What is your favorite light?

My favorite light is my

Nightlight. It'’s always on, so

If I have to get up in the

Middle of the night, I can see

Where I'’m going. And I love it

Because it'’s shaped like a

Soccer ball.

Cool.

And soccer'’s my favorite

Sport.

See, last summer I went to this

Dark, there was a huge fireworks

Show that lit up the whole sky

With all kinds of colors!

Can do with light. Like, you can

See it, and you can block it.

And you can turn lights on

And off.

Very interesting

Observations. And you'’re right,

Gabriela. You can turn some

Lights on and off but not all

Lights.

Really?

Well, all light comes from an

Energy source.

Oh. Do you mean like a light

Bulb in a lamp?

Or a flashlight?

Right. Those are both sources

Of light that people have made,

And we can turn those lights on

And off. But what we can'’t turn

On and off are natural energy

Sources--light that nature

Makes.

Oh, I know, like stars in the

Sky.

Exactly. Those make lots of

Light.

Hey, what about lightning?

Yeah. Lightning is another

Natural energy source of light.

Oh, oh, and the sun. Look. It

Lights up the sky.

Mm-hmm. That'’s right, gerald,

But you don'’t want to look

Directly into the sun, because

It'’s a very strong energy

Source, and the stronger the

Energy source, the stronger

Light it makes.

I wonder how many sources of

Light there are in the whole

World.

Hmm, I don'’t know about the

Whole world, but I do know where

We can discover lots of

Different light sources.

A light scavenger hunt?

Well, we'’re going to explore

The classroom to discover all

The different sources of light.

You mean we get to be light

Detectives?

Well, yes. That'’s exactly

What I mean. And you light

Detectives can draw pictures in

Your journals of all the light

Sources you find.

Ok.

Oh, oh! I see a source of

Light--the light from the

Ceiling.

Great work, light detective

Gabriela. Keep on exploring the

Classroom.

Hey, you'’re a scientist. You

Can try this, too.

It'’s time for the light

Scavenger hunt. Try to find a

Light source. It can be anything

That gives off light. You found

One! That lamp helps the plant

Grow. These little lights tell

Us the battery charger is

Working. This is a lava lamp. It

The flashlight sh**t out a beam

Country because there are all

Kinds of light sources

Everywhere.

Cool.

On a quiet country highway

A firefly sparks here and there

A full moon lights the skyway

On a two-lane road some

Headlights

Can be seen on a couple of cars

There'’s not a lot of lights out

Here

So you really can see the stars

Country lights

And city lights

Each light source helps you

See the sights

See for yourself

On starry nights

Country lights and city lights

The city has a hustle-bustle

Neon lights shine brightly

Incandescent and fluorescent

Lights

Light up the city nightly

It'’s almost as bright as

Daylight

With billboards and traffic

Of course

Lights coming from every

Direction

From many a different light

Source

Country lights

And city lights

Each light source helps you

See the sights

See for yourself

Energy sources of light.

I'’m finding lots of them

Right here on our car ride home.

Oh, you'’re right.

There are light sources

Everywhere. But you know, we

Didn'’t always have lights to

Help us see.

Really?

Yes, really. A long time ago,

People didn'’t have electric

Lamps to light up their houses

At night, so if they wanted to

See once the sun went down,

They'’d have to light candles or

Lanterns. Scientists tried to

Invent other sources of light,

But nothing worked. Then a

Scientist named thomas edison

Gathered a whole bunch of other

Scientists, and they all worked

Together for a long time. And

Like a good scientist, edison

Never gave up, and finally, good

Old edison and his team figured

It out. They made an electric

Light, and it worked! Ha ha ha!

So scientists invented

Electric lights?

Oh, you bet. Scientists

Invented all kinds of things

That make our lives better and

Brighter.

Wow! Thanks, grandma. My

Grandma knows everything.

♪ I learned something cool

Something cool today

I know it upside down

And inside out

I learned all about...

That people make. You can turn

It on and off.

Here'’s how you play. When I turn

Source--off, you make a funny

Face or do something funny, and

Then when I turn the light back

On, you freeze. Ok, I'’ll go

First. [Clears throat] light

Got to hold the funny face.

People. Some are natural, like

Super-duper-ooper-schmooper big

Idea. Introducing the amazing

Bright light shirt. You wear it

Just like a t-shirt, but it'’s

Really a light source, and you

Control how much light it gives

Off so when you wear it, you'’re

The light source. For lots of

Light, just turn the dial on

Your shirt to super-bright, and

You can light up your whole

Bedroom at night or even your

Whole backyard. Perfect for

Camp-outs. Or you can turn the

Dial so it gives off just a

Little light, like in your

Closet when you'’re trying to

Find your sneakers. And if

You'’re at a soccer or baseball

Game that goes on till after

Dark and everyone complains

Because it'’s hard to see, with

Your amazing bright light shirt,

You can come to the rescue and

Light up the whole stadium!

You'’ll be a hero in your amazing

Bright light shirt! And that'’s

My super-duper-ooper-schmooper

Big idea! Yay!
