It's me, sid. I want to know
why the wheels on my favite

Toy truck won't work,
so my friends and I are going

To investigate how to use
simple machines. Come explore

With me. "Sid the science kid,"

]] Oh, this wheel's just...

It won't fit. I don't get it.

Hmm. Oh, hi! I'm sid. Ha ha.

And, um, I'm having some truck
troubles. ♪ Duh-duh-duh ♪

Ha ha ha. Ah, yeah. Can you
believe it? This wheel just came

Right off. Has that ever
happened to you? Yeah. Wheels

Are tricky. One minute they're
on and then they fall right off.

And it's hard to play with
a truck when it's missing

A wheel. Hmm. Maybe I can fix
it with some--ooh! Tape! Yeah.

That'll work. Ok. Let me just
put a piece right on there

Like that, and then cross that
like so and...

Tada!

Now the wheel's back on the
truck, and it should work like

New. Let's test it out.

Yeah.

[Makes engine noises]
this wheel. I can't get it

To work. Well, now I just got to
know: how do wheels work?

[Echoing] work...

]] Sid, breakfast time.

]] Oh, good. At least
something's going right

This morning. I'm coming, mom.

Breakfast time!

]] Good morning, sid.

]] Hey, mom. Hi, zeke.

]] [Babbling and cooing]
]] um, so, I have a problem.

A wheel problem.

]] Well, like father, like son.

You both have wheel problems.

]] [Dad grunts] yeah. That's
right. I'm trying to attach

This wheel back to big red.

]] [Gasps] oh. That's big red.

Oh, no. I love big red.

It's the greatest wagon ever!

]] Yeah, but this wheel keeps
falling off.

]] Hmm. Well, don't use tape.

I tried it, and now the wheel
won't go around.

]] You're right about that, sid.

Wheels need to be able to round.

]] Yep.

]] Hmm. How can I show you how
this works?

Oh! I got an idea. Come here,
sid.

]] Ok.

]] I'm gonna show you how wheels
work on the computer.

]] [Zeke makes chewing noises]
]] now, let's see. Ok. Here's

A truck with some big wheels.

And look, on this truck, the
wheels are connected to this

Metal bar, and that's called
an axle.

]] An axle.

]] Right. The axle turns round,
and that's what makes the

Wheels turn round and round.

]] Oh. So, the wheel on my truck
can't move because I taped it

And it needs to be able to spin
on the axle, like this one.

]] Right.

]] Wow, sid. You figured out
how your truck's wheels work.

]] Hey, I did! Well, I know
how they work, but now I'm

Thinking what else can wheels
do?

]] Well, that sounds like a
perfect question to investigate

At school, sid.

]] Hey, what kinds of wheels
have you seen?

]] Oh, uh, I've seen a big,
giant wheel--a ferris wheel.

My brother and I rode on it,
and it took us way up high.

and around. It was really fun.

]] Ooh. Gerald!

]] Yeah, sid!

]] What kinds of wheels have

]] I've seen the kinds of wheels
on a tricycle. Tada!

Scooter.

]] Yeah. And my tricycle.

wheels.

And ferris wheels are one, big
wheel.

examples of wheels.

Fell off my truck. Now it
won't go around at all.

]] Well, you know, I think we
need a closer look at wheels.

So, scientists, if we want to
investigate simple machines,

investigation.

]] Your job is to investigate
the easiest way to move this box

]] Well, we could pick it up

Could make pots and bowls.

Yep. Long ago, they'd put a lump

use their hands to shape the

what? People still use

A potter's wheel today,
including me. Ha ha ha!

I love to make clay pots
on the potter's wheel.

I make little pots, medium pots,
and great big pots. [Laughs]

]] And I'll be the backseat

on the wagon with wheels,

And she zoomed across the floor!

anything! Ok. I've got it.

super-dooper-ooper-schmooper

Big idea! My new invention is
called the

Super-change-o-wheels. They can
be really small. Need to get

Milk across the kitchen table?

Well, just attach
super-change-o-wheels and roll

The milk carton to mom.

And the super-change-o-wheels
can be really big. Want to have

Breakfast in bed but not
in your bedroom? Well, attach

Super-change-o-wheels to your
bed so you can drive right into

The kitchen.

Super-change-o-wheels can also
grow really, really big.

Say your family wants to see
grandma at her house, but you

Don't want to leave your toys
behind. Well, just attach

Super huge,
super-change-o-wheels to your

House and soon you'll be rolling
the whole house right to

Grandma's place. Heh heh.
