Previously on When Calls the Heart..

I don't like the way I've behaved lately,

especially when it comes to our friendship.

Friends remain friends.

People are starting to talk about us.

And I said let 'em talk.

I bought this at Christmas but Faith wasn't able to come back for the holidays so it's been just sitting in my pocket ever since.

CLARA: His name's Wyman Walden.

JESSE: That was the man who stole mine and Clara's savings.

Stop!

Stop!

I now pronounce you husband and wife.

Thank you.

They're for you.

Is this...

It's Florence's bridal bouquet.

Yeah, she wanted you to have them.

I just can't avoid these, can I?

You look cold.

I've got the kettle on if you'd like...

Ye... yeah, that'd be nice.

Thank you.

I was just about to head out on my rounds.

I can't find my gloves.

Oh, I might have an old pair of Jack's if you'd like me to look...

No.

No, it's...

it's fine.

I'll be fine after I warm up.

Then while we're waiting on the kettle why don't you take off your serge?

Hmm?

So I can warm it up for you.

Oh, um...

yeah, that would be nice.

How did you come to have this?

Um, well, you uh, you left the wedding early and Florence forgot to throw the bouquet so on her way out of town she asked me to give them to you.

Thank you.

Isn't Florence due home today from her honeymoon?

Yes.

I forgot to give them to you.

I remembered when I saw her at the mercantile.

I used to do this for Jack on chilly mornings.

That was very nice of Florence.

It's a beautiful bouquet.

Yeah, it is.

I guess she thought that you were the next one to be married.

This is probably ready now.

Yeah, I should probably head back, get on with my rounds.

Yeah, this feels better.

Well, thank you for warming me up.

Thank you for the flowers.

[EXHALES]

[THEME MUSIC] ♪

All right.

May I have a kiss goodbye, please?

- What's up?

- No?

How about a wave, then?

Nothing?

He's getting independent.

That's one word for it.

Thank you so much for covering for Laura, Robert.

I know this is your first time alone with Jack, so if you need me don't hesitate to find me at the school.

Yes, ma'am.

But you have no need to worry.

I'm always the right man for the job.

[LAUGHS]

Henry.

Heard from your son lately?

Well, he's... he's written me twice, which is twice more than I expected.

Making up for lost time, I guess.

I suppose so.

What about you?

I hear one rumor that you're staying and the other that you're leaving.

Have you ever had something tug at you so hard that you knew that no matter what you did it's only a matter of time before you gave in?

Indeed I have.

All I've ever wanted is to be a surgeon.

I can't do that here.

The offer that I received from Baltimore is just too good to turn down.

So you're leaving then?

I'd forever feel like I settled if I stay.

And that'd be no good to anybody.

Even Faith, who believes even more than I do that I should go.

The only thing to do now is ask her to marry me and have her come along.

Good luck, Carson.

Ready to go for our last ride, bud?

Aw, why the long face?

- [CHUCKLES]

- Carson knows how you feel.

What makes you think he'll ask you to marry him and move to Baltimore?

It was Florence and Ned's wedding.

Ah.

Weddings can be an aphrodisiac.

There's love, or at least romance in the air, and before you know it everyone's proposing to anyone.

[LAUGHS]

That happened to me once.

You were engaged?

We met at the wedding of a mutual friend.

We were head over heels for each other at the beginning, but...

people change.

He's the reason I went home.

He'd been asking my family about me and I guess a part of me wanted to see if there was still a connection, but...

contrary to what my parents may have wished for, nobody can buy my affection.

So I ended things for good.

Wow.

How do you feel now?

[SIGHS]

Like I can breathe again.

Like...

I'm open to finding love.

- [GRUNTS]

- What are you talking about?

Well, it's no secret that Jesse and I have had our own struggles.

And you think Ned and I are experiencing marital discord?

You're the only one returning from your honeymoon.

I'm just letting you know my shoulder is available.

Clara, as much as I appreciate the gesture, as I told you Ned stayed behind to attend to some business.

Uh-huh.

[GRUNTS]

Don't say I didn't try.

Put this on the café's account?

- You bet I will.

- Mmm-hmm.

Good day.

I'm glad you enjoy working in the café the way you do.

Oh, I do, especially today.

What's special about today?

We're moving and Joseph is unloading that wagon without me.

Well, I can certainly give him a hand with that.

Oh, Bill, that isn't necessary.

It'd be no problem at all.

Oh, let me help you with that.

Oh, I have it.

In fact, it seems like it's almost gotten lighter.

- Uh-oh.

- What?

You sprang a leak.

Oh!

I'll get the broom and the dust pan.

Could you spare me for a few minutes?

I'll be right back.

Of course.

Minnie?

[DOOR OPENS, CLOSES]

- You be safe.

- I will.

- Ok.

All right.

- I will.

See ya.

Lee, let me ask you something.

He's always driving like he's an hour late to get somewhere.

Take it easy on that accelerator, ok?

Slow down!

Morning, Minnie.

Ok.

How far do you think it is from town to the Canfield's old cabin, hmm?

Uh, I don't know, I'd say maybe two or three miles.

Oh.

I wish Jesse had taken a horse instead of my car.

Never listens to me.

Anyway, I gotta get to work.

What is a Wyman Walden?

Wyman Walden.

It's the man Jesse said stole all their savings.

Right.

Right.

I just assumed, because it was here on my desk, that maybe it had something to do with my work.

Oh.

Hmm.

Listen, sweetheart, would you mind if I put your notepad right here?

Well, of course not.

It is your office.

Mmm.

Is this the map that I was working on?

Oh, no.

I put that over on your desk so I'd have more room for the map that I'm reading.

- Mmm-hmm.

- Mmm-hmm.

Hmm?

- LEE: Ah.

- Oh.

Uh...

Oh, whoops.

Wrong plug.

Sorry.

Mmm.

I could use a little light.

Mmm.

Mmm-hmm.

Ok!

Lee?

I'm gonna go talk to Joseph.

Oh.

Mmm-hmm.

Yep.

Are you sure you don't wanna take a break?

Have lunch with me?

I can't, Lucas.

I'm sorry.

Here, allow me.

I'm not very good company right now, I'm sorry.

You're working, I understand.

I just... I thought I'd come by on a whim.

Lucas, the reason I left the wedding early?

I asked Nathan if he would step outside with me so I could tell him that I don't blame him for Jack's death.

Why didn't you come back inside after?

I had no intention of bringing this up.

You didn't even say goodbye.

I don't know why I...

Nathan and I...

He's back.

The school inspector.

I'll let you two talk.

Minnie.

Mr. Landis is here?

In the café, having breakfast.

Augustus comes by at the start of every school year to...

to feel important.

But he really has no authority here so there's nothing for you to worry about.

Are you certain?

Angela's heart will be broken if she doesn't start the school year with the other students.

I promise you.

Everything is going to be fine.

Thank you.

[SIGHS]

Joseph, I could really use your help.

- We could, too.

- Oh, but my back...

There are some lighter items.

Listen, I don't wanna have to beg but I will if I have to.

It just... when I get down on my hands and knees...

Your back, your back.

We know, your back.

I'd have to give Lucas some time to find a replacement, but I'd very much like to come work with you.

Oh, that's fantastic!

You won't regret it, I promise.

I wouldn't be so sure.

Listen, I gotta get back to the office but you are gonna do great things at Coulter Lumber, I just know it.

See you later!

Lee!

Hey!

MR. LANDIS: You do.

You create a warm and inviting schoolhouse for your students.

I try, Mr. Landis.

Is there a reason that you're here?

I have a lot to get done.

Do you regard me as so unwelcome that the few times I stop by you...

you can't wait for me to leave?

I don't regard you as unwelcome, I just...

I am protective of my school and of my students, and to be perfectly honest with you, I have no desire to become a part of the Valley School District.

I understand, but as the area begins to grow, as it is already happening- My schoolhouse can accommodate at least another dozen students.

Which is well below the or so students we are expecting next year.

How is that possible?

Right here in the County's Board of Education report.

I'm staying overnight at the Queen of Hearts if you have any questions.

Good day.

Hmm.

Oh, never mind, Florence, he just walked in.

Thank you.

Lee, how would you like to drive out to the Canfield's old cabin with me, hmm?

They already moved.

- Yes, I know, but...

- Sweetheart, did you rearrange stuff?

Oh, yes.

I hope you don't mind.

So, would you like to take a drive with me?

We gave Jesse the car, remember?

Oh, rats.

Well, I guess I'll have to ride.

I haven't been on a horse in quite some time.

I suppose it's like riding a bike.

You never forget.

Care to join me, hmm?

As much as I would love to, I really do need to get some work done.

Oh, well, c'est la vie.

I wanna go out and see if I can find any clues as to what's going on with all these business and real estate transactions.

No one seems to know what's what and, well, it's just the darnedest thing.

Mmm.

Darnedest thing.

- Oh.

- After you.

Thank you.

Hi.

- Have a seat.

- Oh.

Wow.

I'm gonna ask Minnie about the specials.

Be right back.

Minnie, I'm here with Faith.

Yes.

- Oh.

- I'm finally ready to propose.

But I need your help surprising Faith.

What did you have in mind?

Ok.

Here's what I'm thinking...

I think this is it.

Oh, my goodness.

Really?

Clara, what do I do?

Wait, what are we talking about?

I think Carson's about to propose.

Oh, my goodness.

Really?

This is what he gave me.

Bill, I need you to find a way to stop this from happening.

Just give me a moment.

You know, I glanced over the file if you need me to tell you what it says.

- Are you an attorney?

- No.

Isn't that why you came to me?

- Yes, but...

- A moment?

You know, the County has been trying to bring our school under its juri...

Why don't I... give you a moment?

I have a town business owner's meeting in a bit.

I'll get back to you just as soon as possible.

Thank you, Bill.

Yes, I know the previous owners.

Who did you say owns it now?

Have a nice day, ma'am.

Ya!

There you are.

Where have you been?

Is there a problem?

Yeah, that man Jesse tried chasing down, the one who ran off with his and Clara's money, he's back in town.

Where is he?

The saloon.

Here's his business card.

You got his business card?

Yeah.

Let's go.

I do appreciate your time as business owners, but I do believe that what I have to say will be more than worth your while.

Mr. Walden?

Wyman Walden?

Yes, Constable.

Come with me, please.

Folks, to be continued.

My job offer still stands.

This is not my fault!

No one's saying it is.

Please tell me you've found it.

We're still looking.

I have been carrying that ring in my pocket for over a month and now that I'm finally ready to give it to Faith it disappears?

It hasn't disappeared.

You're right.

It's lost.

The pudding!

Minnie said she left the ring right there on the sideboard where I took the sugar down to make the pudding.

Oh!

Carson?

- Faith.

- What are you doing?

Having some dessert?

He loves Clara's pudding.

He really does.

I just saw Rosemary head into the infirmary so I'm gonna go see what's wrong.

I will be right behind you.

Please, find the ring.

I'm a simple business man out of Union City.

- No.

No, not funny.

Any pain when I press here?

No, but I did hit the ground with quite a wallop.

That must have been quite frightening.

I should have been there with you.

It could have been much worse.

You're right, it could have been.

[DOOR OPENS]

- What happened?

- ROSEMARY: I fell off my horse.

That is not true, you did not fall off your horse.

Some goon fired a warning sh*t into the air and spooked your horse.

I'm fine, just a little shaken.

Where did this happen?

At the Canfield's old cabin.

There were three men there.

You can't miss them, they're Pinkertons.

Hello?

Flo?

Everything all right?

Oh, he uh, took a couple of days to himself.

That explains it.

Florence, do you mind if I go in the back and use the telephone?

Not at all.

Here you are.

Thank you so much.

This is Fiona Miller from Hope Valley.

I'd like to place a call to San Francisco.

Yes, thank you.

Given current census numbers against projected growth, the County is citing their imminent domain when it comes to re-districting.

Bill, you've already pointed out I'm not an attorney.

The County can shut you down.

When?

Well, it'd be a while.

They need the students to justify their position.

Now, the town council can handle this if it becomes an issue but you have a more immediate problem.

I do?

Buried in this document is a subsection stating that you need to be credentialed in order to teach children who are blind.

I take it you're not credentialed?

No, but I will be.

Elizabeth, if you start the school year out with Angela Canfield in your class, the way I read it, they can remove you immediately.

Who will teach the children?

Well, the Board would find another teacher or maybe close the school down.

Until this goes to trial, other arrangements would have to be made.

I can tell already I can't stand these County people.

Anyway, if you choose to fight this just know I'll be right next to you every step of the way.

Thank you, Bill.

- Good afternoon.

- Mountie.

It's Constable Grant.

Special Officer Spurlock.

I don't suppose you know anything about a woman being thrown from her horse?

There was an incident earlier.

A young woman rode up and my deputy fired a warning sh*t.

Unfortunately, the horse was skittish and she was thrown.

Do you know how she's doing?

Was the warning sh*t necessary?

I have an eager beaver over there.

Perhaps asking her to leave might have been more appropriate.

I don't tell you how to do your job.

This is private property and we've been hired to look after it.

I don't suppose you'd tell me by who.

Are you and I headed for trouble?

You can count on it.

Here you are.

[STARTLED GASP]

Lucas.

Is everything all right?

I'm not sure.

Would you excuse me?

Of course.

Mr. Landis.

Can we talk?

I like getting in at least one walk a day, Mrs. Thornton, and I'm hoping to finish this one before it begins raining.

Are you expecting rain or just a difficult conversation with me?

You take the time you need, Mrs. Thornton.

I want you to make the case that you wish to present.

This is about your proposal.

The County Board of Education's proposal.

I'm simply the one charged with its implementation.

If someday the Jack Thornton school is required to come under the County's jurisdiction...

Which would be for the benefit of the students.

Then I think we should start working together now to ensure it is for the students' benefit.

And that means each and every one of them, Mr. Landis.

Mrs. Thornton, you may think of me as merely a bureaucrat but I was a teacher once, too.

And now I do this job because I wanna see children receiving the best education possible.

Good.

Good.

Look, I will be credentialed to teach Angela Canfield just as soon as the examination is offered in the area again.

I'm sure you will.

But my problem is not with you, Mrs. Thornton, so much as it is with her.

Her condition will undoubtedly hold others back, either by you or her fellow students being required to give her extra time, and that cannot be allowed.

[THUNDER ROLLS]

If you wish, Mrs. Thornton, we may speak more about this tomorrow.

You're going to need this.

That's a start.

I think.

[THUNDER ROLLS]

I am so angry.

The injustice of it all!

I don't know about that.

Walden is down the street in the jail.

I would call that justice.

Think about Clara and Jesse, and who knows how many other people he's taken advantage of, hmm?

That reminds me, Jesse's not back yet.

Oh.

Do you know where that liniment is that Faith gave me for my back?

Yeah, I put it on your desk.

- Why, is your back bothering you?

- A little bit.

- Lee?

- Mmm-hmm.

Did you just say this was my desk?

I did.

Because, well, after wondering for so long, I think I know what it is that I want to do.

Please, I am all ears.

I want to start a newspaper.

[CLAPS]

Hah!

That's fantastic.

It's perfect, because you are smart, you're intuitive, you're hardworking...

I couldn't agree more.

Where is Jesse?!

Clara, it would be foolish to head out in this weather tonight.

I'll put together a search party and we'll head out at first light.

Clara, I'm gonna walk you back to the café, ok?

All right.

Is that him?

Let's just go.

Come on.

You took our money!

Everything my husband and I worked for.

Ma'am, if I could ask your name?

Clara.

Flynn.

Jesse Flynn.

That's your husband.

Constable, if you'd allow, I'd like to explain my dealings with her husband.

You still haven't found the ring?

No, and in some sort of upside-down way it sums up how I feel about getting ready to leave.

How's that?

A picture perfect town, faithful friends, a wonderful woman, but try as I might, that brass ring eluded me.

[THUNDER ROLLS]

Have you ever felt like that?

A few times.

What'd you do to get past it?

I moved on.

The way it sounds like you are.

Looking for a new way, ready for a fresh start.

So then, Lucas, you think I'm doing the right thing here?

It's not for me to say.

Faith knows I love her.

If she wanted to be married to me she wouldn't need a proposal or a ring.

No, I think that it just wasn't meant to be.
