Previously on "12 Monkeys"...

Because of you, my friend is on a mission, and now I'm having these nightmares.

Someone is gonna die.

Deacon.

Ready to get the hell out of here?

Aah!

There is no way anybody could have survived this.

Butterfly.

That wasn't there before.

What is it?

Our way home.

I didn't come here to k*ll the Witness.

I came here to k*ll his mother.

The Witness...

is your son.

Olivia told Ramse.

She knows.

It's why he came after you.

- It's why I had to...

- I'm so sorry.

According to Dr. Railly and Mr. Deacon, at some point in the next year, this facility will be destroyed.

Destroyed?

- How?

- You tell us.

You're the new head of security.

We don't know how or exactly when, which only exacerbates the urgency of our mission.

Once again, we are running out of time.

You spent months in Titan with the enemy.

What can you tell us?

They knew we'd go to Titan.

They were waiting to take him from me.

I was kept in isolation...

by a man who eventually let me escape.

Did you see anyone besides this man and the acolytes who tried to stop you from escaping?

I saw four of them.

They splintered him away, Cole.

Our son.

They're guarding him...

from us.

Listen, in a minute, you're gonna have to go in there.

Jones is gonna want you to tell her everything.

- Okay.

- Don't.

Did you encounter the Witness?

We were moving through time, waiting for him to return to Titan.

Return?

She tried to pull me off the mission for being emotionally compromised.

Cole...

if Ramse had k*lled me before you and I met, no Witness, no plague.

No.

This is our problem.

We'll figure it out.

Until then, no one can know.

No one.

Dr. Railly... in all your time in Titan, were you ever able to discover the identity of the Witness?

Learn his origin?

No.

You guys can take a break.

I got this.

Cameras.

I rebooted it.

You got six minutes.

Dr. Railly...

it's good to see you.

You bounce back quickly.

You sent Ramse to k*ll me.

I sent him to k*ll the Witness.

You've always known?

Just a suspicion...

but when James returned without his brother...

proof.

You haven't told Katarina, have you?

Smarter than I give you credit for...

- What do you want?

- Answers.

Just like you.

I devoted my life to your son's will.

He promised a world without pain, without death.

Yet here we are.

Your "House of Cedar and Pine," it was about his life, not mine.

He lied.

I want to know why.

And we're just supposed to trust you're gonna keep all this to yourself, huh?

What's your other option?

The three of us are now unified in purpose...

to find the Witness.

I have a way to do that.

I will never believe a word you say.

My word is verifiable.

How?

I believe Jennifer is working on that as we speak.

Word.

What is that?

Our next mission...

should you choose to accept it.

And I thought this day could not deliver any worse news.

And here we go.

You want to find the Witness, kids?

I know how!

When I was a kid, I used to keep a diary...

all the rules I wanted to break and all the wacky shenanigans needed for success.

But...

I'd always, always get caught.

I'd go and do a thing, and there she'd be, Mommy-not-so-dearest.

How did she know?

Hmm!

My diary.

Turns out, I was writing about the future in the past tense...

#PrimaryProblems.

What's your point, Ms. Goines?

The Witness also kept a diary.

Seen it with my own eyes in Monkey Mansion.

It's like their bible, from Genesis to Revelation back to Genesis again.

This led us to Titan.

Ramsey tore that off a document - in Berlin.

- Ah.

So you all have been chasing the Monkeys for years, but this word is your chance to get ahead of them?

We'd have to go back to Berlin.

If we went back there and stole it, we would never have the piece to locate Titan in the first place.

- Hmm.

- What about after?

Kirschner's lab would be too heavily guarded.

So no before, no after...

What about between the lab and Monkey Mansion?

Kirschner's daughter would know.

- Hmm.

- We should ask her.

Way ahead of you, Jonesy.

Sit back and enjoy the tale of...

the Word of the Witness...

A combo platter of history and prophecy, a fruit smoothie of will, was, and woulda-coulda-shoulda.

Everything you always wanted to know about the Witness, but didn't know how to ask.

When the Army of the 12 Monkeys fled Germany, they couldn't leave their manifesto behind, but were afraid to move it through official channels.

So it was smuggled out of Germany in the frame of an antique painting...

"Constance." But "Constance" was stolen and lost to The Monkeys for nearly three decades until it resurfaced at an auction house in 1989.

That's when Olivia...

bought it and brought it to Monkey Mansion.

as*ault on Monkey Mansion?

Storm the castle?

I like it.

I want in.

Uh-uh, too risky.

Causality snafus up the wazoo.

But I got a better plan.

The Colby-Adams Metropolitan Auction House...

incredibly posh, unbelievably snobbish.

The year...

1989!

If you're pulling a heist, I want in.

Okay, fine.

This place is for rich assholes.

While Deacon might have the assh*le part down pat, none of us pass for rich.

But you have me, Otter Eyes.

How are you gonna help us, Jennifer?

It's 1989.

You're four.

No sh*t.

Hello, Caroline Markridge.

Wealthy heiress, compulsive shopper, borderline hoarder.

How are you?

- You're posing as your mother?

- Yes!

I tell them I want to sell off my collection of...

whatever teacups, antique spoons, those dolls with the creepy eyes that follow you, and insist on seeing their security protocols.

Next, we get the lay of the land.

Come back after dark, and then...

Scooby-Doo tiptoe style through the storage area, dodge security, find the painting, and steal the Word.

You're forgetting something.

Causality, remember?

We are not stealing it!

We are borrowing it.

You and Cassie take some of Jones' super-duper-splinter-me-now injections, and come back here with the Word and make a copy, while me and Deacon stay back there and make sure nobody notices our Maltese "Constance" is missing its chewy secret center.

Then you make a return splinter to '89, we put the Word back where we found it, Olivia buys the painting...

- Sold.

- ... none the wiser.

Causality intact.

Ms. Goines, that...

is a remarkably cogent plan.

Simple, executable...

I'm impressed.

Cassie and I should go.

The two of us can handle this.

No, no, I believe Ms. Goines and Mr. Deacon can be of assistance.

You should all go.

- What are you waiting for?

- Yes!

This tape will self-destruct in five seconds.

I'm gonna need all your sizes.

I have some costume ideas.

"The House of Cedar and Pine." 1957.

Us.

That's how Olivia knew.

Everything is on that document.

- If anyone else sees it...

- They won't.

Whatever it says about us, we'll destroy that part.

Jones will never know.

We just need to get to the painting first.

And if we don't?

You almost d*ed in Titan.

You sure you're up for this?

Somebody's got to watch your back.

Am I the only one getting a weird Cole/Cassie vibe since they got back?

Well, he just lost Ramse.

Right.

My turn.

Ms. Goines...

remember...

your plan...

your mission...

your responsibility.

If it goes awry...

please have the good sense to pull back.

Any other advice, Jonesy?

Don't f*ck up.

A real Tony Robbins, this one.

Initiate splinter sequence.

Follow me, Ms. Markridge.

This is our secure storage area.

Items are only removed from this area for preview and at time of auction.

When that happens, a guard brings the piece from secure storage to the bidding floor, where an auction employee is there to receive it.

Your pieces are never left unattended.

How secure is this...

secure storage?

We expected more vault, less shelving.

I assure you, this entire building is a vault, - Miss...

- Patty, my assistant.

It says here her name is Cassandra.

- It isn't.

- It is.

Maybe...

I go through so many assistants, I don't have time to learn their names.

I have a question about the auction.

We heard you recovered "Constance." Can we get a sneak peak?

How did you know about "Constance?" We haven't announced it yet.

She's a really good assistant.

Unfortunately, I can't give you a preview yet.

The painting is en route from Austria.

But the auction is tomorrow.

It wasn't going to auction.

We had a private collector interested.

But if there is more than one party interested, I have a financial obligation to put it up...

- Uh...

- There is.

Ms. Markridge is definitely interested in "Constance." Excellent.

Well, then I will alert the office, and they can inform the other party.

If you'll excuse me.

What did you just do?

Abort, abort, abort the mission!

Why?

Olivia said she bought it at auction.

It's going to auction.

Olivia said she bought it at an auction house.

She was never at the auction.

Unless, of course, we just screwed that up.

We are doing this, Jennifer.

Calm down, everything will be fine.

I hope we didn't change things.

Thank you for keeping me informed.

I'll alter my plans immediately.

1989...

what a trip.

You know they were playing Genesis in the lobby?

You really shouldn't let Jennifer dress you.

I will have a scotch, neat, with a beer back.

- Here you go.

- Cheers to you.

I got to say, you surprised the hell out of me.

- How's that?

- Hmm.

Ramse...

I didn't think you had it in you.

Ahh.

He's dead, and you did not fire up the machine to go and save him.

So much for the bromance.

That's how he wanted it.

Old José grew a conscience in his final moments?

Color me surprised.

He did what he thought was right.

Bullshit.

He's no martyr.

His whole "I'm gonna k*ll the world to save my son"...

- Selfish prick.

- Shut your mouth.

Please.

He barely knew that kid.

It's probably for the best because Ramse was not a good guy.

None of us are.

Sam would've turned out the same way.

I'm not gonna tell you again.

Poor, poor Ramse.

Are you mad because the Monkeys put a b*llet in him or because you didn't have the stones to do it yourself?

Hey!

What the hell is going on?

Nothing.

Good.

Because we have a problem.

The painting's not here yet.

It's not gonna arrive until right before the auction.

So we steal it from them before the auction?

No, no, no!

Olivia could get suspicious.

She needs to buy the painting, and never know we were here.

Okay, we just need to figure out another way to get it.

Or we reconsider the idea of an armed as*ault.

Jennifer's right.

It's too risky.

We don't even know what's on this thing.

This is the only record of the Witness...

where he's been, what he's done.

We know what he's done.

We don't need to get to know him.

We just need to stop him.

Okay, guys, "Heat"!

"Inside Men." "Ocean's Eleven." Ah...

"Thomas Crown Affair." Wait!

We need a Trojan horse!

Smuggle ourselves into the building tonight.

So we're already in place before the painting shows up in the morning.

Sneaking around like that gives us a much smaller window...

minutes, maybe.

I am not signing up for any plan that has me hiding inside anything.

I am done with small spaces.

Okay, fine.

You and Jennifer can go in through the front door.

We're gonna need a distraction.

You buy us as much time as possible.

Once we have the Word, Jones will pull you back.

Guess that leaves you and me.

So where do we get the horse?

How many antique cars does your father have?

Enough to need a warehouse.

He likes to collect things, keep them locked up.

Was it weird?

Pretending to be your mother?

I didn't have to go all Method or anything.

That'd require me being 100% more homicidal.

We could change that...

for you.

It's 1989.

Your mother tries to drown you in '91.

We could warn someone, maybe get you some help.

I don't know who I'd be if I wasn't the kid whose mom tried to k*ll her.

Sort of a defining moment in one's life, you know.

What about you?

All this time traveling...

you ever think of going back to see your mom...

get that good-bye?

Lately, I find myself missing the talks we never got to have.

There's a lot I wish I could ask her.

Here we go.

Oh, my daddy's gonna be so pissed.

No, I'm sorry, ma'am.

I got nothing.

But I was just here this afternoon.

Yeah, I see that, but nobody told us that you guys were auctioning off a car, okay?

I can't let something through without the proper paperwork.

It's got to go back.

Well, it can't.

I can't drive stick.

Night blindness.

Sun's down.

Blind as a bat.

Who'd you say this belonged to?

- Bugsy Seagal.

- Siegel.

Mobster, bootlegger, criminal visionary.

- Founded Las Vegas.

- Uh-uh Oh, I hear that Warren Beatty is gonna do a film about him.

- I'd see that.

- Yeah.

Might even bid on the car.

Sal, maybe we should call somebody.

Maybe we should talk about it in the office.

We can't go now.

There's people here.

I know we can't.

You never call somebody.

That's how you lose your job.

Call somebody!

You call them, and you call them now!

You call them, or else I'm gonna start calling someone because I have a cotillion to go to!

Sal, hot lady's got a cotillion to go to.

I don't even know what a cotillion is.

A cotillion's a formal ball, especially one where debutantes are presented.

No, it is not.

- I...

- I think you should not call anybody.

- No, you call them!

- The problem is...

- Call!

Call!

- She gets upset, - then the drinking...

- Call them on the phone!

- then the hitting.

- She's saying to call somebody.

He's saying not to call somebody.

I got a mortgage to pay, all right?

- I got a wife...

- Take it easy!

- Call someone!

Call someone!

- The drinking...

We're on the same team!

Okay!

Okay!

The car stays!

That's the new rule that I made.

My prerogative, okay?

Everybody's happy.

God bless.

No calls are being made!

We'll deal with it in the morning.

It was a pleasure doing business with you.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

You know what?

That tall drink of water...

- I could take him out.

- You couldn't take him out.

If things went down, I knew you had my back.

Jesus.

Don't these assholes ever leave?

You okay?

Yeah.

We've been in smaller spaces before.

When?

Our bed in '59...

that tiny, thin mattress.

Squeaked.

You remember all that, huh?

Why didn't you tell me?

I know...

the storms were coming.

And that timeline...

that...

life had to be erased, but...

we could've done it together.

I didn't want to put you through all that.

If I hadn't remembered on my own, would you have told me what we lost?

You didn't need to know.

I got time to do a quick sh*t?

- How long do you need?

I mean...

- A three.

- Three?

Hours?

- Yeah.

No, no.

Three hours?

You said three.

What were you gonna do?

A number three?

What's a number three?

Pee and sh*t at the same time...

two plus one equals three.

I never heard it before.

That's why I asked you.

You ever do a four?

Once by accident...

LaGuardia Airport, 1982.

They're leaving.

You rest up, I'm gonna go keep watch.

Hey, Cole?

You can't take this all on yourself.

It's not your fault.

Yes, it is.

You didn't know me before.

Before we met, I k*lled people for nothing..

for scraps.

Families.

I did whatever I had to do.

But you did it to survive.

Did I?

I just k*lled the only conscience I've ever had.

And now I find out that the man behind the apocalypse is my son.

So I get it now.

Get what?

If there's something wrong with him...

something inside that makes him...

he got it from me.

We should give people a chance.

Allow them to leave.

You heard what Cassandra and Deacon said.

This place will be destroyed, no survivors.

We don't know that, and there's still time to find a way to stop it.

We have no idea how much time we have.

It could happen tomorrow, today.

We need to evacuate.

I'm not abandoning our home.

This isn't a home.

It's a laboratory, a bunker.

This is my home!

And I will not be chased from it.

Don't be a selfish, old fool.

Save the lives you can.

I refuse to surrender, to accept that this is the world that we deserve!

Move on!

The machine cannot be moved!

You're never gonna win an argument with her.

Believe me, I know.

She's so focused on saving the past, she never thinks about the future.

Doesn't sound like there is one.

You went to 2163.

You said the world was dead.

So we're gonna die either way.

Why not go down fighting?

I ever tell you what I wanted to be when I grew up?

Architect.

Told my father I wanted to grow up and...

design my mother her dream house.

Then the plague hit.

And you became a soldier.

Spearhead, this place...

they were never home...

but I-I figured if I couldn't build something...

at least I could protect something.

So I thought.

Knowing the fate of our facility and staying here makes me insane by definition.

Time travel sounded pretty insane, too, when you first told me about it.

It also sounded like hope.

You're already working on another batshit-crazy plan to get us out of this mess, aren't you?

The craziest.

I didn't come here to k*ll the Witness.

I came here to make sure he was never born.

I came here to k*ll his mother.

Ramse, stop!

Wandered around while you were asleep, found the office.

When's the last time you slept?

I'm not sure.

What time is it?

My watch is gone.

Do you see it?

It has to be in here somewhere.

This is the last place.

Well, we have to find it.

Let's, uh, retrace your steps.

These are my steps.

Wait.

I got it.

Hate for it to not be there when you find my corpse.

You're a good man.

I wouldn't have fallen in love with you if you weren't.

Sometimes I think we are just stuck in a loop...

creating the problems we're trying to solve...

- Ramse, Olivia.

- I don't believe that.

We can change things.

You mean him...

our son.

That's why you want to find the Word.

You think you can save him.

Whoa!

I'm having major déjà vu.

Ms. Markridge?

Hello.

I understand you dropped a vehicle by - last evening, to be auctioned off?

- Yes.

You can start the bid at 100,000...

50,000...

10,000, I don't care.

Uh, regardless, there is a significant amount of paperwork needed to verify...

- Oh, radical.

- Radical.

Thank you so much for taking care of this for me.

Uh, no, ma'am.

You don't understand.

Oh, Monty, can you be a lamb?

Oh, I'm Monty.

Uh, look...

Ms. Markridge has a bit of the Brown Bottle Flu, if you know what I mean.

Doing the drinking.

Yeah.

So good news for you...

she will be nursing that hangover with a whole lot of spending.

So what do you say?

Paperwork later?

Good luck out there, ma'am.

You're welcome.

- Oh, no, no, no, no, no...

- Holy sh*t, it's Gozer.

She's not supposed to be here.

And sold...

- to bidder 337... again.

- Yes!

Now, next up, we have a jeweled necklace...

Ooh, sparkly.

Shall we start the bidding at 40,000?

- 45,000!

- 45,000.

- And 50,000?

- 50,000!

Madam, you do realize...

- that you're bidding against yourself?

- 65,000!

Very well.

Sold...

to bidder 337.

You gonna buy the whole building?

Don't bother me.

I'm stress-bidding.

Maybe they already got it and splintered back.

No, if it was mission accomplished, they would have yanked us back already.

Lights would flicker...

we'd get that not-so-fresh feeling.

- Ooh!

- Ms. Markridge?

I'm sorry, but you've purchased a great deal more than we anticipated.

You've exceeded your credit limit.

Okay, then raise it.

We simply can't raise it.

- We need to call your...

- Well, then call!

Call!

I don't care who you call.

What are you doing here?

Call!

And sold again...

- to bidder 337.

- Yes!

Of course, I appreciate that these people have families.

I love families.

I'm a family man, which is why I know they make terrific leverage.

So, unless your team wants to go home and explain...

Hold on, I got another call.

Yeah?

My wife?

Oh, my wife's in L.A.

at some bullshit new-age I-Ching Tarot card retreat.

Lust or must?

Do you think that's an armadillo or an aardvark?

How much?

Sold.

Sold.

Sold again, once more to 337.

If she even so much as drops another nickel on your floor...

Yes!

75,000, 75,000!

Me, me!

Going two, going two...

Sold to me, yes!

I'm on my way.

Jennifer, we got to go.

Skating lesson's gonna have to wait, okay?

- Yes!

- No!

Hey!

Don't blame me.

Blame your mother.

Oh, dude, about the thing last week...

That must be the painting.

My second cousin...

turns out she know papier-mâché, so she patched it up.

Nobody knew the difference on it.

All right.

I put "To Paul, best wishes." Watercolor era.

Franco-Prussian.

That's good art.

I got Connie.

I'm bringing her down.

"Constance," not Connie.

"Constance." You distract him.

I'll grab it.

I'm told "Constance" just arrived.

I want to see it.

- It's processing.

- Who's my competitor?

Oh, my God, that's the best one yet.

Who's that?

Who is...

Sal, we're waiting.

Ghosts aren't real.

Ghosts aren't real.

Do I have to come down there and get the damn thing myself?

And sold...

- Yes!

- ... again to bidder 337.

Now, up next, we have...

Oh, uh, ladies and gentlemen, up next, we're going to have an intermission.

So please relax, have some refreshments, and we'll resume the bidding shortly.

The bar is open.

Thank God.

Something's wrong.

Go backstage and get me that painting.

- Want to go get some snacks?

- I want to get a drink.

- They probably have snacks at that bar.

- Yeah.

- Whoa!

- Wait, what?

Who is that?

Another personal demon...

my father.

Hello?

Good!

Good reflexes.

- You're on the job.

- Yeah, I'll take it.

Who are you?

Detective, uh, Morrison...

plainclothes, uh, warehouse detail.

- Detective?

- Yeah.

- Security.

- Nice.

Uh, Larry didn't tell you I was coming down?

- No.

- It's, uh...

it's about the car.

What happened to the car?

Stolen.

It was stolen.

Stolen?

I...

You see?

You see what it is?

I trust people.

I knew she was crazy.

She had it right...

right there.

You need to cover me, okay?

Create a distraction.

Throw something or something.

Oh, sh*t!

You...

- I'm sorry, do I know you?

- Not if I can help it.

Is there something wrong with her?

You have no idea.

Excuse me a moment.

All right, everybody!

Be cool!

This is a robbery!

- Please don't sh**t!

- Fine.

Yeah, it's like a formal ball, especially one where debutantes are presented.

Anyway, from one detective to another, I think we need to fire Larry.

Sal, where the hell is "Constance?" Ah, sh*t.

Oof!

Where is it?

Where is it?

There it is.

I got no medical.

sh*t!

It's good to have you back.

Valuables, Pop...

in the bag.

You can at least put your g*n away.

You're frightening my daughter.

Yay!

This is fun!

Are you sure about that?

Christ, Jennifer, can't you be normal for once?

Look...

sparkly.

Listen, kid, I'm gonna tell you something very important, okay?

Your dad...

is an assh*le.

Never forget that.

Olivia was telling the truth.

It's hidden behind the painting.

We just need to go through it, find anything incriminating, tear it out.

No one will ever know.

It's right..

here.

But it's not here.

- It's not here, Cass.

- Yes, I can see that, James.

- Okay, let's just retrace your steps.

- These are my steps!

Where the hell is it, then?

It's okay.

I think I was supposed to go left.

- Aah!

- Oh, my God!

What are you doing here?

Did you see who did this?

There's a barbarian out there, and he's got a g*n, and he's robbing the place blind!

Just stay calm.

Oh, my God!

He's thieving...

and "burglaring"...

and pilfering.

Oh, my God.

Oh!

Oh, boy!

Sorry, sorry, sorry.

I'm sorry.

This is Ms.

Scarlet with the candlestick in the library.

Okay.

911, what's the nature of your emergency?

Hello?

Holy sh*t.

I got it.

I got it.

Ah, yeah.

Let's bring this puppy home.

You brought us here!

They were waiting for you.

They wanted you here.

No beginning.

No end.

Oh, my God.

Jesus Christ, what the hell is the holdup?

Why are we still here?

You got our money, pal.

Have you existential crisis somewhere else.

Oh, sh*t.

Police!

- Come on.

- Where are we going?

To find your mother.

Come on.

I got to say...

you look just like her.

Even got my wife's whole...

crazy-eyes thing going.

I do.

You know, I came up working in places like this...

hating people like me...

pocket-broke, rich in ambition, waiting my turn.

No.

I'm not like you.

What is the play?

Your friend out there is the distraction while you grab a couple Monets?

Not really an oil painting kind of girl.

Charcoal's more my thing.

That's good.

They don't let you use oils in prison.

Cleaning agents are combustible.

I'm gonna have you locked up.

But I'm gonna survive it.

My life's so much bigger now.

And one day...

you're gonna die.

And that'll be the day when she really starts to live.

Ah!

Aah!

Come on.

I'm a businessman.

I'm sure we can make a deal.

Let's go, Dad...

Dad...

Daddy-o.

Okay, Egg, listen up.

You're gonna see something weird, but don't be scared, okay?

Okay, Chicken.

See you soon, kiddo.

Whoa.

Jennifer, honey?

Open the door.

Jennifer?

Come on, open the g*dd*mn door!

We're out of time.

Let's find Deacon and Jennifer.

Ugh!

Someone's activated the tethers.

Ah, sh...

Let's go.

Jones!

You have to send us back.

We couldn't get it.

Not to worry.

Ms. Goines made us a copy.

This is fascinating.

I had to improvise.

Good thing I wound up in a room with a copy machine.

It's all there.

- We should come clean.

- We can't.

Hey.

We don't have a choice.

Jones...

What the hell is this?

Oops.

Making copies, making copies...

Whoa, uh...

I guess my hand slipped.

I'm sorry, Jones.

I effed up.

Hell, no.

Of this foursome, we definitely were the two that did not screw up.

What the hell happened to you guys backstage?

I'm sure they were dealing with a lot.

We know more about the Witness and the Army of The 12 Monkeys than we could have hoped for.

Well done, Ms. Goines.

Causality crisis averted.

Cycle maintained.

Come here.

I want you to wear this.

I don't believe in fate...

in cycles or loops...

but if it is all true and one day you find me wearing this at the CDC...

Cassie, this...

As long as it's on your wrist...

it means we'll always find our way back to each other.

Wearing this...

means that somehow, someway...

you're always gonna find your way back to her.

Sometimes I think we are just stuck in a loop.

No matter what.

The Witness...

he's your son.

_ Allow us to introduce you to... the Witness.
