Hi, hon.

Listen, I'm gonna be late

picking you up
for Matt's dinner.

There's been an
accident or something.

Traffic is really backed up.

Yeah, well, don't
worry about it.

I got stuck on E.R.
rotation at the last minute,

so I'm socked in for the night.

Oh, no. Matt's gonna
be so disappointed.

Yeah. Listen, uh,
Jane, I was thinking

of hiring a professional to find
Taylor and the baby, you know?

I got a few names. Uh...

JANE: Michael,

we've been through this.

Taylor wanted it this way.

MICHAEL: He's my
son, too, you know?

Thanks.

Besides, you know, I'm-I'm...
I'm getting the impression

that-that-that... that you don't
even want me to find the kid,

like-like, you're almost
happy he's gone.

Why are we having
this conversation again?

I mean, you're gonna do what
you want no matter what I say.

You know, I'm doing this for us.

Well, half of us wants
to have our own child.

Listen, Michael, I got to go.

There's too much
traffic to talk and drive.

I'll-I'll tell Matt
that you said hi.

- Jane, don't hang up.
- MAN: Yeah, let's go!

- Let's go! Let's go!
- (indistinct chatter)

- Yeah, I got it. Okay.
- Okay.

- Keep it moving.
- Yeah, I see the source...

LEXI: Everyone
in this hypocritical,

sanctimonious world
is out to drown you,

rip your legs off,
pull you under

and make you feel
like you're worthless.

- If you're gonna stay afloat...
- (Megan sighs)

you have to be the
toughest shark in the sea.

Got to bite first,
fast and often,

and k*ll the scum suckers
before they know what hit 'em.

I don't know.

Whatever Coop did...

LEXI (laughing): Coop.

Honey, he's the least of
your problems right now.

The world is out to get us.

Well, maybe, but you know,
when I've got a man in my life, it...

Honey, the last thing
you need right now

is another man in your life.

- (Kyle mumbling)
- Hey. -Good evening.

Great. Just what I needed.

- You know what?
- (Lexi clears her throat)

This party I'm supposed to
go to... it's for Matt Fielding.

He used to live in the building.

Are you sure you
don't want to come?

Well, Megan, it's sort of a
question of, "Matt, who?"

- Peter.
- PETER: Lexi.

- Love the hair.
- Didn't do it for you.

- Wow.
- Oh, what's with her?

She hates my guts.

Oh, I wouldn't be so sure.

Come on, let's sit down.

- Peter, you sit there.
- PETER: All right.

Kyle, did I mention that
I'm calling in sick tonight?

Well, you got the
day off anyway.

(Megan laughs)

My, a man being
nice. That's a change.

You know what?

It's too bad that you're taken.

Okay.

PETER: Well, Megan, it's
too bad about Coop. You know,

didn't help the practice,
either, him leaving like that.

Oh, men leaving... that's
the story of my life, you know?

Where the hell is Matt?

You know, I'm gonna grab a
bottle of wine, get us started.

Yeah, that Matt... He's
always on time, isn't he?

I mean, always right, too, Matt.

It's like having your
conscience right in front of you.

Not that that's such
a... a great thing.

JANE: Hey, guys, sorry I'm late.

Michael got held
up at the hospital.

He's not gonna make it.

(sighs)

So, what did I miss?

PETER: Well, we're
just kind of going

down memory lane here,

telling stories
about Saint Matt.

Oh, I got a great one.

Everybody was
new in the building.

I had just had a miscarriage.

And talk about
transference, I got a dog,

which, of course, I lost.

- (camera shutter whines) -Come
on, Jimmy. Good boy, good boy.

I mean, we take it all
for granted, you know?

I mean, I think
it's our generation,

or may-maybe everyone
who's ever been young,

but we get so consumed
with ourselves, our problems,

and it's always in a big hurry.

I know. It's so easy to, though.

Matt, do you realize this is
the first really terrible thing

that's ever happened to me?

I mean, my parents are
still alive, my grandparents.

(seagulls cawing)

I've never known
anyone who's ever d*ed.

I mean, personally.

Like anything could
really prepare you.

No.

- (camera shutter whines)
- MEGAN: You know what the truth is?

The truth is, the only
good men are gay men.

- So where is he anyway?
- MAN: Excuse me.

Amanda, there's a
call for you at the bar.

It's Dr. Mancini.

Oh, maybe Michael
can make it after all.

Thanks.

(clears throat)

(sighs)

Thank you.

Michael, coming to the party?

Um... no.

No, uh... I'm not.

Uh...

it's Matt.

What about him?

He's been in an accident.

He was k*lled.

Uh, I see. Um...

MICHAEL: You
better tell the others.

Yeah, I will, all right.

Um... of course.

Well, good morning.

(sighs) I lied

when I said you weren't
mentioned in Matt's journal.

You were.

- Really?
- Yes, really.

Go ahead, read it.

It's marked.

"Late one night,

"Peter filled me in on
the year after his arrest.

"He'd lost his license, he
was in jail, his life was a mess,

"until some judge
agreed to spring him.

But there was a price."

Before Mr. Beck gets
back, I want this settled.

The problem, Doctor, is that
no one will operate on Mr. Beck.

They all say his
heart is too weak.

He'd never survive surgery.

Judge Smith owed
us a favor, though,

and agreed to
release you from jail.

You want me to
operate on him here,

in his home?

We'll get you whatever
equipment you need.

What if I'm not
able to save him?

Hate to be blunt, but chances
are, he's not gonna make it.

Mr. Beck didn't get where he
is by betting on the wrong horse.

You'll save him.

He'll owe you his life.

And believe me, Doctor,
he's a good friend to have.

I realize that if
it ever came out

that you operated
without a license,

it could put your
career on thin ice,

and I want you to know that
I will never, ever tell a soul.

Well, I appreciate your concern.

Is there more to it than that?

I think I'm learning

that the past can
be a horrible burden.

Mm, I wonder what other kind
of juicy tidbits Matt has in here.

Give me that.

There something
in there about you?

First of all,

I never sh*t off my
mouth to Matt like an idiot.

And second, I don't

Amanda.

You better be careful

I think your nose is growing.

JANE: Here we go.

Oh, this is the way

Oh, you'll be fine without me.

I'm gonna miss you, though.

Aw, what you're gonna miss
