[Bird chirping]

Girl: You're cheating.

Terry: Am not.

You have to be cheating.

There's no way you could know something like that without a calculator.

People used to.

You're saying you memorized the multiplication tables? What for? My dad was a scientist.

Guess he wanted me to be ready for anything.

Jackie? Jackie? Oh, sorry.

What were you saying? You've got the calculator.

Punch it in.

I, uh, wasn't listening.

Yep, for a change.

Something wrong, Jackie? I think-- I think somebody's been following me.

Following you? Who? I don't know.

But I get this feeling sometimes that I'm being watched.

Yesterday it happened in the backyard.

Today it was on the soccer field.

But when I look around, no one's there.

Father: Jackie? Sorry to interrupt the homework, but I'm trying to work on my expansion plans and I can't concentrate.

We're being as quiet as we can.

That's why I can't concentrate.

I get nervous when kids are too quiet.

And maybe we'll even bang some pots and pans together.

Anything to help you concentrate.

I knew I could count on you.

Anytime, bill.

Bill? That's what you call him? That's his name.

You know what I mean.

Oh.

Well, it's kind of a long story.

Terry? Somebody's out there.

Where? Terry! Hey.

Unh.

Hey! [Gasps]

Ooh! Unh! Uhh! Oh.

Uhh! [Tires squealing]

[Horn honks]

[Sighs]

Interesting.

Interesting? That's all you can say? It was unbelievable.

A word I rarely use.

You think I'm crazy, don't you? Terry, the sample you gave me was just soil.

Plain old dirt.

It was alive.

All right.

Supposing it was? Do you really think last night will be the end of it? So Nelson expects me to drop everything and go out with him tonight, as if I don't have a life.

What do you think I should wear? If I spent as much time studying as I do practicing my cheers, I'd actually have an education by now.

[Both laugh]

A girl's gotta have her priorities.

[Both laugh]

Ladies.

What are you still doing here? Um, taking care of some things.

Keeping an eye on me, you mean.

You're still worried, aren't you? Who wouldn't be? I wish you'd gotten a better look at that guy in the backyard.

Yeah, his features were kind of indistinct.

[Car horn honks]

You know, your dad's a pretty important guy, and he's probably got a few enemies.

I wonder if one of them-- bill's not my dad.

No problems.

Everything ok today? You can give Terry and Dana a ride, can't you? Yeah, but I need to make a stop first.

There's something you've got to see, all of you.

Bill: I saw it on the way over here.

Isn't it great? Isn't what great? Jackie, it's real estate.

This is where my new factory is going to be.

What? [All gasp]

What's that? Aah! Terry! Aah! What is this stuff? Don't touch it! Don't touch it! [Rumbling]

Aah! Get outta here! Ooh! Unnnh! Unh.

[Panting]

Oh! Oof! Unh! [Growls]

Hurry! But Dana and Terry-- they got away.

Now come on.

[Tires screeching]

[Both gasp]

TV: And in local news, there was a whole lot of shaking going on in Gotham tonight, thanks to a swarm of small earthquakes.

Seismologists give it a 3.

5 because it had a good b*at and you could really dance to it.

[Click]

This stuff can turn a person's DNA inside out.

It's toxic industrial waste.

Probably buried several years ago.

That's where Wallace fits in.

You're getting a little ahead of me.

Don't you read the news? It was only I was 7.

Oh.

Well Back then the d.

A.

Accused Wallace of dumping this kind of chemical.

Nothing was ever proved, though.

What did you find out from your friend Jackie? Not much.

Only that Wallace isn't her real father.

Not her father? Now, that's inter-- um, promising.

Will you please tell me what is going on? There's no time to explain.

Now help me get your stuff together.

Those things that came out of the ground, what were they? I--I don't know.

You know.

Otherwise we wouldn't be leaving like this.

It's not like you.

Come on! I have a right to know.

Now's not the time to-- [gasps]

Tony? It's you, isn't it? It had to be.

Tony? That was my father's name.

But this can't be-- get away from here as fast as you can.

Go! No! I want to know what this is about.

Jackie, do what I say! Tony Please I didn't know.

I didn't know! [Gasps]

Bill, tell me everything.

Now.

II can't.

Better tell her, unless you want me to.

I was just starting the company.

I didn't have much money.

I couldn't afford to dispose of my excess chemicals the way I was supposed to.

I found this abandoned mine shaft.

I don't know about this, bill.

The shaft's totally sealed.

No way for a bleed-through.

What if there's a quake? Tony, listen to me.

We may be cutting corners now, but someday this company's gonna be very, very big.

Don't you want a share of that? You talkin' partnership? I am.

Think of Jackie-- no mother, just you.

You want the best for her, don't you, bill? [Sighs]

Looks like I'm gonna need a rope Partner.

Bill: It didn't take us long to get most of the barrels into the shaft, but then, there was a problem.

Lower! Lower! Come on! It's snagged! Give it a tug! Again! [Gasps]

Aaaah! He had to be dead.

That's what we figured, anyway.

Why didn't you ever tell me about this? You were too young.

Besides, it wouldn't have brought him back.

But he is back, isn't he? What do you mean? That chemical they were dumping had catalyzing properties.

It can scramble DNA with other organic material-- like the earth itself.

[Rumbling]

Aah! He's after me.

I'm sorry.

Wait! Aaaah! Uhh! [Rumbling stops]

[Gasps]

Unh! Terry: I'm at the entrance.

Batman: Good.

Keep your directional Mikes open.

You might pick up something.

All right.

I'll keep 'em open.

Where do I start? Well, we've got a rough idea of where the house is, and we know the underground rivers can take you almost anywhere in the city.

That's the good news.

And the bad news? Everything else.

Unh! Unh! Unh! [Pulsing]

[Gasps]

You can't be.

You just can't be.

But you are, aren't you? You're him.

You're my father.

YesJackie.

And this is what the accident did to you? Not accident! Not accident! [Rumbling]

But bill said that-- aaauuurrgggh! Bill! Oh, my God.

Tony? YouLeftMeBuried! I thought you were dead.

No! Didn't want partner! That's not true! There was nothing I could do for you, nothing! But there was Jackie.

I took care of her like she was my own daughter.

Isn't that what you would have wanted? You stole her! You wanna k*ll me? Go ahead.

I got a lot to answer for, but for God's sakes, let Jackie go.

She stays And you die.

Aa-aaah No! Aauurrrgggh! [Jackie grunting]

Let him go! Aah! Aah! Aah! Terry: You heard her.

Let him go! Don't make me repeat myself.

Unnnnh! Arrrggh! Unh! Unn-unnnhh! Ahh! Come on! Rahhhhrrgghhh! Aah! [Grunting]

Aah! [Agonized groaning]

Aaaaah! There's no way out now! Try another one! Sorry.

All out.

[Groaning]

Jackie [Dying gasp]

My father.

He's not your father.

Not really.

He'sA ghost.

Dad.
