10x21 - A Death in the Family

Post by bunniefuu »

With the light story. They could do as much damage...

as if they were pictures of them in bed.

- J.R.. knock it off. - I'm talking about that floozy. April.

Soon everybody will own a piece of Ewing Oil.

What Cliff believes is that I'm spying on him ! you.

And J.R. believes I'm spying on him ! Cliff.

Introducing the new Valentine Gill.

- It's Jamie's will. - It's as though she had a premonition.

[g*n CLICKING AND g*nsh*t]

[KNOCKING ON DOOR]

Who is it?

PAM: Cliff. it's me. It's Pam. - Come in. come in.

Hong Phat Restaurant? It's MI. Barnes calling.

I'd like to know where my food is, please.

Listen to me. It is not my problem that your delivery boy is sick.

I'd like my food, and I would like it delivered tonight, please.

Well, what's wrong with you? Why the long face, huh?

Cliff, I think you better sit down.

Please?

I don't know how to say this except to just say it.

What?

Jamie is dead.

How do you know that?

She was mountain climbing in Mexico with a girlfriend...

and there was a rockslide or a landslide...

and they were buried.

Her girlfriend, a girl named Mary, escaped.

Made it to a farmhouse, and she collapsed there, unconscious.

And what happened to Jamie?

They didn't find he! ! a week.

The people who found her arranged for her funeral.

Well. how do they know it was her?

They took pictures of her before the funeral.

And when Mary regained consciousness. She confirmed...

that it was Jamie.

Oh. God.

I was so mean to her.

Oh.

Now. why couldn't I have been a better husband or something to! her?

Cliff, now, you can't blame yourself because your marriage didn't work out.

That doesn't have anything to do with Jamie's death.

You could have been the happiest couple and this still could have happened.

Yup, I know. That's right. You're right. Yeah. Yeah, I know, it's, uh...

No, it's not my fault, you know.

Jamie was the one with the crazy ideas. You know. like mountain climbing.

I mean. it's not my fault she went mountain climbing.

It wouldn't have made any difference anyway.

You know. I mean. You know. you're light.

No. when you're light, you're light.

You're light.

Yup.

[DOORBELL RINGS]

- J.R. - April.

What are you doing here?

Thought you and your wife were the loving couple these days.

Yeah. we are. This is not a pleasure trip.

Little late ! a business meeting. Don't you think?

Depends on how you look at it.

What are you talking about?

I'm talking about my pool cousin Jamie.

It seems she's met with a fatal climbing accident in Mexico.

- J.R.. that's terrible. - Yeah. Yeah. it is.

Well. it does mean that Jack's gonna be getting his percent back...

which means. of course. that you'll be getting your percent back.

JR... how can you say that? That's so callous.

Oh. I 'feel terrible about it.

She was such a young. pretty gill.

But there's no reason we shouldn't make the best of a bad situation.

If she hadn't caught Cliff and me kissing, she might still be alive.

Now, if it hadn't have been you, it would've been somebody else, April.

Now. you just target about that.

Start concentrating on your ex-husband...

because the quicker he gets his percent...

the quicker you're gonna get your .

When I was with Wendell the other day. He said that he knew where Jack was.

Did he tell you where?

No. he wanted the information about MacArthur Mining first.

Come on. April. you're a smart girl. He's just stringing you along.

What do you mean?

Well. the only reason he told you that he knew where Jack was...

was to keep your information coming in.

Well. maybe. But he seemed awfully sure about it.

Yeah.

Well. the next time you see Wendell. You see ii he really knows where Jack is.

Lay you odds he doesn't.

Did seem strange that you couldn't find Jack and he could.

Exactly.

I got a lot of men working on that. Jack will show up soon enough.

And then?

Then you won't need anybody. honey.

You'll have so much money. You can paper your walls with it.

[INTERCOM BUZZES]

PAUL: Yeah? WOMAN: Mr. Krebbs is here to see you.

PAUL: Send him light in.

- Hello. Hay. - Paul. good to see you.

- How you doing? - Just fine.

I've got something here I want you to see.

- What might that be? - Take a look.

RAY: Donna and Dowling.

Donna and Dowling.

So what? I told you she was seeing him.

And you were light.

But ii you wanna convince a judge. You need pictures.

Well. pictures like these won't convince anybody of anything.

They're just two people talking.

Yeah. but with the light story behind them...

they could do as much damage as if they were pictures of them in bed.

Well, I think that is a little underhanded.

What do you think this is all about. Hay?

I tried talking you out of it, but you wouldn't listen to me.

Now. ii you wanna go ahead with this...

you're gonna have to face the realities of how tough a custody battle can be.

Yes. but I know Donna well enough to know...

that there': nothing going on between the two at them.

The judge doesn't.

Get back here. John Ross.

Never. I'm never gonna get back there. No way.

Yes. you are.

- I got you now. - Oh. no.

- Let me see. Come on, John Ross. - Hey. hey. hey. Come back here.

Come back here.

Didn't I tell you I don't want you playing in the house anymore?

- Now. you go play outback. - Okay. Mommy.

Go get one of your g*ns. I'll meet you out back.

Be light out.

Okay. I don't want you to play in this house anymore.

- Go on. Hurry up. JOHN ROSS: Okay.

I'm sorry. I hope they weren't bothering you.

No. they are kind of noisy, I guess...

but it's nice that they're having fun again.

Hey, you look wonderful.

- Well. thank you. - You going somewhere?

As a matter of fact. I am. I'm going to meet MI. Valentine.

He thinks he has found the new Valentine Gill.

Mm.

- Well. have a good time. - Thank you. I won't be late.

CLAYTON: Good luck with the new gill. - Oh. thank you. Bye-bye.

[INTERCOM BUZZES]

Yes. Phyllis?

Bobby. there's a Mr. Dunn from MacArthur Mining to see you.

Good. send him in. Thank you.

- Fulton. come on in. - Bobby. Well. how are you doing?

Fine. I'm fine. Sit light down. BOY. is this a nice surprise.

I was hoping we could finalize this deal today.

Well. I'd like to. but. well. There's something that's come up.

What do you mean. Something's come up?

Well. there's no use b*ating around the bush.

Tell you the truth, I got a better offer.

Fulton. we had a deal.

Oh. I know we did. but. well. MI. Ewing. Times are tough light now...

and when MI. Wendell came to see me...

Wait a minute.

You're telling me you've been out trying to top my offer?

Oh. no. it's not like that.

No. I didn't go to Wendell. He came to me.

Doesn't make any difference to me who came to who.

If you're trying to get another cent out of me...

you're out of your mind.

Now, look, I'm not out to start any kind of bidding w*r...

between you and Wendell.

Hell. I don't want you to even bid against him.

I just want you to match his otter. That's all.

Well. let me tell you something. pal.

If you do have an offer from Wendell, you'd better take it.

It's the only one on the table now.

Now. Bobby. There's no reason to get so mad.

When I give my word. It means something to me.

It's a shame yours doesn't mean anything.

This meeting': over. Get the hell out of here.

Where are you. John Ross? I'm ready.

[g*n CLICKING]

[GLASS BREAKING]

[CRYING]

Oh. my God. My God. John Ross, what happened?

Christopher tried to sh**t me.

I didn't mean to.

Christopher, are you all light? - Yeah. I guess so.

- Ale you all light? - I'm okay.

All light. come inside. Come on. look out ! the glass.

Be careful.

Be careful.

Here. sit down over on the couch.

I want to look you over, see if you got any glass on you.

- Sit down. JOHN ROSS: I'm okay.

Christopher, what were you doing with your father's g*n?

We were just playing.

But you knew it was a real g*n?

Yes.

Kind of.

Don't you know that you could have been k*lled...

or that you could have k*lled somebody?

We didn't do anything wrong.

We were just playing.

Now, I want the two of you to listen to me very, very closely.

Now. what you two did was not a game.

I don't know how to impress upon you enough...

that when it comes to g*ns. People can get hurt very badly.

I'm sorry. I didn't know that would happen.

No. I guess you didn't.

Now, the two of you go to your room...

and stay there until your parents get home.

- But I didn't do anything. - You heard Clayton.

Now. you march up those stairs. And not another word.

Go ahead. March.

Oh. Clayton.

Do you know what might have happened?

I know.

Where is she? I swear.

Try and make somebody a star. Somebody? Ha.

I mean nobody.

- Hello. can I help you? - Ml. Valentine. it's me. Lori.

Well. where have you been? And what are you wearing?

You look like a bag lady. What did you think you were auditioning ?

Good Housekeeping ad?

- No. I'm sorry I'm late. bub... But nothing.

Get in and get undressed before Mrs. Ewing gets here.

Thank God she didn't see you like this.

Well. what are you waiting ? Get going.

Well. Mrs. Ewing. Come on in.

Oh. by the way. I just want you to know I feel just terrible about Jamie.

- Pool gill. - Well. thank you. MI. Valentine.

It's made me do a lot of thinking about our operation out there...

and I've decided to shut down the Los Angeles branch.

Shut down the L.A. branch? But you can't do that.

Well. it's not a matter ! Debate. I've made up my mind.

Okay. okay. fine. But just one minute.

I have something to show you that might change your mind.

- Hurry up, darling. - All right, I'm ready.

Wait till you see this.

Introducing the new Valentine Gill.

Oh.

Christopher, I understand that you didn't know the g*n was loaded.

But you never should have been playing with it in the first place.

I'm sorry. Daddy. I won't do it again.

That's light, because you're going to have a long grounding to think about it.

Don't look at me. Your mother's light.

- How long? PAM: Two weeks.

No television and no playing alter school.

That should be enough time ! You to think about what you've done.

- Two weeks, Dad? - Not another word.

You're lucky that's all you're getting.

Christopher. We're not doing this to be mean.

You understand that. don't you?

Yeah. I guess so.

Pal. we're doing this because we love you.

I want you to understand what a serious thing it is...

to be playing with a g*n.

These g*ns are to! protection. They're never to be played with.

Yes. Daddy.

PAM: Christopher?

You know that we love you.

I love you guys too. Mommy.

All right, well, wipe those tears away. Try and get some sleep.

Okay, Mommy. Good night.

- Good night, Daddy. - Good night, pal.

Now. Christopher. I'm gonna put this g*n away.

And when I think the time is light ! you to learn how to use it...

I'll teach you.

Until then. you're not to touch it. You understand?

Yes. sir.

All light. Now get some sleep.

This would never have happened ii there were no g*ns in this house.

There's nothing wrong with g*ns.

I grew up around g*ns. So will Christopher.

But I can guarantee you that he won't touch this one again.

Well. I hope you're light.

Now. honey. I'm sorry I forgot to ask. How was Cliff taking Jamie's death?

Oh. well. he was bothered about it at first.

But he was more upset about losing the deal with Pogue.

I swear to you. I did not know that Cliff was interested in that company.

Pogue came to me.

'Well, I know that, but Cliff doesn't believe it.

You know, I really don't care anymore what Cliff believes.

Well. what Cliff believes is that I'm spying on him ! you.

And J.R. believes that I'm spying on him ! Cliff.

I think the whole thing is absurd.

You're not spying on anybody or ! anybody.

I know, but I feel like I'm in the middle of a tunnel...

with trains coming in opposite directions.

Come here.

Pam, I know how hard all of this is for you.

But I promise nothing like this will ever happen again.

- I hope not. - I guarantee it.

Okay-

Oh. and anyway, while I'm arguing with Cliff in his office...

Jamie's landlady called from California.

Well. what did she want?

She said Jamie's rent was due and that if Cliff didn't get her things...

she was gonna give them away.

So is he going?

- Mm-hm. And I said I'd go and help him. - Yeah. I think you should.

- When are you leaving? - Tomorrow morning.

- How long will you be gone? - Just a day or two.

Okay-

Maybe you can calm him down on the trip.

- I hope so. but you know Cliff. - Mm. Everybody knows Cliff.

[PHONE RINGING]

- Hello? DONNA [ON PHONE]: Hay.

Donna?

Yeah.

How are you doing. Hay?

Well. as good as could be expected. I guess.

- How are you and the baby? - Oh. the baby's just fine.

It's not gonna belong now.

Yeah, probably right after the divorce, huh?

Ray...

Well. don't tell me you got lonely and don't have anybody else to talk to.

Well. I'll be coming down to Dallas in a couple of days.

You know. To! the property settlement.

And I just thought we should talk about it first.

All right.

I also wanted to know how everything was at Southfork.

- What do you mean? - Well. the sh**ting.

Ewings are the talk of the town.

I would've thought the talk of the town around Washington...

was you and Senator Bowling.

The senator is a fine man. Hay. Hard-working.

A gentleman.

Sounds like the perfect man ! you.

Senator. gentleman. Everything I'm not.

- That's not what I meant. - That's how it sounded.

Well. it's not getting us anywhere. Is it?

I guess maybe I shouldn't have called.

Look...

if you called to try and make it easier at the meeting...

don't worry about it.

I've accepted the fact that you and I were never light to! each other.

I guess you're doing okay.

Yeah. I'm doing fine now.

Look, I gotta get up early in the morning.

Get to bed now.

Figure we've said all there is to say.

I understand. Good night, Hay.

Good night.

CLIFF: Look at all this stuff.

He! mail, she didn't even open it.

It's so sad, Cliff.

- Look at this. This looks legal. - Well. open it. it might be important.

Okay-

What is it?

CLIFF: It's Jamie's will.

A will?

Why would someone Jamie's age have a will?

Oh. it's almost as though she had a premonition.

Oh, my God, Cliff, it's a postcard from Jack.

- Do you think he even knows? - Oh. is there an address?

- No. but there's a phone number. - Call it. Will you call it ! me?

Don't you think you ought to?

No. I don't wanna call it because he hates me.

Call it ! me.

Wait a minute. No. Maybe I should talk to him.

No. it's been disconnected. Call him from the hotel.

I don't know. I guess that's it. Golly.

- Hard to believe. - I know.

Come on, let's go, Cliff.

Do you have Jamie's safety-deposit key?

- No. you didn't give it to me. - Yes. I did.

- Yeah. - Huh? You did? Wait a minute.

I got it.

What time is that probate lawyer supposed to meet us at the bank?

- First thing in the morning. - Okay.

We'll go, we'll do that, and then you can go on back to Dallas.

And I'm gonna go over and see that Mary...

the gill that Jamie was with when she d*ed.

- Well. Cliff. I'll go with you. - No. Just gonna do it alone.

- Come on. - Huh? Yeah.

[GIGGLING]

- I love it. WENDELL: Good.

I like my reliable employees to be happy.

Well. you've certainly made this one happy.

We'll take it. Would you wrap it up? Put it on my account.

Certainly. MI. Wendell.

I'll be light back.

This coat is only the beginning.

Information like the last time. You should do very well in Dallas.

I'd do even better if I knew where Jack was.

Are you gonna tell me now?

You let me worry about Jack.

You just start thinking about all this money you're gonna be making.

You know. money isn't the only thing that makes a person happy.

Well. I suppose there are people out there who would agree with you.

All the ones without money, of course.

Don't you ever feel like you need a friend?

I have all the friends I need.

- Well. I don't have any. - Well...

That's a shame. April. What do you want me to do about it?

Be my friend.

I told you I don't need any more friends. What I need are reliable employees.

Now. to be perfectly frank, April...

if you wanted friends, you never should've come to Dallas.

Now. look at it this way.

There are more important things than (fiends...

one of which is to make ends meet by getting me information.

I've already told you everything that I know.

What about this rumor?

I've heard that Bobby is running the company. Is that true?

- Yes. it's true. - Well...

That could explain why they didn't match my offer for MacArthur Mining.

You know why J.R. Is no! running things?

Not exactly.

All I know is that he was very upset about the sh**ting...

and he's gonna let Bobby run things ! a while.

I'd like you to Lind out just how long J.R. is really gonna stay away.

If I can.

Well. you can. April.

You see, although we can never be friends...

you really don't want me as an enemy.

So I will be expecting your call. Bye-bye.

Looks kind of big to me.

- Ray. - Hi.

What are you doing here?

I came looking ! you.

I'm not very proud of what I've done lately...

"ignoring you and Charlie.

We've both missed you. But we understand.

I know you do.

I've been thinking about it.

I'd like to start seeing you again.

Well. there's nothing I'd like better.

But you know what your lawyer said.

Yes. I know what he said.

Hay. please.

I don't wanna be the cause of your losing your custody battle.

Well. Jenna. I don't think it'll make a difference.

And if it does, I don't care anymore.

What I care about is you and Charlie. I wanna go on seeing you.

I've been shutting you out of my life, and that is wrong.

So. what do you say. huh?

WOMAN: Wouldn't this be just perfect for your wife?

[LAUGHING]

Who would have thought...

that you and I would be sitting across from each other like this?

It has been a long time.

Too long. Much too long.

WAITER: Will there be anything else. sir?

- No. we have everything we need. - Thank you. Enjoy your evening.

Please. allow me.

I like the new Sue Ellen more and more.

Then I hope you like the little surprise I have planned lo! you.

Surprise?

A suite at one of Dallas' finest hotels.

: ':

Okay. A certificate to! shares of Southland Photography.

A birth certificate.

A marriage certificate.

One pink slip ! A convertible.

One wedding band. Gold and diamond.

A bank account ! $ million.

And a certificate ! percent of Ewing Oil.

Can I see that?

Sorry. everything must be med with the probate report.

Oh, yeah, okay. I understand.

- Is that it? - That appeals to be all.

CLIFF: Isn't that enough?

Well. it's odd the divorce decree wasn't in there.

No, there's nothing odd about that.

Well. it's obvious she was very well organized.

Why wouldn't she have it in her safety-deposit box with the other things?

We were only divorced a month or two.

It's no big deal anyway. Jack gets everything she had.

Why shouldn't he?

No. I'm not saying that he shouldn't. I'm just thinking.

Don't strain YOURSELF.

- Did you say something? - No. never mind.

- Ml. Foreman. thank you. - Certainly. Mrs. Ewing.

MI. Barnes. once again. May I offer my condolences?

Yeah. uh. how long is this gonna be in probate?

Until the heirs to he! estate claim it.

There's only one. That's he! Brothel. We're trying to locate him.

It won't take long lo! him to show up and pick up all the marbles anyways.

Will it?

No.

[INTERCOM BUZZES]

PAUL: Yeah? WOMAN: Mrs. Krebbs is here.

- Hello. - Hello. Paul.

I'm sorry I'm late. But. Well. the plane and...

That's all light.

Donna.

REY -

Miss Gordon. Paul Morgan. We talked on the phone.

- Ml. Krebbs. - Nice to meet you.

Miss Gordon.

To tell you the truth. this is the cleanest settlement I've ever had.

Well. now that we're all here. Might as well get started.

I've explained everything to Donna.

This won't take long.

What this says...

is that any property acquired by either party in the marriage...

whether by earnings, inheritance, bequest, gifts...

or rents. issues or profits thereof...

shall remain the property of the party so acquiring.

In plain English. This is what we've all agreed to. light?

GORDON: Yes.

It means there's no community property.

You'll each leave the marriage with what you brought into it.

PAUL: Any questions?

Well. all you have to do is sign the papers.

Thank you.

That should do it. Thank you. MI. Morgan.

Thank you.

I'll see you in a couple of weeks.

Donna.

Just wait a minute. I need to talk to him.

Sure. I'll be light here.

REY -

- Can't we talk? - What about?

I figure we said about everything there is to say to each other already.

- It just... it just all seems so final. - What did you expect?

Isn't this what usually happens between two people that get divorced?

Don't be like that.

Like what?

Like a man that just about lost everything he ever wanted in his life?

His wife, his child.

It I sound bitter about this. I'm sorry. Donna. but I just can't help it.

I'm sorry too.

Well. why don't you just go back to Washington?

Do whatever it is that makes you happy back there.

I'm fine.

It's taken me a while...

but I think I finally got you out of my system.

[PHONE RINGING]

Hello?

[KNOCKING ON DOOR]

I'll be light there.

Who is it?

CLIFF: Miss McCall. it's Cliff Barnes. Jamie's ex-husband.

What do you want?

Well. I wanted to talk to you about Jamie.

Why?

Can I come in?

Just wondered if you could tell me what happened.

Look. I know that Jamie probably didn't speak very highly of me.

Not that I gave he! any reason to. I didn't treat he! that well, but...

You're damn light. You treated he! like dirt.

You're light.

I'm sorry to have bothered you. Miss McCall.

Hold on.

Go ahead. sit down. I'll talk to you. Sit.

- We were lock climbing in Mexico... - Yeah.

On the southern tip of the Sierra Madras. Mount Orizaba.

There was a terrible rockslide. And Jamie was leading at the time.

You know. all I remember...

is this giant wall of locks covering Jamie and coming at me.

And the next thing I knew...

I was pulling myself out of the whole mess.

I called Jamie's name over and over and over...

but there was no answer.

I don't know how...

but I got myself back to this village that we had passed on the way up.

- Those were the people that found her? - Yeah.

At least. That's what the doctors tell me.

I went into a coma right after I reached the village.

I was unconscious ! two weeks.

That's it. I mean. That's all I remember.

- Well. thank you. Miss McCall. - That's Mary Elizabeth.

Mary Elizabeth.

I know that had to be hard ! you.

Hey. please don't. I don't need money.

I was gonna give you something till you get out of your cast.

No.

Okay-

I'm gonna give you a card...

and if there's anything you need, please...

don't hesitate to call.

I will.

MI. Barnes.

I think you ought to know that Jamie really did care about you.

No matter what her friends said, she always stuck up for you.

Okay- Goodbye. Mary Elizabeth. Thank you.

- Hey, Morn. - Oh, hi, honey.

- What smells so good? - We're having turkey.

Turkey?

- What for? - For you.

I know I haven't been in the best of moods lately...

but I think that's over now.

So. what put you in this good mood?

Mm... nothing, really.

Just tiled of moping around. I guess.

I'll tell you what.

Why don't you wash up...

and put on a dress or something pretty. huh?

- Why? - I don't know.

You can never tell when a guest might show up unexpectedly.

A Quasi?

Mom. no one ever comes over except ! my friends.

Well. we'll see.

[KNOCKING ON DOOR]

- Hey, Hay. - Charlie.

Mom. how come you didn't tell me?

I wanted it to be a surprise.

- How you doing. honey? - Fine. Hay.

- But I thought you said you weren't... - I know what you thought.

But that's all changed now.

From now on. things are gonna be just like they used to with us. okay?

All light.

- Yeah. these look good. - Yeah. not bad at all.

- Well. look here. - Hello. everybody. We're home.

ELLIE: Just in time ! dinner. - Clayton.

How'd things go in California?

'Well, all right, I guess. We got all of Jamie's things.

Is something wrong. Pam?

It was a little eerie being there among all of her things.

And the strangest thing of all is that we found a will...

almost as though she had a premonition or something.

I suppose she left everything to that brother of hers.

Yes. she did. But she never signed the will.

She didn't Sign?

No, I guess it came after she'd left for Mexico.

She was to sign it and return it to he! lawyer.

She never did.

What a dreadful thing. I can't believe Jamie's gone.

Yeah. but there's something worse.

It means Jack's gonna be getting his percent of Ewing Oil back.

That's as it should be. J.R.

Besides. we're not even sure that Jack's aware that Jamie's dead.

Oh, don't you worry about that.

'With percent of Ewing Oil at stake, he'll be sniffing around soon enough.

Sooner than you think.

You told me you didn't know where Jack was.

We found a postcard in Jamie's apartment with his number. so I called.

No answer. But I'm gonna call him again tonight.

Oh. well. How very considerate of you. Pam.

J.R., knock it off. It's his percent. He deserves it.

Well. If that's all there was to it. It wouldn't be so bad.

- What are you talking about? - I'm talking about that floozy. April.

Now that Jack's getting his percent, it won't be long...

It won't be long before April's snooping around. trying to get he! percent.

And pretty soon everybody in Texas is gonna own a piece of Ewing Oil.

[SCOFFS]
