it's good laughternoon,
so it's ok to tell silly jokes.

Oh, yeah. What does a chart
say when it sneezes?

Uh, uh, uh-chart!

Ha ha ha!

I'm back! Chart express
coming through!

What do you get when you make
a chart about charts?

I don't know. What?

Too many charts.

Ha ha ha!

All aboard the choo choo
chart train. Woo woo!

Ha ha ha!

Now, that's funny.

[Laughter]
[all talking at once]

My favorite part of today was
looking at our journals. I

Really like looking at my
journal pages just to remember

Our super fab lab
investigations.

Yeah.

Oh, is that silly?

Oh, that's not silly at all,
gabriela. In fact, it's very

Scientific. Journals are one of
the most important science tools

We have.

Wow.

Yeah. I forgot journals are
science tools, too. Hey, you

Know what? I don't think I have
a favorite science tool. I like

Them all.

Ha ha ha!

Me, too. Science tools rock.

Well, I'm very proud of all
of you. You are now science tool

Experts.

Yeah!

Ok, scientists, it's time to
go home. Follow me.

Yeah!

I'm going home.

You know, I thought the
magnifying glass was my favorite

Science tool, but I also like my
chart and my estimation jar and

My ruler. Hmm. Wow. There are so
many.

Sid, it's time to get ready
for bed, buddy. I'm just gonna

Put mr. Zeke here down, and
I'll be right back to tuck you

In. Say good night, zeke.

[Baby talk]
same to you, zekey.

So trying to remember all the
science tools got me thinking

About making the best, most
awesome, super duper science

Tool chart ever! Ok, I've got
it. Here's my super duper ooper

Shmooper big idea. I want to
make a chart of the whole world.

I want the chart to show how
many people live in my house,

How many houses there are on my
block, how many people live in

My city, how many people live in
the world, how many people like

Bananas, how many animals
live on the planet,

How many animals on
the planet like bananas, and

Then I'll invite everybody in
the whole world to my house to

Look at the charts! Hmm. I
wonder how I'll feed them all.

And that's my super duper ooper
shmooper big idea. Ha ha ha!

[Applause]
thank you, thank you, and hooray

For science tools. Hey, I just
made up a new song about science

Tools. Here it is.

* Oh, I like every science tool
I think they are really cool

Oh, yeah, they really rule
bah wah wah *

That's right. I am singing about
science because I am sid...

[Clap]
the science kid [echoing].

And remember, keep asking lots
and lots of questions. See you

Later, scientists.

Ha ha ha! Watcha! Splam!

* Oh, I love science tools
wow!

Oh, hi. We're just checking
out our web site. You can

Explore with us.

Yeah!

That's a great idea. Come
join us. Visit pbskids.org.

There's a lot of great
information for grownups, too.

I think we look
pretty good on the computer.

Yeah.

Investigate, explore,
discover! Wow.

Hey, I know how to
investigate,

Explore, and discover, and I bet
you do, too.

Investigate--that's when you
want to find stuff out.

Explore--that's when you look at
things in the world around you.

Discover--that's when you
investigate and explore and you

Find out something new.

Hey, scientists, there's lots
more amazing science coming your

Way. My friends and I will learn
how to use science tools,

Investigate how things change,
discover our senses, and

Explore how to keep our bodies
healthy. So come join me, sid

The science kid.
