OVAx01 - Surely, Someday, You Will Understand Love

Post by bunniefuu »

The first time I ever saw her, it was like looking at a doll.

She certainly didn't look like someone who could write the kind of letter

that Ilma needed.

Yes.

Ilma.

Good work tonight, Aldo.

Is now a good time?

Sure.

There's someone I'd like to introduce you to.

Come in.

I am pleased to make your acquaintance.

If it is your wish, I will travel anywhere to meet your request.

Auto Memory Doll, Violet Evergarden, at your service.

You're the one everyone's talking about, right?

Talking about?

One of my acquaintances in the Postal Association recommended you.

Who might that have been?

Miss Ilma.

Flowers and a message from Earl Brady.

Flowers and a photograph from General Munter.

A word about your interview after this?

Aldo!

Please tell the girl to come to my house tomorrow.

Understood.

Ilma.

Do you have a moment to talk later?

That again?

Let's not talk about it.

Sorry about yesterday.

Please, have a seat.

Excuse me.

By the way, did you listen to my singing yesterday?

Yes. It was my first time seeing an opera.

But your voice was deeply moving.

Really?

But...

the lyrics were antiquated,

so it was difficult to understand.

What exactly was your song about?

Well...

Violet.

Let's get to business.

Let us begin with the important information.

First, please tell me the name of the recipient.

The sender is Miss Ilma Felice, correct?

I'm not sending it in my name.

Use the name Marietta.

A pseudonym?

Oh, no, certainly not.

And the recipient is Marietta's lover.

His name is Modesto.

He went off to w*r...

And...

Has yet to return.

Understood.

To Mr. Modesto.

What is his surname?

What is his address?

It doesn't matter.

It's the content that counts.

Understood.

In that case, let us move on to the body of the letter.

Looking forward to working with you.

Yes, likewise.

Shall we start on the body?

Yes, that's right.

You think something up.

Thinking of Modesto, who went to w*r and hasn't returned.

A love letter from his lover Marietta.

But--

Auto Memory Doll.

Writing this letter is your job.

Understood.

I have finished.

Read it.

"My Dearest Modesto,

I currently await your return from outside the battle zone.

I am unsure of your safety.

Please write as soon as possible.

From Marietta."

What's with...

the m*llitary style writing?

You asked me to come up with something by myself.

Are you unsatisfied with my work?

A love letter, that when read,

makes every woman yearn

and every man's heart pound.

That's what I was looking for.

Yearn? Heart pound?

That's right.

Write it again.

"Hugo...

I will love you for the rest of my life,

even in the depths of my soul.

The memory of your sweet, paralyzing voice lingers,

making me tremble

and just barely keeping me hanging on."

What era is this love letter from?

Too old-fashioned!

I want something modern. Something with a story.

A story?

"I just love you so...

so...

so...

so...

So much. So much--"

That's too much.

Modern people would be turned off by this.

Write it again and make it feel modern.

Modern?

We're back.

What are you doing?

Violet.

Aren't you writing a love letter on behalf of that opera singer?

Yes.

If you've got gossip, you better share!

Iris.

I'm only joking.

Are you okay?

Is something the matter?

The customer...

is requesting something...

that is too difficult.

This is the first time I've ever heard you complain.

Is it really such a difficult love letter?

She says she wants a letter that

makes all women yearn and all men's hearts pound.

What the heck does that mean?

That does seem difficult.

Do you two know how to write such a letter?

Nope.

Well, hello there, Violet.

Aldo, it's been a while.

I hear Ilma's request has proven difficult.

Yes.

No matter how I write the letter, she is not pleased.

Well, of course Ilma's new opera depends on this.

New opera?

What does that have to do with the letter?

It's not a letter, it's song lyrics.

It's the lyrics to the aria sung at the climax of her new opera.

See? This song.

What?

She wants you to write lyrics?

According to Aldo, that was the intention all along.

How strange...

You didn't realize that when you took the job on?

It was a request from the Postal Association

so I was convinced it was letter writing.

Oh, in this scene, the heroine reads out the love letter she wrote.

Ah, I see.

So the request for a love letter is technically correct.

So what are you going to do?

While I did accept this job...

the work is not in my job description.

Well, in that case, it's easy, isn't it?

What is?

It doesn't have to be a letter.

Together we can write up some amazing lyrics!

It's not as simple as just saying it.

We'll be fine.

Just look at how many excellent dolls we have here!

Right?

And I mean, I'm not too shabby at writing poetry myself...

Oh, please.

Would that be...

actually possible?

You never know until you try. Right?

Well, I tried...

It's a haiku...

Is that okay?

"As I await you

The wind blowing through the wharf

Lonely and chilly"

Bit short, no?

Not sure it would work as lyrics.

My turn! Pick me!

Behold, my masterpiece!

"I'm in hell with no hope

Without you I have no future"

What the heck is this?

It's the cries of my soul!

Really echoes in the heart, right?

What's that supposed to mean? You got something to say?

Compared with what you guys wrote--

I'll take this, too.

See? She gets it.

-You sure? -Yes.

Thanks to all of you for the lyrics.

Violet, are you sure these are okay?

Yes.

I have received many weapons.

Aldo.

It's time...

to give this up.

I know that!

But...

I'm not the only one being unreasonable.

There are so many.

Did you write all these yourself?

No.

The people at the Postal Service helped.

Looking at these,

I have a hard time believing Ilma will accept them.

And anyway,

the request was that you write it, was it not?

Yes. However, I am a Doll.

My job is not to write lyrics.

Do you...

Have a minute?

Wrong! Do it again!

I want to sing this section slower.

As quiet as possible, but with presence.

Got it?

She looks...

Different, right?

Yes.

She looks too normal.

She's wearing the everyday clothes worn by average people these days.

Isn't opera...

something from an era past?

Classic, you might say?

Is that her rehearsal outfit?

No.

That is the costume for her next show.

Ilma was the one who said

she wanted her next production to a new one.

She said she wanted to create a production that speaks to the people of today.

The w*r is over, and we're supposed to be at peace.

But are people really happy?

We're beginning a new era!

Each and every one of us!

The w*r left many people with scars.

Many people's hearts remain frozen, even now.

They don't feel like a new era has come,

and they haven't been able to move forward.

I wrote this story at the behest of Ilma.

Ilma herself is the model for the heroine.

I wrote all the songs in close collaboration with Ilma.

Neither she nor I could find the right words,

the right lyrics,

for the climax scene where the heroine reads the letter she wrote to her lover.

No matter what we tried, nothing seemed to fit.

And then we started to think,

if we're looking for a love letter, why ask for a Doll's help?

When I asked a friend of mine at the Postal Association,

your name came up.

I think her name was Rhodanse.

I hope you become an optimal Doll.

Instructor Rhodanse...

The Instructor recommended me?

Yes. Once she heard what kind of lyrics Ilma needed,

she told us your name.

It's a very difficult request,

but I know one Doll who might be able to handle it.

She may be able to write a love letter

that resonates with the people of today, she said.

Won't you give it one more try?

See you later! Good job today!

You too!

Why are you following me?

I would like to understand you.

What? What are you talking about?

A good Doll takes the meanings behind the words,

the speaker's true feelings,

and lifts them up.

And that's why you're following me?

Yes.

I need to in order to accomplish my mission!

Do you never...

get tired?

During training

I've even walked over merids in full equipment.

You were in the army?

Yes.

And you made it back, huh?

Yes.

You too have someone important to you, right?

Yes.

Just being able to see that person again...

He's glad to have you back, isn't he?

I do not know.

He was my superior.

I lost track of him in the midst of the last battle.

What he is doing,

where is he at...

I have not been told.

I apologize.

You can follow me.

This way.

This is the first place

I came with him... with Hugo.

Is he the one who went off to w*r and never came back?

Yes.

My lover.

He was Aldo's son.

Aldo's...?

Yes.

Hugo and I came here on the day he left for the w*r as well.

I promise...

Promise me you'll come home.

Yes.

I'll come back.

I promise.

I'll come back.

I...

said something terrible to Aldo.

Even though I know he's suffering, too.

Even I know Hugo won't be coming home.

But...

I couldn't possibly give up on him so easily.

My darling!

You made it!

I'm so glad...

you made it.

Well, I guess we're here.

Miss Ilma, I think I have come to understand you

just a little.

But I don't know if I'll be able to write.

If you want to know me better,

I can show you my letters.

The letters I wrote him.

Though they all came back for lack of address.

But even if I show you,

you won't be able to lift me up.

The letter I'm looking for isn't like that.

A letter that makes all women yearn

and all men's hearts b*at faster, right?

Violet, thanks for listening.

It was nice not to be alone.

Violet!

Roland.

I heard from Benedict that you've taken on a difficult job.

Yes.

Oh, really?

How can I, who knows nothing of love,

write words of love?

When you're done with work today, can I have a bit of your time?

I don't know much about difficult things,

but I know that letters go where they're addressed.

If there is no address, they're returned to the sender.

Do you understand?

I am aware, as I too am employed at a postal company.

But w*r is terrible

and doesn't make distinctions.

We're here.

This is...

This is a postal warehouse that was under m*llitary control.

It is no longer in use.

These letters are...

Not just those.

All the letters in here

have lost their senders and their receivers.

"Love.

I love you."

I love you.

I love you!

My dearest love.

With love.

From your beloved wife.

Your love is...

always in my heart.

Though these letters

are full of the love and feelings of the people who wrote them ,

there is no one to receive the feelings.

If we had an airshow, we could drop them from the sky.

These people...

have embedded their love in letters, haven't they?

Yes, you're right.

All the letters I wrote him

came back to me for lack of address.

The truth is, my parents d*ed.

They couldn't find any trace of my parents.

From the bottom of my heart...

I have re-written it.

But maybe this is also wrong.

Maybe I just lifted up your heart, Miss Ilma.

That may be.

But...

this is what I wanted.

Violet.

Well written.

I'm surprised.

Sorry to say,

but the first time I met you I wouldn't have thought

you could write this.

Myself as well. I also did not think I could.

Violet!

Thank you.
