[alert buzzes]

-[John B] My old man used to tell me…
-[camera clicks]

…it's best to never say
you've hit rock bottom.

[alert buzzes]

"Trust me," he said…

"You can always go lower."

"And the thing about hell

is there's always another one below."

[alert buzzes]

[gavel striking]

John Booker Routledge, pursuant
to the North Carolina statute section ,

you are charged
with m*rder in the first degree

with aggravated circumstances.

If convicted, the maximum sentence
would be the death penalty.

-[gavel strikes]
-[people clamoring]

-Your Honor, he's .
-Stop.

[judge] Quiet.

-He's ! Are you kidding me?
-[Pope] You're good.

-[judge] Bailiff!
-Hey, John B, we're gonna figure it out.

John B! John B!

-John B! No!
-[Kie] Sarah!

-[Pope] Sarah!
-[Kie] Stop! Don't touch her!

Let's go, Sarah. Let's get out of here.

[man] Everybody out. Let's go.

-[woman] Justice is served.
-[man] He had it coming.

Is this a joke? Like, are we in hell or…?

-I should have never come home.
-They're gonna k*ll him, guys. I know it.

[Hugh] Sorry for what you
and your family have gone through.

Thank God the system works.

Can you please shut up?
Of course you think the system worked

because it was made
to protect you and people like you.

He'll have his day in court.
A jury will decide.

He shouldn't even be in court!
You should, 'cause you're a m*rder*r.

You have a lot of nerve
showing up to court.

I know you're upset.
I understand you're upset, okay?

-Upset?
-I know he's got you fooled.

-He's got you all fooled.
-No, I'm not just upset!

[indistinct yelling]

Show some respect!

-Muzzle your goddamned dog!
-Get off her!

Why don't you take the Kooks down
for a change?

You wanna get arrested?
Get out! You need to go.

-This is bullshit.
-Come on. Look, it's not worth it.

Sorry, you shouldn't
be going through this.

-Thank you.
-Have a good night.

[Shoupe] Get out of here.

It's not a coincidence
that your daughter's sitting with us.

-[Plumb] Keep going. Nothing to see.
-[Shoupe] Party's over.

[Plumb] Show's over, folks.
Keep it moving. Let's go.

-[Shoupe] Let's go, folks. Let's get home.
-[Plumb] Get home.

[reporter] Local teenager
John Booker Routledge

has been charged with first-degree m*rder

in the sh**ting death of beloved
Kildare County Sheriff Susan Peterkin.

Routledge evaded
law enforcement during the recent storm

and was presumed to be dead at sea,

but after witnesses saw him
back on the island,

authorities moved quickly
to apprehend him.

If convicted, he faces the death penalty.

-[instrumental rock music playing]
-[alert buzzes]

[John B] We were out in the marsh
and came across a sunken Grady-White…

with stacks and stacks of gold bars.

And Lana told me that my father…

my father had d*ed,

stranded,

alone.

[dramatic music playing]

-[thunder crashing]
-[weeping, sniffling]

I'm gonna testify under oath. I was there.

I just need to get a hold of my sister.

-Sister?
-[Sarah] Kie, do you have your phone?

Wheezie is the only other person
that knows Rafe wasn't home that day.

-Wheezie?
-[Sarah] I don't know what else to do.

I got us into this mess.
I'm gonna do my best to get us out.

[scoffs] Wheezie? Yeah, that will work.

Well, she's right about one thing.
We gotta do something.

Our boy is a PO-dub right now, okay?

He's held c*ptive by the enemy right now,
maybe even scheduled for execution.

-Are we just gonna sit here?
-What's the plan? We kidnap Shoupe?

Maybe, like,
that's not the worst idea actually.

-Oh, it's not?
-No!

That is actually
the worst idea I've ever heard.

-It's pretty bad.
-You know? Please, just stay out of this.

Okay, Pope, look,
we've been doing everything your way,

and how has that been working out?

Okay, okay, so what's your plan?

You gonna storm a jail, g*ns a-blazing?

Look, Pope,
all I'm trying to get you to understand

is they got our boy.

Are we just gonna sit here and do nothing?
No! We're gonna go get his ass.

We're gonna do something about it!

JJ, we're not storming a jail.
It's not happening.

No, fine, man.
Sit in your comfy chair. Do nothing.

I'm gonna see what I can do.

Make something happen,
even if I have to do it by myself.

Okay.

[thunder crashes]

-Should we be worried?
-Yes, for sure.

Look, I'm gonna hit my parents, and I'm
gonna see if I can get money for a lawyer.

John B has a public defender.
He doesn't need that now.

Are you crazy? Justice costs money.

You're right.

So I'm gonna dig in hard into anything
I can find out about this key,

because that tape Limbrey has,
that's exculpatory evidence.

That can exonerate John B.

Yeah, we gotta try.

[soft guitar music playing]

We'll talk about it later.

Okay?

[Rose] That little jerk called you
a m*rder*r in front of the entire island.

-Here, baby.
-[sighs] I know, Rose.

It's just gonna get worse.

With John B and Sarah both
testifying against us and Gavin missing…

There was nothing I could do
about Gavin, all right?

-I told you. He came at me.
-Hey, I know. Baby, I know.

Ward, I'm… I'm talking about how it looks.

It seems like there's a pattern.

-Hmm.
-If Shoupe believes John B's story--

-No, he won't. He won't.
-What if he does?

If he does, look around.

All of this, everything… goes away.

-I know that, Rose.
-It's gone.

-You think I don't know that?
-We have to do something!

-What?
-No.

No. Talk to Shoupe.

-I talked to him.
-Ward, talk to him again.

-He's not gonna do anything else for us.
-There has to be somebody--

There's not.

There has to be somebody
that can help us, Ward. Think.

There might be someone,
but it's a long sh*t.

[dramatic music playing]

[sirens blaring in distance]

[sighs]

Half before. Half after.

Make it look like we talked about, okay?
That… that part is important.

It needs to look like…

[sighs]

It's gotta show that he abandoned her.

Like su1c1de.

Yeah, I understand.

So, you got a guy?

Okay then.

Tonight.

Look, Terry, I know this isn't easy.
This is hard for me too. It's…

But this bastard k*lled Susan.

I was there.

I tried to save her on the tarmac.

She was bleeding out.

So, he's gonna get
the death penalty anyway, you know.

I just feel like I need you to understand

what you're doing
for me and for my family.

You're helping me get my daughter back.

Why do you do this sh*t to me, Pope?
Hmm? I mean, what did I do to you?

Look, I'm just trying to do
what's right and save my friend.

Unfortunately,
our relationship is collateral damage.

Oh, I'm gonna collateral
your head in, hmm?

-It's just a truck.
-Just a truck? Lord have mercy.

You telling me you wouldn't crash
a truck for your best friend?

-You wouldn't crash a truck for Donny?
-I wouldn't crash sh*t for Donny.

[chuckles]

Yes, you would.

Dad, this Limbrey person is legit.

I believe she has evidence
that can clear John B.

I'm sure of it. I heard the tape.
She wants to trade the evidence

for some key that she thinks
is in our family somewhere.

Hold on.
She found a picture of it at an auction.

Do you recognize this?

I don't know what
you done got yourself involved with, Son,

but it ain't good.

So, encouraging you should be
the last thing I want to do right now.

But yes,

it looks like something my grandmother
used to wear around her neck.

Mee-maw?

I remember seeing this
when I was a little boy.

-Do you know where it is?
-She… she used to wear it every day.

I… I don't know, Son.

This looks like the drawings she made
when she started forgetting things.

You can start by checking
her old apartment above the pharmacy.

[sighs]

Thank you.

-You be careful, okay?
-Yes, sir.

-I love you.
-[Pope] Love you too, Pop!

[soft guitar music playing]

Mom.

Dad.

Oh, thank God. [sighs] Oh my God.

Where have you been? We were up
all night long. I was at a hospital.

Well, the truck broke down,
and then my phone d*ed.

And we didn't have a plug. I--

[laughs]

Well, of course.
That makes complete sense.

The plug? Of course. The plug. [laughs]

Yeah.

John B's back.

Yeah, I heard that.
I heard that on the news.

I heard he's arrested for m*rder.

Yeah, but he didn't… he didn't do it,
okay? I promise. Somebody's framing him.

And he's gonna need money
for a good lawyer.

[scoffs]

I can't do this with you.

Mom, this is really important.

You didn't even call me.

John B's been arrested for m*rder.

I mean, do you understand that?
It's not all about you.

Yeah. [laughs]

That's exactly what I was thinking
at four in the morning

when I was on the beach looking to see
if your body had washed up.

I was definitely thinking,
"This is all about me."

Jesus, honey, you treat me like sh*t.

You treat me like sh*t.

You don't even trust me.

Why should I trust you?
All you do is lie to me!

When have I lied to you?

Kiara, stop it!
Everything you're doing is for these boys.

-It's about the boys.
-[Anna] It is always about the boys.

You're putting these boys
above everything else.

[Kie] God, you are so worried

that I'm gonna sleep
with a Pogue like you did!

Well, guess what? I already did.

-Let me handle this. This--
-No, no. No! No! I'm done.

I don't think you have any idea how hard
we have worked to try and give you

opportunities that other kids do not have!

How many times do I have to tell you guys
that I don't care about those things?

Yes, and you should!

Well, I'm sorry. I don't!

Look, I'm a Pogue, and I always will be!

-This is why I hate coming back here!
-You hate coming back here?

Baby, you wanna live like a Pogue?

Let me show you what that's like.

Go live like a freaking Pogue.

Get your butt out of my house!

Nobody's stopping you!

[dramatic music playing]

-[alert buzzes]
-[heavy door closes]

[guard ] Cell check in progress.

[guard ] On the gate.

[sighs]

[sighs]

[guard ] You take R .

I got a deal for you.

[inmate] What kind of deal?

The kind where I lose evidence,

get charges dismissed.

What do I got to do?

I can't hear
what you're saying, man, all right?

That's what I said.
I'm here to see John B Routledge.

Oh!

it was a free country and all, but, uh,

I guess you don't like freedom very much,

[sniffles] Check.

Step two, at exactly p.m. this evening,

you're going to have
an att*ck of acute appendicitis.

-Do you even know what appendicitis is?
-Yeah.

Remember eighth grade? Algebra final?

-Jesus Christ.
-Worked like a charm, okay?

Now, to sell it, you gotta

You got
some of that ghost face sunblock in here?

JJ, I'm in jail.
I have… a… a block of soap.

-Is it white?
-[hesitantly] Yes.

Perfect. That'll work. Take some of that.
Rub it into your face well, okay?

You don't want that sh*t rubbing off
when they check your vitals.

After that, run your hands
under cold water for five minutes.

After that, you're ready. Showtime, baby.
Stumble out and collapse, okay?

Once you're down on the ground squealing,
they'll rush you to the infirmary.

There, you just gotta convince the nurse
that that sucker's about to burst. Okay?

So, she's gonna take her hand,

and she's gonna put it
right here, okay? Right there.

When she does that,
she pushes down, don't do anything.

Just lay there.

that you let it rip, man.

Scream like your life depends on it,
like a lobster hitting the pot,

like you're passing

-Okay.

-[chuckles]
-Holy sh*t!

-I know, right?
-Holy sh*t!

-How did you even figure that out?
-It's so freaking cool!

Wait, do it again.

in the island room."

"Path to the tomb begins
in the island room." What does that mean?

Thank you.

Uh, yeah, ten-four. I'll be right there.
Thank you so much. Over.

Duty calls. I'll see you later, Officer.
Uh, you have a good night, though, okay?

Come on, Wheeze.

Is that you?

Wheeze?

Nah, not Wheezie.

-Where the hell is Wheezie?

Listen-- Whoa.

It's all good. I… I just…

I just… I needed

-Is that okay?
-Don't come near me.

-Who are trying to protect here? Huh?
-I'm trying to do the right thing.

-You're trying to do the right thing?
-I can't--
