Over the course of this semester,

we are going to be watching
some amazing movies,

and we're gonna work
on our big class project

of making our own documentary together.

My name is Rome Howard.

Welcome to Introduction
to Documentary Filmmaking.

Okay.

I'm gonna be really honest with you.

I have absolutely no
idea what I'm doing.

It's been awhile since I've
been in a classroom, you know?

I used to go to this school.

We know.

[SCOFFS]

Okay, look. What you don't know

is that back when I came here,

there were only two other
Black kids in my grade,

and it was horrible.

I felt unwanted.

I felt ostracized and really alone.

Things got really dark for me,

and I honestly believe those experiences

are part of what contributed to

the depression I experience today.

But this... this is not a sad story,

because I eventually found
my voice through filmmaking.

That movie that I screened
here a few weeks ago,

it gave me the opportunity
to channel my pain

into something that helped people.

That's really why I'm here,

to help you have the same experience.

But the question is,

do you believe that you
have a story to tell?

and I was done with

the most important element

to good documentary filmmaking.

I made such a stupid mistake

in the first place that
landed me in prison,

or how I got more time
added to my sentence

for illegally getting a cellphone

so I could try to reach you.

Or how, with the help
of some good people,

I've gotten my life back on track.

what I really want to say is...

nothing.

I just want to listen.

I want to hear about my little girl.

Because what kills me more than anything

about our time apart

is that I haven't been
there to do that for you.

[BREATHES SHAKILY]

'cause I'm a former student.

Getting that must have been so hard.

I can't even imagine.

I mean, honestly, it
just kind of rocked me.

It's a condition where feelings
get really intense, you know?

Like sometimes I feel really happy,

almost too happy,

and then other times, I
feel really, really sad.

I feel those things
pretty much every day.
