I had a feeling
that something terrible

I became incredibly calm,
my mind was clear,

Clearer than it's ever been.

And I know that there was backup
right there.

All I had to do

There was no warning, nothing.

From that moment,
everything in my life changed.

I had to move in with my aunt,

different school.

I never really fit in.

My mom went
into a severe depression,

And, uh,

She d*ed a few years later.

Did you ever hear
from your dad again?

Well, we got a collect
phone call from him

The day of her funeral,

But my aunt
wouldn't accept the charges.

So anyway, when that guy came
into the shower,

And I saw your reaction,

When he told you
that you had a son,

My heart broke.

I couldn't help but think,
maybe my dad didn't know.

He knew, he knew where you were,
he called you.

No, what I mean is,
maybe he didn't know

How much I really needed him.

Because there were times
when I was sad and lonely,

Or times when I was being
pushed around by some bully,

Or just lying in bed
at night afraid of the dark.

I'd always dream that my dad
would come and save me,

And he never did.

I get it.

About this trip?

Yes and no, it's a club,

Volunteers who protect
our beaches.

We do the maintenance,
pay the bills,

Sweep the floors,
do the laundry, and cook.

And you work regular shifts?

We call them patrols, yeah.

So, how do you join?

How did you become a lifeguard?

Passed a test.

Probably the same kind
of test we take,

And it's more
than just physical ability.

You have to know you can depend
on one another.

Claire was a member,

But he can't continue to stay,
not alone.
