Previously on Sleepy Hollow...

The man you love shall be forevermore a beast.

(bellowing)

(g*nsh*t)

Pandora: When the sands run out, he will possess the total power of the pantheon of ancient gods.

The lieutenant and I will journey to the Catacombs.

Once there, we will restore Pandora's box, and use it to drain the Hidden One of his power.

(gasps)

Betsy...

Ichabod.

You are freaking out, Crane.

Hardly.

I'm making preparations for restoring Pandora's box.

Oh, I know you well enough to know when you're bugging.

Very well, perhaps I am a little more than moderately agitated.

And for good reason... finding Betsy Ross alive, trapped down here.

It's what happens when she leaves that concerns me more.

If Betsy enters the Well you used to leave this place, she will return in her own time, so... you and I must endeavor to help her on her way as soon as she returns from scouting the environs.

And we cannot let on that we are from the future. Or we risk damaging the time stream.

I get it. I saw Star Wars.

Trek
not Wars, but yes.

As Captain James Tiberius Kirk learned the hard way in the most memorable episode, "City on the Edge of Forever."

Okay, well, I will let you be the one to bring up jumping into a bottomless well.

Betsy: My circumnavigation has revealed nothing of use to the w*r effort.

Yeah, nothing but sand and sun for over 1,000 miles.

Which makes me wonder how you came to acquire such intimate knowledge of the Catacombs.

That information we cannot share, Betsy.

You see, we are more than simply a rescue mission.

We have very specific orders from General Washington.

He would only have shared the existence of the supernatural with you in the most dire of circumstances.

Or sent a stranger to accompany you.

In your absence, Lieutenant Mills and I have formed a very strong partnership.

Lieutenant?

There are no female officers in the Continental Army.

It's a pet name.

I... call him Crane.

Crane: Regrettably, the veil of secrecy precludes our sharing of details, Betsy.

We are to restore a powerful, supernatural artifact, and it is our only hope against a foe who holds the fate of the world in his hands.

"Here rests the container that holds all the evil of the world. Dark vessel of nightmare. (echoing): Dread urn forged in the void. Let that which is broken be remade."

When last we saw this box, 'twas silver in hue.

Did we do something wrong?

I performed the incantation as instructed.

Over here.

Cuneiform is the same as on the pedestal.

"Binding the evils of the world.

"A radiance given by...

"one who bears Witness.

An Eternal Soul."

Pandora made no reference to this.

That can't be good.

Crane: No, nor the reference to Witness, specifically this...

Eternal Soul.

I fear the missing ingredient may be one of us.

Lieutenant!

(loud whooshing)

(grunting)

(gasping)

Lieutenant... are you all right?

Fine.

(panting)

Its bark is worse than its bite.

The Box... we did it.

Which means it got what it needed.

(groans)

No, no.

Abbie.

There's a pulse.

It feels very faint.

Crane...

Save your strength.

I hope you got the plates off the truck that hit me.

The Box took something precious.

There's a void.

Something's wrong.

We'll fix it.

We've come back from worse.

It is a side of the job that is never advertised.

And we were just talking about, on the way here, cheating death.

Enough of that.

Perhaps Washington or Revere can help her when we get back.

We're not coming back with you, Betsy.

You are not the Crane I know.

Betsy, believe me, I am telling the truth in that I... cannot tell the whole truth.

Only one truth matters.

Your heart belongs to Abigail Mills.

She is my partner.

I must leave this place.

Um... at the far end of the plateau there is a Well beside the stump of a tree.

Enter and... you will return from whence you came.

Miss Mills.

You have a good partner in Ichabod Crane.

Put him in his place every once in a while.

Keeps him honest.

I'm sorry about how things ended with Betsy.

At least now I understand why we never spoke after she returned from this... dreadful place.

Our partnership was a prelude to a destiny I could never have imagined.

One I share with you.

Shall we?

Well, not until you tell me whatever it is... you don't want to tell me.

The tablet I found in my family crypt had a symbol on it I could not translate until today, when it appeared on the wall of the antechamber.

It reads, "Eternal Soul," meaning the soul of a Witness that the Box requires.

Which is why Pandora sent us both.

There are powerful forces at work here, and I do not intend to be pawn to them.

We make our own destiny.

Right now, we are destined to take a plunge.

Let's do this.

In through a tree, out through a well.

How about an escalator to the Catacombs?

It would not have the same metaphorical heft, I fear.

Now... let us not miss the perfect opportunity for embracing...

(echoing): Tally-ho!

That was not very sporting!

(grunts)

What she said.

(door opens)

Abbie, you made it.

(grunts)

The mission was a success.

Abbie: How'd it go on this end? Where is everyone?

Where's Joe, Sophie, Reynolds?

Dad.

Jennifer asked me to come.

What's wrong? What happened?

It's Joe.

He, uh...

(crying): He turned again.

The Hidden One...

I'm sorry.

Joe was our brother.

And mine.

My condolences, Miss Jenny.

Master Corbin fought bravely, and he saved countless lives, and we will honor him by picking up his standard and marching on.

Believe me... the Hidden One will pay for this.

I've been looking for ways to modify our arsenal, searching for myths in which gods are k*lled, like the Norse Ragnarok.

Twilight of the Gods.

The battle in which all existence was destroyed and remade.

We just need to get around that part.

Nothing is where it used to be.

You been here before?

Many years ago.

My friendship with August Corbin was strained, but there was... always mutual respect.

Oh, here it is.

The Elder Edda. (blows)

If there's a clue in the Ragnarok myth, you'll find it here.

But a w*apon powerful enough to take down a god?

It's a tall order.

And we have just the thing, but the Box is no use without Pandora.

The Hidden One disappeared with her to parts unknown.

Crane: And these... chirosiphones have proven most useful against all manner of creatures.

Shouldn't take long to whip up some Greek Fire.

(chuckles)

If you have a moment.

I'll, um... make the arrangements for Joe.

I owe it to his father.

And you girls have bigger fish to fry.

Thank you.

And thank you for looking after Jenny.

It's nothing but a thing.

All that water under the bridge... doesn't make us any less a family.

Amen to that.

Are you okay?

I'm fine.

I have a thousand questions that I want to ask you, but right now is not the time.

No, but when the moment's right, there is much I need to tell you, young lady.

I look forward to it.

Sorry about your friend.

We'll pay our respects when we stop the world from ending.

We got the Box.

Now we need to find its owner.

We've been monitoring emergency bands.

National Weather Service is on alert.

There's a freak storm building over the Hudson Valley.

Abbie: Wild guess... target's at the epicenter.

All right, thanks.

Just doing our part for Team Witness, right?

Not just for that.

For taking all this in stride.

I'm just glad we're all on the same page.

Me, too, Danny.

You and Sophie stay on over-watch.

Keep the situation under wraps.

I'm gonna get the Box back to Pandora.

(thunder rumbling)

Husband, release me from this prison.

I have decided, Pandora, my rise shall be in stages.

Rivers running red.

Crops turning black.

Water, water everywhere... and not a drop to drink.

(loud whooshing)

I was wondering when you were gonna make your last stand, Witness.

Feed, my precious one.

Hidden One: Enough of this!

Feed as you never have before.

Impossible.

Crane: No... just highly improbable.

Which, as luck would have it, is our stock in trade.

(grunts)

No.

I will not allow it.

Abbie: What's wrong?

You had him on the ropes.

It cannot draw any more energy.

In order to stop him, you know what it needs, Abbie.

You're resisting.

You're holding on to hope.

It hungers for the light at the center of your being.

It needs... a binding agent to hold the darkness together, Abbie.

He's getting his power back.

It needs the rest of your Eternal Soul.

In the Catacombs, Abbie, you b*at it.

The Box didn't finish.

Because you closed it before it could.

Yes.

Pandora: Open it.

Give it what it needs.

Only you can do this, Abbie.

Crane: No.

There has to be another way.

He will k*ll us all.

Open it.

Save the world, Abbie.

No, Abbie!

Pandora: Yes.

Yes.

Let it speak to you.

Give it your strength.

Give it your hope.

Give it your life!

(loud rumbling)

Abbie!

Crane...

...never give up hope.

Abbie...

Abbie, no!

Feeling contrite, I imagine.

Beg for forgiveness.

Beg for your life.

(raspy breathing)

I would do whatever you ask.

That was for Joe.

How dare you.

This was my victory, not yours.

Pandora.

The thr*at is over.

Now... wherever this container took Abbie, return her.

I'm through being ordered around.

No, no.

We retrieved this Box for you.

We gave you everything you asked.

And now you can be the first to worship me.

The Hidden One is dead.

I have his power now.

I won't ask much of my followers, only that they serve me, obey me, and as is fitting, fear me.

What did you do to my sister?

I had no recourse but to use her spirit to reform the Box, pushed to the edge as I was.

You used us.

We used each other.

Let's call it even.

Damn you.

Damn you!

No, Crane, wait.

We need her... to get Abbie back.

My husband let power go to his head.

I won't make the same mistake.

I don't want to destroy this world.

I quite like it.

As long as I am obeyed, I will be a benevolent goddess.

(snaps fingers)

Tell me it's not true.

Abbie did what she did to save us all.

So she's just gone?

Just like that?

Crane: No.

Not gone.

But she is trapped in an infernal Box.

We have brought her back from purgatory, from the Catacombs, and we will free her again now, today.

If she's trapped inside the Box, how do we get her out?

Pandora's the cause; she is the solution.

She controls the Box.

She can release the lieutenant.

How do we twist her arm when she's stolen the power of a god?

'Tis not the only power she stole.

Jenny: The Blavatsky Map.

It locates monsters.

'Tis time we fought fire with fire.

Ezra: Mr. Crane.

I didn't get a chance to say the words you spoke at Abbie's service were quite lovely...

We don't have much time, Crane.

Abigail's death has set wheels in motion, and you need all the information I can give you.

There must always be two Witnesses.

When one dies, their soul does not move on.

It's eternal.

Wait, wait.

Abbie told me this.

It wasn't a dream.

Mr. Mills, if there's a chance she lives...

No, no, it doesn't work like that.

Not as I understand it.

The essence of a Witness's soul finds someone from their extended bloodline and sparks a new Witness.

So Abbie's Eternal Soul lives on... in someone else.

Find her before they do.

They'll come for you, Crane.

And they'll be looking for her, too.

Who?

This is from President Washington.

This is dated 1789.

"This Letter of Mark and Reprisal empowers me... as First President of these United States, to appoint Captain Ichabod Crane Commanding Officer."

This being the Crane I met in the Catacombs, not the Crane who is said to have d*ed on the b*ttlefield in 1781.

Hundreds of years from now, the man we know and love will be the last of the Founding Fathers, carrying on what we have built.

"Captain Crane is to lead this organization. His sworn duty, to stand guard against all threats deemed otherworldly."

George Washington founded a secret organization to battle the supernatural.

His intentions were noble.

They're not all bad men, though many have lost their way.

(tires screeching)

Forgive them... for they know not what they do.
