Ignatz on your skateboard and
Rolling him to a stop is a great
Way to observe what inertia is.
Well, yeah, but wait. There'’s
No ignatz here, so what are we
Going to use?
Since ignatz isn'’t here,
We'’ll use steggy the stegosaurus
From our classroom. Ok, let'’s
Put steggy on the skateboard and
Give it a push toward that step.
Ok.
Oh! You mean like ignatz on
The skateboard.
Right. Then I want everyone
To observe what happens to our
Stegosaurus when the skateboard
Hits the step.
Oh! Hey, susie, there'’s a
Wagon, too. What are we putting
In there, a bigger dinosaur?
Ha ha!
Actually, each of you will
Have a chance to ride in the
Wagon while I pull it.
All right!
Then I'’ll stop the wagon and
You can observe what happens to
Your body when the wagon stops.
Ooh! We'’ll be like the
Stegosaurus.
That'’s right, gabriela. Ok,
Scientists, let'’s start
Investigating. Who wants to be
The first to push the
Skateboard?
[All shout at once]

You can try this, too.
Let'’s investigate inertia.
First, put a wooden block on a
Skateboard. Then push the
Skateboard slowly toward the
Mat. The skateboard rolled until
Something stopped it. That'’s
Inertia, but nothing stopped the
Block on top, so it kept moving
Forward. Try it again, and this
Time push the skateboard really
Hard. Look at that! The faster
The skateboard is moving, the
Farther the block flies forward.
Let'’s see what happens when we
Use this turtle stuffed animal.
The skateboard stopped, but the
Turtle kept moving forward.
Try it with this toy pig. The
Skateboard rolled until it hit
The mat and stopped. That'’s
Inertia, but nothing stopped the
Pig; it kept moving forward.
Now you'’re going to take a ride
In a wagon so you can feel
Inertia. A grownup will pull you
And then stop the wagon. Even
Though the wagon is stopping,
Nothing is stopping you. Did you
Feel your body move forward
A little? That'’s inertia.
Now draw some pictures in your
Journal so you can remember how
We did our investigation today.
First, we put the wooden block
On the skateboard, and when we
Rolled it to a stop, the block
Kept moving forward. Then we
Used a turtle stuffed animal,
And then we used a small toy
Pig.
Then you went on the wagon, and
When it stopped, you moved
Forward. Great job investigating

That just went across your lap.

Safe as can be when we drive.

You wear everywhere you go, and

Pops out whenever you need it,
Like, say, you'’re riding your
Tricycle along the path and a
Big elephant steps in your way.
[Elephant trumpets]
Don'’t worry. The everywhere belt
Comes popping out and wraps
Around you, and you stop. And if
You'’re on a scooter, and a
Family of lions walks in front
Of you...
[Meek roar]
Don'’t worry. Your handy
Everywhere belt will wrap around
You, and you'’ll stop safely.
Or say you'’re surfing in the
Ocean and a whale jumps out of
The water.
