Previously on "The Walking Dead"...

My friends have been taken,
removed from the Commonwealth.

Magna, Connie, Kelly, all of them.

Tell us where our friends are.

I'll show you.

I know the route the supply
train takes to get there.

Commonwealth has a working train?

It's part of a plan...

Expand the Commonwealth's reach.

[Breathing heavily]

[Grunts]

The only thing I've
ever known is the fight.

There's so much we've done.

So much more to do.

But I want to believe there's hope.

That together, there's hope.

Isn't there?

[Grunts]

Hershel: [Distorted] Mom!

Hershel! Hershel!

[Indistinct conversation]

Hey, hey. Hey.

Shh.

[Vehicles rumbling]

[Winces]

[Exhales sharply]

[Bindings snap]

Shh.

[Groans]

[Grunting, rapid g*nshots fire]

Man: Oh, sh*t!

[Tires screeching]

Aah!

- [Thud]
- Aah!

[Engines revving in distance]

[Walker growling]

[Gasps]

Hey!

Hey, hey!

Hey! Hey!

Over here, over here.

[Exhales sharply]

You okay?

Been better.

You?

I've been worse.

Trooper : Trooper
from Outpost checking in.

No sign of or the escapees. Over.

[Radio static]

Trooper : Copy that, .

This is .

Got a set of boot tracks.

Looks like they could be 's.

f*ck.

Let's go.

[Gasps]

[Breathing heavily]

- [Banging]
- [Groans]

[Everyone groaning]

[Banging continues]

[Banging stops]

Is everybody alright?

[Groans]

Ezekiel.

Are you hurt?

No.

Not since they...

- How long were we out for?
- I don't know.

My neck's still sore from
whatever they injected us with.

One of the trucks is missing.

No sign of Gabriel, Maggie, or Rosita.

They're unloading a bunch
of stuff off the trucks.

Can you see the kids?

No.

I was in and out.

We stopped for a few minutes.

There was a crash.

You think that was them?

It fits.

They either bailed, or...

Or what?

[Door opens]

Good morning, and welcome.

Today is the first
day of a new beginning.

The world works when
everyone knows their place.

Your place is at the bottom.

All of the resources that
we use to bring the old world

back into the new and sustain it,

it all starts at places like this.

You should take comfort
in knowing that good people

will benefit from your labor here.

That is your redemption.

That is your salvation.

Your children are safe
and being attended to.

Play by the rules, you
get to see them again.

In order to do that,
you must work as one.

Here...

nobody has a name

because we have no need for them.

I'm not gonna tell you mine,

and you will not...

address each other by yours.

[Keys jangle]

When I point at you, you stand up.

You exit the rear.

You.

- You.
- Man: Let's got! Let's go!

You.

You.

You, you.

You.

Gonna be okay.

You.

And you.

[Exhales sharply]

Man: Let's go! Move!

[Softly] I am gonna get us out of here.

All three of us.

I promise.

Watch Trooper: Step out, exile.

They are being transported
to another site.

The rest of you will work
until the tracks are clear.

Everybody up!

The work is hard,

but you'll be protected
by our great Commonwealth.

And although you have been
delivered from the paradise

of the Commonwealth,

take solace in knowing
that it's better being here

than it is being out
there... In the wastelands.

Man: Alright, everyone! Get to work!

Let's go, let's go!

Come on, move!

[Birds chirping]

[Walker growling]

Mom! Mom!

Hershel!

[Walker continues growling]

Left.

Wait. Wait a minute.

Hold up.

What's the plan here?

We're gonna follow the
convoy wherever it goes.

And then what? There are two of us.

What, do we knock on the door and say,

"Can we see our daughter, please?"

Do you have a better idea?

I'm all ears.

Let's split up. We'll cover more ground.

No way. I'm not leaving you.

[Sighs]

Then left. Come on.

[Growling]

[Grunts, groans]

[Walker thuds]

Aah!

[Groans]

- What is it?
- My arm is dislocated.

I need you to pop it back into place.

Come here. Take my arm, pull it out.

Okay. You're gonna have
to put your leg right here.

Right here, come on.

Okay, on the count of .

, , .

- [Snap]
- [Screams]

Okay.

We need to rest.

God, I should've never brought her here.

Come on. Don't do that.

Do what?!

t*rture yourself. What good does it do?

What do you tell me
when I b*at myself up?

Quit bitching and move forward.

Quit bitching and move forward.

Okay?

Just take a breath.

[Exhales sharply]

Okay.

[Train horn blows in distance]

Is that a train?

That's a train.

[Train horn blows in distance]

Can't be a train.

There's six of 'em.

[Horn honking in distance]

[Men shouting indistinctly]

[Brakes squealing]

You think we can follow
it without them seeing us?

I think we hang back far
enough, we'll be fine.

They got Connie.

[Radio static]

Trooper: Guy's saying I
have to put an exile on here.

It's a cargo transport and against regs.

Over.

Man: It's been cleared from up on high.

She's not gonna be a worker.
She's designation two.

Oh, sh*t.

Yeah, exactly.

Get her there safely.

Copy that.

What's "designation two"?

We can't go get her.

They'll radio ahead.

We'll go find the kids.

Hey.

We'll hang back, and we'll
follow it to the others,

and we're gonna bust
them out all at once.

[Rail cars clattering,
train horn blowing]

[Rail cars clattering]

[Engine revving]

Damn it!

Just get ahead of it.

Train's gotta hit that junction.

We should just sit tight until it does.

I don't think I can do that.

Do what?

Sit tight.

Daryl.

Hey.

When I saw Connie get on that train,

and I saw the door shut,

I thought the same thing that you did.

What's that?

The cave.

Do you remember what Kelly said
the minute her sister was gone?

"We can't save them if we're dead."

We can play this however you want.

But if we go it alone,

we might be making the
same mistakes again.

Alright.

Good.

[Train horn blows in distance]

[Motorcycle approaching]

[Engine idling]

[Engine shuts off]

checking in.

Crossing is clear. No sign of them.

Gonna move to the next
area for our sweep.

- Over.
- Trooper : Copy .

Give it a double check.
We need to find them.

[Walker growling]

[Both grunting]

[Walker growling]

No! [Grunting]

No.

[Breathing heavily]

It's alright.

[Vehicle approaching]

, finish up there.

[Indistinct radio chatter]

Maggie: They just
ripped him away from me.

I wasn't strong enough.

[Sniffles]

I hate not knowing.

It's worse.

I shouldn't have...

I shou...

[Exhales sharply]

[Sobbing]

[Inhales shakily, exhales]

This is not on you.
You are just one person.

Doesn't matter.

It's on me.

You know...

...I barely saw Daryl

when I got my new job
at The Commonwealth.

I barely saw anyone.

Just doing our own thing.

[Sniffles]

It was like the old world.

Back then, we never would've
spoken to each other.

But after The Fall, we were
forced to become family.

That's a good thing.

It's a gift that's
held, even in that place.

They had to come at us
when we were separated.

What does that say to you?

That we scare the sh*t out of Pamela.

Exactly. And she failed.

We're not alone any more,
and we're gonna make it right.

- Gabriel: Carol.
- Rosita: Maggie!

How did you find us?

We heard a train.

Did you hear a train?

Yeah, yeah.

Hey.

Where's Daryl? Is he with you?

He's inside.

[Coughing]

Daryl: Let me see.

[Breathing rapidly]

You're running outta time.

I'm gonna ask you to
please do something good

with the time you have left.

[Coughing]

Where's that train going?

They put a friend of mine on it.

Said she was "designation two."

What's that mean?

[Coughs, sniffles]

You know, I was like you once.

I joined the force.

'Cause my family needed money.

I'm guessing that's your story, too.

[Coughs]

They took my kids from me,

and I want them back.

- You hear me?!
- Aah!

[Coughs]

Train's gonna be here soon.

That's alright. We can hurry.

You wanna die quick?

Or you wanna die screaming?

I know you.

Every Sunday, back pew,
closest to the door.

You'd always come a little
late and leave a little early.

Seemed like you wanted
to talk about something.

Does God forgive people like me?

I don't know.

I wish I did.

It's, like...

torn up all the time with guilt.

[Coughs] And shame.

Because you're a coward.

It's okay.

You're trying not to be.

Fear can make us do things that...

that bring shame.

Could also push us into the light.

And you're trying to
do the right thing now.

He sees that.

I see it, too.

We all do.

I wish I'd talked to you sooner.

I wish you had, too.

[Coughing]

[Gasps, coughing]

People remember the
last thing that you do.

The end of each story is very important.

How do you want yours to end?

They punish exiles by
making them do hard labor.

Your friends are on railway duty.

Where?

I don't know.

They called me out when you escaped.

You'll have to follow
the train to find out

where your friends are.

I've only heard rumors
about designation two.

They're taken somewhere far away.

They're never seen again.

[Coughs, gasps]

Will you help me?

And pray with me while I go?

Can you give us a minute?

If that train pulls in, Connie's gone.

If they see us coming,
they're gonna radio ahead.

The best way for us to
get the kids is with them

not knowing that we're coming.

We can't just leave
her on there, though.

We won't. I think
there's a way to do both.

[Indistinct conversations]

Ah, excuse me.

Hey.

[Hushed] There's three guards.

We should run. We can
make it to the trees.

Don't do anything.

They can't catch all of us.

Stop talking and keep working.

Hey. Don't mean to bother you, but...

my wife was one of the ones
that left on the trucks.

I wonder if you could
just tell me where she...

Ow!

You stop to eat. You stop to sleep.

Understood?

Understood.

Okay, now, go, go! Hurry!

Come on!

Ezekiel, let's go.

Man: Runners!

Man # : They're heading in the trees!

Go!

[Rapid g*nshots f*ring]

Aah!

[g*nshots stop]

Everybody up!

Back to work!

Now!

[Walker growling]

[Brakes squealing]

[Switch creaking]

[Walker growling]

Train to Outpost . We
got a stuck junction switch.

Gonna be a few minutes
before we dislodge.

Over.

Train to Outpost , come in.

Over.

[Radio static]

Put it down.

Over there.

[Walker growling]

Hey! How hard could it be?

Come over here and I'll show you.

assh*le.

[Sighs] Come on, man.

- [Growling]
- Woods.

The flank.

Woods are cleared.

Heading back.

[g*n cocks]

[Gasps]

- Easy.
- Quiet.

[Grunts]

"How hard can it be?"

It's bent.

Somebody jammed this.

Everybody get back here now.

Does anyone copy?

[Rapid g*nshots fire]

[Rapid g*nshots f*ring]

[b*ll*ts ricocheting]

Hey.

Drop it.

Drop it!

Crossbow, too.

You took out that antenna? Hmm?

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

You cut the wire or you shut it off?

Answer me!

[Door opens, closes]

You okay?

[Motorcycle engine revving]

[Rapid g*nshots fire]

[Growling]

[Exhales sharply]

[Groans]

[Groans]

I do what you're asking, I'm dead.

You know what? You're dead if you don't.

Sit down.

My family lives at a nearby outpost.

Warden finds out I helped you...

I'll end up just like your friends.

They took our children.

You said you have a family?

I bet hehad a family.

There's a map.

Back at the train.

It's in the engine room.

Let's go.

[Motorcycle approaching]

_

_

[Chuckles]

Wilson: Stay back!

Carol: Put it down.

I'll do it! Please.

I help you, my wife
and two boys will die!

No, listen.

Just tell us where our people
are, and we'll injure you.

N-Nothing serious. Just
enough to make it look like...

Make it look like you barely got away,

and you can tell him you escaped.

He'll never know.

He'll know I lied!

He'll t*rture me when
he finds out I did!

[Sobbing]

Then he'll k*ll my family.

- Please...
- I can't!

I'm sorry!

No!

[Indistinct conversations]

[Crows cawing in distance]

Don't turn around.

What do you want?

I want to get on the same page.

I stayed away from you for years.

For a reason.

Well, you need to shelve that sh*t.

Shi...

Melting people's faces with irons?

Coercing women into marrying you?

Slaughtering my people?

That sh*t I have notforgotten.

Nobody has.

Yeah, well, just so you know,
I haven't forgotten, either.

And for the sh*t I've done,

I probably deserve to
be in a place like this.

It fits.

But, Ezekiel, it doesn't fit you.

It doesn't fit the
others, and it sure as hell

doesn't fit my wife and
baby that's on its way.

Where did they take her?

I don't know.

But I need to find her.

I promised.

Look, man...

I am coming to you as a f...

Soon-to-be father and as
a man who has led people.

We have got to put our sh*t
aside and work together.

For everyone.

What are you thinking?

I know this Warden's playbook,
using fear as a w*apon.

You wanna scare people into an uprising?

That only works if you're
the one holding the g*n.

Fear's not gonna work.

But hope?

Hope will.

And that is your thing, Ezekiel.

It is definitely not mine.

This place thrives on separating people.

They're already breaking us down.

We have to unite folks, but...

But what?

We need a... a spark that
reaches into their hearts

and wakes them up.

I don't know how to do that here.

We can barely talk to each other.

I can get you a spark.

But when I do...

You need to know that I doubt

that I'll be getting
outta here with you.

What's that supposed to mean?

What are you talking about?

Man: Back to work!

Back to work!

Now! You! Back to work.

Are you with me?

I'm with you.

For now.

_

We don't know.

_

_

_

Don't worry. We'll find Kelly.

_

We can go back to the train,
get the long-range radio back up.

Come on.

Get the radio back up.

Alright, let's pack it in and load up!

Man: Come on, you
heard him! Let's go! Go!

- Load up!
- Move it!

[Growling]

[g*nshots f*ring]

Alright, let's go! Move it along!

Move it along.

Outpost this is , I need help.

The train was overtaken, and
I'm in the woods, I'm lost.

They're still looking for me.

I-I need to get back to the site. Over.

Outpost , please.

I need help, over.

Woman: , what was your
original sit-rep and location?

Junction seven! I'm the last one left!

Damn. Copy that.

Don't worry. We'll get you home.

Do you still have your compass?

- Yes.
- Good.

Head due north through the woods.

You'll eventually reach a breach.

After that, you'll be on a rough road.

That's Packard Avenue.

Gauge your direction, and head south.

Copy so far?

Yes, copy.

Eventually you'll hit highway .

Take it east.

Get off at Crooks.

Head down the road until you
find a suburban neighborhood.

A section has been shored
up and fortified with walls.

You'll see friendly
faces in the guard tower.

[Vehicle approaching]

When you get here, you'll
take the northeast gate

closest to the railroad tracks,

and we'll have guards
on the lookout for you.

Unfortunately, we don't
have any spare units

to send out your way for a pickup.

We have a convoy coming
in for colonial processing.

Governor's orders.

Open up.

Rosita: , did you say a convoy
is coming in for reprocessing?

Yes, ma'am.

Word is that most of the
processees used to live here

before the Commonwealth
claimed the territory

and turned it into an outpost,

back when it was still
called Alexandria.

The Warden will debrief
you when you get to base.

In the meantime, keep an eye out

for any more hostiles on the road.

If you have to engage, sh**t to k*ll.

Watch your six, and godspeed, .

Thanks, . I'll see you soon.

_

Milton has underestimated
us since day one.

We are gonna get our
kids, take back our home,

and make it right.

And Pamela's never gonna see it coming.

[Grunts]

Negan!

Daryl: It's bad. I don't think
any of 'em are gonna make it.

Rosita: We need to go in now.

Ezekiel: This world is broken.

But we don't have to be.

[Walker growls]

[Breathing hard]

[Snoring]

Kang: I think Maggie has always
had this kind of steadiness to her.

I think one of Maggie's great strengths

is that she has a very clear sense of

what she thinks is right and wrong,

and I think that there is

a selflessness about her in general.

To have that kind of clarity of purpose,

I think, does give her an advantage

when she's in a really
difficult situation.

[Grunts]

[Scuffling]

Ahh!

[Scuffling]

Oh!

Wait, wait a minute. Hold on.

What's the plan here?

I'm gonna follow the
convoy wherever it goes.

And then what?

There are two of us.

What, do we knock on the door and say,

"Can we see our daughter, please?"

Do you have a better idea?

It's really fun to write
for Rosita and Gabriel.

They have this kind of
interesting relationship.

Let's split up. We'll cover more ground.

No way. I'm not leaving you.

Almost, like, unexpected
love story that they had,

and then they broke up,

but they continue to
work together really well.

It's really fun to
see them in this scene

where they're in conflict.

You need to rest.

We're out of here.

Don't do that.

Do what?

t*rture yourself. What good does it do?

You have, like, this really fun bond

that we enjoy kind of exploring further.

Is that a train?

That's a train.

[Leaves rustle]

[Growling]

I think for our
characters, children Walkers

are particularly heartbreaking.

From the very first
episode, from the pilot,

there is this reminder that
zombies are not just monsters.

There is a tragic story
behind every zombie.

Particularly when you
see children Walkers,

there's this duality of, like,

"Look at this horrible monster,"

and yet, this was somebody's child.

And I think for Maggie particularly,

as she's looking for her son,

it's like this child
Walker is haunting her,

and she ha a hard time k*lling it

because all those feelings of, like,

"This was somebody's child" are
just holding her back from what

she would normally do without
even giving it a thought.

[Growling]

They just ripped him away from me.

I wasn't strong enough.

We really wanted to have
a Carol and Maggie scene,

because a lot of times,
they are sort of like

their own leads in separate storylines.

I hate not knowing.

It's worse.

I think it's interesting when two people

like Carol and Maggie, who
have kind of different ways

of dealing with problems,
different worldviews,

different kind of philosophies
of leadership sometimes,

but in spite of all those differences,

they are still family.

They love each other, trust each other,

and care for each other deeply.

This is not on you.

You are just one person.

Doesn't matter.

It's on me.

We really feel like the
story is about this family

that they've built over time.

Well, you're not alone anymore.

We're gonna make it right.

Don't turn around.

We loved the idea of really
putting Negan and Ezekiel

together for the first
time in a very long time.

What do you want?

I want to get on the same page.

Ezekiel really hasn't had
much of a reckoning with Negan,

and Negan and his Saviors
k*lled the majority of

Ezekiel's Kingdom group.

I stayed away from you for years

for a reason.

Well, you need to shelve that sh*t.

Sh...

When he looks at Negan, he sees somebody

who has gotten to skate by.

That sh*t, I have not forgotten.

Why does he get to just live his life,

after everything that he did?

And for the sh*t I've
done, I probably deserve

to be in a place like this.

It fits.

We have got to put our sh*t
aside and work together.

This is just kind of
the start of a little bit

of an arc for them, but I
do think that for Ezekiel,

he deserves to express his anger.

Horrible things happened to
him at the hands of the Saviors,

and he's not over it.

Back to work!

No, you. Back to work.

You with me?

I'm with you.

For now.

Learning that their
old home of Alexandria

has just been taken over by
the Commonwealth completely

and turned into a hard labor facility,

it brings a personal level of just,

"Well, we have to fix
this situation" to it.

To add insult to injury,

they did this to our home that
they were helping us rebuild.

For them, it definitely just kind of

lights a fire under them
to fight that much harder.

Milton has underestimated
us since day one.

We are gonna get our kids,

take back our home,

and make it right.

And Pamela is never gonna see it coming.
