MARTIN:
We're here off the coast
of North America.

CHRIS:
On an island in the Bahamas.

MARTIN:
In the clear waters of
the Caribbean Sea.

CHRIS:
It's us, the Kratt Brothers!

I'm Chris.

I'm Martin!

And out there in the waters
of the Caribbean

live all kinds of fish.

And one thing all fish
have in common,

no matter where they live,

is the incredible ability
to swim.

They glide through the water
almost effortlessly,

partly because of
a smooth, sleek,

torpedo-shaped body design

that cuts through the water.

And their movement
is powered by fins.

We have legs, fish have fins.

And all fish,
from a little pufferfish

to the great white shark,

rely on fins to move them
through the water.

Even underwater mammals
like dolphins

have fin-like things
called flippers,

which they use to swim.

CHRIS:
Most fish have about
four types of fins.

The tail fin is the engine

that powers them through
the water.

MARTIN:
The pectoral fins are mostly for
steering, stopping and control.

And the other fins are for
general balance

as they move through
the water.

But there's one fish out here
who uses his fins

to do more than
swim through the water.

And that's who we're
heading out to find.

BOTH:
Flying fish!

CHRIS:
His fins take him to new
heights... in the air!

A fish that flies,
now that's amazing!

Imagine if we had the creature
powers of the flying fish!

I'm getting it!

Whoo-hoo!

I mean, fins, in action.

It's flying fish

I'm riding a flying fish!

Whoa!

Ahhhh!

Oooh, I'm glad we're doing this
over water.

(Sputtering, coughing)

Ah!

Did you get that, guys?

Whoops.

Uh, yeah, but could you
do that again?

What?!

Ha, kidding.

Got it right here!

And with the wind simulator
on...

CHRIS:
Aha, fin-tastic!

That's it!

The shape of the wing.

Held so it's curvy on top
and flatter on the bottom.

That's the key to lift!

Just like a jet airplane,

the air has to move faster

over the top of the wing
than the bottom.

That puts pressure
on the bottom of the wing

and pushes the wing upward.

It's called lift.

Ho-ho, flying machine
version . on the way!

See, all we needed
was the video.

You're a master
with duct tape, Chris!

I know!

Ugh!

KOKI:
They may be pretty good
at science,

but at inventions?
We'll see.

Get back here soon!

MARTIN & CHRIS:
Done!

Ta-da!

Okay, that still looks scary.

Ah, but it's new and improved!

We'll call it
the Flying Fishinator.

BOTH:
The Flying Fishinator?

Really?

Okay, so I'm better
at animal names.

Ho-ho, she's a beauty.

And she's going to soar!

Once you guys get us
the last bit of data, that is.

Last bit of data?

Well, the wings
are the right shape,

but every flying machine needs
some kind of engine, right?

Exactly!

Okay, so how do flying fish
power through the air?

What's their engine?

Can you get back to us on that
as soon as you can?

Uh, sure, yeah,
we can do that!

Ugh!

She's really coming along
nicely, bro.

(Crashing)

I can't believe I'm doing this.

Miniaturize.

Good luck, Koki!

Thanks.

Listen, Fishy,

just show me the way
you power those flights,

we'll keep this nice
and simple, okay?

Whoa, slippery!

Very slippery!

This creature-riding stuff
is harder than it looks!

Okay, Koki,
as soon as you're on,

I'm ready to startle that
flying fishy.

I'm trying,
but not... yet!

I didn't do anything!

Then, who did?!

Oh!

You did!

Ha, ha!
It's Click!

And Whistle!

Uh-oh, but dolphins eat
flying fish!

And Click and Whistle
don't even see Koki!

Click! Whistle!

It's me, Koki.

Remember?

We invented that
Dolphin Decoder!

Saved you from a shark!

It's no use!

Let's get out of here, Fishy!

mph.

This tail is really
swishing now!

Whoa!

Oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa!

Whoa, look at that tail go!

That's so cool!

(Gasping)

We have lift-off!

Yes!

Go, Fishy, go!

The tail!

It's all in the tail!

swishes a second.

It's like a take-off motor.

It powers the fish
to just the right speed

to take off and glide!

Oh, man, that
should be us out there.

The sooner we finish
the invention,

the sooner we will be, bro!

Get me off this fish!

Koki, check out the turning!

How does he steer?

(Koki whimpering)

Whoa!

There! See?

He moves his
fin-wing-a-ma-thingies!

Got it!

Moving the angle of each wing

changes the lift on
each side.

Nothing a roll of duct-tape and
a few socks can't take care of!

Oh, no.

It's the end of the ride!

Who-o-oa!

CHRIS:
Fin-tastic!

The tail fin can boost him
right back up

so he doesn't
even have to land.

No wonder their flight can last

for or football fields
without stopping.

It's all about
the tail fin power.

Tail propeller coming up!

Koki!

Oh, no, she's getting
too far out.

She's going to be
lost at sea!

Whoa!

Whoa!

Oh, no!

Whoa!

Wha-- Oof!

Ah!

(Gasping)

Ah!

I like it better when
the Kratt bros

are the ones that are
in a jam,

and Aviva and I are the ones
getting them out of it.

AVIVA:
Guys!

Koki's way out in the middle
of the ocean, somewhere,

anywhere, and she's not
responding to her Creature Pod!

I think
it might be broken!

You've got to help me find her.

Aviva and Koki have saved us
with a great invention

more times
than we can count.

Now, it's our turn.

You've got a point, bro,

and this invention will come
through in the clutch.

She's ready to fly!

It's time to take the
Flying Fishinator airborne!

BOTH:
To the Koki rescue!

Whoa!

(Both shouting)

Whoo-hoo! Yes!

It flies!

Whoa! Sort of!

Ha ha, and we're back
in the wilderness!

Wahoo!

Oh! Oof!

Wahoo!

Ahhhh!

Aw, I wish I was back
at the lab.

This field work is so
overrated.

Besides, who's going
to find me out here?

(Sighing)

(Water splashing)

What?

The flying fish.

What are they doing?

Ah!

It looks like--
like strings of eggs.

I must be in the middle
of a big egg-laying frenzy.

Fishy?

Is that you?

You got away from those
dolphins?

Yay!

Whoa.

Okay, easy, little guys.

That's enough eggs, I think.

'Cause this raft is starting
to sink!

Whoa!

Oh!

My mask!

(Gasping for air)

(Panting)

Help!

Hee-e-e-elp!

Oh, I don't see her anywhere.

Ugh!

I should be back at the lab,

making an invention to save her,
that's where I should be.

But I just gotta find her!

(Motor stalling)

Hey!

(Gasping)

No! Wait!

Stop!

You can't do that!

You're gumming up the motor.

No! Stop!

Guys!
What are you doing?

Well, we're flying to the rescue
on our invention!

Gah!

But-- but it'll never hold.

No offense, but that's an
engineering nightmare!

Aaaah!

This friendly competition
is going haywire.

Maybe we should have just stuck
to what we each know and love.

And for me,
that's inventing!

See, this tail-powered flight

was really nothing to--
oof-- figure out.

Nah, it's a totally
comfortable ride.

Oh!

All you need is an analytical
mind, some ingenuity,

a couple of socks, and-- ah!

Uh-oh!

The Flying Fishinator's
going down!

Well, bro.

I think we lost this
competition!

Ugh.

I may not have won this
competition, but I know this.

I can make a great Power Suit
invention in the clutch.

Now, if only I could get these
to the brothers

so the Wild Kratts team could
work the way it was meant to!

MARTIN & CHRIS:
Whoa!

Oof!

(Aviva giggling)

Just the guys I was looking for!

Our invention, well...

let's just say it didn't
exactly soar.

Yeah, and our creature
adventure,

let's just say it never
took off, either.

So, all bets are off?

Deal?

BOTH:
Yes!

So, we're agreed that everyone
gets to stick to their own job?

Yup!

Creature adventuring
takes some know-how,

and you guys are
so great at it.

And inventing
is a real challenge,

and you're the best there is.

Yes!

The Wild Kratts team
is back to normal.

Whew!

Hey, what creature do you want
to adventure with?

Those flying fish,
of course.

We just scratched
the surface.

Let's do it!
Whoo!

Come on, fishies!

Let's fly, little buddies.

'Cause we're back,

adventuring free
and in the wild!

Yee-ha!

Whoo-hoo!

So, the flying fish have taken
their fins to a whole new level

with the power
of gliding flight.

And if we want to get a close
look at these amazing fish

and their special fins,

the best time to do it
is at night.

Flying fish
are attracted to light

because their natural food
is often

near the surface of the water
where it's brightest.

So, if we make the area
around our boat really bright,

the flying fish
might actually come to us.

Flying fish usually feed
at night

on microscopic animals called
plankton, and small fish.

So, what we're going to do
is chum the water

with a frozen block of tiny
little bits of food

to attract them.

Flying fish swim in schools
of up to one million fish,

but we'd be happy
if we caught just one!

Over there!

Yeah, we got one!

All right, a flying fish!

Whew.

Let's get him nice and safe and
comfy in this hold right here.

He's beautiful!

MARTIN:
This is a little flying fish,

but flying fish can grow to be
about this long.

Wow, look at these long pectoral
fins on the flying fish.

They are so long,
they really are like wings!

They give the flying fish
the power to glide.

You can really see it
in slow motion

when they spread those fins out,

lifting the fish right
into the air.

Hey, buddy,
let's see your tail fin.

The bottom part is really long
and stiff.

That's the motor that powers
the fish through take-off

at swishes per second.

You can see the bottom part of
the fin dipped in the water,

giving that all-important
final power boost.

CHRIS:
Flying power for a fish
is not only cool,

it's a great anti-predator
defense,

because if a tuna, swordfish
or dolphin is after him,

a flying fish
just zips out of the water

and into the air,

and the predator
loses track of him.

All right, buddy,

thanks for letting us have
a close look at you!

Time to head back home,
living free and in the wild.

Happy flying!

Keep on creature adventuring!

We'll see you on
the creature trail!
