It finally stopped raining, and

Colors, and they were so bright.

Oh, really?

On the computer.

Great idea, mom.

Special in the sky this morning.

A whole bunch of little birds

Were flying in the sky, and then

They landed on the same tree

Branch right outside my bedroom

Window.

Hi, sid. Um, I saw something

Special in the sky this morning.

An airplane, and it went like

Ha ha! Hello, gabriela.

I also saw something special

In the sky this morning.

Mm-hmm. I saw a rainbow.

Ah! I saw it, too!

Oh, you did? There were so

Many colors!

Yeah, red and green and blue!

And yellow and orange

And--and--

And--and a couple of others.

And it was this big!

Yeah. No. It was this big.

No, no. It was this big!

No, no. It was from here all

The way to here!

Yeah, it was this big, and

Then--and then--

It was huge.

And then I went in to get

Ready for school, and when I

Came out, the rainbow was gone.

Well, we'’re talking about the

Colors we saw in the sky this

Morning, '’cause we saw a

Rainbow.

Oh.

What did the rainbow look

Like?

It was big.

With lots and lots of colors.

Oh, how many colors? ? ?

? ? Ha!

Uh, I'’m not sure.

Well, here'’s a picture of a

Rainbow, and I'’ll put it up, and

Then we can count the colors.

Ok.

Cool.

Right. A rainbow has

Colors, all the colors found in

Light. Can you name them?

Red.

Orange.

Yellow.

Green.

Blue.

Uh, I'’m not sure.

Me neither.

Oh, that'’s ok. These last two

Colors are called indigo and

Violet.

Indigo?

Indigo is kind of blue-ishy.

And violet looks sort of

Purple-ish.

Right. Rainbows always have

These colors, and they'’re

Always in this same order.

Wow.

Let'’s say them together.

Red, orange, yellow, green,

Blue, indigo, and violet.

There are lots of colors.

Maybe that'’s why it's so hard to

Make a rainbow every single day.

Well, it does take special

Conditions to make a rainbow.

What kinds of things do you

To be a rainbow in the sky?

You need rain to have a

Rainbow.

But first you need the rain.

Good. Sometimes we see a

Sun comes out. But only if the

Sunlight can pass through the

Water drops in the air.

Well, what do the water drops

Do?

Good question, gabriela. The

Water drops break up the light

So we see all colors in a

Rainbow.

That doesn'’t happen every

Maybe we could paint a

Rainbow in the sky.

It sure is. It'’s a called a

Prism.

Ooh!

Yeah, it shows us all the

Different colors in the light

Just like a rainbow does, and

The colors are in the same order

As a real rainbow.

Wow, a prism.

It looks smooth.

Yeah, it'’s clear, and it

Looks like it'’s made of glass.

Great observations. A prism

Is smooth and clear, and many

Prisms are made of glass.

So--so how does this

Rainbow-maker prism thingy work?

Well, I have a prism here for

Each of you, and your job is to

Investigate and discover how to

Make the prism work. Sound good?

Yeah, sure!

Hey, you'’re a scientist. You

Can try this, too.

Ok, scientists, let'’s

Investigate how to use a prism.

First try holding it, then

Making some observations. You

Can see through it. The ends are

Shaped like a triangle, and the

Sides are smooth and straight.

What happens when you hold your

Prism in the sunlight? Keep

Moving it around.

Hey, you made a rainbow. The

Sunlight passing through the

Prism is just like sunlight

Passing through droplets of

Water--they both make rainbow

Colors. When sunlight passes

Through the prism, you can make

A rainbow almost anywhere. You

Made a rainbow on your

Hands, on the table, and on your

Hands again. Where else can you

Make a rainbow?

You made one on the floor.

And there'’s a rainbow on the

Ceiling. All rainbows have the

Same colors, and they'’re always

In the same order. Can you draw

I get out my camera and take a

Picture of it.

Rainbow I'’ve ever seen. One time

I was riding in a plane flying

High above the clouds. The

Bright sun was shining up above

Me, and it was raining down

Below me, and when I looked out

The airplane window, I saw

Something I couldn'’t believe. I

Saw a rainbow that was a full

Circle.

A full circle?

Yes! You see, up in the sky

Between the sun and the rain

Where there'’s no ground to get

Place you can see a full circle

Rainbow. It'’s a real sight to

See. I took a picture, and it'’s

Of all. Woo-hoo! It'’s a beauty!

I never knew there could be a

Full circle rainbow.

Oh, yeah. I only saw it once,

But it can happen.

Idea. I'’m going to invent my

Very own super jumbo power

Prism, the world'’s biggest

Prism. It'’s just like the prism

We used in school but bigger.

Bigger than a house, bigger than

A skyscraper, bigger than two

Skyscrapers. It'’ll be so big,

You can make rainbow colors that

Everyone in your whole

Neighborhood can see and

Everyone in the whole country

Can see. Actually, the super

Jumbo power prism will make

Rainbow colors so big that it

Will stretch around the whole

World. Everyone on earth will

Stop, look up at the sky, and

Say, "wow, those are the most

Amazing, biggest, most colorful

Rainbow colors I'’ve ever seen."

All thanks to my super jumbo

Power prism!

And that'’s my super duper ooper

Schmooper big idea! Yay!

[Canned applause]
