Hey, is this thing on?

* Hey, sid, what do you say?

What you want to learn today? *
* I wanna know why

Things happen and how
and I wanna know

Everything now *
oh, yeah!

* How does this thing work?

Why does that stuff change?

How does that do
what it just did? *

Hmm.

* What's up with the sky?

You think I could fly?

The world is spinning
and I wanna know why

I got a lot of questions
and big ideas

I'm sid the science kid *
[captioning made possible by

The jim henson company
and friends of nci]

Psst.

Hey, hey, I'm over here.

Hi. I'm sid.

I'm trying to very still to
practice for the greatest idea

I've ever had in my entire life,
and it's all about "firedog

Brigade."

What--what?

You don't know "firedog
brigade"?

It's only the best tv show ever.

It's about firedogs who seem
like regular dogs until the

Brigade bell goes off!

[Imitates bell]
and then they zip down their

Fire pole into their fire truck
and zoom to the city to fight

Crimes and save the day!

Um, oh, right.

I was trying to keep still.

Huh. Ahem.

So my brilliant idea is I'm
going to bring a tv in my room

And watch "firedog brigade" all
weekend long.

I'm going to sit in front of the
tv, make a pillow fort, have my

Mom bring me food, and just sit
here and watch.

Hmm.

Mom and dad probably won't love
this just-watch-tv idea,

But why?

I just got to know, what's the
big idea with tv?

Why can't I watch it all...

[Echoes]
weekend?

Sid, breakfast time!

Oh, good.

I'm so hungry.

Tv, tv, tv, tv!

Wa-chicka-blam!

Oh, boy!

Breakfast time!

Whoo!

Hey, zeke and mom.

Hi, sid.

Hi, dad.

Hey, I have the best idea in the
world.

I'm going to bring a tv in a my
room and sit in my bed and watch

"Firedog brigade" all weekend
long!

Excuse me? All weekend long?

Yeah. Great idea, huh?

Sid, you cannot watch tv all
weekend long.

What?

No, all that tv at once
wouldn't be good for you.

Your body would get really
tired.

Tired?

But I wouldn't be moving.

How could I get tired?

Because your body needs
to move.

You need to exercise your
muscles: like this!

Ah, ha-ha.

Oh, yeah, it feels good.

Your dad's right, sid.

Now, if you didn't move at all
and just watched tv, your body

Would turn to mush.

Ah, oh, I love exercising.

[Mort grunts]
my mom and dad are funny.

Yeah.

[Babbles]
hmm.

Well, there's got to be a way to
watch "firedog brigade" all

Weekend long.

Ooh, I know.

I'll investigate at school.

Maybe my friends can help me.

Ah. Whew. Great idea.

Yeah.

But first, exercise your
mouth muscles and eat some

Breakfast.

Oh, ok.

Here you go.

Thanks.

Hmm.

* I love my mom
* uh-huh

* My mom is cool
* uh-huh

* But now it's time
for having fun at school *

Yeah!

[Laughs]
[music plays]

* I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you

There's gabriela *
* watch what I can do

Ha-ha. Yeah!

Ready, set, go!

Wow!

* I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you

Hey, there's gerald *
* yeah, check out my moves

[Rock 'n' roll plays]
I'm a rock star!

Yeah, on top!

Cool!

* I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you

Hey, there's may *
* may I show you

How I grove? *
Uh-huh.

[Dance music plays]
whee!

Groovy!

* We're looking
for our friends

We're looking for you
hey, there's sid *

Did you hear the one about
the kid who wanted to know

Everything about everything?

* That's you
ha! You got me!

[Laughter]
* da-da-da-da-da

* We're looking
for our friends

And look what we found
we found each other

Friends *
[laughter]

And now it's time for
the sid survey.

Hello.

I am sid, roving reporter with
today's survey.

The question: do you know anyone
who exercises?

Maybe you know someone who
exercises, too.

Let's go get some answers.

Hi, sid.

Oh, hi, gerald.

Do you know anyone who
exercises?

Oh, yeah.

My dad and my dog chester.

They both exercise together.

They run around this big field,
but my dog is a lot faster than

My dad!

Whoa!

I'll bet he is.

"Come back, chester!"
Thanks, gerald.

Hmm.

Ooh, hello there, may.

Hello.

Do you anyone who exercises?

Yes, I do.

My aunt karen does tai chi.

It looks like this.

Wow. Huh.

That looks like "slow" much fun.

[Laughs]
thanks, may.

You're welcome.

Ooh, gabriela, do you know
someone who exercises?

Uh, oh, yeah.

My brother plays soccer all the
time, and I play with him, too.

Cool.

Boom!

Goal!

Thanks, gabriela.

You're welcome!

Hmm.

And now the results of my
survey.

Gerald says his dad and dog
run together for exercise.

May's aunt does tai chi.

And gabriela plays soccer with
her brother.

Hmm.

Maybe you thought of someone who
exercises, too.

Well, there you have it.

I am sid, roving reporter, and
almost an exercise expert.

Everybody, rug time!

Ooh, that's teacher susie.

* It's rug time
come on in

Rug time
take a seat

Rug time *
* we're ready

* Everybody, move your feet
rug time *

* Teacher susie
* good times on the way

Rug time
come on in

We've got a lot to learn today *
hello, everyone.

Hello.

Oh, yes, here we are.

Ding.

[Music ends]
going down.

[Laughs]
oh, gerald's going on an

Elevator.

Ah, this must be my floor.

[Laughter]
I think you ended up in the

Basement.

Yeah. That's true.

So who has something they
want to talk about?

Oh, well, in the playground
we were talking about exercise.

Oh, a very good topic.

Yeah, I'd like to know why
we have to exercise.

See, I have a plan for this
weekend.

I'm going to sit in front of the
tv and not move until I've

Watched every episode of
"firedog brigade."

That sounds like the best
weekend ever.

[Laughs]
I thought so, too, except my mom

And dad told me they won't let
me watch tv all weekend.

They said it's not good for
my body.

Your parents are right.

If you don't exercise, your body
won't stay healthy and strong.

Oh, is exercise good for
your whole body?

Even your feet?

Yep.

And your arms?

Yep.

And it's even good for your
brain.

Exercising helps you think
better, too.

Hey, you're all asking great
questions, and I think it's time

To investigate exercise.

How about a special outside
super fab lab on the playground?

Yeah!

Well, grab your journals
and let's go!

We're going outside!

[Chuckles]
[laughter]

It's the super fab lab...

Outside!

Investigate, explore, discover!

Wow!

There's no right or wrong way
to exercise.

The important thing is to just
move your body and have fun.

So all you have to do is move
around a little bit and that's

Exercise?

Good question, gerald.

You'll know you're moving around
enough when you can feel your

Heart b*ating fast.

Ooh. Um, ok.

Nope. Can't feel anything.

Oh, your heart is b*ating,
but it's b*ating really slowly.

After we exercise, we'll all try
feeling our hearts again to see

If they're b*ating faster.

Ok?

Everyone, think of your favorite
way to move your body, and let's

Show each other.

, , , Go!

[Disco plays]
ok.

* La-la-la-la
I like playing soccer.

Boom!

I like pretending to be a
robot making pancakes.

* Robot, robot
I'm a robot making pancakes

Do I flip the pancake now?

Hoo-hoo-hoo *
I like gardening with my

Grandpa.

I'm planting the seed, I'm
watering the seed, and now I'm

A sunflower!

That's nice, may.

I like tap dancing, and I'm
singing.

* La-la-la-la-la-la
[gerald scats]

Go, scientists, go!

You're all exercising and
building really strong muscles!

Ok.

Ok, scientists.

Everyone, put your hand over
your heart, and observe if it's

b*ating the same or faster than
before.

My heart is b*ating really
fast!

Yeah, I'm breathing really
fast.

You're a scientist.

You can try this, too.

Whew!

In this exercise
investigation, we're going to

Observe how our bodies feel
before and after we move our

Bodies. First, feel your heart
b*at before you move around.

Can you feel it b*ating slowly?

You can also listen to your
heart b*ating slowly with a

Stethoscope.

Now show the class your favorite
way to move your body, then feel

Your heart again.

Hey, it's b*ating faster.

Someone else can try moving
around.

Wow. Nice dancing.

Now feel your heart.

Can you feel it b*ating faster?

What other ways can you move
your body?

Oh, great rolling.

Now your heart is b*ating really
fast.

Let's take a break.

When you move around a lot, it's
important to drink lots of

Water.

And now everyone can move their
bodies together.

Wow. Look at you go.

Everyone's heart is b*ating
faster.

It's time to draw some
observations in your journals.

Think about the different ways
you moved your body.

You can also think about how
your body felt before and after

You moved around.

Exercising is a great way to
keep your body healthy.

You all were doing some
very creative exercises.

I can't wait to see what kinds
of observations you made.

May, can we look at your
journal?

Um, ok.

I drew me while I'm in my
grandpa's garden.

I'm trying to pick every single
weed.

It's hard work, but it's fun.

Um, susie?

Hmm?

Is gardening good exercise?

Oh, it's great exercise, may.

And when you do something you
like to do, it's even better.

Sid, how about your journal?

Oh, sure.

Well, when I was pretending to
be a robot, my heart was b*ating

Fast and really hard.

It was going,
"boom-boom-boom-boom."

Mm-hmm.

Your heart was b*ating fast
because it was working hard to

Pump blood all around your whole
body.

Sid, you really got your body
moving.

Sure did.

All of you really got your
bodies moving!

So let's keep it moving and go
play with all your new ideas!

Yay!

Ok.

It's time for...

Good laughternoon!

[Laughter]
hey, sid?

Yes, may?

What kind of exercise
do cows like best?

Hmm. I don't know.

What kind of exercise
do cows like best?

Moo-ving their bodies.

[Laughter]
hey, gerald?

Yes?

How do porcupines play
leapfrog?

I don't know. How?

Very carefully.

[Laughter]
um, may?

Yes?

What do you call a chicken
who's dancing on top of a snowy

Mountain?

I don't know. What?

Well, you call him on the
phone, and you say, "hey,

Chicken, what are you doing on
top of that snowy mountain?

Because chickens--they usually
live on farms, but you're on a

Snowy mountain.

Oh, chicken, you're so silly.

Hey, get back on that farm."

Yeah. Silly chicken.

[Laughter]
now, that's funny.

[Laugh track]
[imitates motor]

* La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
that's very cool.

Ooh, oh, hey, hey.

Let's play pretend.

I know.

Let's play "firedog brigade"!

Ooh, yeah!

I love "firedog brigade"!

Yeah, me, too.

"Twirling at the speed of
light, in a flash I'm out of

Sight!

I am rocky!

Woof-woof-woof-woof-woof-woof!"
Um, hey, why can't I be

Rocky?

I really like rocky.

Well, because she's a girl
and the leader of the brigade.

Oh. Yeah.

And--and you can be rocky,
too, if you want.

Oh, really?

Yeah.

Oh, thanks! Woof-woof!

I'm striker.

"Teeth and claws and awesome
kicks, I stop the bad guy with

My tricks!

Grr-woof-woof-woof-woof!"
Hey, hey, I want to be

Mighty!

"Woof-woof-woof-woof-woof!"
Um, I don't speak, I just bark.

[Laughter]
[barking]

Whoa!

I'm ok!

Yay!

Come on, firedogs!

I see trouble at the swings.

Let's run over there.

Oh, yeah, but let's do it
like they do at the beginning of

The show: in slow motion.

Ok.

Ok.

Woof!

[Howling]
woof! Woof!

Ok, this way! Over here!

I see a bad guy! Woof-woof!

I'm going to get you!

Look at us running around and
exercising!

Oh, I mean, "woof-woof-woof."

Yeah! Woof-woof!

Yeah, we are the firedog
brigade.

Let's do the special firedog
brigade cheer.

[Howling]
ok, this way!

Ok!

[Gerald howls]
come on, mighty gerald!

What? Oh, yeah.

Woof-woof!

And now...

It's time...

For susie...

To sing!

Go, susie!

Oh, why, thank you!

Oh, you know, all this talk
about exercise reminds me of a

Song that can really get your
bodies moving.

Anyone ready to boogie?

We are!

[Disco plays]
oh, cool!

Look at teacher susie!

Whoo!

Wow!

Come on, everybody!

* Oh, work!
* Work your body, everybody

Work your body like you should
everybody, work your body

Make your body feel real good
your brain loves

The activity
of when your body hustles

Your blood provides the oxygen
to build up all your muscles

So giddy up and go
it gets your heart a-pumpin'

It's time to energize yourself
come on, let's get to jumpin' *

* Oh, work!
* Work your body, everybody

Work your body like you should
everybody, work your body

Make your body feel real good
work your body, everybody

You'll feel better when you do
when you work your body

Then your body's
gonna work for you

Every day it's easier
to work a little harder

More blood is flowing
to your brain

And so you're thinking smarter
get your feet

Up off the ground
and start some groovin' movement

Now turn it up
and shake it out

And you'll see an improvement
but when you sit around

Everything starts slowing down
your energy starts to shrink

And it gets harder to think
so get yourself up and... *

* Oh, work!
* Work your body, everybody

Work your body like you should
everybody, work your body

Make your body feel real good
work your body, everybody

You'll feel better when you do
when you work your body

Then your body's
gonna work for you *

[Disco call]
whoo *

I'm moving!

I'm grooving!

I'm moving and grooving!

And you know what?

I like the way my body feels
after I've been exercising.

[Music ends]
yeah!

Me, too, sid.

Exercising gives you lots of
energy!

Yeah!

[Susie laughs]
ok, my healthy scientists, it's

Time to go home.

Hey, let's move really fast.

Come on, let's move our bodies
out of here!

Let's go!

Ok, let's go!

Whoo!

* I'm movin' and groovin'
now, where's my sid?

Right here, grandma!

Oh. Hmm.

Oh!

Now, okey-doke, let's roll.

Let's roll!

[Disco plays]
* ooh-ooh

Whoo-hoo! Yeah!

* Backseat driving
with grandma, yeah

Hoo-hoo-hoo *
hey, grandma, we learned all

About exercise today.

Ooh, I know all about
exercise.

When I was young, I loved
to dance.

When your father was little,
we loved to go roller skating.

When your father was older, I
liked doing aerobics, a kind of

High-energy dance.

A few years later, I felt the
burn with martial arts, punching

And kicking to music.

Today I'm all about making my
body stronger with gentle

Exercises for all my muscles,
like yoga and pilates.

Wow.

I'm going to exercise my whole
life so I can be just like you.

Oh, good for you.

[Laughs]
I have the coolest grandma

In the whole world!

* I learned something cool
something cool today

I know it upside down
and inside out

I know learned all about *
[laughs]

* Exercise
scientist in the house!

[Applause]
thank you.

Peekaboo!

Peekaboo.

Boo!

Hey, mom, dad?

I have the best idea in the
whole world.

Does it involve watching tv
all weekend?

No way.

No, today we learned how
exercise is good for our bodies.

It gives us so much energy and
helps our heart and our arms and

Even our brains.

Wow, sid.

You learned a lot today.

So what's this great idea?

Well, instead of watching
"firedog brigade," our whole

Family can play "firedog
brigade."

Oh, that's a great idea.

I'll be striker.

"Aha! Woof-woof-woof-woof!"
I'll be mighty!

"Woof-woof-woof-woof-woof!

Whoa! Oh, I'm ok!"
Mort, your turn.

All right, I'm on it.

"Grr!

I am daddy dog!

Grr!"
Uh-oh. Daddy dog has fleas!

Oh, just kidding.

Ok, and I'll be rocky.

"Awoo!" Wait a minute.

Hey, zeke, do you want to be
a doggy, too?

Woof-woof.

Woof-woof!

Aw.

That's great.

Ok, everyone, it's time to do
the firedog brigade cheer!

[Howling]
[zeke howls]

Hey, let's get some bad guys!

Yeah, and put out some fires!

[Barking]
[howling]

Whew! What a day.

I learned that exercise is good
for your whole body.

But sitting in front of the tv
all day?

Not good for your body.

But I still like watching my
favorite tv show, so I thought

Maybe I can move and watch tv
at the same time.

Hmm. Ok.

I've got it!

Here's my
super-duper-uper-schmuper

Big idea!

I'm going to invent
keep-moving tv.

It's a television that only
works when you exercise your

Body.

You can touch your toes:
little piggy, little piggy,

Little piggies.

Whew!

Or you can do jumping jacks:
, , .

Whew. I like jumping jacks.

Or you can dance like an octopus
sprayed with tickle powder!

[Laughs]
hey, quit it! Whoo-hoo!

You can basically exercise
however you want.

That's right.

All you have to do is move, and
your television will work!

And that's my
super-duper-uper-schmuper

Big idea!

[Applause]
wow.

All this exercising today
made me a little...

[Yawns]
sleepy.

Oh, watch--i'm ready for bed.

Then in the morning, I'm going
to get up and exercise some

More.

And then I'll explore lots of
new things because I am sid,

The...

[Echoes]
science kid.

And remember, keep asking lots
and lots of questions.

See you later, scientists.

Ahh.

Hey, that's us!

Oh, hi.

We're just checking out
our web site.

You can explore with us.

Oh, that's a great idea!

Come join us.

Visit pbskids.org. There's a
lot of great information for

Grownups, too.

I think we look pretty good
in the computer.

Yeah.

Investigate, explore,
discover!

Wow!

Hey, I know how to
investigate, explore, and

Discover, and I bet you do, too.

Investigate: that's when you
want to find stuff out.

Explore: that's when you look at
things in the world around you.

Discover: that's when you
investigate and explore, and you

Find out something new.

Be sure to check out
another episode full of

Amazing science.

My friends and I will learn
how to use science tools,

Investigate how things change,
discover our senses, and explore

How to keep our bodies healthy.

See you next time on "sid the
science kid."
