Seriously? Zac?

Hilarious.

Shouldn't you be busy?

Yeah, I can't do anything while Evie's at home.

But the minute she goes to work, my master plan springs into action.

She has no idea.

Hi, Evie.

Yes, he's here.

Hey, your phone's off.

Where are you?

Uh, fishing with Cam.

Fishing?

Yeah, he got a new rod.

We wanted to try it out.

So when am I gonna see you?

I don't know.

It's pretty nice out here.

You're not gonna be out there all day.

Sorry, got a bite, can't talk. Bye.

Right.

Oh, you're good.

I'm gonna make this the biggest surprise of her life.

There's my girl.

Happy birthday, honey.

It's a music download voucher.

I know it's not much, but...

No, Dad... it's great.

Thank you.

So, what you got planned for your big day?

Uh, just work, by the look of it.

Well, a quiet birthday is not such a bad thing.

And speaking of work...

Oh, I know.

I was just going to get going.

We'll do something later.

Just you and me.

That smells nice.

It's water lily perfume.

I'm giving it to Evie for her birthday.

Giving?

Yeah.

I'm giving her a shell bracelet.

What about you?

Why are you giving Evie presents?

Land people do the opposite of what we do.

Instead of giving presents on their birthday, they get them.

That's strange.

That's not all.

Sometimes land people have parties where you can dress up as anything, even an animal.

I am not doing that!

Don't worry.

It's not that kind of party.

But you still have to give her a present.

We can all give her the perfume.

I mean, a present each.

It's okay, Zac.

She's gone to work.

Don't worry, she doesn't suspect a thing.

I've never thrown a surprise party before.

Well, that makes you even.

She's never had one.

So what did you get her?

Uh, nothing yet.

Everything I think of is just too expensive.

Yeah, it was so much easier when she was little.

How do you mean?

Well, when Evie was seven, I got her a goldfish in a bowl with a miniature diver and treasure chest.

Mate, she'd sit, she'd look at it for hours.

Maybe that's where she got her love of diving from.

I don't know why she doesn't do it anymore.

I guess she just lost interest.

All set?

Yep.

The party platters are good to go.

You texted Evie "happy birthday" yet?

Nope.

Zac said we should just make like it's any other day.

And don't think she'll be sus when no one remembers her birthday.

That would seem a bit strange.

Happy birthday!

Thanks.

It's really nice you guys remembered.

Of course.

I was just texting you.

So Zac's back from fishing, too?

Yeah, but he had to go take care of something.

Did he say what?

Uh, his mum wanted him to pick up some dry cleaning.

Boring, right?

Yeah, I guess I'll see him later.

It's a pity you have to work today.

There's not much else to do.

Zac doesn't even remember it's my birthday.

Oh, I'm sure he does.

Then he doesn't care.

Either way, it obviously doesn't mean much to him.

You know that's not true.

Zac's a great guy.

I wish I had what you guys have.

Hey.

Hey, what are you doing?

Uh, walking.

Do you want to walk over here and hang out with me?

Sorry, I can't.

A few things have come up.

What kind of things?

Just some random stuff.

I'll try and get there later, okay?

Fine.

Have fun with your random stuff.

Hey, Evie.

It's your special day!

You wouldn't know it.

You packing up already?

You just got here.

I'm gonna do something for my birthday, even if I have to do it by myself.

Like what sort of things?

Mmm, might go out, might go home.

The world is my oyster.

Evie is talking about going home.

It'll ruin the surprise.

You have to do something.

Me?

I can't, I'm working.

What will I do?

It doesn't matter.

Just keep her busy for three hours until the party starts.

How will I know when three hours is up?

Look at a watch.

Go! Go!

So, do you wanna do something?

Like what?

Your present.

I can give you your present.

It's at Rita's.

I think you'll really like it.

Yeah. Okay.

Sounds nice.

Sea slugs?

That's not much of a present.

No, I'm talking about a whole bucket of sea slugs.

Yum!

Just 'cause Evie has a tail doesn't mean she likes mermaid food.

She'll think that's weird.

Land people's birthdays are weird.

Hey.

I just wanted to check if you guys are coming to the party.

We sure are.

What's that?

It's my present for Evie.

Do you want to see?

It's not even big enough for a snack.

It's for looking at, not eating.

Evie's gonna love it.

It's a little bare.

Even goldfish appreciate a bit of interior decoration.

How about I decorate it, as my present to Evie?

Sure, I guess.

We'll bring it over when it's done.

As long as Evie doesn't see it before the party.

I still say you should've used the pink coral.

Not with a gold fish.

I hope she appreciates all the trouble I'm going to.

It's Evie, of course she will.

I mean the fish.

Shoo, Poseidon!

This fish is off limits, okay?
Hey, guys.

Evie's here.

Happy birthday!

Thanks.

I brought Evie by to show her her present.

Great.

So, why don't you take her up there and show her?

Yes, you should do that.

Right now.

Okay.

It's water lily perfume.

Thanks, but if I touch it, won't I transform?

Despite the name, water lily perfume is made with natural oils, not water.

So it's perfect for you.

It's really nice.

Thank you so much, Mimmi.

I'm sure Zac will love it.

Yeah, I doubt he'd notice.

He hasn't remembered it's my birthday.

He didn't even call me.

And then when I called him, he didn't remember today was anything special.

Maybe I'm not anything special.

You certainly are.

How?

In lots of ways.

Your mermaid skills, for example.

If you were in a pod, you'd be close to getting your moon ring.

You think?

Definitely.

In fact, I reckon you should try one on for size.

Mimmi, could we see you for a second?

Okay.

What's up?

Zac's present for Evie is in there.

We promised him we wouldn't let her see it.

Carly said I had to keep her busy until it was time for the party or it would ruin the surprise.

So take her somewhere else.

Where?

Hello?

Sirena!

Mimmi!

Ondina!

Poseidon!

No...

Um, Poseidon... stay.

Hey, Evie?

How about we go for a walk to the...

Evie?

It's not like her to just leave.

What if she's gone home?

She's probably just gone for a swim.

Yeah, we would've seen her if she left through the bookcase.

I'd better catch her.

And we'll get ready for the party.

Evie left.

What? Why?

Because someone very important to her didn't wish her a happy birthday.

But that would've ruined the surprise.

I think you gave her an even bigger one by not saying anything.

I better call her.

It's okay.

I sent Mimmi with her.

Mimmi?

Don't worry.

I gave her strict orders not to let Evie near the house until the party.

Poseidon, I told you, off limits.

Sirena! Down here!

Come on, Poseidon.

This fish is for Evie, not you.

Ondina, wait!

Did you hear something?

Probably just my stomach.

I'm hoping there's food at this party.

Sirena!

Wait!

Okay, so, food?

Check.

Drinks?

Check.

Cake?

Cake?

Cam?

Kidding. Check.

Decorations?

Done.

Zac, would you relax?

It's gonna be a great party.

I just hope Mimmi is looking after Evie.

Come on, Evie.

Where are you?

Nice outfit.

Thanks.

I hope Evie likes what I've done.

What is it?

It's my present to Evie.

I did the decorating.

Wow!

Oh, that's great.

I'm sure she'll love it.

The coral's a nice touch, although pink would look better.

This party's gonna be great, Zac.

I can't wait for Evie to get here.

I'm already here!

Dance?

Sorry, not my thing.

Hey!

Down here!

Sure you don't wanna dance?

Wobbling around on legs is not my idea of fun.

This giving presents thing is so weird.

I mean, what do they do with all this stuff?

Come on.

Where do they put it all?

It's why land people have houses.

Ah, thanks, David.

Everyone, Evie's gonna be here any second, so hide.

This is gonna be so fun.

Surprise!

Where's Evie?

You were supposed to look after her.

I did.

I took her to Rita's.

And then?

And then she was gone.

Did something happen?

She seemed pretty upset.

What did you do?

Nothing!

She thinks you forgot her birthday.

Evie, I think there's been a misunderstanding.

Can you please call me as soon as you get this?

What if she doesn't come?

Zac, relax.

She'll be here.

In the meantime, why waste a good party?

Okay, uh...

Call me if she shows.

She's not at the café

and no one else has seen her.

I tried too hard to be clever.

I just wish I knew where she was.

These are delicious.

You really made them?

You could sell them in the café.

I do, you just never order them.

Well, lemon's my favorite, so next time I'm in, you should bring me one whether I've ordered it or not.

Sometimes I make strawberry.

Even better.

Strawberry's my favorite.

Didn't you just say lemon was your favorite?

Evie, it's me again.

Call me.

She's still not answering.

I blew it.

I just wanted this party to be awesome.

I wanted Evie to know how special she makes me feel.

I'm sure she does.

You know, we've known each other since we were six.

Even back then, I couldn't wait to get to school to see her.

She really makes me feel special.

Every day I wake up thinking

"I get to see her,"

and it makes me smile.

Well, now she probably hates me forever.

She's my best friend and I can't imagine my life without her.

I'm sure she'll understand.

Let me get you a drink.

Evie?

Hi.

Evie's in the fish bowl.

Evie?

Cam!

It was an accident.

That punch can't be good for the fish.

I'm gonna change the water.

No, I'll do it.

Like I'm gonna leave this to Mr. Clumsy.

I told you it was an accident.

And we don't need any more.

Carly!

What's going on?

No time to explain!

Come!

Where's the fish bowl?

We have to find it!

Why?

Evie's in it!

You don't know what you're doing.

Dirty water out, clean water in.

Carly, no!

What's the problem?

Evie's coming, everybody! Hide!

Hi.

Quickly, before someone sees us.

My moon ring must have shrunk Evie when I lent it to her.

And the lesson is never give someone else your moon ring.

Ondina.

Can we bring her back?

I'm so sorry, Evie.

It was so stupid of me not to tell you about the party.

I just wanted to do something special for you and give you a present that you'd never forget.

And I know I messed it up. I just...

I heard what you said to Mimmi.

And that was the best present I could ever get.

I can't imagine my life without you either.

Hi, everyone!

Surprise!

Where have you been?

I just went for a tiny swim.

What's that smell?

Oh, it's water lily perfume.

Mimmi made it for me.

Smells more like fruit punch.

Happy birthday, sweetheart!

Aw, thanks, Dad.

Thanks, everyone.

It's perfect.

Happy birthday!

Ondina did a nice job of decorating.

How lucky she put that coral in there for you to hide behind.

Otherwise, this surprise party would have been a whole lot more surprising.

I found this in the garage.

I thought it might go nicely with Zac's present.

It's the same as I had when I was little.

It's exactly the same.

You kept it?

Yeah.

So, let's see how it looks.

You found it, you should do it.

It's perfect.

I used to dream of what it would be like to be a diver and swim with the fish.

Not anymore.

I guess I've gotten a little too big.
