Oh!

Zac?

Zac?

No, mum, wait!

What's going on?

Zac, I can't...

Zac, what have you done to your room?

It's a complete and utter mess.

I know, mum. Sorry.

I'll clean it up.

Leave it up. It's vacuuming day.

It's my room. I... I'll fix it.

Zac, I have to clean the room anyway. I'll do it later.

Mm.

The trident belongs on Mako.

He shouldn't even have it.

Fine. Tell me where he keeps it.

If I knew that, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

He's not dumb. It's going to be somewhere he thinks is safe.

It's not where he lives.

We've already searched there and his boathouse.

Hello? Wouldn't that be the least expected?

That would make it the smartest place.

It's way too risky.

Well, then where else?

It's not like he can just carry it around with him.

Why not? I mean, if I knew the three of us were desperate to get it, I wouldn't leave it.

I'd keep it with me.

Real subtle disguise, man!

Why did you bring that for?

Mum's vacuuming, and I made it work again.

What did it do.

Blasted my coffee table.

Knocked it right over.

You kidding?

What if your locker gets searched?

What are the odds of that?

Hey!

Thunk!

What are you two up to?

Nothing.

Yeah, right!

Then what are you talking about so secretively?

Guy stuff.

Cos, if you must know, Evie, I've got a rash, and it's hard to sleep ew. Too much information.

Tried to warn you.

We better get moving.

Hey, where are your books?

I, uh, left them at home.

You can borrow one of mine.

Come on. We'll be late.

Can you see him?

Not yet.

He's got to be here somewhere.

Let's do it.

Just be careful.

Why are they staring at us?

They're still staring at us.

Maybe we need books and bags like they have.

Let's just find Zac.

You've got to be kidding me.

I thought you were going to turn this down.

You take the pictures, I write the articles.

Well, I won't be taking any more if you keep writing stuff like this.

What's the big deal?

Evie let loose in the school newspaper.

'So why does miss Santos home-school her nieces when she runs a well-respected high school?

'I never really got an answer.

Perhaps they expect to go home soon, but I got no answer to that, 'or where they're actually from either.'

So?

So you're making it sound like they've done something wrong.

Look, haven't you ever wondered why they suddenly turned up?

Miss Santos never mentioned any family before then.

Why would she?

I'm just glad they did turn up.

Oh, looks like you're not the only one who hated that article.

I warned you not to get this personal.

Zac, a word, please.

It's not my fault, miss Santos.

I can explain.

No need. Very well done, Evie.

I was only doing my job...

Sorry?

A good journalist can't be afraid to ask the difficult questions, no matter who their subject is.

Well, um...

Yes, exactly.

A good journalist also knows where to draw the line, and if they don't, their subject will draw it for them.

Zac, a private word, please.

This won't take long, but it needs to be said. The trident?

Had a feeling this would be the topic.

Don't make light of this, Zac.

Even just being in possession of it is a danger.

Yeah, yeah. I've heard all about the nasty things it's meant to do.

It's a dangerous and powerful w*apon.

The trident is so much more than that.

Look, you just have to take my word for it and put it back where it belongs.

What do you know about it?

I can't tell you.

Why not? If this is all about protecting me...

You just have to take my word for it.

If you understood the origins of the trident, you would.

That's the thing. No one's telling me the full picture.

Does it have something to do with how I got like this?

Look, I can't tell you the details, but if you use it the wrong way, there's no chance of being turned back.

What?

Zac, please, you just have to do the right thing here.

Then it does have something to do with the way I am.

Um...

Y-You really just have to listen.

Are you...? Are you OK?

Yeah, um...

Sorry. We can we can finish this later.

What's going on?

I don't know, but this thing sure got it in for our principal.

Rita?

Are you OK?

What happened?

I don't know. I just...

I was talking to Zac and...

I just felt weak.

It's almost like the life was being drained out of me.

Wh-what are you girls doing here?

Let's get you to your office first.

Now, you introduce the gas to the flask and start to slowly heat it, and I mean slowly heat it.

It will, of course, expand.

As you should all know that we're describing the relationship between temperature and volume...

Zac?

Shh.

Wh-what are you...?

So, as the gas slowly heats up and expands, the glass syringe holding your gas will be pushed out.

Now, also remember that while all this holds for ideal gases at atmospheric pressure...

Mermaids.

Here?

Over there.

Thank you. What are you girls doing here?

We think Zac might have brought the trident to school.

Here?

It's possible. Anything to stop us getting it.

Uh, I wonder if that's what could be affecting me.

We've got to find him.

Uh, his his first class is chemistry.

Block, uh, 4. Room 18.

I'll come.

No, you need to rest.

We can't leave her like this.

You guys go, and I'll stay.

You sure?

Of course. Now go and get Zac.

Where exactly were you when it happened?

Um, a-at the locker.

So what we're trying to determine is whether the deviation from the ideality...

I have to skip school. Got to find somewhere to stash that thing.

Where?

I don't know.

The mermaids are after it.

And you saw what it did to Santos.

I can't leave it in the locker.

I'm off.

You're leaving now?

Just say I'm sick.

Wh-what sort of sick?

I don't care. I've got to go.

Oh, sorry, sir. I've got to go.

Zac?

Uh, what is the volume of the mass inside the apparatus?

And what is the best way to measure the temperature of the gas?

Right off the gas and the water around it.

This is it.

Whoosh! Clang!

It's empty.

16, 17...

There it is.

I don't see him.

Where is he?

Well, if anyone knows, then I guess Cam will know.

Good idea.
Lyla, Nixie. I know why you're here.

It's about the article, isn't it?

I'm so sorry.

Please tell Sirena I had no idea.

It's not my fault.

Yeah, OK.

You do believe me, though, don't you?

Yes.

I just want her to know that I had nothing to do with it.

It's my brother.

You will tell her, won't you?

Uh, yeah.

I'm at school, Joe.

I can't help you pack fish.

Well, then work later.

Sorry. Still not my problem.

I can't help you.

Get this.

My brother Joe expects me to help him pack fish at the warehouse.

Warehouse?

Because he's running late and he's too stingy to pay overtime.

And he wonders why I won't skip school.

Why would I want to go into a business that starts before Dawn and ends at noon?

The warehouse? Yeah, yeah.

I know it.

OK. Yep, cool, I got that.

All right.

You think he's meeting Zac?

In there?

Don't know.

I'll just go in.

Hey, what are you doing in here?

Get out!

Uh, nope. Zac's not in there, so don't ever ask me what I just saw.

Where is he?

He said he was going to the library.

Or was it the gym?

Or was it the assembly hall?

Gee, he's such a busy guy.

Nah, it's definitely the library.

Come on. It's just the two of us. We still got to get it done.

Keep moving.

Evie?

Sorry to disturb you, miss Santos, but I have to talk to you.

Not now, Evie. You'll have to make an appointment with my assistant, Emma.

Is Zac in trouble?

Look, I know you two are close, but I can't discuss this with you.

Something is going on, and I want to know what it is.

Aren't you due in class shortly?

First, your nieces turn up, and then Zac vanishes.

What is going on?

You have had your chance to ask questions. You wrote your article.

Now, please, just go to class.

Hey, let me handle this.

Hey, Evie, how are you?

What do you want?

OK, I get that we don't really get on.

I meant what I said in the article.

OK, fine.

We need your help. We've got to find Zac. He's in trouble.

What sort of trouble?

It's too hard to explain. You're just going to have to trust me, OK?

Me? Believe you?

Evie, where is he?

Just tell me what is going on.

I already told you.

It's too hard to explain.

Do you really think I'm stupid enough to fall for that?

We have to know.

You'd do anything to get close to him.

It's not that.

I know you like him, but you don't belong here.

He's my boyfriend, so give up and leave us alone.

All right?

Right.

That'll do. Get this last one in.

All righty.

Cam, where's Zac?

Beats me. He must have felt sick or something.

Well, why didn't he say anything to me?

Hi, mum.

Uh, Cam, it's me.

Yeah, I know, mum.

Hey, I've got good news for you.

The birds are flying off course.

What?

The dolphins are after the wrong worm.

Seriously, I'm counting to three and then I'm hanging up.

Yeah, I'm trying to tell you it's all good.

I've put your fishy friends off the scent. Does it still work?

Like you wouldn't believe.

It's seriously awesome.

OK, stay there. I'll join you.

No, no. Don't!

Let's get Sirena.

Ouch!

Watch this.

That is so cool.

And that's just the beginning.

Imagine what it can really do when I figure it out.

How did you do that?

I didn't. the last time it started by itself, it was in my locker.

When Santos was close.

So? She's not here now.

What are you...?

Thought as much.

Come on, girls. Where are you?

Mermaids.

Sirena? Are you OK?

I guess this thing doesn't like mermaids.

Not again! Great, thanks!

Someone's broken in.

What the...?

Oh.

Who's there?

I said who's there?!

Well, go on. Check the back.

Now I know why you're all so scared of it.

This isn't over, Zac.

Oh, I think it is.

Come on.

You feeling any better?

It was weird.

It's like all the life was being drained out of me.

That's exactly how I felt at the school.

Every time we tried to use our powers, it counteracted them, and it made us visible.

What is this thing? It's like none of our powers work against it.

That's why it was locked away all those years ago.

It's designed to override everything we do.

And worse.

Worse?

So it's more than just a w*apon?

Is there something you're not telling us?

Because now would be a good time.

The trident was designed by mermen who tried to seize Mako from the Pod over a thousand years ago.

Now that it's alive again, if it's taken to the Moon Pool during the full moon, it'll destroy the pool and the source of all our power.

I'm sorry I didn't tell you before.

I just I never thought Zac would manage to activate it or control it.

No one thought there was a w*r.

We have to get it off him.

How?

I don't know, but we are going to find a way.

Oh, did you see the look on their faces?

Yeah.

With this thing, they can't even hide from you.

They can't even use their powers. They've got no chance.

There's nothing they can do about it.

Nope.

But there's a lot more. It's somewhow connected with the island, and I'm going to find out how.
