Season 04 Episode 09

Episode Title:
"Where the Rubber Meets the Road"

Jeff Gordon can stay
home tonight, folks.

Virgil "Speed Demon" Hawkins
is burning up the track

but Richie
"Crash Test Dummy" Foley

is one tough competitor.

Oh! Ho ho!
Friends, this is not great.

Oh, dude, come on.

Your controller's
like brand new.

You called the other one.

- That's Sharon.
- I didn't hook up a tester.

I just said, "That one".
This thing's a dud.

Hey, Adam, I got a proposition.

You like my sister.
I like your Game Station 2.

Let's do some business.

Quit playing, Virgil.
I'm upstairs, baby.

Quit playing?

Hey, what I lack in maturity

I make up for in immaturity.

Ready, Adam?

Whoa! Sharon!

That dress is awesome.

Dude! Yeah, we Hawkins'
always clean up nice.

Yeah, you should
try it sometime.

Let's go, someplace far away
from little brother.

You guys can stay here
as long as you like.

Just ember to clean up
before you leave.

- Start game?
- No, I'm on strike.

For the good controller? Dang!

Maybe I'll just
read a magazine or..

Well, I would
if I could find one.

Man, I don't even see a book.

I'll just read some
of this here fan mail

while I wait for you
to come to your senses.

Oh. None if it's opened.
Aw, no biggie.

Stretch Underarmstrong's
a popular guy.

You sure none of
that mail was opened?

Sealed tight
as far as I could tell.

You'd think
he'd read some of it.

What a fun place.

What're you having?

I'll have whatever
you're ordering.

Aww, that's so sweet
the way you do that.

'It's because
you have such good taste.'

Boom

'What is it, Mr. Alva?'

A direct att*ck
to the security main frame.

Deploy the defense bots
and electrify the corridors.

Yes, sir.

Stop that creature!

Crash

Pew pew pew

bam

clank

pew pew pew

bam bam

Double pay for whoever
brings me his head.

To Sharon Hawkins

who everyday makes me
feel like a superhero.

Adam, you make corny stuff
seem so right.

Crash

What's that?

'Hey, that's Alva Industries.'

pew pew pew

- 'What's that?'
- 'It's unbelievable.'

Sharon, what's it say
at the bottom of the screen?

- Huh?
- Uh..

There's a glare from this angle.
What does it say?

"Live from Alva
Industries complex

massive destruction
by unidentified bang baby."

- I have to go. I'm need.
- Wow.

Corny, but I like it.

'Oh.'

You better run

'cause I'm Tarmac

the living chunk
of the biggest, baddest road

that you'll ever drive on

and the road is hard.

Is that the fusion engine
behind you?

No, it's a garbage disposal.

You making fun of me, Alva?

The security in your place stinks.

You should have
hired a bouncer.

Now there's an entrance line
if I ever heard one.

You, outta here.

You freak!

I'm gonna, I'm gonna..

You're gonna cool off, smokey.

Get him out of here.

We don't work for you, Alva.

We just like bagging bad guys.

Looks like Asphalt Man's
a tough road to hoe.

Hey! The name's Tarmac!

What kind of a name
is Thumbtack?

No, no, man, he said,
"Knickknack."

- 'Fat Back?'
- 'I think it was Rat Pack.'

Oh, Short Stack.

I'll pave you alive!

I got him.

Ooh, uh..

Getting hot in here.

Got what I came for.

You can still stop him.

Push the override
button on that console.

All the exits
in the building will shut.

Hurry!

Crash

This one!

I see you, Throwback!

You elastic buffoon!

Do you realize what
your hesitation has cost me?

- What did Tarmac take?
- A fusion engine.

A fusion engine?
What's it do?

It generates power.

Power enough
to wipe out the city.

Ah, Mr. Trapper,
our delivery boy is here.

Delivery boy?

Hey! That isn't
a can of beans, you dolt!

I don't think he knows
what dolt means.

I don't need your
cute comments.

Just give me my money!

Two, four, six.

Why, look, Mr. Specs.
It can count.

Don't burn it all in one place.

What is that thing, anyway?

You wouldn't understand.

Think of it as a big boom box

with an extra-big boom.

So, the fusion engine's
a nuclear reactor?

A very compact, efficient one.

A source of endless energy.

But it's highly experimental.

- Meaning unstable.
- Well, yes.

In the wrong hands,
it could start a chain reaction

that would level
several square miles.

You built this thing
in the middle of a city?

- I have a license.
- Never mind that.

We need to find the fusion
engine and shut it down.

Well, Dr. Evil, any ideas how?

Carefully!

I've downloaded the entire
shutdown procedure onto these.

That's the button you push
to read the instructions.

'Thanks.'

We'll call you when
we find something.

Hey, what kind of
satellites can track a lit fusion engine.

Way ahead of you,
I've got backpack

scanning a list
of research satellites

for anomalous
electromagnetic data.

Good job.

Will you quit looking so grim.

This is all because
Rubber band Man

couldn't push a simple button.

Yeah. And I'm thinking
I know why.

Say, Tarmac! Spot me a few
bucks for some nachos.

Ah, what the heck..

I just made a big score

'I lifted that fusion
engine from Alva.'

No! What'd you get?

A cool thousand bucks.

Ain't you seen the news,
Alva's offering a million

to return that thing,
asphalt-for-brains.

Uh. No, no, no, wait! Wait!

I'll give you a buck
to go rob Fort Knox for me.

H... hey! Whoa.

'Remind me never to
hire you to DJ a dance party.'

Not in the mood, Static.
You find the engine?

'Not yet.
Let's talk about you.'

Look at this.
It's a review of your new CD.

I don't read my reviews.

"Don't" or "Can't"?

Look, I'm dyslexic, alright.

They put me in
a special learning program.

- They showed me techniques.
- Like what?

A lot of stuff,
you change words into

something you can feel
instead of look at

but it takes patience.

I could never sit
still as a kid.

So you dropped out
of the program.

I felt dumb.

Don't tell anybody
about this, okay?

You're not dumb.

Look what you've
made of yourself.

A hero, a famous musician, but..

But I messed up.

I was gonna say,
but you can't give in.

You said you can read
it just takes some work.

Do the work.

'Uh, everything alright here?

- 'Yeah, great.'
- What've you got?

Backpack's found
a huge energy reading

coming from Westwood flats.

Sweet!

One, two, there.
- Push Mr. - Trapper.

- Funny
- What's that?

We stymied Alva's state
of the art security system

with a neanderthal.

Your security
ain't much better.

This neanderthal
wants a piece of the pie.

A big one,
or I'm taking the engine back

and collecting Alva's
million dollars.

He wants in, Mr. Specs.

He wants in, Mr. Trapper.

Over here, partner.

A million is peanuts
compared to what we'll make.

The fusion engine
that you secured for us

will power our brainchild,
the disaster matrix.

I named it.

We can use it to channel
enormous energies

to any section of the city,
reducing it to rubble.

Or we can derail trains,
cr*ck airport runways.

We'll hold all of
Dakota for ransom.

We'll make millions.

But you're not going
to see another nickel.

We're gonna blast you
to tarnation.

Oh, extra points
for that one, Mr. Trapper.

You hit the fusion engine.

He moved!

Nothing in plain sight
but it's gotta be here.

Tarmac could've taken
the engine into

any one of these old tenements.

I'll check this one.

Whoa! Why'd he go inside?

It says "condemned"
and "dangerous".

Nobody would be in there.

Wh-what's happening?

We must be close to the engine.

'Adam! Over here.'

Are you nuts, if you'd stopped
to read the sign

you would have known Tarmac
wouldn't be in there.

My fault. Sorry, Gear.

Forget it.

Backpack figured out
where those jolts came from.

Thanks for not saying anything.

When are you gonna
say something?

Unplug everything, Mr. Specs.

I can't hold this
goon much longer.

I'm moving as fast as I can.

Specs and Trapper.
I should've known.

Contain 22-1, mark 7.

'Contain 17-2, mark 12.'

Voice command? Awesome.

Hey, backpack,
jam anything in the room

plotting coordinates.

I should blast your butt.
But that's ungentlemanly.

Eh, who am I kidding!

Yaahah Mr. Trapper!

Coming, Mr. Specs.

Ugh..

Zap the goggles,
now the gloves, and..

Hey, it's two-for-one day.

Major damage
to magnetic containment field.

- Two minutes to lockdown.
- Uh-oh.

- That should hold 'em.
- Hey, where's Rubber band Man?

Our delivery boy took
his package back

and old stretch,
he went after him.

Backpack's detecting
an energy leak.

Static, we're looking
at a meltdown

in less than two minutes.

Gotta make this bigger.
Do the work, Adam.

Number one, fleep... flip!

Sweeches..

Switches!

In s-sequence

One minute and counting.

Shut up!

Gear, we need a location.

Got it. The docks.

Core!

Remove oval magnetic core.

Let's hope Rubber band Man
gets there

in time to shut it down.

He's got the instructions
on him right?

Static?

Rotate... aluminum... collar.

Oh, man! What's this?

Caa... Ca.. Uhh!

Sixteen letters.
Too long for clockwise.

It's gotta say
counter-clockwise.

Shutdown complete.

Don't worry, I've got
the shutdown procedure.

Here. And don't forget step 3.

- How'd you?
- I did the work.

You know, Rubber band Man
would never have been

able to read without
the classes he took in school

- Aah!
- And I'm not done yet.

See, you can have
really good language skills

but still have trouble
recognizing graphic symbols.

He means letters.

For instance,
sometimes I can't tell

the letter B from
the letter D.

You did that with mirrors.

Nope. My brain
perceives space differently.

So, to a dyslexic,
"now" can look like "won".

Or something else entirely.

Twenty-five million Americans

have some kind
of reading difficulty.

Dyslexia's the most common.

It doesn't have to
hold you back.

Some of the world's most
accomplished people

like George Washington,
Thomas Edison

and Albert Einstein
had dyslexia.

Most schools have programs
for dyslexics.

Or they can tell you
where to find help.

- Just ask a teacher.
- Or a parent.

Everyone can learn to read.
