But, susie, sometimes I lie

In bed and I squirm and squirm,

First I want you to wiggle

And stretch and get rid of

All that extra energy!

Ok. Great wiggling and

Stretching. Now we'’re going to

Prepare our room to help us

Relax. I'’ll start by dimming

The lights.

Ok.

Hey, you'’re making it dark

In here.

That'’s right. Bright lights,

Television, and music can all

Be distracting, so I'’m helping

Us focus on sleeping.

Oh! And loud noises make it

Hard to sleep, too! Ha ha! Oh.

[Whispering] sorry.

That was a loud noise.

Good, gerald.

Let'’s all whisper.

Susie, can I hold fluffles?

He helps me sleep.

That'’s a great idea, may.

Ok. Ok. I'’ll be right back.

Ok.

I got him. I got him. Ok.

Ok. Everybody now take in

A deep breath.

[All inhale]

And now let it go.

[All exhale]

Now I'’m going to teach you

A relaxation exercise.

It'’s something you can do

At home to help your body relax

When you'’re feeling too excited

To sleep. Go ahead and lie down

On a nice, soft mat and we'’ll

Get started.

Great!

Ok.

Lie down right here.

Hey, you'’re a scientist. When

You'’re having trouble sleeping,

You can try this, too.

Ok, scientists, we'’re going

To do a relaxation exercise that

Will help get your body ready to

Sleep. Put down your mats and

Lie down on your nice, soft

Pillow. First stretch out your

Feet. Circle them around. Now

Relax them. Next, raise up your

Legs and wiggle them in the air.

And relax. Now raise up your

Arms and stretch. Make a fist,

Then relax. Make a fist, then

Relax. Jiggle your arms and drop

Them. Now raise your shoulders,

And relax them. Do you feel your

Whole body relaxing, getting

Ready to sleep? Go ahead and

Close your eyes and take a deep

Breath. Put your hands on

Your stomach and breathe in

And breathe out. Breathe in,

Breathe out. Breathe in,

Breathe out. Now you'’re ready

To sleep. Very nice.

While you'’re sleeping, your body

Is growing and your brain is

Getting ready to learn and

Discover new things. And after

You'’ve had a nice nap, you'll

Have lots of energy to

Investigate, explore, and play!

Sleeping makes your body feel

Great.

[Kids yawning]

I feel nice and calm.

I fell asleep.

Me, too. I took a quick nap,

And I feel great.

[Snoring]

[May, gabriela, and sid chuckle]

He'’s still sleeping.

Shh. Let'’s let gerald

Continue to sleep.

He must be tired.

Yeah. The relaxation thing

Really worked.

Sometimes we need to let our

Body calm down and give it

A chance to rest.

Oh! Maybe his body'’s getting

Energy to play more.

Oh, you could be right.

That'’s what happens while we

Sleep.

Or maybe his body is growing

While he sleeps.

[May chuckles]

Find a big elephant sleeping in

Find another bed.

[All laugh]

Dinosaur?

Hmm, I don'’t know. What do

You call a sleeping dinosaur?

A brachio-snore-us.

[Kids laugh]

Oh! Oh! I'’ve got another one.

Why did the cat sleep next to

A ruler?

I don'’t know. Why did he

Sleep next to a ruler?

Because he wanted to see how

Long he slept.

[Kids laugh]

Ok, ok. Ok. How do you get

A baby to sleep on a spaceship?

I don'’t know. How do you get

A baby to sleep on a spaceship?

You "rocket."

[Kids laugh]

The spaceship ♪

Shh. Don'’t wake

The rocket, baby.

Ha ha. Now that'’s sleepy.

Shh. Gerald'’s sleeping.

[May chuckles]

Ah. Ok, fellow explorers,

We are here to watch something

Amazing, something super

Special. Gerald is taking a nap.

[Snoring]

It appears to me that he is

Lying on his back.

Oh, I see something. He'’s

Moving. His arms are going out.

He'’s stretching.

A two-arm stretch. Amazing!

Is he waking up?

Ahh.

Phew. That was close.

Yeah. Ha ha. Wait. He'’s

Moving again. It looks like--

Yes, he'’s going to wake up.

Ah, ooh--

Ahh...

Nope. Still sleeping.

I never knew we moved around

So much when we sleep.

[Snoring continues]

He looks like a frog.

[Sid chuckles]

But he sounds like a duck.

He'’s not saying "quack."

He'’s saying "cake."

Maybe he'’s dreaming he's

A duck who likes to eat cake.

Gerald!

Hey, that was a great nap.

And now I have lots of energy.

Ha! Come on. Let'’s go sing!

You know, people aren'’t the

Only ones who need sleep. Every

Living creature needs sleep.

Dreaming about the otter

That he ought to be

It looks like the dolphin

Is half-asleep

She keeps one eye open

She'’s sneaking a peek

At all of the penguins

Who snuggle real tight

Standing together

They nap day and night

We all need our sleep

There'’s no doubt about it

We wouldn'’t feel good

Couldn'’t live without it

Bats are kind of batty

They sleep upside-down

Hanging by their toes

In caves underground

We all need our sleep

Everyone sleeps

In their own special way

Waking up fresh

For a brand-new day ♪

So they don'’t get all grumpy,

We even learned a relaxation

Exercise to calm down so you

Can fall asleep even if you

Don'’t feel like it.

Oh, you two are quite

The scientists. Did you know

That when I was in college,

I helped scientists who study

Sleep?

Scientists study sleep?

You betcha! Scientists still

Have a lot to learn about sleep.

So in college, I volunteered to

Help them. They put special

Wires on me so they could see

What was going on while I was

Fast asleep.

Oh. Did it hurt?

Not at all! With their

Special machines, the scientists

Tracked how much I moved, my

Breathing, and heartbeat. They

Even studied what my brain was

Doing when I was asleep.

And guess what the scientists

Learned about me? I get about

Hours of sleep a night. And

That'’s a good thing. Ha ha ha.

And here'’s something else they

Learned--i don'’t snore.

Whoo-hoo!

Hey, we kind of did that when

We were watching gerald sleep,

Except we didn'’t have special

Machines.

Ha ha ha. Like I said, you

Two are quite the scientists.

On my biggest adventure

Ever, but...

[Yawns]

All this playing and talking

About sleep is making me...

[Yawns]

Sleepy. Boy, I can'’t wait to get

Into my cozy, warm bed.

But what if I didn'’t have

A cozy, warm bed nearby? What

Would I do if I were really,

Really sleepy and I needed

A bed? Hmm. I know just what

The world needs. Ha ha! Here'’s

My super duper ooper shmooper

Big idea!

It'’s the insta-bed--so small you

Can fit it in your pocket. But

Open it up, and it'’s a bed with

Pillows, blankets, your favorite

Stuffed animal, and a little

Dome that blots out noise and

Light so you can fall asleep.

And you can use it anywhere.

Do you want to sleep with bats

In a cave? No problem. The

Insta-bed can hang upside-down.

Night-night, bats.

Flap. Flap. Flap. Flap.

"Ah, night-night, sid."

Or when you'’re visiting

Penguins and it'’s time to sleep,

It'’s a snap to take a nap. Just

Push your insta-bed right into

The penguins'’ circle. Is there

Room for me to nap with you,

Penguins?

"Sure. Sid, stay warm."

Waddle, waddle, waddle.

The insta-bed. Don'’t sleep

Away from home without it.

And that'’s my super duper ooper

Shmooper big idea! Yeah! Whoo!

[Canned applause plays]

I am sid the...

[Echoing] science kid!

Ok, dr. Beaks, you can stay up

And play if you want, but I need

My sleep. Ahh! Remember,
