Drew Where do you think you're going? I got a life outside the store, you know.

Besides, my shift's over.

That's your regular shift.

You still got overtime to do.

Overtime? Oh, come on, Warren.

Not again.

The store's practically empty.

Other kids beg for overtime.

Maybe I should hire one of them.

[Door chime rings]

[Gasps]

Sorry, hon.

We're all out of your size.

Hey, you can't just come-- all right, it's yours.

All of it! [Gasps]

Aah! Aah! [Whimpers]

Stay here.

You'll be safe.

Oof.

Why are you doing this to me? Because you don't respect the kids who work for you.

That's it? Because of some loser kids? You gotta be crazy! Aah! Like I had to say it.

Look, look, I'm sorry, ok? I'm sorry! Too late.

You should have respected the people you didn't fear.

Aaahh! Batman! Payback, right? Yeah.

Your new ally.

Ally? What are you talking about? I do the same thing you do.

Sorry, pal.

Not even close.

If you're not with me, then you're the enemy, too.

[Whimpering]

Whoa.

I want one.

Aah! Look at this place.

You couldn't fight the guy outside? This payback guy thinks he's some sort of vigilante, standing up for kids.

The good news is I finally met him face to face.

Bruce Wayne: But the bad news is you didn't stop him.

I couldn't.

I had the manager and drew to worry about.

Drew? He's a kid from my school.

Really.

Bruce: Another student at your school was also connected to payback-- the son of the man who was att*cked last week.

And the 2 boys have something else in common.

They're both patients at the Gotham youth counseling center.

Know anything about it? What's there to know? Sometimes people just need a place to talk out their problems.

Some people, anyway.

Is anyone else from the center connected to payback? I don't know.

I can't get into their computer.

It's not on the net.

Great.

So much for that lead.

You know, we did do detective work before there was a net.

Girl: He hasn't called me in a week.

Boy: You're better off without him.

How can you say that? Do-Wayne cheated on you, trina.

Lied to you, too.

Dwayne loves me.

Will you say something? How about we let trina work things out at her own speed? Now, before time runs out, we have a new member to meet.

Terry mcginnis.

Hey.

How ya doin'? Hi.

Terry, why don't you tell us about yourself? Uh, what do you want to know, Dr.

Stanton? Well, for starters, what brings you here? Nothin' special.

So everything's perfect in your life? Maybe you don't belong here at the center.

No, no, I do.

Really.

What's your problem, then? I guess you could say my problem's not a "what.

" It's a "who.

" It sounds to me like Mr.

Wayne really does respect you, but that he has a hard time showing it.

Why do you think that is? Maybe some trauma in his past.

I don't know.

But if he keeps getting on your nerves, quit.

It's only an after-school job.

Actually, it's a little more than that.

Man: Whoa! Close one! [Boy laughs]

So you got your own virtual arcade, huh? This is just one of Howard's hobbies.

He does all our video work.

He's pretty much of a genius.

And here's the other resident genius-- my son Kenny.

Dad, you wanna play? Can't right now, but say hello to Terry mcginnis.

He's new here.

Hi.

And this is Howard Lewis, Terry.

Mcginnis.

Kenny: Maybe we can play tonight? Or go to a movie? I'd love to, but-- but you gotta work late.

You always say that.

Kenny, there are so many kids with problems.

Big problems.

I wouldn't be much of a doctor if I didn't do everything I could to help them.

Nurse: Dr.

Stanton.

There's a young lady down in reception says she needs to see you right away.

An emergency.

Did you get her name? Maxine Gibson.

She's not a patient, but if it's an emergency You'll have to see yourself out, Terry.

Max's timing was perfect.

I'm in Stanton's office right now.

I'm starting the download.

Ugh! [Terry groans]

Welcome back.

What happened? Looks like you fainted.

Anything like this ever happen before? Uh-uh.

Howard found you on the floor.

I was looking for Dr.

s.

Lucky for me.

Terry, one thing-- what were you doing in here? I--I was coming down the hall, and I started to feel dizzy.

I figured there'd be a couch in here.

Dizzy, huh? First day jitters, maybe? Maybe.

Ow! Why weren't you watching your back? I was too busy watching my front.

Am I supposed to have eyes everywhere? Only if you want to live to a ripe old age.

You don't make it sound too inviting.

Ow! I severed the computer link when I lost contact with you.

Did you get all the files? Uh-huh.

And every one of payback's att*cks is linked to kids at the center.

Each victim was a patient's parent, teacher, boss.

The people kids gripe about.

So, payback's attacking whoever gets ratted on in that room.

But these patients aren't all in one group.

So our suspect has to be someone who has access to every session.

I'm so ahead of you.

Bring up a guy named Howard Lewis.

The center keeps vid-disks of the sessions, and this guy's the librarian.

He's got the access.

But what about a motive? He acts like a kid himself.

Maybe he's decided to be their protector.

Why rule out Dr.

Stanton? He's got access, too.

You taught me to follow my gut.

Be careful.

Your gut's still young.

It looks like Lewis is the one who made those creepy sculptures at the center.

Bruce Wayne: Well, that should be enough for a conviction.

He's got the laser, too.

Even still warm.

Now do you believe me? It's over, payback.

Who? Don't bother.

I've seen that laser close enough to singe my suit.

The laser? I cut my sculptures with it.

That's all.

Save it for the cops.

Bruce Wayne: Terry! Stop.

What? Don't tell me you're buying this.

He's telling the truth.

Is there a vid-screen around there? Yeah, but-- turn it on.

Any channel.

Payback.

UmSorry? [Sirens]

Aah! Aah! Aah! Aah! Aah! Dwayne, do something! Yeah, do-Wayne.

Protect your girlfriend.

Or do you care as little about her as you did the last one? Aah! Aah! Aah! Aah! Aah! I know what you're doing, and you're nuts.

You think those kids want you to hurt these people? You don't know anything about kids! I know how kids think! This time, payback was after a kid who was two-timing one of the girls in the group.

He got away again.

You might've gotten there in time if you hadn't jumped the g*n with Lewis.

I know.

Do you? You injured an innocent man.

That's inexcusable.

And I'm sorry, ok? But I got something more important to do right now.

And what might that be? Stanton.

If payback's not Lewis, Stanton's gotta be the one.

Maybe he is, maybe he isn't.

But from now on, we're handling it my way.

Which means taking our time and getting it right.

He's never satisfied with anything I do.

It's like he thinks he's the only one in the whole world who could ever do this job right.

Just feel like I'm never gonna be good enough for him.

Terry, why don't you just find another job? That'd be too easy.

He should confront the old man tonight.

You're probably right.

Except tonight he's gonna be at that big party at the new hotel.

No excuses, Terry.

You can't put it off.

Hey, maybe if he gets away from that house for a night, it'll mellow him out a little.

That old guy? From what you've told us, he'll never mellow out.

You don't know the half-- look, I don't wanna talk about this anymore, ok? Man: Gotham's elite are gathering tonight to celebrate the opening of the spectacular new vreeland marquis hotel.

Prominent on the guest list is billionaire Bruce Wayne, a longtime friend of the vreeland family who will be making a rare public appearance.

What's going on? What is it? What happened? Are you all right? Woman: Aah! I'm here for him.

The rest of you can go.

Who is that man? [Chattering]

You're a mean old man, you know that? Mm-hmm.

And what are you? Your worst nightmare.

You have no idea what my nightmares are like.

Aah! Unh.

You ok? What kept you? I figured he'd at least wait till after the hors d'ouevres.

Unh.

Aah! Aaah! Unh.

[Groaning]

It's Stanton's son.

He was always hanging around with Lewis.

And he had access to the vid-disks, too.

[Sobbing]

This is all my fault.

I was always so busy.

I kept dumping him on Lewis.

He must've thought if he solved my patient's problems, I'd have more time for him.

I'm so sorry.

Go to your son.

You called it.

I put down the bait like you said, and payback took it.

Only it wasn't who I thought it would be.

I was wrong.

Twice.

Learn from it.

That's all you can do.

By the way, exactly what did you say in that group to get payback so mad at me? You must've given quite a convincing performance.

Who said anything about performing?
