Previously on "Nashville"...

You guys are really good together.

Should I be worried?

No. Just music.

Will: The songs are all written and done, but I guess I didn't want our time together to come to an end.

I'm sick. I got cancer.

Your only option is a liver transplant.

Who are you?

I'm the nanny.

Where's my wife?

She left a little while ago.

I got to quit the band... for the baby's sake.

Layla Grant, the perfect guest star for you while you're in town.

I'll do you a favor if you do one for me.

I want to meet Luke Wheeler.

She really hurt you, didn't she?

Luke: I mean, I didn't know half this stuff was here.

Those are Carl Perkins' actual blue suede shoes.

[Chuckles, gasps] Kitty Wells' guitar.

I should learn to play.

What, you're a Kitty Wells fan?

Uh, not many people know this, but I'm a big country-music geek.

Kitty paved the way for patsy, who paved the way for Loretta, who's pretty much a goddess to me.

She is a class act.

Speaking of classy, look at that.

Come on... I want to show you why I really asked you to the Country Music Hall of Fame.

And museum.

[Laughing] Oh, man.

What was I thinking with that hair?

I was obsessed with this album.

I even sang "Shotgun" at my 8th-grade talent show.

[Inhales sharply]

Something tells me you didn't just bring me here to make fun of my mullet.

[Clears throat]

I want to make a country album, and my label's not too excited about the idea, and I was really hoping you might consider singing a duet with me just to help make my case.

I'm flattered. I really am. But, uh... sh**t.

Between starting my own label and launching my next album, I'm not sure I can commit to something like that right now.

Yeah. I... I figured as much.

I... [Sighs] I had to ask.

Tell you what, though.

I'm going to this, uh, music charity thing tonight.

Why don't you come with me?

Bunch of industry folks will be there, and maybe you'll meet somebody else who'll do you the honor.

Yeah?

Yeah. A... all right.

Oh. You wrote it, Dad.

Yeah, well, your mom wrote most of it.

Everybody sounded great.

All right, y'all, let's get everything packed up so we can get home, change, and get back here, okay?

Okay.

[Coughing deeply]

Honey.

Don't do this tonight if you're not feeling up for it.

I'm not gonna miss this, all right?

It's not pushing it just to live my life.

Thank you for caring, though.

Hey! I'm back from L.A. hello?

Sandra?

Hi. H... hi.

What a lovely surprise.

Shouldn't be. I told you when you were in L.A.

You did.

You know, I'm so sorry.

I was just so busy, I... slipped my mind.

How long are you gonna be here?

Till you and I agree on a more permanent childcare situation.

Welcome, then.

This little angel is a pleasure.

But you must miss her. Here...

Oh, gosh, no. You guys look so comfortable together.

Please, please.

And I've got to get ready for the fundraiser we have tonight.

Wait... we're still going to that?

You know what... you should come.

I'm gonna be singing.

Bo, will you be back here in an hour to pick us up?

You got it. Thank you.

She can't come. She's our babysitter.

And since when are you singing tonight?

Since I found out there's a command performance being auctioned off tonight, and Rayna's gonna bid enough money for me to get up there on that stage.

Too cute.

You left for three days, and already committed us to this?

Juliette, we're supposed to be making these decisions together.

I mean, this is...

Can we please not talk about this right now?

I really have to focus on tonight.

It's, like, kind of my comeback.

Well, if that's the case, maybe I should just stay home.

Don't want to distract you.

You're gonna miss a hell of a show.

You realize that between my place and yours, we haven't been outside for days.

There's nothing but trees and sky out there, anyway.

I do have to get back to the real world tonight.

I'm going to some big charity event Luke Wheeler invited me to.

The Note by Note fundraiser?

Yeah.

No way. I'm going to that, too.

I'm a mentor for the program.

Oh.

I guess I'll be seeing more of you, then.

Yeah.

But listen, just so you know, I'm bringing someone.

I... I invited him like a month ago, this guy I've hung out with a few times.

Does that freak you out?

'Course not. [Chuckles]

It's just been four days. It's not like we're...

Can you just stop dragging your heels and pick one, please?

We're gonna be spending a lot of time with this guy, and it ain't too much to ask that he bathe regularly and I can understand him.

You sure this is all you're worried about?

Okay, so, maybe it's time that we stop trying to make something that's not supposed to happen happen.

What is that supposed to mean?

I... is it possible for us to speak to Dr. Dellaverson?

She's en route to Columbus with the rest of the transplant team.

Guy's been a thorn in my side, and nobody knows better than you what that feels like, but, uh, I wouldn't wish what he's going through on anybody.

Well, look, the good news is they found him a liver.

Really?

Yes.

They're at the hospital right now.

And Maddie went with them, of course.

Well, I know how hard it's been on her.

It's been tough on both girls... which is why I have another favor to ask you.

So, are you part of the mayor's program?

Not yet, no, but my... my friend is, uh, is one of the mentors, so, uh...

Hey! I haven't seen you in forever.

Um, hi. I did not know that you were still in town.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for the opportunity to play at your show.

My pleasure.

Truth be told, I was kind of hoping you'd suck, if only to prove Jeff wrong.

He is the worst when he's right, isn't he?

Totally. Tell me about it.

Can I get you two a drink?

Um, white wine?

That sounds great. Thanks.

All right.

Thanks.

I have to say, I kind of feel like it's fate that you're here, just 'cause, you know, I admire you so much.

What possessed you guys to sign that little copycat?

Well, I mean, she's grown a lot since "American Hitmaker."

Really?

And Jeff's building a really solid fan base for her, so we actually have pretty high expectations for the first album.

Mm.

Speaking of albums, I need to get back in the studio and finish mine.

Okay. When?

Soon as possible.

Baby's out, I'm back to work.

I quit the band to help Juliette out.

And you see what's going on here. I'm basically alone.

That's probably how she felt when you were out on tour and she was pregnant at home.

Hon, I understand how stressful this is.

A baby's got a lot of needs.

So does Juliette, and so do you.

Yeah, but the baby's supposed to come first, right?

Absolutely.

But a baby can't take care of you back.

That's why you've got each other.

Yeah, well, it sure doesn't feel like it right now, 'cause Juliette is acting like...

You can lay blame or you can try and fix the problem.

Only one of those is going to make a marriage stronger.

How much time you spend on this thing?

Not a ton.

Oh, really?

Really.

Tell him what level you're on.

[Laughs]

860.

[Laughing] 860.

Yes. [Laughs]

Yes, it is.

Oh, all right, look.

If this is about the noise, it's their fault.

It's not mine, okay?

Oh, hey, Doctor.

Hey.

Uh, actually, we have a little bit of an issue.

What kind of issue?

You have a fever.

It's low-grade... just 100.5.

So what does that mean?

Well, it means that we need to figure out what's causing it so that the surgical team can determine how to proceed.

Look, I feel fine, okay? Absolutely fine.

Well, the fever says that you're not.

If it's something relatively manageable, they'll likely move forward.

"Likely."

Maddie: Wait... he may not get the surgery?

Well, if it's more serious, like pneumonia, then we run the risk of your body rejecting the liver, and they won't operate if that's the case.

So we're gonna run a few tests now, okay, and we're gonna get to the bottom of this.

Rayna: I know they're about to go into surgery on the patient in Ohio.

What if we don't have these results by then?

Well, then, the liver goes to the next recipient on the transplant list.

Um, I'll be right back.

I'm sorry about this.

But we're gonna sort this out as fast as we can.

If there's anything else I can do, let me know.

Caleb.

Is there something you can do, somebody you can talk to?

Wha... that's not how this works.

Um, that's the surgical team's decision, and I'm not on the surgical team.

[Crying] Please do something. Please do something.

Surely you must have some sway on the surgical team.

There's a protocol.

Look, what if Deacon were to reject the liver that could have gone to someone else on the transplant list, someone equally as deserving?

What if the tumor gets too big? What if they can't find a liver?

Then Maddie loses her father, I lose my uncle.

We... we can't just let him die.

Everyone on that list has someone that feels exactly the same way.

I can't compromise my integrity because we're in a relationship.

And I wish you wouldn't ask me to do that.

Scarlett.

Wait... so you did pageants, too?

You're looking at the 1998 Miss Sacramento Walnut Princess.

Hey.

Uh, come with me. I want to introduce you to Clay Hunnicutt.

Look, what happened between you two was a long time ago, okay?

You need to get over it, because it's seriously affecting your judgment.

You don't know what you're talking about.

Do you?

Or can you really not see that this is a huge opportunity?

Of course I know it is, okay?

Tons of exposure for you, lots of money for both of us.

Then what's the problem?

Let me tell you about Jade.

She uses people until she doesn't need them anymore, [scoffs] And then she throws them away like they're nothing.

Do you think it's a compliment that she sees herself in you?

No. It's a reason to run like hell away from her.

I'm trying to protect you.

No tour. End of discussion.

No, thanks. I'll find my own ride.

All right, you know what?

Enough with the silent treatment.

[Sighs]

[Door closes]

Keep your voice down.

Why? So we don't wake your mother?

Actually, I was more concerned about our daughter.

Oh, and I'm not?

I don't know.

I mean, I have no idea what you're thinking.

'Cause you don't... you don't talk to me.

You go to L.A. on your own.

You quit nursing on your own.

Juliette, I can't do this alone.

I know you can't.

That's why I hired a nanny. And you fired her.

I am trying to meet you halfway, but you can't even see that because you're so wrapped up in yourself.

What are you talking about?

You picked a fight with a complete stranger because you didn't get a chance to sing.

She was so out of line.

No, Juliette! You were!

And it scares me that you don't know that!

Tonight was about music in schools, not a Juliette Barnes comeback.

Honestly, what the hell is wrong with you?!

[Cadence crying]

[Country music plays]

Any chance you can take me home?

I thought you came with Jeff Fordham.

I didn't realize the two of you were hanging out after his party.

Well, he is my manager.

That all?

It's complicated.

[Scoffs]

Well, for what it's worth, Jeff seems pretty simple to me.

He only cares about you if you make him money.

I don't know if that's true.

You ready to go?

[Sighs]

Uh... actually, I'm... I'm just gonna grab a cab.

Thanks, though.

We're lucky, aren't we, Dad?

To have each other.

We sure are, kiddo.

Do you think Mom would let me live here for a little while?

[Sighs]

You know, I...

I can't imagine she would.

Why not?

You're my dad.

My only dad.

Being at Mom's just doesn't feel like home anymore.

Well, I'll tell you what.

I, uh... I'll ask her, okay?

Soon as Deacon's out of the woods.

Promise?

I promise.

Ooh. The Bluebird.

I've heard so much about this place.

I can't believe I'm actually here.

You've played here a lot, haven't you?

I sure have, yeah.

I don't think I could do it. It's way too intimidating.

You kidding me? You play stadiums.

Exactly... hiding behind smoke and mirrors and costume changes.

I mean, this place, you're just you.

[Cheers and applause]

Hey, everybody. Welcome to the Bluebird.

We've got a very special guest with us tonight.

Miss Jade St. John is here.

[Applause]

She's a big fan of country music, so I've heard, and I was hoping we could kick this next set off with a song from her.

[Cheers and applause]

Is this your doing?

Hey, listen, nobody will accuse you of buying country cred here.

But they'll sure let you know if you've earned it.

What do you say, Jade? Want to get up and sing one?

[Cheers and applause]

You're so good with her.

I'm sorry.

I hate fighting with you.

Me too.

And look at everything we went through to bring this little miracle into the world together.

[Inhales sharply]

I want us to be on the same side, Juliette.

[Sighs]

But you got to let me in.

I want to. I do.

I just don't really understand everything that's going on with me.

It's just... such a big change.

I was inducted into the Opry.

I played a country-music icon.

And... now all that stuff just seems so far away.

You're gonna get it all back again.

It's just gonna take a little time.

What if I don't get it back?

What if I become irrelevant at 25?

That's not possible.

You will always be the unforgettable Juliette Barnes.

And someday soon, you're gonna start to feel like her again.

I promise.

I'd like to sing an old song by... a new friend of mine.

It's one of my favorites.

It's called "Shotgun."

[Cheers and applause]

[Chuckles]

Jade St. John.

[Cheers continue]

We have a problem.

[Echoing] Hey, Deacon. Deacon?

[Echoing stops] Deacon, hey, can you hear me?

[Breathes deeply]

How'd I do?

Um... there was a problem in Columbus.

After they took the liver out of the donor, the surgical team found cancerous lesions on the donor's lungs.

They didn't want to take the risk that the cancer had spread to...

I didn't get the surgery.

No.

But we found one donor. We'll be able to find another one.

Will we?

Well, we can hope.

Hey, thanks for tonight.

I haven't felt that connected to an audience in a really long time.

Well, that was all you.

And about that album you want to record... you don't need me or anybody else singing a duet with you to prove you can do country.

You showed that tonight.

Well, you want to come back to L.A. with me and tell that to my label?

Sure sounds tempting.

Did you really sing "Shotgun" at your 8th-grade talent show?

[Chuckles]

I had braces and an asymmetrical haircut.

It so wasn't pretty.

Well, couldn't be any worse than my first album cover.

Don't sell yourself short.

I had a poster of that hanging over my bed, and... I kissed you every night before I went to sleep.

Well...

[Sighs]

Would it be all right if the... real thing kissed you back?

It'd be kind of crazy great.

I like that you have a favorite bar.

Makes you easier to find.

Bartender: What can I get for you?

Uh, sea breeze... on his tab.

You got it.

Here's the thing... I'm going on tour with Jade.

Of course you are. Why would you listen to me?

I heard every word that you said.

You're willing to walk away from money for yourself 'cause you're looking out for me.

And you are still ignoring my advice.

No.

I'm just ignoring your concern.

Here you go.

Thanks.

I'm not gonna turn into Jade.

I'm not gonna throw you away.

I don't want to do this without you.

I can't.

[Sighs]

Uh, I don't want to spoil your date or anything.

There's just... something I got to get off my chest.

Okay.

This is all really new to me, but I do know that, uh...

I've never felt... this way... about anybody before.

And, uh... but it didn't feel right, you being there with someone else.

So, what I'd like to ask... I mean, what...

I mean, what... what would make me happy right now is if, um... if, um, it could just... be the two of us while I figure this out.

I think I can handle that.

That's great.

Um...

I'll, uh... I'll let you get back to Brad.

Chad.

Ch... Chad. Yeah.

[Chuckles]

He's not here.

No?

No.

I couldn't wait for the night to be over.

Unless, of course, it isn't.

Hi. It's me.

Gunnar: How'd it go?

It didn't.

Donor didn't work out, so we're back to square one.

[Sighs] I'm so sorry.

How are you?

I don't want to talk about it.

I, uh, called about the band.

Yeah.

I don't want to give up on it.

You sure?

Yeah, well, aside from everything that's happened between us, we're friends.

And we don't need to replace Avery.

We can't.

We can do it ourselves.

Just the two of us?

A duo?

Well, I'd say the music we make is pretty special.

Can't argue with that.

Good. I'll talk to you tomorrow.

All right.

[Sighs]

I'm sorry we fought.

I really appreciate how seriously you take your work.

That's why you're so good with Deacon.

And I shouldn't have asked you to bend the rules for us.

Thank you.

And I'm really sorry, too.

It has been a long, stressful day.

For all of us.

Yeah.

Can I, uh, give you a ride home?

Um, my car is here. Gunnar dropped it off for me.

Oh.

But I'll meet you at your place.

Yeah.

Hey, uh, your mom's getting the car, so you just make sure you got everything, okay?

Okay.

You okay?

This really isn't fair.

I know it's been a while since you and I have...

[Sighs]

And I'm grateful. I really, truly am.

I mean, you quit drinking so long ago.

Why is this happening now?

I don't know, sweetie.

I'm just real sorry that you got to go through it.

And if I've offended you in some way, I'd really love to clear that up right now.

'Cause I really need you.

[Voice breaking] Please tell me that you're not gonna die.

[Sighs]

Baby, I can't.

[Sobs]

I...

[voice breaking] I'm sorry, baby. I can't.

'Cause there's a man and a little girl who are really looking to me to be strong for them.

[Voice breaking] So I'm asking if you could please, please show me the way... so I can be strong and not feel so alone.
