02x12 - Perfect Storm

Post by bunniefuu »

This is the scene in Boston
at this hour

as the city reels from its
worst winter storm in thirty years.

Eleven inches of snowfall
in the past five hours alone

have left emergency services paralyzed
and most roads closed.

A rare combination of factors...
high winds,

a huge Arctic cold front and a coastal
warm front have come together to form...

what meteorologists are calling
the "perfect storm."

According to the latest
weather service bulletins,

the storm shows
no sign of breaking up...

Lily, did you reach everyone
on second shift?

Yeah, stay home, I told 'em.
Macy's orders.

Good, I got enough crash victims.

I don't want our people
adding to the count.

You look exhausted, Garret.
You should take a break.

No rest for the wicked, not when
we're down to a skeleton crew...

no pun intended.

Mmm.
Well, why can't that new guy help out?

Doctor Winslow,
he doesn't start 'til tomorrow.

Are you sure?
'cause I just saw him.

What?

Where?

In the break room.

Doctor Macy,
looks like I'm marooned here.

Well, join the club.

Ted, listen, I'm a little
underwater right now...

But since I'm in the neighborhood, uh,
how are we doing on medical supplies?

We're still overstocked
from your last visit.

Right.

Uh, meantime,

here's a... a little gift
for a valued client.

Enjoy.

Thanks.

Come on.

Hey, what's up, Doc?

What are you doin'?

Oh, I'm trying to
break this losing streak.

No, I mean, didn't I give you
your start date as tomorrow?

Yeah, yeah.

So I just came down here to pick up
my parking pass and my photo ID

and then now with this storm,

I guess I'm stuck here, huh?

So you're just wiling away the hours
with your game, huh?

Aw.

Oh, yeah, I mean, there's not much else
to do around here, right?

That's a nice watch.

Thank you.

You drive a nice car, too.

What is it, a Mercedes?
Porsche?

- Well, it's a BMW.
- BMW.

I bet you wonder how a guy like you
wound up in a place like this, right?

You know what?
I was thinking the same thing.

I'll tell you what, once this weather breaks,
why don't you take your watch,

get in your BMW and get outa here.

If this weather breaks at the...

I'm sorry, how exactly
did you mean that?

I don't need someone here
who thinks this job is beneath them.

Oh, I don't think that at all.

Right now, I've got ten people
doing the work of fifty.

Did it ever even occur to you
to offer a hand?

Um, like you said, I don't start
until tomorrow, so I was... I...

What?

Let me spell it out for you.

I expect a guy
who bombed out of his residency

to be a tad more grateful
at being given a second chance.

And frankly,

it's gonna be a lot more trouble
training you

than to hire someone
who knows what he's doin',

so if your heart isn't in this job,
don't do me any favors...

No, Doctor Macy, I want this job.

- I'm telling you to jump, Doctor Winslow!
- I definitely, I need this...

The right answer is, "How high?"

Is this a bad time?

Autopsy #

Hi, Jordan Cavanaugh.

That's Doctor Duchamps.

Hi, Doctor Peter Winslow.
It's good to meet you.

Yeah.

So let's just dive in, shall we?

I will be your tour guide as
we plumb the mysteries of the human body.

Okay.

What do we have here?

Your first patient, a John Doe found in
an alleyway behind the Beaumont Hotel.

We've already run
tox, trace and dental films.

Mm-hm.

So what's your next move?

Perform the Y-incision and
begin internal examination.

You're pretty familiar with
how that goes, I take it?

Yeah.

Then he's all yours.

Yeah, I've always been
a big fan of the old Y-incision.

What is that smell?

Oh, you get used to it.

Hey, is this uh, is this norm...

Doctor Winslow?

Hey.

What happened?

I don't know what the hell happened.

You get through to nine-one-one?

Cell service is down.

Pulse is weak but steady.

I'll go get help.

No, you can't.

What do you mean I can't?

We've got unidentified fluid
leaking from John Doe's body.

Our main concern here
is Doctor Winslow.

But Winslow had a reaction
when he came in contact with that fluid.

We could be dealing with
an infectious agent here.

This man needs
medical attention, Jordan.

Door stays shut, Elaine.

Jordan, what the hell's goin' on?

We may have something loose
in here.

Doctor Winslow cut open a John Doe
and went down.

Okay, stay where you are.

- Garret, this man is no condition to...
- Stay put, both of you!

Yes, and uh, would... would he
have any identifying marks or scars?

Lily, Lily.

Get CDC on the phone.

Uh, excuse me.
CDC, what for?

Just do it, please.

Guys, we have a situation, possible
pathogen exposure in Autopsy One.

Involving whom?

Doctor Winslow, the new hire.

But Jordan and Elaine
are in there, too.

Well, what kind of pathogen?

All I know is what I just told you.

Come on.

We have to initiate
contamination protocols.

He has a fever.

This should help.

He's had a seizure, he's coughed
up blood, there's internal bleeding.

He needs a doctor.

I'm a doctor, so are you.

Have you treated any patients lately?

Me, neither.

We need to get him to a hospital.

If that body's what made him sick, then our
first obligation is to protect outside of this room.

That's one big ass if, Jordan.

Oh, you think?

Look, whatever that black fluid is,

it sure as hell didn't agree
with Doctor Winslow here.

Well, it's not affecting us.

Who's to say it won't?

Immunology one-O-one.

"Onset and severity of symptoms vary
widely from person to person"...

But what disease has
an onset this quick?

I don't know.

But an outbreak can start
from a single contaminated body.

That's a longshot, and I'm not willing
to risk Doctor Winslow's life on that.

Elaine, I think
that ship already sailed.

BIOHAZARD

Jordan.

Gee, Garret, love
what you've done with the place.

Post-modern biohazard.

How you doin' in there?

A lot better than Doctor Winslow.

Listen, I want you
to bag John Doe's body.

Seal it up as best you can.

Any idea what we're
dealing with here, Garret?

We're working on that.
I've been on the phone to CDC.

We'll get this squared away, alright?

We may as well get started.

For their safety, I'm having the staff wait
in the main conference room 'til we sort this out.

I want to give you
the same opportunity.

We're not leaving.

Okay.

Okay, here's where we are.

Based on circumstances,

the CDC says we should treat this as
a possible case of viral hemorrhagic fever.

Are you talking about Ebola?

There are a variety of VHF's.

Ebola's one of 'em, and nobody's
saying that's what this is.

Just we have to proceed with caution.

But Doctor Winslow couldn't
just get ill on contact.

Apparently, he could if he had
an allergic reaction to the virus...

and his symptoms are consistent with
early stage VHF.

And the good news is it's mainly
a blood and fluid-borne virus.

So chances of airborne
transmission are low.

The bad news is that
in addition to Doctor Winslow,

Jordan and Elaine have both
been exposed to the open body.

Well, we need to get them
to a hospital.

How do we do that?

By helicopter.

I've ordered an HMMT unit
to chopper 'em out.

HMMT units are staffed by med techs
trained to handle biohazard situations.

That's great.

Problem is they're based in Baltimore.

Baltimore?

They'll never be able to get here,
not in this weather.

That's why it's up to us
to get a handle on this right now.

That John Doe is the likely vector.

Lily, find out who he is,
where he went.

Did he travel to Africa,
South America,

any place he could have come in
contact with these viruses.

Bug, Nigel, get blood from Doctor Winslow
and send it to CDC for analysis.

Let's get to it, come on.

His blood's still flowing.

That's a good sign.

Jordan.

Hey,

Doctor Winslow.

Peter.

What happened?

I fall down?

Yeah, sort of.

How do you feel?

Awful.

What's with all the plastic?

It's kind of a precautionary thing.

Why are we in isolation?

You don't need to
worry about that right now.

Some sort of contamination out there?

Well, is it in here?
What uh...

What is it?

Listen, no one knows
anything for sure.

Well, someone thinks it's pretty bad
if they shrink-wrapped the room.

Peter, you need to stay calm.

Wait, that guy.
I cut that guy.

Was he infected with something?

That's what we're trying to find out.

God.

Listen to me.

What kinds of symptoms are you having?

All of 'em. I have all of the symptoms
I'm supposed to have.

He passed out.

Can't say I blame him.

It's rather pretty
as blood samples go.

It doesn't look deadly at all.

Maybe it isn't.

Yeah, that gets my vote, mate.

CDC says they can tell us
straight away.

Alright, well,
then let's proceed, shall we?

High res image capture,

attached to the CDC e-mail
and bon voyage.

Did you do that?

No.

Wow, this can't be good.

Uh, Garret?

This is where the backup generator's
supposed to kick in.

Power Outage

I don't think it's coming back on.

Has to.

Did the e-mail get sent
before we lost power?

I don't know.

It's coming from this one.

What's going on?!

Think someone may be stuck inside.

Can you get it?

Nah.

Here you go.

Alright.

Careful, it could be an open shaft.

Isn't that one of the guards
from downstairs?

It was.

He's dead.

Garret, can you hear me?

Hey, what's happening out there?

There was a body in the elevator,
one of the guards from downstairs.

Lou Rickard.

Lou. Yeah, w... we know Lou.
What happened to him?

See for yourself.

We've got to test that fluid.

Wait, wait.

You said this body was contaminated.

I'm convinced.

Look, if you're afraid of
getting infected...

It's not about me.

I don't want to expose Peter to more of
what may have made him sick in the first place.

But things aren't getting better, Elaine.

We need a sample of that stuff under
a microscope to see what we're up against.

How?
There's no electricity.

No light source, no image.

I will worry about that
if you prepare a slide.

There you go.

Where'd you get that old thing?

Hey, at least it works.

Okay.

Could you move it more
to the right, please?

Okay.

A little more.

That's it.

Wh... what is it?

Take a look.

Let's make sure we're
both seeing the same thing.

Pleomorphic cells...
and lots of 'em.

Obviously, this is no longer
an isolated incident.

We have two potential victims,
which means there may be more.

Now, without question,
we're in a tough spot here,

made tougher by this storm
boxing us in

without power, phones or information
about when things'll turn around,

but we still have options and steps we can
take to understand and control this disease.

Where are we on John Doe?

Uh, I called missing persons.

There's a Daniel Sleeman
that matches John Doe's description.

They were faxing his picture
when the lights went out.

Had Sleeman traveled
outside the country?

Looks that way.

He was in the merchant marines.

Okay.

Here's the plan.

Lily, I need you...
and Nigel to figure out

if and when Lou Rickard came in
contact with John Doe.

And if he did...

He didn't.

And if he did,
it wasn't what made him sick.

Jordan, what are you doing here?

John Doe is clean.

Well, he's not exactly clean,
but he isn't contagious.

That black stuff turned out to be secretions
from cancerous tumors in his chest cavity.

Where's Elaine?

She's with Doctor Winslow.

Jordan, Winslow is still sick.

Even if John Doe isn't,
shouldn't you both be in quarantine?

I am in quarantine.

So are you.

If Lou and Winslow were both exposed
to this, then chances are so were we.

The quarantine area is
no longer Autopsy One.

It's the whole building.

She's right.

Okay, so if Winslow didn't get sick
from John Doe,

how did he catch this?

I don't know.

But the only way to find out is
to learn how, when and where...

Doctor Winslow crossed paths...
with Lou.

I would have thought there'd be more
organ necrosis with hemorrhagic fever.

What?

How'd he get so infected so fast?

Nothing here indicates
how long this took to develop.

The last time you saw Doctor Winslow was
two weeks ago when you interviewed him over lunch.

Right, at Carmichael's.
What about it?

So when he came here today was the first
time he'd ever been to this building.

We don't know that.

Or... or maybe we were wrong.

Maybe Winslow was sick
before he got here.

But that doesn't make any difference.

Of course it does.

Lou Rickard had a time card
in his pocket.

He didn't clock in
until twelve-O-eight this afternoon.

No matter who was ill first,
these two didn't likely meet until noon today.

And now one of them is dead
and the other's dying.

So you're worried we're gonna get sick.

I'm worried
some of us already are.

Hey, guys.

Any news?

Not the kind you were hoping for.

Is it viral hemorrhagic?

I've never seen a VHF case before,
so I can't be sure,

not without the proper lab work.

And we're in the Stone Age here, so...

all I know is the damage it did.

Which was?

Lots of infection, internal bleeding.

Hemoperitoneum from a ruptured
abdominal aneurysm, esophageal rupture.

Not the way anyone would want to go.

Am I on an autopsy table?

I'm sorry,

but the accommodations are limited.

Well, the guests
don't usually complain.

Here.

Come on, you should
drink some water.

Peter,

I have to ask you something.

Have you ever seen this man?

Unh-unh.

Are you sure?

Where's Doctor Cavanaugh?

She left.

That doesn't seem like a good idea.

Why'd she leave?

Another man got sick.

Oh.

The man you just showed me?

Mm-hm.

How is he?

He's dead.

Thank you for not lying to me.

I wish there was something more I could
do for you than just not lie to you.

You've been with me
the whole time, right?

Mm-hm.

I could feel you.

Yeah.

You should sleep now.

I'm so scared.

Don't be.

He was back for a moment.

He didn't seem to recognize Lou.

Well, meanwhile, we still don't know
what's wrong with him

or if the rest of the staff
is at risk.

I've been combing all the medical texts
for all the good that's doin'.

Still nothing.

Have faith.

I can't.
It's against my nature.

That must be scary.

Yeah, it is.

Anyhow, how you holding up?

I'm not the issue here.
Peter is.

Why don't I stay with him
for a while?

- You take a break.
- No-no-no, I'm fine.

I don't need a break.

Elaine, you haven't left this room.

This is where I want to be.

Jordan, are you there?

Nigel, did you find something?

Lou Rickard's log book.

Useless, I'm afraid.

Says he was posted at the loading dock
all day and never left.

Well, nothing here
about Doctor Winslow.

There's a connection
between these two guys.

There has to be.

Well, if there is,
we're not finding it.

We've been through Lou's desk
top to bottom.

Yeah, not to mention his locker,

which hasn't illuminated anything but
his unique taste in p*rn.

Ugh.

Wait a sec.

What?

Found his checkbook.
Let me just um...

Hey, he wrote out a check today
to the Commonwealth Medical Clinic.

Wait, that's here in this building.

Okay, where in the building?

Wait, I'm checking.

Commonwealth Medical Clinic.

Sixth floor.

Doctor Winslow was there.

[font color=CCFF ]C.T.M.

Ugh, not exactly ground zero
for the plague.

Yeah, well, we know
both gentlemen were here.

There must be a reason.

Hello.

Looks like our lad Lou had
an appointment at ten a.m.

But I don't see
Doctor Winslow's name.

Nigel.

Remember what I said about
this not being ground zero?

Maybe I was wrong.

Garret,

we may be on to something.

There's a clinic on the sixth floor
that may be the source of this thing.

I don't think so.

Yeah, why not?

Because I've never been there.

I can't put Doctor Macy's name
up there.

I just can't.

Garret wanted me to tell you
not to worry, that he's fine.

We should all just
"focus on the task at hand."

His exact words.

I'm not exactly sure
how to do that, but...

But we need answers here.

Since he didn't go to the clinic, we need to
rethink our theory on how he got sick.

Well, why does that
even matter anymore?

Because it may help us
identify what he has,

how to treat it and how to keep
other people from getting it.

Okay.

Lily, I need you to go over his day,
everything he did, everyone he talked to.

If he doesn't know
how he got this, uh...

Maybe he just doesn't know
that he knows.

Look, I think something
happened today, some...

minor event shared by Doctor Winslow,
Lou and Doctor Macy.

And he's the only one of those three
who can tell us what it was.

But aren't we overlooking
the obvious here?

Maybe he got it
from Doctor Winslow.

No, the incubation period for airborne
transmission is twelve hours minimum.

He wouldn't even be sick yet.

What if this has a shorter incubation?

We'll find that out soon enough.

I need you and Bug
to do an autopsy.

On who?

The latest victim.

This is like some cosmic joke.

You ever done one of these before?

Well, I don't know, do I?

You may have had
some veterinary training.

No, I haven't.

Well, it's all the same thing, right?

No, it's not the same thing.

I don't even know what I'm looking for,
and I probably couldn't see it even if I did.

Rats are mammals, are they not?

Organs are similar
in function and appearance.

Everything's just smaller.

With more hair.

You are an idiot.

Hey, I'm just trying help, mate.

Look, don't you understand?

This is it.

Well, what do you mean?

There's nothing left to investigate.

No other places to find answers.

It all comes down to this.

Everything is riding on a bloody rat.

And that brings us to two thirty.

So what were you
doing at two thirty?

I think that might have been around
the time I scratched my ass.

Come on, Garret.

This is pointless, Lily.
We're throwing Hail Mary's here.

Sometimes Hail Mary's get caught.

Well, so we're looking for a miracle
where we already have one.

Oh, where exactly is a miracle?

Come on, think of all the factors
that had to come together,

all the things that had to go
perfectly wrong for us to be here now.

Being socked in by the storm,
the power,...

the phones.

John Doe looking contaminated
when he wasn't,

cut by Winslow when he wasn't
even supposed to be here.

And if it had all gone down five minutes
sooner, we might have heard from CDC.

Oh, what are we talking about?

I'm just saying that uh,

you know, when you look
at the big picture...

Look, there is no big picture, Garret.

Not yet.

Hey,

for all these factors coming together,
others are keeping them apart.

I'm one of them.

All... all of us are.

And I'm not gonna waste time having this
intellectual discussion with you right now.

You are sick, you could die.

Now,

at two thirty, what were you doing?

Elaine, I need you to wake him up.

Why?

So I can talk to him.

He was at the clinic,
so was Lou, so was the rat.

That has to mean something.

He needs to sleep.

Wake him up.

If you don't, I will.

At best, he'll be incoherent.

At worst, you'll impede his recovery.

What about Garret's recovery?

I'm sorry, uh,
I wish I had an answer.

I wish you were looking for answers
instead of just hiding.

I'm not hiding.

No one's riding
to the rescue here, Elaine.

It's up to all of us, and you're sittin'
in here playing Florence Nightingale.

And what would you have me do
that's not already being done?

Look, he's dying,
and now so is Garret.

It's not your fault.

No one said it was.

I don't think that your breaking quarantine
is what made Garret sick,

if that's what you're thinking.

I just need to do something.

Everything's already being done.

Doctor Macy has contacted
the hazardous material people.

They know we're here and
I'm sure they're on their way.

In this weather?
They can't land a helicopter.

They won't even be able to
find the building.

Jordan.

You haven't said a word
in seven minutes.

I'm thinking.

Well, could you think out loud?
I'd like a sense of what's going on.

I see major intestinal infection.

Similar to what you saw in Lou?

Yeah.

Any breakdown in the lining
of the esophagus?

That's here, too.

And more to the point, does the state of
this rat differ in any way to that of Lou?

Not really.

Right, so we're finding nothing.

Nothing new,
nothing that can help us.

I don't know.

But eh, if you're seeing
the same thing...

But that's not
what I should be seeing.

This is a rat.

Look, rats have
a hearty immune system,

part of what makes them such furry
little conduits of disease.

This is the kind of illness
a rat would normally be spreading.

Right, well,
isn't that what we have here?

Rats carry these diseases,
they don't die from them.

Why is it that this one did?

Doctor, I think I love you.

I love you, too, Peter.

Try to sleep.

Doctor Macy,

he found out,
he's gonna fire me.

He's found out.

About what?

The clinic.

I heard someone talking.

Peter, what happened at the clinic?

There are no openings, anyway.

Peter, what happened at the clinic?

I was looking for a job, any...
any job but this one.

Oh.

Do you want another blanket?

Mm-mm.

How come you stayed with me?

Because I understand.

You understand?

When I was five,
I felt in the neighbor's pool.

I wasn't breathing
when they pulled me out.

No one even knows
how long I was under.

Just floating there just above the bottom,
cold, in limbo.

No one should ever feel that alone.

Peter.

Oh.

Are you okay?

Lily, I need some help over here!

Elaine.

There will be a time for all of us
to feel what's just happened.

This is not that time.

For now, we walk away.

Whatever this is,
it can come on quickly.

I need to ask
if anyone is feeling ill.

Stomach cramps, fever, nausea.

No.

Not me.

Me, neither.

If that changes, tell me.

In the meantime, we need to keep an eye
on Garret and Doctor Winslow.

They're stable for now,
but that could change.

I need you and Nigel
to set them up in the bullpen.

It's now our infirmary.

Okay.

Right.

What's the latest on the rat?

There is no latest.

The rat's in a similar condition
to Lou Rickard.

Weird.

Why did he get sick?

Why wasn't it just a host
for the disease?

That's what I don't understand.

You know, unless this is
some kind of super virus that...

att*cks anything that
it comes into contact with...

Well, whatever it is, you can see
how it ravages the digestive tract.

What if we've been looking at this
in the wrong way?

What do you mean?

We've been thinking in terms of
contagion... a germ, a virus.

What if it's not
that kind of pathogen?

What if it's a toxin?

That might explain this damage.

Yeah, and the impossibly
short incubation period.

Along with the fact that
it kills rats and people.

It's why we couldn't understand how
it was transmitted from victim to victim.

Because it wasn't. It was introduced
into their systems in some other way.

I have the stomach content.

Okay.

Oh, not much there.

Well, it is a rat, after all.

Thanks.

Oh, what's this?

It's organic.

Soft, porous.

It's like dark bread.

Pumpernickel, maybe.

Whatever it is,

it's in Lou Rickard's
stomach contents, too.

I'd like to offer a theory,
if I may.

Well, we're wide open
to theories, Nige.

Alright, look, we've been looking for
something that causes fever...

and... and severe
gastrointestinal distress, right?

- Yeah.
- Okay.

So, suppose the solution is
actually something quite simple.

Like E. coli.

E. coli sickens,
but it doesn't normally k*ll.

Well, it does if it's a virulent strain
like uh, E. coli O-one-five-seven.

Garret!

Garret.

Shhh.
Jordan, he just fell asleep.

This is worth waking up for.

Come on, Garret.
Rise and shine.

What's going on?

We think it's food, contaminated food.

Did you have a sandwich
or any kind of bread?

- No.
- Are you sure?

Garret, wake up.

Hey, there you are.

Did you eat any pumpernickel today?

I hate pumpernickel.

Okay, not pumpernickel.

But uh, something dark, bread-like.

Did you eat
anything like that?

In the... in the break room.

Courtesy of Ted the sales rep.

I say he better rethink
his choice of gift basket services.

Wait.

Wait, I saw one of those
at the clinic.

He must have left one there, too.

That's how Lou Rickard got ill.

Have either of you
eaten anything from here?

No, I didn't.

Neither did Lily.
She's allergic to chocolate.

Bug?

Did you eat a brownie?

I think I did.

Okay, when?

I don't know, it...
it's been so hectic.

Try to remember.

Um, three hours ago, maybe longer.

Okay, okay.

Well, at least now we know
what we're dealing with here.

Which means precious little
without a cure, Jordan.

I mean, we've seen what happens
when this goes untreated...

Yeah, I...

Jordan!

Jordan!

Is he... Garret!

Garret, talk to me!

Come on.

Oh God, he's burning up.

His fever just sh*t up
all of a sudden.

He's overheating.

Okay, we need to get him down
to the crypt to cool him down.

Nigel, run down to the clinic,
get all the antibiotics you can.

Come on!

I'm gonna get some snow.

Oh...

That's it.
That's what we want.

Get this off of me.

Shhh.
Garret, you're gonna have to deal.

- Get off the...
- Shhh.

Okay.

It's okay.

We're flying Doctor Macy and
Doctor Winslow to Boston General.

The chopper'll be back in five
with room enough for the rest of you.

Is it always
this crazy around here?

- Garret!
- Jordan,

where's Elaine?

She's not comin'.

What?
