[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

Hey, guys.

[CHATTER CONTINUES]

Okay, let's go! Let's go in the museum.

Come on, everyone.

Hey, Lucas, Miguel! Wait up!

Hey, Monique.

Let's go, everyone. Stick together.

We're going inside now.

Hmm.

Right here! Right here, right here.

You want to take a picture?
Are you serious, dude?

All right.

Hello, I'm Ryan Rojas,
inviting you to join us

as we revisit
how the American West was won.

Monique, can you text me that?

WOMAN: Okay, let's go.
Watch your step on these stairs.

And go ahead and file in.

This way. Come on.

Oh!

Come on, this way.

[CHATTER CONTINUES]

GIRL: Hey! You ruined my sh*t!

Shh!

And that's the last anyone saw
of these three boys...

: a.m. this morning.

An hour later, when teachers discovered

they were gone, we responded.

I had the folks in C.I. gather
all the student and teacher

- cellphone video and photographs
- [COUGHS]

And synched it with
local surveillance footage,

hoping to get a clue, but no luck.

PROVENZA: [CHUCKLES]
Well, : this morning?

Chief, you know,
nine hours isn't missing

for year olds.

They're probably at the beach.

Yeah, maybe they planned

to be back by the end of the field trip

and just lost track of time.

Or just got lost, period.

Not a great neighborhood for that.

TAO: What about their cellphones?

Turned off... batteries out.

These three boys are off the grid.

Yeah, so their parents can't find them,

or because of us.

I think what we're all wondering, Chief,

is what makes this incident different

from all the other teens
who skipped school today?

Buzz, can you find that video of
all three boys posing outside?

- Yes, sir.
- [KEYBOARD CLACKING]

[SIGHS] These boys...

- ...aren't troublemakers.

All three are honor-roll students

and members of St. Joseph
of Nazareth's Campus Ministry,

working hand in hand with
the church's youth programs.

Three year olds working
hand in hand with the church.

Hmm. Now where have I heard that before?

My daughter and both of my sons

attended St. Joseph's, Lieutenant.

No priest in my parish has ever
been accused of wrongdoing.

I assume, Chief, there's something else?

- There is.
- Is this what you wanted, Chief?

- [COMPUTER BEEPS]
- Yes. Thank you, Buzz.

That "something else"
you're assuming, Commander,

would be the boy on the far right.

His name's Lucas Garza, and he's been

a Type-A diabetic since he was seven.

He may have an insulin kit
in his jacket, but...

Nine hours missing...
Lucas could already be in shock.

Yes, which makes this disappearing act

even more worrisome.

Plus, the middle boy, Ryan Rojas?

Two months ago, his stepfather d*ed,

putting him and his mother
in financial trouble.

And the other kid,
Miguel Diaz, is a Dreamer.

Teachers say he would never
bring unwanted attention

on to his family, who are undocumented.

Also, I have at least one

freaked-out parent of each of these kids

in my office right now... unusual.

Look, Chief, Julio lost his mom

and has days of bereavement leave left,

and the Commander, Nolan, and Mike

are still getting over the flu.

Well, we can't just stop working
till Julio gets back,

and I-I'm almost well.

Well, better, anyway.

Excuse me, Commander.

I'd like to ask Chief Mason a question,

for my own edification...

Why is this a Major Crime?

If we were dealing
with three missing white boys

from Harvard-Westlake,
and one of them had diabetes

- and maybe...
- [STERNLY] This is not about race.

Right now? It's always
about race, Lieutenant.

That's just the way it is.

By the time we investigate
a full-on critical missing, sir,

these boys will probably be back home.

And if that happens, Nolan,
you have my permission

to tuck them in and bawl them out.

But right now, I'd rather overreact

than discover I didn't
pay enough attention later.

So, if you want to know what
makes this a Major Crime,

I guess I do.

Well, that is all we need to know.

As of this moment,

these three boys are a critical missing.

Chief, you said the parents are here?

With articles of their sons' clothing...

which I hope to God we don't need.

SARA: As a diabetic,
my son keeps a strict schedule.

It's so unlike Lucas to skip school.

He's never even left Mass early,
much much less a field trip.

Well, there's a first time
for everything, Ms. Garza.

Do you have any idea

where Lucas and his friends
could have gone?

Maybe he forgot his insulin,

and he went back to school to get it.

Are you sure he didn't take
an Uber or a Lyft

- back to St. Joseph's?
- Well, we have officers

in front of the school
and in front of your house

- in case Lucas shows up.
- [BEEPS]

Now, to your knowledge,
did any of these boys...

All this trouble
and the boys are probably

just at a double feature somewhere.

A double feature somewhere?

Should we be looking
for these kids in the s?

I mean, where do they have
double features anymore?

SHARON: I doubt they went to the movies,

but they didn't just slip away.

They had a destination in mind...

- but where?
- Should I call my husband?

M-Mateo's been performing
knee surgeries all day and...

Well, if you want to text your husband

and see if he knows about
all of this, please.

I need to separate Mr. and Mrs. Diaz,

- and I'm out of bodies.
- Mike?

Still checking
their social-media sites...

- want me to stop?
- No. Stay there.

Buzz, looks like it's time
to put your reserve

detective skills to a test.

- Really?
- Yes.

Okay. Uh...

This is the break room,

uh... Visitor's Conference Center,

and, uh... Interview ♪ .

Remember, you ask the questions.

He knows that, Andy.

Good luck, Buzz.

- Thanks.
- Let's go, let's go.

- I think I need a tie.
- You don't need a tie.

...promise.

Uh... right.

Mateo says...
I-I don't if this is important,

but when you're asked
if anyone disliked Lucas,

Mateo reminded me that he had received

a very angry phone call
from a Marvin Garret.

He's a next-door neighbor
of Miguel's family.

Apparently, Marvin Garret was
saying that he wanted Lucas

to stay away from his daughter.

Uh... [EXHALES SHARPLY]

I can't remember her name right now.

Um... I'm sorry. I'm drawing a blank.

Well, was there ever any trouble

between this girl and Lucas?

Oh, there's a young lady in the mix.

- What a surprise.
- ...but apparently

Mr. Garret was extremely rude,

saying that he wanted...

Kelly! Kelly... That was her name.

He wanted Kelly to stop
hanging out with Mexicans.

I think Mr. Garret's daughter

has a little crush on Lucas.

Maybe Lucas has one on her, too.

Mr. Garret doesn't like it.

Did Mr. Garret ever thr*aten Lucas

or anyone in your family?

ALEXA: No, but Marvin reported
us to Immigration again.

He stopped me while
I was coming out of my driveway

to tell me that we should move
before ICE detained us.

I don't get it.

Marvin Garret came after you
because his daughter

wanted to date someone else's son?

Well, first, Kelly
was interested in Miguel.

But both Lucas and Ryan...

They hang out at our place.

We live right by St. Joseph of Nazareth,

and Kelly knows all of them very well.

We treat them all like our own children.

Kelly Garret is years old.

Ah, the older woman
with a driver's license.

Maybe she was at the museum
to pick them up.

- Did the boys ever argue over Kelly?
- Oh, no.

- It was never that serious.
- Buzz, could you please

ask Mr. Diaz about his neighbor

Marvin Garret who was trying
to deport his family.

We could flip more houses,
but you don't want

to bid too hard against legal residents.

They can call Immigration... it happens.

If you're worried about ICE,
then your neighbor Marvin

must make you extra anxious.

Oh, you know about Marvin?

Yeah, Marvin doesn't like us,
sure, but it...

it's mostly because
of his daughter, Kelly.

My son and his two best friends
are almost her age,

and... she kind of likes all of them...

- in different ways.
- BUZZ: Different ways?

Is that a problem
for your son and his friends?

Oh, no, no, no. No.

Miguel is very close with these boys.

Us, too. Us, too.

We keep insulin around for Lucas,

and we've tried to step in for Ryan.

You know, his family situation was...

- not great.
- Not great how?

DANIELLA: My first husband
was a worthless piece of crap...

cheated on me all the time,

never paid child support for Ryan,

doesn't let us know
how to get in touch with him.

At least I got my son out of it.

Now, Hector... Ay carajo.

[LAUGHS]

Your second husband's
supposed to be better.

Mine was worse... I learned nothing.

And Hector passed away
a couple of months ago.

Fell... maybe jumped...

from our apartment balcony,
drunk or high.

Look, Hector paid his own way
and then some.

I'll give him that.

But he lied to me.

He hadn't left the gangs at all.

And...

he got physical with Ryan...

knocked him around a little.

Your husband fell off your balcony

after b*ating your son?

Don't worry about
what Hector did to Ryan.

Worry about what I'm gonna do to Ryan.

Have you checked
with my first husband... Ian?

He tried to take Ryan
out of school two weeks ago

without my permission.

And he's done that before, too.

Otherwise, I can't be missing work...

All right, it's time to hit everyone

with consent forms to search
their houses and devices.

We got to get moving.

Commander.

Father Stan.

- Sharon.
- Ohh.

Are you okay?

Yes, I'm just, um...

I'm still shaking off the remnants

of that terrible flu.

Well, hopefully, we won't make it worse.

I brought Father Jonas Alcaraz,

- new head of our Campus Ministry.
- Hello, Father.

He spends more time
with these missing boys

than anyone on our faculty.

I'm feeling just... [INHALES DEEPLY]

Terrible that
I wasn't at the museum today.

I'd have noticed
they were gone much faster.

You pay that close attention to them?

You're responsible
for their commitment to Christ,

not their science tests.

Sharon, thank you for what
you're doing to find our boys.

- [COUGHS]
- And for moving so quickly.

Well, maybe not quickly enough.
Father, may I?

A teacher found Lucas Garza's
backpack on the bus.

He didn't have it with him
at the museum today.

[BACKPACK UNZIPS]

Are those insulin kits?

- Oh...
- [SIGHS]

If Lucas doesn't have his meds,

we might already be out of time.

Mike, I need you
to gather all the boys' clothing

from the interview rooms.

Chief, I'm going to need

some extra personnel and some dogs.

[DOOR OPENS, CLOSES]

I'm going to need a lot of dogs.

All of their families have issues.

Miguel and his parents are undocumented.

Lucas' father has
one of the most successful

surgical practices in America,
but he has health issues.

And though we didn't find out

until after his stepfather d*ed,

Ryan...

was physically abused for two years.

Yet they're all doing well at school

and, from this distance,
seem relatively happy.

Well, I credit their friendship
for that...

and Father Jonas, of course.

But I hate this happened
while these boys

were under St. Joseph's supervision.

I... Maybe if they'd been
in school uniforms...

You know, we let them wear
what they want on field trips.

Will we find them? Soon?

If the boys stuck together

and we have a little luck, I hope.

Oh, ah! [LAUGHS]

And I talked to the young lady
you met at Ascension Day,

and she would be honored
to sing at your wedding.

I gave her your number.

Oh, that's a bit of good
news on a terrible night.

Thank you, Father, for arranging that.

And with everything else
that you have to do.

In the middle of crisis, life goes on...

Something our work teaches both of us.

Oh! And here's her ring bearer.

[CHUCKLES] Yeah, well, one of 'em.

Hey, Father Stan.

I'd... I'd hate to interrupt,
but Mom has to eat.

I'm trying to get my appetite back.

Ah, yeah. This was a tough flu.

At one point, almost a third
of our students were out sick.

Poor Julio's mother.

I'm stopping by his house tomorrow.

Please remind him
that we are here if he needs us.

And if you hear anything
about these boys,

anything at all...

[INHALES DEEPLY] Uh...[SIGHS]

[DOOR CLOSES]

They didn't have the salad you wanted,

so I got that, uh...

horrible broccoli-carrot-quinoa
thing that you like

and a little bit of chicken soup.

Maybe you'll be better

by your doctor's appointment tomorrow.

[INHALES SHARPLY]

All right.

Are you kidding me?

They put mustard on my hamburger bun

without asking me.

Why would anybody do that?

Sorry. Sorry, Sharon.

I just feel like nothing has
been going right for me today...

at all.

Did Gus ever call you back

or respond to any of your text messages?

No, no, um...

but his boss, Aiden,
posted four Instagram photos

of them at a club
in San Francisco, dancing.

You are following Gus'boss on Instagram?

Yeah. Yeah. I am,
and I'm not proud of it.

But those Instagram photos
explain Gus' complete

lack of communication with me
over the past four days.

Clearly, there's stuff
that he doesn't want to tell me,

and...

now he doesn't have to.

Maybe call again anyway.

I want to,

to hear him explain
why he's been avoiding me,

but...

I'm not gonna hunt him down.

So, they were last seen moving
in this direction,

past the yellow school buses,

where the other kids did not go,

so it gives us a fighting chance.

- Prep for search!
- [DOG GROWLS]

Let's start with our missing diabetic,

see where that takes us.

SARA: I don't understand
why you want to look

in the one place we know he's not.

If Lucas were home,
we wouldn't need you!

Ms. Garza, Dr. Garza,

if the boys made a plan
to skip the field trip,

we might find proof of that
in Lucas' room

- or on devices he uses.
- [SCOFFS]

Lucas may have
hid something in your house.

His situation is...

We feel it's urgent.

Sara, it's been hours.
Okay, we have to help them.

Lucas' room is... is this way.

[POLICE RADIO CHATTER]

JONAS: Watch your step, Lieutenant.

[POLICE RADIO CHATTER]

Check out these classrooms, please.

Let's see...

This is Miguel's.

Ryan's is over here.

I doubt you'll find anything

but what other kids keep
in their lockers.

[LOCK JOSTLES IN DISTANCE]

They know we can open these at any time,

so they're not really
a safe place to stash...

Father, I'm conducting this search,

not you... stand aside. Now.

- I'm just trying to help, Lieutenant.
- Mm-hmm.

No reason to be annoyed.

So, tell me, Father,

would any other kid at your school

have a Mexican drug cartel bracelet...

in his locker?

DANIELLA: I told you already...

I had no idea Hector was a gangster.

In fact, part of the reason
I married Hector

was so Ryan could have
a good guy around the house,

and that was a mistake.

Where'd you think
Hector's money came from?

He had money, right?

He said he was in the...

import-export business,

which I don't know nothing about.

I... [SCOFFS] I understand the codes

hospitals use for billing insurance,

and that's it.

Hector fell from here?

Or jumped? One or the other.

The police weren't sure,
a-and I wasn't here.

Uh-huh.

How tall was he?

The Death Report says ' ".

About. Maybe, yeah.

So, he fell, huh?

[CHUCKLES] How?

Did he, like, get drunk,
walk on the balcony's edge,

hang from it by his feet?

Ryan was here at the time?

In his room.

He didn't even know
anything had happened

till the police knocked on the door.

Where was Ian,

your first husband, Ryan's father?

I have no idea.

What about a last name, a date of birth?

We'd like to notify Ian
that Ryan is missing.

Let me look.

[DOG BARKS IN DISTANCE]

[POLICE RADIO CHATTER]

[DOG GROWLS]

[DOOR OPENS]

Okay, I need you guys to check
the backyard,

those hedges, the garage, the roof.

They're not here.

Excuse me, shouldn't you be out there,

looking in the streets
or... or the trains

or... or something
instead of our backyard?

Sir? Sir?

Oh. Right. Yes?

You're finally deporting these people?

I've only been calling 'em in
for five years.

L.A.P.D., sir.
I need you to get off the wall

- and step away...
- I'm standing on my own property.

If you interfere
with this investigation,

you'll standing
in front of a booking camera

with a slate beneath your neck.

[LAUGHS]

[SPEAKING SPANISH]

[SPEAKING IN SPANISH]

Excuse me, why don't you want us

to look under the floor of your closet?

Oh, you... [STAMMERS] you speak Spanish?

Claro. Officers!

[POLICE RADIO CHATTER]

SKYES: Ooh, this is...

This is a lot of oxy to keep
in your garage, Doctor.

Do you have a prescription for all this?

You swore to me that you had stopped,

that you had gotten rid of everything!

I did get rid of everything.

What is that she's holding then?!

- I forgot that stuff was there, okay?
- Oh, my God! Mateo!

If you're using again after all
that we have been through.

This is not the issue here.

You've only been out of rehab
for two weeks.

- Does Lucas know?
- Would you just shut up?!

Good God, Sara! Just shut up!

Can you concentrate on Lucas
for just one minute?!

[BREATHING HEAVILY]

Do the two of your argue
like this in front of your son?

TAO: I don't see
any signs of a struggle.

But the dogs say the boys were here.

[DOG WHINES]

[DOG BARKS]

[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER]

EMILIO: Hey... Hey, look, it...

it's no crime
to have cash in your house.

About how much?

Close to a million dollars, sir.

It's exactly a million dollars,

and every penny of it is legally ours.

Why are you taking the money
instead of bringing back my son?

[SPEAKS SPANISH]

[TRUNK POPS]

[POLICE RADIO CHATTER]

[CAR HONKS IN DISTANCE]

- [CELLPHONE CHIMES]
- [SIGHS]

Come on. Let's get this over with.

[TRUCK UNLATCHES]

Well, if the boys were here,
they weren't in this car.

[CHIMES]

- So, what do we have?
- Not much.

All three boys were tracked
to the same place,

but their scent didn't go beyond
the traffic circle.

So... someone was waiting for them,

picked them up, and drove them away.

NOLAN: It could have been Ryan's
biological father, Ian Nuñez.

He's tried to pick his son up before.

FLYNN: Or some g*ng banger who knew

that Ryan and his friends were rich.

BUZZ: But would whoever grabbed them

have known how much
Lucas needed insulin?

Well, we have a lot more
drug-related materials

to discuss here...
a full bag of opiates,

a dead cartel member,
a million bucks in cash,

and, oh, let's not forget

the Catholic Church and Father Jonas,

who was apparently
very close to these boys.

Commander... it's your call.

But I believe we need
to get photos of these boys

out to the media as soon as possible,

'cause they didn't just vanish
off the face of the Earth.

No, they did not.

It's beginning to look like
they were abducted.

It started as a yearly field trip

organized by the diocesis High school.

When it was over,

three teenage boys under
the direct supervision

of the Catholic Church were missing.

Only two months after the death
of Ryan's stepfather...

a g*ng member with connections
to a Mexican drug cartel...

The three teenagers vanished

with so-called Dreamer Miguel Diaz,

originally from Tamaulipas,

the Mexican state with
the highest kidnapping rate...

The boy who grew up here, Lucas Garza,

is a Type-A diabetic
and, without his insulin,

could already be another casualty

of the upswing in hate crimes
against Latinos and...

Lots of different theories.

I don't care what the media says

as long as they
get the boys' faces out there.

The million in cash...

- That bothers me.
- We're already looking into it, Chief.

But what about my request
for more specialized personnel?

I have a young expert
in your m*rder Room right now

catching up with the investigation.

One expert?

But worth many times that.

Detective Camila Paige was
a go-to utility hitter

- when I headed C.I.
- Mm-hmm.

She transferred to Missing
Persons a year-and-a-half ago

and has become exceptional
at finding teenagers.

[INDISTINCT TALKING]

Two cautionary things...

Detective Paige is still working out

how to be a part of a team,
and her manner is...

Excuse me, Commander,
mind if I ask why no one here's

trying to tap the phones
of these families yet?

And you must be Detective Camila Paige.

Oh. Sorry. I should've started by...

Yes, I'm Detective Paige.

Very happy that
you requested me, Commander,

and hopeful I can contribute...
so much at stake.

Yes, we have three young boys
who may be depending on us

to save their lives.

Warrants for wires
take time, but Narcotics

can get this done much faster
than we can, Chief.

Well, let me push the process.

If someone makes a ransom demand
or the boys call in,

- we need to know.
- Thank you.

I'd also like to talk to the girl...

uh... what's her name...

from next door to
the undocumented family...

Kelly Garret's father won't
let her talk to us,

and we have no means of coercing him,

so we are surveilling their house

in case the girl steps out on her own.

- This way, please.
- Uh, Mom. Mom!

- Yeah?
- Your doctor's appointment

...It's in minutes.

- Oh, I'm gonna go in later.
- Wait! No, no, no!

Look, I-I can call Andrea
and just ask her

if I can run you there and back
really fast.

Rusty, if Lucas Garza hasn't
taken his insulin,

his situation is far worse than mine.

And I'm fine. I'm better. I am.

ALEXA: We only have so much capital.

A-And we have to buy whatever...

Lieutenants Flynn and Tao, Buzz,

this is Detective Camila Paige
from Missing Persons.

- [DOOR CLOSES]
- She is an expert in locating teenagers.

- Hi.
- Greetings.

Miguel's parents are trying

to explain the million dollars we found.

...been taxed through
our daughter's company.

Which she has a right to own,

because she's an American citizen.

Yeah, well, let me tell you
about the other four times

that I found a million dollars
hidden in someone's house.

The first time, it was dr*gs.

Second time, it turned out to be...

dr*gs.

The third time, well,

we discovered that it was dr*gs.

The fourth time...

Hmm. Was it dr*gs?

You know, yeah.
[CHUCKLING] I think it was.

M-M-Maybe we... we should get a lawyer.

Well, now, that's interesting,
because everyone else

I found with a million dollars,
they wanted an attorney, too.

What a coincidence.

- This is just...
- You can't pay for a lawyer

- with the money we found in your house.
- You listen...

The only dr*gs that we have are the ones

that you take for a headache or a cold.

If someone knew you had
a million dollars

in your house and was
demanding a ransom for your...

No one kidnapped Miguel
because we have money.

We left Mexico because
of all of the kidnappings.

Please, please, I'm begging you.

- You have to find our son.
- SHARON: She may have a point.

If you're looking
for a kidnapping victim,

Lucas Garza is the obvious target.

I looked it up, and
if you're a professional athlete

and need your knee fixed,

Dr. Garza or one of his associates

is where you go.

BUZZ: Garza's rich,

and if you know his parents
have a million in cash,

Miguel's valuable.

But why grab Ryan?
His mom's got nothing.

Yeah, I've been thinking
about that, too,

and Ryan could have accidently

set his friends up to be kidnapped

just by talking about them
to the wrong people,

especially if he was dealing
dr*gs on the side.

Well, we haven't found any
gangster connections to Ryan.

Still, he had a cartel bracelet
in his locker...

probably belonged to his stepdad.

It's Ryan's biological father
we need to find now,

if nothing else but to notify him.

Detective Paige, you get your wish.

I want you to go
with Lieutenant Provenza...

Oh! I know him really well.

Hey, that's great news, Detective.

Now maybe you'd like to hear

what the Commander would like you to do.

Oh, I know.

She wants us to try and talk to
Marvin Garret's daughter, Kelly.

If the boys were planning
something off-the-wall,

then Lucas or Miguel might've told her.

She could have even picked them up.

Kelly has a driver's license,
access to a car...

Detective Paige, thank you
for so completely

anticipating my orders.

Buzz, will you fill in for Julio again

and go with the Lieutenant
and Detective Paige?

Sure. Absolutely. Great.

And I'll bring my camera, too,
just in case Kelly talks to us.

Well, Mr. and Mrs. Diaz
certainly seem genuine.

- [DOOR CLOSES]
- Still, a million bucks in cash, well...

Cami?

Cami!

What are you doing here?

[LAUGHS]

[DOOR OPENS]

TAO: Good morning. L.A.P.D.

We need to search your offices,
so buzz open the doors now.

I can't let those dogs in here.
Also, you can't look in any...

- Would you rather shut down for the day?
- What?

Look, you people don't understand.

- HIPAA protects...
- HIPAA doesn't apply to this warrant.

We can hold everyone here
while your lawyers explain that.

That won't be necessary.

Hi. I'm Dr. Alan Redmond.

Is this about Lucas?

Yes, it is.

Please, come in. Right there.

[DOOR BUZZES]

[DOG PANTING]

Are you looking for something specific?

The boys? Large amounts of cash?

Where's Dr. Garza's office?

Right this way.

We don't keep large amounts of cash.

Most of our fees are collected

from insurance companies,
credit cards, checks.

- This is Dr. Garza's office...
- Unh, unh.

Doctor, stand over there.

Okay.

TAO: When did you last see Lucas?

Uh... about three weeks ago.

Mrs. Garza was working late.

Lucas came in and waited for her.

And where was Dr. Garza at that time?

His wife said he'd just
got out of rehab two weeks ago,

and he had a large stash
of oxycodone at his house.

Any idea where that
might have come from...

[DOG GROWLS, PANTING]

It's clear.

The oxy?

We encourage our patients
to return the unused portion

of their prescription painkillers.

I think that Mateo was...

You know, he was in a car
accident three years ago,

and he's been trying to recover, right?

Look, he never operated on
a patient under the influence.

And how does his opioid use
have anything to do

with why Lucas is missing?

Did Lucas know his father
had a drug problem?

I'm not sure.

Mrs. Garza is our office manager,

and we thought...

She never talked about it.

All right, can you think
of any reason why these boys

might've stepped away
from their field trip?

PAIGE: Young love makes kids crazy.

He's a handsome, bright kid
with a dangerous health problem.

She's trapped in the house with a father

determined to keep them separated.

They had no choice
but to fall for each other.

Their friends might've even helped them

run off to get married.

You remember Elena, Lieutenant?

I had to stop Elena
from doing that very same thing

when she was .

[CHUCKLES] Little Elena. How is she?

Not so little anymore...

sophomore at Stanford...
physics major, full ride.

Can you believe it?

Now all five of them are
either in or through college.

- You have five children?
- No. [SCOFFS]

Five little brothers and sisters.

Cami's parents were k*lled
by a drunk driver

when she was .

She raised all the rest of her family

pretty much on her own.

Uh... I-I'm sorry. I didn't know.

Lieutenant Provenza found the assh*le.

Had three priors. Can you believe it?

Anyway, all the Paiges
grew up happy and healthy,

- and they still love you, Lieutenant.
- [CHUCKLES]

And every Fourth of July,
we talk about that barbecue

where your clothes caught on fire.

[CHUCKLING]

Never seen anyone so mad at a hot dog.

[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER]

[NORMAL VOICE] Oh, God.
This doesn't look good.

[INDISTINCT TALKING IN DISTANCE]

Buzz! Buzz! Keep them away from us.

Yes, sir... L.A.P.D.!

We are not here to talk to you,
so please just stay back,

or I'm going to have to ask you
to move to the end of block.

Officers, please. Thank you.

We appreciate you being here.
Please, just keep moving back.

- [INDISTINCT CHATTER]
- Thank you.

[DOOR BELL CHIMES]

- Yeah?
- L.A.P.D.

We'd like to talk to you about
some boys who have gone missing.

I'll tell you who needs to go missing...

the whole Diaz family.

You should be over there, getting
rid of them, not bothering me.

Mr. Garret, we apologize
for the inconvenience,

but do you mind if
we ask your daughter just...

Leave Kelly out of this.

And you, you rude son of a bitch,

I don't want you on my property.

PROVENZA: Mr. Garret, I don't
think you understand, sir.

Your neighbor's son, Miguel Diaz,

is missing with two of his friends...

Lucas Garza and Ryan Rojas.

Now, we're just here
to canvass the neighborhood.

Oh, my God. Dad, please!

- We... We... We should talk to them!
- Kelly!

Kelly, my name is Detective Camila Paige.

Call the L.A.P.D. and ask
for me, Camila Paige...

Go back to your room, young lady...

- ...and we can talk!
- ...and stay there! Now!

And you people,
don't come back on my property

- without a warrant!
- We have three missing boys, sir.

This is a crisis.

You call it a crisis.

I call it a good start.

Cami... I appreciate your initiative,

but do not go around
yelling things like "Call me"

while I'm standing there
unless I say so.

Oh! And neither of you open your mouths

while I make this jerk's life
as hard as I possibly can.

[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER]

Excuse me.

I am Lieutenant Provenza, L.A.P.D.,

and I would like to announce
that due to his refusal

to cooperate with the L.A.P.D.'s search

for these missing year olds,

the Diaz's next-door neighbor,
Mr. Marvin Garret...

G-A-R-R-E-T...
just became a person of interest

in the case of the St. Joseph's Three.

- Lieutenant Provenza...
- [INDISTINCT CLAMORING]

REPORTER: Does this mean
the Catholic Church

is no longer part of the investigation?

We're not ruling out anyone,

any place, or any organization.

REPORTER ♪ : What about forced
deportation or hate crimes...

Any possibility of these...

I just answered that when I said

we're not ruling anything out. Next.

REPORTER ♪ : Is there
any truth to the rumor that

Ryan Rojas' stepfather, Hector Padilla,

is a courier
for the Mexican drug cartel?

I have no idea.

Mr. Padilla has been dead
for two months,

so we know these boys are not with him.

Excuse me, excuse me. That's all.

[MONITOR CLICKS, BEEPS]

Lieutenant, you care to explain
why you took it upon yourself

to brief the media
without permission from me?

Mm, not really.

[PAPERS RUSTLE]

But since you ask,

Marvin Garret was not
just uncooperative.

He was obstructive.

There are lives at stake here, Chief,

and if that jerk won't talk to us,

let's see how he likes the attention

of some of L.A.'s finest journalists.

The hunt for these boys
is an L.A.P.D. investigation,

not a press opportunity,
and so you know,

I was just on the phone
with Bishop Calhoun,

who the press contacted
after your little briefing,

and he was furious that
you didn't rule out

- the Catholic Church.
- Well, how could I do that?

These three year olds
have a very special relationship

with a priest in their school.

Father Jonas actively tried to stop me

from looking into the locker
of Ryan Rojas.

I don't think Chief Mason objects to us

investigating the Church, Lieutenant.

I think he objects to us saying
that out loud to the media.

FLYNN: Good luck controlling the press.

We've got journalists staked out

in front of every one
of the boys' homes.

Typical death watch.

We're not there yet, Mike.

We're passed the -hour mark...

no ransom demands over our wires
and no word from the boys.

And nothing on any of their
devices or their e-mail servers,

and nothing on
any social-media platforms.

We're not at a dead end yet.

The Ian Nuñez brought in by Patrol is

definitely Ryan's father.

Wes is bringing him up.

Where'd they find him?

Working the counter
at his father-in-law's

- marijuana dispensary.
- dr*gs again.

Mr. Nuñez doesn't seem to know
what's going on with his son.

According to Patrol,
he came willingly...

- No questions asked.
- Why?

What does he think this is about?

Look, I can get her, like,
a third of the child support.

That'd be, like, $ , ...
almost a third.

But, I mean, there's
no reason to arrest me.

That'd... That'd make it
harder on everybody.

SHARON: If you have $ , in cash,

why not just give it to your ex-wife?

Because it's never enough. Yeah.

Like, with Daniella, when I see her,

whenever I slip her some bills,
she's all like,

"What am I supposed to do with $ ?"

And, "Where are you?

Why don't you ever see your son?"

Which is not true, because I spent

two whole days with him in Disneyland.

And you know what?
She didn't thank me or anything.

Because you picked him up from school

- without telling her?
- No.

No, I'm not talking about that time.

No, um, that was when he was seven.

No, this is, uh... more recent.

Yeah, like,

I-I called, I set it up,

I came to the house, I picked him up.

Yeah, the kid had a blast.

SHARON: More recently when?

Uh, when...

Uh, wow.

That was a while back.

Uh, yeah, like, uh...
you know, Ryan was .

But you've seen him since,
though, right...

just two weeks ago?

SHARON: Let me jog your memory.

You when to St. Joseph of Nazareth

and tried to take Ryan out of class,

- which caused a...
- Whoa, wow. Really?

That nosey priest said all that, huh?

Okay, okay. Well, look.

Let me tell you something
about Father Jonas.

Oh, by all means, Ian.

Tell us everything about Father Jonas.

Yeah, that name keeps popping up.

Let me tell you the story
from the beginning.

I went to St. Joseph's because Ryan...

he was looking me up, like, online,

and he posted something
on my Facebook page.

And that's a problem why?

[EXHALES SHARPLY] Yeah. Because...

All right, look, um...

I got three other kids
with my new wife, Angela.

It's kind of funny. [LAUGHS]

I just haven't really gotten around

to telling Angie about my other son.

I mean, she hasn't heard
about Ryan at all,

and if she found out
on Facebook, you know...

Oh, my God. Really?

And just like that,
we have another suspect.

At this point, who isn't a suspect?

...on my page again,
you know, because I-I...

I can't be monitoring
my Facebook all day.

He was posting sh*t like,
"Yo, when are you gonna

give Mom a little money," right?

T-This was after, um...
Hector, he took that leap,

you know, and he fell
or whatever he did, and...

and they were hurting for cash.

So, Ryan posted on your Facebook page,

then you came to school, then you
tried to pull him from a class.

Yeah, to give the little man
some money... $ .

That is a lot of cash
for a -year-old kid.

And Father Jonas stopped you.

Yeah, and he called the guards.

He called the guards,
and he had me kicked

out of the building, and for what?

It ain't illegal
to offer your own kid $ .

That is a good thing... a good thing.

Okay, where were you yesterday

between : a.m. and : p.m.?

What were you doing during those hours?

Why?

[SCOFFS] What's the problem, Ian?

What, you don't remember where you were?

No, no. Let me just... Let me just
think about that, man.

So... You're just suddenly
getting in my face,

asking me where I was and all that,

and just, it's, like, sounding serious.

It is serious, Ian.

Yesterday, your son
and two of his friends

went missing on a school field trip.

What?

Your son has disappeared, sir,
and we're trying to find him.

No, no, no. He ain't disappeared, man.

He just ran away from Mama
or he's probably with,

- uh... Father Jonas...
- No, he isn't.

Ian, no, he isn't!

We need you to tell us where you were...

- Okay.
- ...yesterday morning.

Okay. All right. Okay.

Just hold on, all right? I was, um...

I was... I was hanging out
at the beach, okay?

Yeah, I was hanging out at the beach.

It was my day off,
my... my wife was at work,

the kids were...
were with their grandparents,

and, um... yeah, I was just chilling

with a-a-a jug of mojitos at Matador.

Anyone see you at Matador?

You speak to anyone
while you were there?

No. I was by myself.

- Doing what?
- Uh, doing what?

Uh...[LAUGHING]

I was just watchin' waves,
you know, laying back,

reading a book.

What book?

[STAMMERS] "Valley of the Dolls."

Yeah, it was my wife's book.
I borrowed it.

It, uh, sounded like fun.

Who are some of the characters
in that book,

"Valley of the Dolls"?

Characters.

[EXHALES SHARPLY]

- Where is she?
- Interview Room .

I need to talk to her.

Buzz.

Uh... D.D.A. Hobbs
says she needs you to step

out into the hallway, if you can.

All right, Ian, you know what?

We want you to sign a consent form.

Let us search your house.

Wait, you got to what? No. What for?

What do you got to search my house for?

To prepare you for
the very difficult conversation

you're about to have with your wife.

No. No. No way. No.

You want to search my house,
you get a warrant.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

I've come from a meeting
at the D.A.'s office,

where we've ordered bodyguards
for Emma Rios,

and we're recommending them for Rusty.

What?

Based on a death report
of Carolyn Sayles

from Scottsdale, Arizona,
age ... What?

In perfect health
until she lost her balance

while hiking a canyon
and fell down feet.

Why is Carolyn Sayles
so important to this case?

It's not this case.

Ms. Sayles was once stepmother
to Phillip Stroh.

Ohh.

RUSTY: Five deaths.

Three could be coincidental.

But five makes a pattern.

Yes, I think so.

Andrea thinks so, too.

I don't get it.
Stroh made a clean getaway.

No one has spotted him anywhere,
have they?

No, but he's been known
to work through third parties,

or in concert with them, anyway.

So four accidents and a su1c1de

equals protection
for Emma, Brenda, and me.

And I may add Linda Rothman
to that list,

because she was Stroh's attorney
for a while,

and it didn't work out.

Look, all of these deaths were
several months apart.

I-I don't think that I need
an S.I.S. security detail yet,

but, Sharon, I can't just sit back

and let this happen to me again.

- Meaning?
- Meaning I'd like to be...

more proficient in protecting myself.

More proficient in protecting yourself

in what way?

FLYNN: Uh... sorry to interrupt,

but you have to go.

- I'll drive.
- I'll drive.

I'm back almost %.

Yeah, but I can't be in the field

unless I'm with my commanding officer.

So let me take you.

"In the field"?

What's happened?

[BELL TOLLING]

- How long?
- [CAR DOOR CLOSES]

I'm not sure. The gardener
called it in minutes ago,

but the body has obviously been here

since sometime last night.

[TOLLING CONTINUES]

[INSECTS BUZZING]

PROVENZA: Well...

here's our diabetic.

Now, what I'd like to know is...

where are the other two boys?

That, Lieutenant, is, um...

[VOICE BREAKING]
It's an excellent question.
