Ah!

Here it comes.

Wow!

Ok, scientists, today we'’re

Going to do sid'’s skateboard

Inertia investigation.

Wow! You named an

Investigation after me and my

Skateboard.

I sure did because putting

Ignatz on your skateboard and

Rolling him to a stop is a great

Way to observe what inertia is.

Well, yeah, but wait. There'’s

No ignatz here, so what are we

Going to use?

Since ignatz isn'’t here,

We'’ll use steggy the stegosaurus

From our classroom. Ok, let'’s

Put steggy on the skateboard and

Give it a push toward that step.

Ok.

Oh! You mean like ignatz on

The skateboard.

Right. Then I want everyone

To observe what happens to our

Stegosaurus when the skateboard

Hits the step.

Oh! Hey, susie, there'’s a

Wagon, too. What are we putting

In there, a bigger dinosaur?

Ha ha!

Actually, each of you will

Have a chance to ride in the

Wagon while I pull it.

All right!

Then I'’ll stop the wagon and

You can observe what happens to

Your body when the wagon stops.

Ooh! We'’ll be like the

Stegosaurus.

That'’s right, gabriela. Ok,

Scientists, let'’s start

Investigating. Who wants to be

The first to push the

Skateboard?

[All shout at once]

Hey, you'’re a scientist.

You can try this, too.

Let'’s investigate inertia.

First, put a wooden block on a

Skateboard. Then push the

Skateboard slowly toward the

Mat. The skateboard rolled until

Something stopped it. That'’s

Inertia, but nothing stopped the

Block on top, so it kept moving

Forward. Try it again, and this

Time push the skateboard really

Hard. Look at that! The faster

The skateboard is moving, the

Farther the block flies forward.

Let'’s see what happens when we

Use this turtle stuffed animal.

The skateboard stopped, but the

Turtle kept moving forward.

Try it with this toy pig. The

Skateboard rolled until it hit

The mat and stopped. That'’s

Inertia, but nothing stopped the

Pig; it kept moving forward.

Now you'’re going to take a ride

In a wagon so you can feel

Inertia. A grownup will pull you

And then stop the wagon. Even

Though the wagon is stopping,

Nothing is stopping you. Did you

Feel your body move forward

A little? That'’s inertia.

Now draw some pictures in your

Journal so you can remember how

We did our investigation today.

First, we put the wooden block

On the skateboard, and when we

Rolled it to a stop, the block

Kept moving forward. Then we

Used a turtle stuffed animal,

And then we used a small toy

Pig.

Then you went on the wagon, and

When it stopped, you moved
