Huh. How do eyes see? That's a good question.

Hey! I got it! I know where we can find the answer!

Yeah, man. It's, like, totally givin' me the heebie-jeebies and stuff.

-Bing, why are we in the woods? -To see the bats, of course.

Bats? And how are bats supposed to help us understand how eyes see?

Bats fly around in the dark, so they must be able to see

really, really, really, really well!

-Right? -[wings flapping]

[sinister laughter]

[all scream]

[laughing] My eyes ain't bad, StoryBots,

but I can't see in the dark any better than you can.

I just generate ultrasonic frequencies

and analyze the resulting patterns of reflection to echo-locate.

[Bang] Oh. Well, he wasn't very helpful.

Uh, guys, now what are we gonna do?

-[owl hooting] -[all gasp]

[gasps] Guys! We can see again!

And we couldn't see when we were in the woods.

Oh! We should put some lights up in the woods!

-[all] Whoa! -Beep vanished!

[Beep] I didn't vanish.

You can only see me when I'm in the light.

I think eyes must need light to see!

-[thunder crashing] -[crackling]

-[thunder crashing] -[all exclaim]

[Beep] Come on, guys, let's go!

[Bang] I hope they have warm towels!

[hinges creaking]

[whimpering] Oh... hello?

[thunder crashing]

-[all screaming] -Oh, don't be frightened.

I'm Dr. Henrietta Han Snizzle Snozzle Alavaski Baski Guggenheimer

Capillary Sama Kabuki Wow Willie Wah Whoa!

But my friends call me Pat.

-Hi, Dr. Pat. -Nice to meet you, Dr. Pat.

Oh, it's very nice to meet you as well,

but I'm very, very, very, very busy.

The storm of the century is upon us!

And, you know... the moment is here.

-Oh. We're sorry to interrupt. -Yeah.

We were just trying to learn how eyes see for a girl named Mia.

What? That's the exact field I've been studying for my invention!

Look! It's all right here!

You see, StoryBots, light is made out of waves of energy

that originate from a light source. Like a light bulb.

-Or a candle! -Or the sun!

Or lightning!

Precisely!

The light waves travel from the light source

until they bump into something.

When they do, some of the light waves get absorbed

and some of them bounce back towards the eye!

Well, what happens when the light gets inside the eye?

-Oh, that's simple! -[thunder crashes]

I apologize, StoryBots, but I must be going.

I need to finish my work before the storm passes!

Well, maybe we can help you out!

Oh, that would be stupendous.

But I must warn you, Beep, this is some really, really,

really, really, really science-y stuff we're talkin' about here.

Oh, we love science-y stuff,

- don't we? -[all agreeing]

[Bang] We love science. Yay, science!

To the Invention Room!

[whooshing, whirring]

[clattering]

[gasps] Huh?

[both laughing]

[robot laughing]

[robot powers down]

[both giggling]

[whooshing, whirring]

This way, StoryBots! Hurry! There's not much time!

-[gasps] -Whoa!

Behold my creation!

[all] Aaah!

[screaming]

It's... a robot!

Yes! It's a robot, and it's nearly complete!

Go ahead. Climb inside the pupil and I'll show you how it works!

[Dr. Pat squealing]

Pupil? What's the pupil?

It's the hole in the center of the eye.

[thunder crashing]

We must hurry. The storm is growing stronger.

[grunting]

-Whee! -Whoa!

-Aah! -Boop!

-We're in, Dr. Pat. -[Dr. Pat on speaker] Good.

The pupil is surrounded by this green circular mechanism

called the iris.

[Bo straining]

It also comes in blue and brown,

but my favorite color is green.

Unhhh!

What doesn't the iris do, Dr. Pat?

The iris opens and closes the pupil.

When it's dark, it opens the pupil to let in more light,

but when there's too much light,

it closes the pupil.

-Let me demonstrate. -[quacking sound]

[whirring, clanking]

Uh, guys?

-[whirring] -[Bo whimpering]

Aaaah!

The iris! It's closing the pupil! Hurry, Bo!

-Come on! You gotta go! -Hurry!

Guys, I don't think I'm gonna make it!

[honk]

[grunts, groans]

[gasps] Oh! S-Sorry, Bo.

[Bo cries out]

[Bo screams operatically]

-Hey, Bo. -[Bo] Ohhh...

Next we must attach the cornea.

This protects my little beauty from dust and harmful UV rays

as light enters the eye.

But what happens to the light after it passes through the pupil?

[Dr. Pat on speaker] It must be focused, of course.

This requires a blob-like mechanism called the lens.

That must be this thing!

[grunting]

-Hee hee! -[all] Whoa!

-Bing! -[whirring]

-Wow! The lens is changing shape! -[Dr. Pat] Yes, it is!

The cornea on the outside and the lens on the inside

focus the light that comes in through the pupil.

This helps the eye see objects clearly,

whether they are far away, close up,

or in between.

Whoa! The light is being projected onto this big screen.

Heh heh! Quack! Quack!

Heh heh heh. Like a duck, man.

What happens when the light hits the screen, Dr. Pat?

-[thunder crashes] -Aaah!

Sorry, but the time is here! [shrieks]

Why don't we let the robot show you the rest?

[shrieks]

[powering up]

[Dr. Pat cackling] Yes!

[continues cackling]

[screaming]

[woman vocalizing]

[Dr. Pat on speaker] StoryBots? Are you OK?

-I think so. -I'm OK, man.

-Yeah. -I'm OK.

[mechanical whirring]

Hello?

[robot] What is your bidding, creator?

[gasps]

StoryBots, we did it!

It's alive! It's alive!

This calls for a celebration!

I'll get some milk and cookies. Mwaaaaaa!

[robot] Directive confirmed. Must get milk and cookies.

No. Not you. I'll get the milk and cookies.

[mechanical whirring]

Get milk and cookies. Get milk and cookies...

No. Wait. I'll get the milk and cookies! Stop!

[thunder crashes]

[Dr. Pat] No, wait! Wait! Stop!

[robot] Get milk and cookies.

[Beep] Dr. Pat!

[robot] Get milk and cookies.

-[all] Whoa! -[robot] Get milk and cookies.

Wait! No! At least take an umbrella!

[whines]

[whooshing, whirring]

[slurping]

[both] Ahh!

Huh? Arggh.

[giggling]

Aaah! Ohh...

Aaaah!

[electrical crackling]

[both laughing]

This robot is, like, totally out of control, man!

What are we gonna do?

-[Dr. Pat] StoryBots! -Huh?

StoryBots, my calculations have deduced

that the robot cannot see where it's going.

There must be a problem with the eye.

How do we fix it?

Check the retina. It's like a big screen at the back of the eye.

Look closely.

The retina is covered with light-sensitive cells

called rods and cones.

Rods and cones. Hoo hoo!

[Dr. Pat] The rods sense light and dark,

and the cones sense color.

Are they activated?

-They look good to me, man. -OK, good.

Rods and cones convert light into electrical signals

that are sent along the optic nerve.

[static] You just have to...

[static] ...connect it!

What was that? Uh, come again?

Uh, over?

Follow the optic nerve to...

[static] ...the br--

What? Optic nerve? Follow it where?

-You're breaking up! -[static]

[gasps] Dr. Pat?

[static continues]

Dr. Pat!

Oh, I think we lost her!

It's OK. It's OK, guys.

We just gotta find the optic nerve.

Hey, guys! I found some wires behind the retina!

Check it out!

-Whoa-ho-ho! -Great work, Bing!

Let's see where they go!

-[thunder crashes] -[Bing grunting]

Huh? Well, that doesn't look good.

-[all] Whoa! -Careful!

This must be the optic nerve, man!

Well, if this is the optic nerve,

I think I found our problem!

I bet the signals aren't getting to that big robot brain thingy!

Come on, guys, we gotta reconnect that cable!

[all] Whoa!

This is, like, super-slippery, man!

And really, really high up!

♪ Boop buh-buh-bum buh-bom-bom-bom-bom-bah! ♪

Aaah! And the robot is headed for that really, really, really high cliff!

[all screaming]

Mr. Robot, ya gotta stop!

Ya just gotta stop!

[robot] Negative. Must get milk and cookies.

What are we gonna do? What are we gonna do!

Never fear! Super-mega-awesome-ultra-Bing is here!

Bing, wait!

[Bing grunting]

[grunting]

Uhhh... aaah!

Uh-oh.

Aaaah!

[all gasp]

I'm comin' for ya, Bing!

Yahh!

Gotcha!

-Oh. Hey, Bing. -Hey, little buddy.

-Hey, Bing! -Hi!

-Booop! -Hold on!

[all] Waaa...

Oh, yeah!

Yeah! Got it!

[all] Unhh!

[Bo] Huh? Aaaah!

Hurry, Bing! You have to connect the optic nerve!

Oh. Right.

[grunting]

[powering up]

[thunder crashes]

[robot] Processing visual data.

Danger! Danger! Danger!

Chance of survival: zero percent.

Adjusting trajectory.

Oh, phew! That was a close one.

[static]

[Dr. Pat on speaker] StoryBots. Come in!

[static] Can you hear me?

Dr. Pat! We did it!

Yeah! We reconnected the optic nerve!

Oh, thank goodness.

Now the electrical signals can flow from the eye to the brain.

What happens when the signals get to the brain, Dr. Pat?

The brain organizes those signals into a picture

in your mind.

[all] Wow!

[robot] The stars look beautiful tonight.

They sure do, robot man... they sure do.

[Dr. Pat] Thank you, StoryBots. Thank you so, so much.

Well, it looks like we got our answer, guys.

Thanks, Dr. Pat.

[all talking at once]

-[Beep] Bye! -[Bo] Good luck with your next invention!

Get up! I told you StoryBots to find an answer, not dilly-dally!

We got the answer, boss! We know how eyes see!

Yeah! It all starts when light bounces off something

and hits the cornea on the outside of your eye.

The cornea's like a curved window that protects the eye

and focuses light before it enters the pupil.

The pupil is a tiny hole in the eye

that's surrounded by a colorful structure called the iris.

The iris controls how much light enters the eye.

When it's bright out,

it makes the pupil smaller to let in less light.

And when it's dark out,

it makes the pupil bigger to let in more light.

Once light enters the eye,

it passes through a clear, blobby thing called the lens.

The lens changes shape to better focus light onto the retina.

That's like a giant movie screen at the back of your eye.

The retina has millions of cells called rods and cones.

They give off electrical signals

which travel along the optic nerve to the brain.

And when the brain organizes all those signals

to create pictures in your mind...

[all] ...that's how eyes see!

Just-- Just give me that tape!

-[whirring] -Aah! It's got my mustache! Ohh!

Good-for-nothin' frizn-frass...

[music playing]

♪ Entering the eye And makin' its way on through ♪

♪ First it's focused, Then rearranged ♪

♪ Into electrical signals That reach the brain ♪

♪ Then, voila, sit it back And enjoy the view ♪

♪ When light from an object Meets your eye ♪

♪ The first layer that it's greeted by Is the cornea ♪

♪ Which protects the eye And focuses the light ♪

♪Then it passes through the pupil ♪

♪ All surrounded by this ring of color Called the iris ♪

♪ So the right amount of light Goes in the eyes ♪

♪ And then hits the lens ♪

♪ Which is lined with Zones of special cells ♪

♪ And when the light hits those, It gets transformed into signals ♪
