there's a launch
of lunar proportions.

The eagerly-awaited third series of
Dr Who will shortly be unveiled
to the world.

With a galaxy of celebrity fans,
tonight's screening
is a star-studded event.

The nation's press has
gathered in force.

They're here to see
the show's newest time-traveller,
Freema Agyeman.

Tonight is the big launch.

It's the launch of series three

and we're showing
episodes one and two.

This is Freema's night.

It's a big, big launch for her.

We're so proud of her
and we want people to see her.

Martha's story and that's...

I think that's how the show
has always worked.

It's the point of view of
the human character

that allows the audience in.

DOOR CREAKS OPEN

Oh, my God! You can travel in time!

We're onto our third series now,
and people are watching,

so you can't relax!

We have a successful show
on our hands

and we want to keep it that way.

Every year at this time, you start to
feel the weight of expectation.

So, you know, it's an exciting time.

Run!

It's very much the attitude of
more of the same, but better.

It's a great big rattling adventure.

why don't you see what you can find?

Martha is the new companion and
I am playing Martha who is there

on the Tardis with the Doctor!
It's all a bit crazy.

This is the dream job.
It's brilliant and it's surreal.

What are you?

I'm the Doctor.

Me too, if I ever pass my exams!

Martha seems to have a spark
and a life about her

that chimes with the Doctor's own.

That's something which is always
going to appeal to him.

You're kidding me!

The whole focus of the episode is
Martha's mad first day
with the Doctor.

And throwing everything at her
and seeing how she survived.

It's really all about her.

She came to my show

♪ Just to hear about my day. ♪

Filming began back
in August and today,

Freema's taking her first tentative
steps in Martha Jones's shoes.

We're here in Pontypridd filming
some of the interiors
of what will be our hospital

that forms the setting
for episode one.

After months of preparation,

her time has finally come.

One, take one.

And...action!

Hippocrates himself
expounded on the virtues of salt.

Recommended the inhalation of steam
from sea water.

LIFT BELL DINGS

Martha may have nerves of steel...

..but just how well is Freema coping
with this epic new adventure?

'It is quite a big deal'

to walk onto a set like that.

However, I think she was nervous,

but I think she was excited.

'Last night, I wobbled.'

I was in my new flat, in Cardiff,

and I sat there, with the script
on my lap and just went,

"Oh my God!"

I'm fine now.
I woke up going, "Woo!"

Ten, take two.

And...action.

It wasn't very clever, running
around outside, was it? Sorry?

It's really just finding a character
you can identify with.

'A character you can care for

'and a character who will
ultimately complete the Doctor.'

We could have have an alien,
we could have had anything

but actually what you want
is our point of view.

She's fun, she's feisty,
but above all, she's fearless.

We are pleased to introduce
Miss Martha Jones.

♪ "Have you met Miss Jones?"

♪ Someone said as we shook hands

♪ She was just Miss Jones

♪ To me. ♪

For this new series, Dr Who is
keeping up with the Joneses,

a larger than life family who have
a lot to say for themselves.

No, I did not...
As if! You look healthy!

Don't make it worse. Come off it!

We do see Martha as...
She's a peacemaker in her family.

It's a family in crisis.

..your father
making a fool of himself in private.

But this is Leo's st.
Everyone will be there,

and the family is going
to look ridiculous.

But tonight, on-screen relations
are somewhat strained.

They hate me,
that's why I'm over here on my own!

LAUGHTER

I've come to my son's st birthday,
it's a family occasion,

and he brings the
blonde child with him.

I'm not staying to be insulted.
She didn't mean it, sweetheart.

She said you look healthy.

I said orange.That woman is disrespecting me.

She's never liked me. Can't think

Then she has a go at Martha,
accusing her of making it all up.

Mum, I don't mind. Just leave it.

We find Martha
storming out of a family row,
a huge public row in the street.

She literally
walks from that to a better life.

He's come back,
he's waiting for her and takes her
to something extraordinary.

I went to the moon today.

Bit more peaceful than down here.

Who could
not follow in those footsteps?

The Doctor is not only
joined by a new companion,

but also a new thr*at.

That's aliens.

Real, proper aliens.

Judoon.

The Judoon are great big,
unsubtle, blundering monsters.

Cut off all suspects.

They've got g*ns...

Ah!

..they've got leather skirts,

they write on your hand and k*ll you
if you smash a vase over their head.

Witness crime.

Sentence - execution.

Arghh!

Case closed.

I thought they were beautiful in a
fascinating way, apart from when...

we did a scene where they had to
charge towards me down the corridor.

Ah!

No acting necessary.

Now, listen.

I know who you're looking for,
this woman, calls herself Florence.

I was a little bit scared!

And...action!

The scanner shouldn't do that,
she's done something.

ELECTRICAL BEEPING

Scan detects lethal acceleration
of mono-magnetic pulse.

Do something, stop it!

Our jurisdiction has ended.

But you can't just leave it,
what's it gonna do?

All units withdraw.

On set, the Time Lord
and the Tardis are together again.

And the Dr Who team
are preparing for the moment
Martha Jones's life changes forever.

You come forward.

It's gone, you know,Yeah.

I've got my hand in that sh*t.

It is a great big expl*sive episode,
with spaceships and monsters,

that all comes down to
a really quiet and intimate
five minutes in an alleyway.

You never even told me who you are.

The Doctor. What sort of species?

It's not every day I get to ask
that. I'm a Time Lord.

That's a very plain alleyway
in real life, but we've dressed
the hell out of it.

Take a look.

It's vibrant, it's colourful, it's
gorgeous, and the Tardis stands there
like a gateway to another world.

There's a lovely moment
where she says...

It's bigger on the inside!Is it? I hadn't noticed.

David said,
"How would it be if I did that?

"Cos they all say that
when they come in.

"How would it be if
I was to mime that?"

We did it once and it's brilliant.

Whereas Rose, I think, was looking
for an escape, I don't think Martha
is. Martha stumbles across this

and is completely bemused by it.

But ends up being very excited by it
and enthused by it.

Well, there's not much room.
We'd be a bit intimate.

She kind of thinks, "Oh, he's asking
me to go away with him. He fancies
me." That's her thinking.

The fact that he brushes it off,
I think she takes as a challenge.

That was a genetic transfer!

I think she thinks
that he's taken a shine to her.

And if you will wear a tight suit...

Now, don't! And then, travel all the
way across the universe just to ask
me on a date... Stop it.

The story for Martha is unrequited
love. I think far more people in life

feel like Martha
than they do like Rose.

Rose met the most fantastic man in
the universe who thought she was the
most fantastic woman in the universe.

That doesn't really happen often.
I'm not remotely interested.

Good.

Back in the central London
screening,

it's a tense affair for
the producers as they wait for
the reaction to the new series.

I think it was good.
I'm biased, obviously.

She was brilliant.
Done a fantastic job.

I was very impressed.

They've been given great tools to
work with. The scripts are superb.

I came out halfway through and
Jo Whiley was there with her kids,
cos her kids were terrified.

My kids were too scared. But it
looked amazing. Very exciting.

I'm so proud of what we've done and
I'm pleased with what I've done, so
I'm ready for the fans to enjoy it.

Hopefully, it'll be cool.

I think she's great. He's gonna be
so upset that he was asleep!

Welcome aboard, Martha Jones.
And hold tight,
because it's gonna be a bumpy ride.

I'm really excited
by the third series.
