Me--sid.

I want to know what happens to

All the dirty water when it goes

Down the drain, so my friends

And I are going to visit a

Science center and discover how

Water all over the earth is

Connected.

There'’s a lot of water and

Toothpaste going down that

Drain, but where does it go?

Does the dirty, toothpastey

Water just goes down under the

Bathroom floor?

Eh, I guess that'’s it.

Or maybe it goes under the house

And into the ground.

Yeah. Or maybe this toothpaste

Water goes to another place,

Like the kitchen sink.

Yeah. That'’s probably how it

Works.

Hmm. Oh, hey, wait. No.

Does that mean that my family

Will be drinking the same dirty,

Icky bathroom sink water maybe

Today?

Ew. Ech!

Ok. Now I just got to know.

Where does the water in the sink

Go?

[Echoing]

Sid! Breakfast time.

Ooh, breakfast time.

Coming, mom. Breakfast time!

Good morning, mom. Hi, zekey.

Hi, sid.

Ah. Oh, hi, dad.

Oh, whoa, dad, that water, don'’t

Use it.

[Robotic voice] danger, danger.

Step away from the sink.

I repeat, step away from the

Sink.

Sid, I'’m about to get a glass

Of the best drink in the whole

World--nice, refreshing water.

[Normal voice] oh, yeah, but

The problem is, dad, the water

You were going to drink is the

Same dirty toothpaste water from

When I brushed my teeth.

Oh, actually, sid, every time

Any of us turn on a faucet in

The bathroom or in the kitchen

Or in the bathtub, it'’s all

Clean water.

What? Really?

Yep.

But where does all the clean

Water come from?

Ah, good question, sid.

The clean water comes from the

Pipes.

Huh?

Here. Take a look at this.

Blammo.

Oh, wow, look.

There are pipes down here.

Uh-huh. There are pipes

Underneath all houses that bring

Water right up into the faucets

In our sinks and bathtubs.

Now, these pipes right here

Bring the clean water in, and

This one drains out the dirty,

Old water.

The dirty water goes down the

Pipe, and that brings it to a

Special place to get cleaned.

Wow, but now I'’m wondering,

Where does all the water come

From in the beginning?

I must investigate more at

School.

And speaking of school, we

Don'’t want to be late, so

Breakfast time.

Oh, right, mom. Um...

[Robotic voice] beep.

Dad, you may now drink the

Water.

Bloop bloop.

Oh, and may I please have my own

Glass of clean, fresh water?

Bloop bloop blee blop.

[Robotic voice] yes.

One glass of fresh, clean water

From the sink, coming right

Up, son.

Boop.

[Normal voice] ♪ I love my mom

Turn on the faucet?

Well, water is from the

Ocean.

You see, it has so much water in

It, so that'’s where water

Is from.

Ok. On to expert may.

Where do you think water comes

From?

Oh, well, one time, my family

Had a picnic near a park near a

Lake, and there was a lot of

Water in the lake, so I think

That water comes from the lakes.

Lakes. I like it.

The sky.

That'’s where rain comes from.

I know because my brother and I

Like to catch rain in cups.

Place to investigate water.

Here in the exploration room,

Help you discover where our

Water comes from, so go explore.

At that picture.

Oh, hey, may, let'’s look at

The big picture over there.

Come on.

Ok.

Oh, look.

There'’s rain falling.

Oh, yeah, and it'’s snowing on

That mountain.

Hmm, I guess that means that

Water comes from rain and snow.

Yeah, ooh, let'’s go tell

Hey, guys, guys, we looked at

We think water comes from rain

And snow.

Oh, well, yeah, but we found

Out that water comes from lakes

And rivers and oceans.

Yeah, and because they'’re all

Full of water.

And guess what?

Water comes from lakes, rivers,

Oceans, and water also comes

From rain and melted snow, and

There is even water that flows

Under the ground.

Really?

Underground water?

Really?

Some streams and rivers flow

Underground and then come back

Up.

Most of that water is also

Rainwater.

There'’s so much water on our

Earth.

You'’re right, may.

Yeah.

Oh, those are lakes.

And what about that long

That'’s a really long river.

Oh, oh, and these are the

Oceans, right?

You got it.

Wow, the whole earth is

Covered in water.

Look at that.

Wow, now I see why there'’s

Always lots of water to drink

When we turn on the sink.

Well, even though our earth

Has lots of water, we actually

Can'’t drink all of it.

We can'’t?

How much of it can we drink?

May, if you push that button,

We can find out.

Ok. There.

Ooh.

Wow.

Ah, the area highlighted is

The fresh water, which is the

Only water we can actually use

And drink.

Well, that'’s the only fresh

Water on the earth?

Well, how about all the other

Water?

Yeah, like all the water in

The ocean.

Yes. There'’s lots of water in

Our oceans, but you can'’t take a

Bath in it or brush your teeth

In it or drink it.

Oh. Oh, yeah, because ocean

Water got in my mouth once.

Yuck! It'’s really salty.

And that'’s exactly why we

Can'’t use it.

Well, I know what water we

Can use--the fresh water that

Comes out of our sinks at home.

It tastes great.

Yeah, and I like to drink

Water, too, but if we all have

To share the fresh water, I

Guess we better not waste it.

So, where does all this fresh

Water come from?

Good question, gabriela.

The water flows from

Mountaintops, down into streams,

And into rivers and lakes.

They'’re all connected and part

Of a water system.

Water system.

Let'’s go investigate.

Coming through. Come on.

Ok.

Ok.

This is the sand table,

Where you can create your own

Water systems.

Wow, we get to play

With sand.

It'’s huge.

You can scoop out a river

That flows into a lake or make a

Tiny, winding creek.

Oh, oh, and we can work

Together to make a mountain out

Of sand.

Yes, and then you can make a

Path for a water stream to flow

Down the mountain.

And when you'’re ready to fill

Up your lakes, rivers, and

Streams, you can add...

Water!

Right. You can pretend that

This water is rain falling from

The sky.

Ok. Time to begin the water

Investigation.

Yay! Hey, you'’re a scientist.

You can try this at a science

Center, too.

It'’s time for the water

Investigation.

This pond is part of a water

System where plants and animals

Live, like this turtle.

Now you'’re going to make your

Own water system with lakes and

Rivers and streams right over

Here in this big sand table.

First, try working as a team to

Build a big sand mountain.

Then we'’ll pour water on top, to

See how it flows down your

Mountain, just like real rain

Water.

Keep building your mountain.

Make it nice and tall.

Good job.

Now let'’s pour some water on top

Of the mountain and pretend like

It'’s rain.

Observe the way the water flows

Down the mountain, just like a

River.

Hey, you created a water system,

Just like where the turtle

Lives.

Ok. The rain has stopped.

Now smooth out the sand and try

Making an even bigger water

System.

Start with a long river, and

Then connect it to a big lake,

Where all the water can collect.

Are you ready to add water?

Here it comes.

Look. The water is rushing down

Your river, going around the

Turn, and now it'’s filling up

The lake just like a real water

System.

Now you can see how all water is

Connected.

Great job investigating,

Now I'’m full.

Ooh, like a big lake full of

Rain water?

Yeah, yeah. I'’m big, full

Lake gerald.

Oh, I loved making a lake at

The sand table.

Hey, we'’re all fresh water

Experts now.

Let'’s say all the ways we know

How not to waste water.

Ok. I'’ll go.

Turn off the faucet after you

Take a drink so water doesn'’t

Keep dripping in your sink.

Ok, ok. I have a rhyme, too.

If a faucet is leaking, here'’s

What to do.

Tell an adult, and they'’ll fix

It and say, "thank you."

Ok. Here'’s mine.

Don'’t fill the bathtub all the

Way to the tippy-top.

Before the water spills over,

You just have to stop.

Good one.

Ok. My turn.

Don'’t flush the toilet over and

Over and over and over and over

And over and over.

Gerald, that wasn'’t a rhyme.

Yeah. You'’re right, but it's

Still a good way to not waste

Water.

Hey, scientists, if you

Finished your lunch, we still

Have time to explore some more

Of the science center.

Ok.

So clean up the table and

Follow me.

Ok.

Let'’s play pretend.

We'’re on a big rowboat rowing

Through different water systems.

Oh, good idea.

Everybody on the boat.

Ok.

Getting on the boat.

Here we are.

Let'’s start rowing. Ha!

And row. And row.

We'’re rowing down a small stream

On a mountain.

Yeah, but watch out because

We'’re now on a river, and it's

Going faster.

Oh, hey, hey, look.

It'’s snowing.

It'’s raining on our heads.

Oh, no!

The river is going the

Other way.

Oh, no! Turn this way.

Turn this way. Waah!

Ah, now it'’s nice and calm.

We can row slowly.

[Sighs]

Except we have to look out for

The waterfall!

Waah!

Splash. Splash. Ha ha ha!

Oh, let'’s row our boat over

To teacher susie.

Ok. Turn the boat around.

Here we go.

Ok. Turn it around.

Turn, turn, paddle, turn.

And rowing.

♪ Row, row, row your boat

Gently down the stream

Merrily, merrily

Merrily, merrily

Life is but a water system ♪

Good rowing.

I like how you all play with the

New ideas you learned.

Hey, who wants to hear a song

About water systems?

Let'’s follow a drop of water

Through a water system all the

Way to the sink in your home.

Yeah.

Microphone, please.

Oh.

♪ I love to drink

Cool, clear water

Not a drop should ever be wasted

I stand at my sink

And pour a drink

Of the greatest drink

I'’ve ever tasted

It'’s better than

Any juice or soda

So clean and crystal clear

And now I'’m gonna tell you how

The water made its journey

To get here

Well, some water

Evaporates on a lake

Rises up to a cloud

What a journey it will take

The cloud floats up so very high

The water turns to snow

And starts falling from the sky

Snowing on the mountaintops

The water'’s traveled far

Then it melts into a river

And the river then delivers

That water to a place

Called a reservoir

From there it'’s piped

To a plant

The next stop on its ride

Where they filter out

The dirt

And it'’s cleaned and purified

That sparkling water is piped

Into the faucet in your sink

Freshly purified and cleaned

And ready for you to drink

Mm!

As you might have suspected

The water cycle'’s connected

I love to drink

Cool, clear water

Not a drop should ever be wasted

I stand at my sink

And pour a drink

Of the greatest drink

I'’ve ever tasted ♪

[Cheering]

That was great.

Wow, it takes a lot of work

To get clean water into our

Homes.

Yeah. I'’ll remember that

Whenever I take a drink of

Water.

Tell me about your trip to the

Science center.

Oh, grandma, it was the

Greatest.

We learned about water and where

It comes from.

Ooh, where it comes from?

Oh, that'’s exciting.

So what'’d you learn?

Well, I learned that fresh

Water comes from snow, rain,

Lakes, and rivers and then comes

Through pipes right into houses.

Pipes? Oh, we are so lucky we

Have pipes that bring water into

Our homes, but listen to this.

A long time ago, there weren'’t

Pipes that did that.

It'’s true.

Before houses had pipes

Bringing water in, people poured

Buckets of water to fill up

Sinks and bathtubs.

They had to get the water from

The outside.

Whoo hoo!

What a way to take a bath, huh?

Some people even poured a bucket

Of water on their heads for a

Shower.

Watch out.

Then scientists and inventors

Made pipes that brought water

Into a house, and everything

Changed.

Soon water was flowing through

Pipes into sinks and bathtubs,

And people could do dishes and

Take warm baths and brush their

Teeth from fresh clean water

Coming in from pipes.

Hurray for indoor plumbing.

Wow, I can'’t believe people

Couldn'’t just turn on the faucet

And take a bath way back then.

Yeah. That'’s the way it was.

Hey, grandma, let'’s cheer for

Pipes.

Hip-hip...

Hooray for pipes.

And hip-hip hooray for

Grandma because she knows

Everything.

♪ I learned something cool

Something cool today

I know it upside down

And inside out

I learned all about... ♪

Ha ha ha!

♪ Water

Whoo hoo! Ha ha!

Scientist in the house. Yeah.

[Applause]

Ooh, hey, mom, guess what.

Today we learned we can only use

A teeny part of the water that'’s

In the world, so we have to try

To not waste water.

You'’re right, sid.

You know, there'’s a way you can

Save water every time you brush

Your teeth.

There is?

Absolutely, honey.

Hey, do you want to do an

At-home-with-mom investigation?

Yeah. Sure do.

Ok. Follow me.

Oh, great.

[Hums]

Ok. I'’m ready to brush my teeth,

Mom.

Well, actually, you'’re just

Going to pretend to brush your

Teeth.

Oh.

Take your pretend toothbrush...

Ok.

And put some pretend

Toothpaste on it.

All righty.

[Imitates squirting]

Ok. Ha ha ha!

Now pretend to brush your teeth,

But first, I'’ll plug the drain,

And I'’ll turn the water on and

Let it run the whole time

You'’re brushing.

The whole time?

It'’s ok to have the water on

This one time since it'’s a

Science investigation.

Oh, right.

Ok. Go.

And sid is brushing his teeth,

Oh, brushing so well, brush,

Brush, brush, brush.

Brush them all.

Brush the molars and the front

Incisors and the canines.

Now how about a big pretend

Spit?

[Imitates splash]

Ha ha ha!

Let'’s see how much water

You used.

Ok. Oh, wow.

The sink is full.

Hmm, we wasted so much water.

Ok. Now I'’ll unplug the

Drain, let the water go down,

And we'’ll try it again.

This time, I'’ll plug the

Drain again and only turn on the

Water when you need it.

Go ahead and pretend to wet your

Toothbrush.

Ok.

[Imitate running water]

And now brush away.

Ok.

And sid the brusher is

Brushing his teeth better than

Ever.

Brush, brush, brush, brush, up

And down, in the front, in back,

And all around, and--ok, sid--

Pretend spit.

[Imitates splash]

Now the water goes on just

Long enough to clean the pretend

Toothbrush.

Ok.

[Hums]

Wow, this time, we hardly used

Any water.

Hey, now I get it, mom.

Oh, I'’ll never leave the water

On again when I'’m brushing my

Teeth.

I'’ll just use the water I need.

Me, too. Ok.

Let'’s go have a pretend snack.

Yeah, pretend--

Pretend?

Just joking, sid.

Would you like a real yummy,

Yummy, yummy snack?

Yes. I would.

Ok. Let'’s go.

Pretend snack.

You'’re funny, mom.

Ha ha!

You know, it'’s great dr.

Beaks.

You should have been there.

Ooh, hi. What a great day.

I went on the best field trip

Ever to a science center.

Yeah. We did a fun water

Investigation, and I learned

That we can'’t waste water

Because our earth doesn'’t have a

Whole lot of fresh

Drinking water, but our earth

Does have a whole bunch of salty

Ocean water, so I was thinking

About ocean water and fresh

Water and--

Ok. I'’ve got it.

Here'’s my super duper ooper

Shmooper big idea.

I'’m going to invent the super

Duper fresh water machine.

It'’s a giant machine with lots

Of tubes going in and out and up

And down and all around, and

With my super duper fresh water

Machine, I can ride around on

The ocean, and slurp up lots of

Water...

[Slurping]

And then I'’ll take all the salt

Out of the water so it'’s nice

And clean for drinking.

Mm, ok. Time to head back to

Land and bring all this yummy

Water to everyone who needs it.

Here you go.

It'’s clean, delicious, fresh

Water, and it'’s good for you.

Drink up, everybody.

"Mm-mm." "Yum, yum, yum."
