Five or six of these guys,

Hounding down beers,
startin' bonfires.

I mean, these guys
were bad dudes.

g*ng bangers.

-Did you call for backup?

In the strongest of
all weapons, words.

Anyway, eight or
nine of these guys--

-I thought it was five or six.

I just find it hard to believe

They're prisoners from
the malibu work camp.

They send 'em in to clean
up the litter on the beach.

I bugged vic until
he finally caved in

somewhere I could thaw out.

[Grunting]

The surf's been getting a
little bigger the last hour.

'til the sets get smaller.

I swim every day
at the y back home.

-Well, a pool's a little
different than the ocean.

-I'm ok in the water.

-You guys, let's go ahead!

They're at the code three.

What happened?

-He was body surfing.

hook up with burnett
and john, start a grid search.

-We're on it!

-Sherri: vic! Vic!

La county lifeguards.

I'm the lifeguard in
charge of the rescue.

I understand your husband--

-He's out there.

-Can you tell me the color
of his swimming trunks?

-Oh um, blue with
little sailboats on them.

But he's a really good swimmer.

-Ok, it's fine.

Was he taking any medication

Or drinking before
he went in the water?

-No.

Why can't you just bring him in?

All right, I'm gonna
call off the search.

I want every available lifeguard

At oh five thirty.

piece of equipment,

we have access to.

There's still no
sign of your husband.

He doesn't have his

while he went body surfing.

couple of big waves

to him, but I did.

your plan of rescue?

-I knew that backup was
at least five minutes away,

And there was no
one on duty yet.

But I was so tired and I knew

That the only sh*t that we had

Was if we made it
through the drop zone

And swam to shore.

But this huge wave came,

And it tumble dried us.

The impact wa--

I lost my grip on him.

I went down and I
kept diving and diving

Looking for him.

-April, you're gonna be ok.

it may be a good idea

Maybe get some counseling.

-Cb radio: two convicts
escaped from venice beach

On work detail.

We're closing down the beach.

For the accommodations

days, 12 miles,

escaped convicts.

We launched to intercept.

trying to escape via the cliff.

sheriff's and the interstate.

[Grunting]

-Pilot: group lalb,
this is coast guard 6518.

Arrived on the scene and are
evaluating the situation.

-Commence rescue check,
part two.

-Rescuer: group 6518,
man on cliff is in trouble.

We're preparing
for a cliff rescue.

Swimmer's at the door.

Swimmers connect at rescue

Ready [mumbles]
for cliff rescue.

-Coast guard:
roger, commence voice.

-Pilot: swimmer's
outside the aircraft.

are at the aircraft.

-Cb radio: lalb this
is 6518, voice complete.

We are transporting the prisoner

To malibu substation.

-I don't know--
