[Renaissance music playing]

The very best.

Oh!

- Sorry.
- Oh, no, no, no.

It is I who must apologize, fair maiden.

- Oh, my.
- Mm?

- Wow. Wow.
- Huh?

- The leather or the metal?
- It's both.

- You like that?
- I do.

You, on the other hand...
Be still, my b*ating heart.

Oh, what, this old thing? Oh.

You are the fairest maiden in the land.

You're nuts.

I'm sorry I was asleep
when you got home last night.

Oh, that's okay. I was surprised
when I woke up and you weren't there.

I had to get up early
to help Preacher set up the tavern.

I thought you were avoiding me.

- No.
- No?

I wasn't, but I don't wanna fight either.

Just because we don't agree on something
doesn't mean that it has to be a fight.

I'll try to remember that.

- We have to go sign in with Muriel.
- Ah, Muriel.

[Mel] Okay.

You should stick around
for the knight's duel,

because it is the festival's
biggest moneymaker.

- Okay.
- Yeah.

Oh, look, there's Jack now.

- Hello.
- Hey, Muriel.

We're ready to sign in for our shifts.
I'm at the med tent, Jack's at the tavern.

Yes, well, you're late, but I forgive you.

So, Tim, this is Jack Sheridan.
He has been waiting for you to arrive.

Tim Lonergan.

Oh, you're Chris' brother.

You look a lot like him.

Hi. My name's Mel Monroe.

- Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.

It's an honor to meet you in person.

Yeah, same. What brings you to the fair?

Actually, I was just on my way to Oregon.

I went to the bar,
but your sign said that you were here.

- You came to see me?
- Yeah, I actually have something for you.

Can we...?

Yeah, I'll just wait for you over here.

- Okay?
- Yeah.

[clears throat] Sure.

What is this?

It's a letter Chris wrote my parents
right before he was k*lled.

I was cleaning out the garage, I found it
at the bottom of my mother's jewelry box.

That night you called
looking for my mom and dad...

I realized
how much guilt you were still carrying.

I told him I'd bring him home,
and I didn't.

I wanted you to hear this from me.

Chris wouldn't have blamed you,
and neither does my family.

I thought reading this letter
might help you let go some of that guilt.

It's nice of you to bring it to me
in person, and thank you.

Sorry, I can't quite get over
how similar you guys look.

I was pretty young when he enlisted.
I don't remember much,

but he used to call me the Tim Man

and pretend to put oil on me.

Yeah, he was funny as hell.

He was a good guy.

He was honest,

super loyal,

and whenever things got really bad,
he'd just...

He'd tell a joke,
and it would cut the tension in half.

Everybody loved him.

Listen, Jack...

From the bottom of my heart, I hope that
this letter helps you find some peace.

Thanks.

Hey.

- Hey.
- Hey, are you okay?

Yeah, I'm fine.

Honey, what did he want?

He gave me a letter
that Chris wrote before he d*ed.

He thought maybe
it might help me feel better.

- Oh, my gosh. Did you read it?
- No, not yet.

- Why don't we just go home?
- No.

Okay? Yeah.
We can sit together or you can be alone.

I got... I gotta do the tavern with Preach.
I got the duel this afternoon.

I know, babe,
but I think he can handle the tavern,

- your feelings are more important...
- I'm okay. Okay?

- You are?
- Trust me.

- Okay.
- Don't worry.

- I'll catch up with you later.
- Okay.

[theme music playing]

- Hi.
- Hi.

Oh, can I have my tabor pipe?

What's a tabor pipe?

The one I gave you to put in your pocket
so I wouldn't forget it.

Oh, I... Yeah,
I must have left it at the house.

- Can you drive back and get it?
- Do you really need it?

How will people know I'm a musician
if I don't have an instrument?

Well, there's gotta be a mandolin
or a lyre around here somewhere,

and I do not wanna drive
all the way back to the house.

It's minutes.

Each way.

Vernon, what's up with you today?
You're wound tighter than a ten-day clock.

I don't think we should get into it here.

We're supposed to meet up
with Denny any minute now,

and I want his first impression of you
to be positive.

I'll make sure
I'm my usual, delightful self.

Get into what?

- You really wanna know?
- I asked.

I know you canceled
the neurologist appointment.

I told you, Muriel doesn't know
what she's talking about.

I'm a doctor. I have my own sources.

- Why did you lie to me?
- Because I didn't wanna go.

And I'm tired of you
telling me what to do.

With you, it's just a one-way street.

What's that supposed to mean?

You have no trouble
bossing me or anyone else around,

but you can't even follow doctor's orders.

Hey, Denny.

Denny, how are you, son?

- Great, thanks.
- [Hope] I'm Hope.

Oh, it's good to finally meet you.

You too. Doc's told me
a ton of nice stuff about you.

Well, clearly,
you've got the Mullins charm.

So how have you been enjoying
Virgin River?

It's incredible.

Everyone's so friendly
and the hiking is awesome.

I've been thinking, at night that room
at the clinic gets hotter than Hades

because somebody refuses
to upgrade the air conditioning system.

It wasn't that bad.

Did you wake up sweating?

That's what I thought.

There's no reason for you to be miserable
when you can stay with us at the house.

Are you sure?

Absolutely.

Right, Vernon?

Of... No, of course.

Fabulous.

We'll leave a key under the mat
so you can come and go.

- Thanks. That's so generous of you.
- You're welcome.

I think you'll find our home
to be a bastion of peace and tranquility.

Hey, Muriel is looking for you, son.

- Oh, I'll see you guys later, then.
- [Vernon] Go.

Bye.

What the hell was that?

Me calling a truce.

- There you go.
- Thanks.

Here's the Henry VIII hat.

How do you know what hat the guy wore?

Because I was researching Anne Boleyn.
I looked it up.

You sure you want me to play
the guy who cut off your head?

Just put it on.

Okay. All right,
but I'm doing this for you.

- All right?
- Okay.

For you.

- [Brie gasps]
- Oh, God, I look ridiculous.

I think you look quite dashing.

We will take it.

Brave choice, Lady Boleyn.

- Thank you very much.
- Thank you.

Okay, let's go to the tavern.

A few drinks
will help me forget about the hat.

No, not for drinks.

I told Jack we'd stop by,
show him my costume.

Ah. Yeah, you know what?
Why don't you go ahead? I'll hang here.

I... I just... I don't wanna see him.

- Why?
- He came by my work last night

and kind of pissed me off.

I'm gonna need you
to be a little more specific.

He wanted to know what happened the night
of the sh**ting, so I told him everything,

but he kept pressing me and pressing me,

like I was holding back on him.

He's really stressed.

Everyone's stressed about something.

Brady, he's my brother.

If you guys can't be around one another,
that's gonna be a problem for me.

Look, ever since I got back from Iraq,

I have been trying
to get him to respect me.

No matter what I do, he still just...

He treats me like some dumb kid.

Right.

[crowd applauding]

Sheridan, you dirty scoundrel.

King John.

- Whoa.
- What? What's up?

Last year you wore a ball cap and shorts.

So you guys open or what?

Are you looking
for a drink there, constable?

It's my day off. You know it.

Well, give us five minutes
to tap the kegs.

As you wish.

So the outfit?

You know,
me and Lizzie are doing a scene together.

Yeah, and looking good, Romeo.

- So things are heating up between you two.
- Oh. No, but at least she's talking to me.

Hey, you know what they say.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Don't listen to him.
You gotta be bold. Tell her how you feel.

You guys are confusing me here. It's...

Well, how about I keep it simple?

- Grab another box of mead.
- On it.

Is something bothering you?

I'm all right.

Hey. What is it?

Lonergan's brother, Tim?

He's here.

At the fair?

Mm-hm.

Yeah, he wanted to give me a letter
that Chris had written his parents.

Oh.

Wow, that's heavy.

How you feeling?

It's eerie, you know?

His demeanor reminded me of Chris.

Yeah, yeah, I bet.

Listen, if you wanna bail,
I can handle things here.

No, no, no. I'm fine.
I'll shake it off. Thanks, though.

Hi.

Hey, you okay?

[sighs]

- What's wrong?
- Hope.

She canceled her neurologist appointment
the other day and she lied about it.

Oh, no.

And she's been so damn difficult
about her follow-up care. I...

Oh, well, I mean,
you know how independent Hope is.

It's hard for her to be relying on someone
when she's not used to it.

Someone? I'm not just someone.
I'm her husband.

Right, which is why
she's taking her frustration out on you.

- No good deed goes unpunished.
- Yeah.

Um, is it possible that you might have
left the drug cabinet open yesterday?

No, no, I wasn't even in there,
but check with Cameron.

Right.

Great.

- And one of these.
- Great. Thanks. That looks so good.

- Thank you.
- You're welcome.

Hey, guess what. Doc and Hope
just invited me to stay at their place.

It was mostly Hope. I think
Doc found out at the same time I did.

Cool. Do you wanna order something?

Yeah, I'll take a couple slices
of the almond cake, please.

So you excited?

About what?

Your performance. You and Ricky
are listed on the theater schedule.

I'm nervous.

You're gonna do great.
I'll be rooting for you.

- So you're gonna watch?
- Of course. Why wouldn't I?

I don't know. I...
I thought you weren't into Shakespeare.

Why would you think that?

I don't know.

Well, uh, anyway,
thanks for the tarts, and break a leg.

Thanks.

So I saw this little lyre
at a stand over there,

- the guy said I could use it all day.
- Oh. That is great.

- I'll see you at the duel.
- You bet you will, sire.

Mm-hm.

Julia. Wow.

Glad you could make it.

You guys look great.

Thank you, so do you.

Why, thank you.

Preacher, this is my niece, Maya.

Maya, this is my friend, Preacher.

Pleased to meet you, Maya.
So are you having fun?

Can I have my phone back?

I thought we agreed,
no phones while we're here.

I need to call my mom.

- Where's the bathroom?
- That way. Make a left.

I'm sorry, we were just over at archery,

and she's frustrated
because she didn't hit the target.

Most people don't hit it their first try.

But she's been taking lessons
and she expected to do better.

- She's obsessed with The Hunger Games.
- I'm a pretty good sh*t.

Maybe I could help.

Really? Well, if you can convince her
to go back and try again,

- that would be very heroic of you.
- Oh, well, one hero coming up.

- Meet me back here in an hour, Your Grace.
- Ooh. My liege.

Keep that on there.

Here's your tea.

Oh, thanks.

And I got you a coffee, Doc.

- That was very thoughtful. Thank you.
- No problem.

So did we solve the mystery
behind the unlocked drug cabinet?

Hey, uh, there's an emergency
at the maypole.

- What happened?
- That's what Muriel said, anyway.

Apparently, if nobody's dancing,

then as she put it,
the festival cannot be festive.

Oh, we can go.

- We? We can?
- Yeah. Yeah, we can.

The queen says
it's an emergency, we can go.

- You're good, right?
- [man] Okay.

You big into maypole dancing?

No, gosh, no.

I just... I... I can't have
that drug cabinet conversation with Doc.

- Why not?
- Because last night

when I went to the clinic,
Denny was going through the drug cabinet.

We have Schedule II dr*gs in there.

- What was he doing?
- He said he was looking for aspirin

and that the door was unlocked.

- But it's always locked.
- Exactly.

So the best-case scenario is that
one of us accidentally left it open.

Or Denny broke into the cabinet
and he lied about it.

He asked me not to tell Doc.

- Yeah, that's not a very good idea.
- I know.

But what if I tell Doc, and then
Denny happens to be telling the truth,

then I ruin their relationship?

But if he is lying,
then Doc deserves to know.

Yeah.

[Renaissance music playing]

A Roman by a Roman valiantly vanquished.

My spirit is going.

I can no more.

Noblest of men, woo't die?

Has thou no care of me?

Shall I abide in this dull world,

which in thy absence
is no better than a sty?

- [groaning]
- [shouting]

[sobbing]

[audience cheering]

- Mel, take this one.
- Hey, thanks.

Muriel came to me, she says
you're clockwise, I'm counterclockwise.

Means nothing to me.
No idea what she's talking about.

- No?
- No.

So I haven't done this since grade school,
but the basic premise is just over/under.

- That doesn't help me.
- Not helpful?

Okay, so on the over count,
you're gonna go over me. Right?

- Okay, like that?
- That. Then you'll go under her ribbon.

- Okay.
- Keep weaving your way through.

- Does that make sense?
- Sure.

- You'll be fine.
- [Muriel] Are we ready?

All right, here we go.

- Five, six, seven, eight.
- See you on the other side.

[Renaissance music playing]

Skip, Cameron!

Yup.

[Muriel] Slow down.

All right. Here we go.

- Skip, skip, skip. There you go.
- [Cameron] Skip, skip.

- [Muriel] There you go.
- Skip.

You did it. Good job.

Oh, thank you.

Don't you think
we're old for cotton candy?

It's not cotton candy, it's spun sugar.

What's the difference?

- The name on the sign.
- Uh-huh.

I can't believe
you've never had it before.

My parents never took me anywhere
when I was a kid.

That makes me sad.

It's no big deal.

- Hey, you...
- Hmm?

You got something.
Wait, don't move. Let me get it.

Mm.

- You taste like sugar.
- That's 'cause I'm sweet.

Oh.

[cell phone beeps]

- Who is it?
- It's Calvin.

What does he want?

- He wants to meet up.
- Okay. This is good.

This is your chance
to make him think you are all in.

I still got a little time.
What else you wanna do?

Um, I'd like to see baby goats.

I wanna take a picture
of the one wearing the pajamas.

No, please, no, it freaks me out
when people dress animals up in clothes.

- It's creepy.
- No, it keeps them warm.

I don't wanna go to the doctor.
I have the right not to go.

Sounds like he's more mad
about the lying than your not going.

Trust me, if I'd been honest with him,
it would have been a fight.

[Connie] So?

[Hope] So...

I don't have energy like I used to.

Sometimes I need
to take the path of least resistance.

- Have you told Doc how you feel?
- He knows. Or at least he should know.

Ever since Doc found out
that you were in the hospital,

he's been worried sick about you.

He thought he was gonna lose you
and he was devastated.

Still, that doesn't give him
the right to control me.

I think you're still angry with Doc
because he didn't tell you about Lilly.

And if that's the reason,

you should be mad at Lydie,
and Muriel, and Jo Ellen, and me,

because we all knew
and we didn't call you either,

because that's how Lilly wanted it.

- Why?
- Doesn't matter why.

You don't understand,

I didn't know
that the last time I saw Lilly would...

be the last time.

- I feel like I was robbed.
- You were. But that's not Doc's fault.

And if you don't stop blaming him,
your relationship won't survive.

[chattering]

- [Mel] Hey.
- Hey.

How was the maypole?

It was really fun.
I wish you'd been there.

Well, there's always next year.

How are you doing?

Oh, good. Good as gold.

Okay. Can I take you home now?

- You're not having a good time?
- I'm worried about you.

Being in a place that's loud and crowded
is really stressful.

I'm used to loud and crowded.
I own a bar, remember?

- Jack, come on.
- What?

What's going on?
What's going on in your head?

I mean, I know that seeing Tim
was really upsetting for you.

I was surprised to see him, sure.

And?

And what? I'm not sure
what else you want me to say.

I'm totally fine.

I can't tell
if you're lying to me or to yourself.

Jack, we need more mulled wine.

Mulled wine. Duty calls. [clears throat]

[scoffs]

[Julia] Nice.

You wanna try? Come on. You got this.

Okay, see, now the trick...

is not to be afraid to pull the string
all the way back to your face like this.

Whoo!

[Preacher laughing]

Come on, now, here you go.

So when you pull back, inhale,

and then exhale on the release.

- There you go.
- Good work.

- That's better. Okay. You wanna try again?
- Yeah.

This draws my very soul of counsel!

Stop my mouth.

Tickets are now being sold
for the knight's duel.

For saints have hands
that pilgrims' hands do touch.

And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss.

Have saints not lips,
and holy palmers too?

Ay, pilgrim,
lips that they must use in prayer.

O, then, dear saint,
let lips do what hands do;

they pray, grant thou,
lest faith turn to despair.

[audience cheering]

- You were so good.
- You were like the perfect Romeo.

For the record,
you're the one who kissed me.

It seemed like they wanted us to.

- Are you going to the knight's duel?
- Yeah.

Okay. I'll see you then.

- Hey, Jack.
- Hey.

- What's that smell?
- What?

Oh, you saw me feeding the baby goats.

Don't worry, I washed my hands.

I don't think any amount of scrubbing
will get rid of that.

Oh, come on.

- Can I just get an ale, please?
- Yes, yes, yes.

So Brady told me
you stopped by Emerald Lumber last night.

Yeah.

I did. Why? What did he say?

He said you were condescending.

How? All I did was ask him
if he remembered anything new

- from the night of the sh**ting.
- Could you just try to be nicer to him?

Nicer to him?
I've done everything for that guy.

I gave him a job. I put him up
when he had no place else to go.

And he goes and steals from me?

Then he works for Calvin?
That's messed up.

I get it. I'm not saying you're
in the wrong, but he's important to me.

And he's trying.

So I need for you guys
to at least be civil to one another.

A lot of history there.

I still don't trust him.

What is that?

Some kind of medieval marzipan.

You know I hate marzipan.

I tried to get you a bear claw,
but those are a th century invention.

Vernon?

I owe you an apology.

I've been a little difficult.

Okay, I've been very difficult.

And I've realized that I have
a lot of anger built up inside me.

Everything was going so well
between us, and then...

Lilly d*ed and some drunk idiot
screwed up the rest of me.

Sometimes life deals us a bad hand.

That doesn't mean it's okay
to take out your frustrations

- on the people who love you.
- I know.

And I know I haven't been fair to you.

My accident, Lilly's death,
they happened to you too.

The only way
we're gonna get through it all is...

UAW.

UAW.

Us Against the World.

It's been a long time
since I've heard you say that.

I want us to get back there.

To us being a team.

If you really believe that,
then we need to set some ground rules.

- It's not okay for you to lie.
- Agreed.

And you need
to take better care of yourself,

which includes
keeping up on all your appointments.

I'm going to be a model patient.

I will hold you to that.

Things will get better between us,
you'll see.

- Oh.
- Hi.

Hope, I need to talk to Mel for a minute.

- Can I catch up with you?
- Okay.

- Bye, Mel.
- Bye.

Um, what do you wanna talk to me about?

What is all this business
about the drug cabinet?

And Cameron's talking about some mystery?

It... It's my practice.

If something's going on,
I need to know about it.

You're right. You're right. Um...

[sighs]

I found Denny
in the drug cabinet last night.

He said he was looking for aspirin.

Denny? Why didn't you tell me
about that this morning?

I know, I should have.

I was going to,
and then Denny asked me not to,

and I know how excited you've been
to get to know him,

and I just don't wanna ruin that,

and I was really hoping that
either you or Cameron had left it open.

I appreciate
that you had my best interests at heart,

but it is not your job to manage me.

I know. I'm so sorry. I was really
just trying to do the right thing.

Well, it would have been helpful
if you had told me when it happened,

so when Hope invited Denny
to stay with us,

I could have stalled
until I got to the bottom of this.

I'm so sorry.

- We'll figure it out.
- Okay.

[Renaissance music playing]

[playing fanfare]

[crowd cheering]

At long last, the knight's duel.

[all cheering]

On one side, we have King John.

[all cheering]

He is your champion three years running.

And on the other side,
we have Sir Sheridan.

[audience booing]

And he uses guile and cunning to make up
for what he lacks in land and title.

[audience cheering]

En garde, Sheridan.

King John.

[Preacher laughs]

A flower.

- My lady.
- Me?

My ladies.

[shouting]

Ooh!

Oh, is this yours?

Why, thank you.

Away with you, you villainous toad.

Oh, so you need your squire
to fight your battles for you, do you?

[Preacher] Sheridan.

Come on.

You're a bad man!

Who's the toad now, boy?

I'm not scared.

Lonergan!

Just hang in there. Okay?

Everything's gonna be okay.
Just hang in there.

I'm not scared.

- There's nothing to be scared of, kid.
- [Ricky] Jack, that's not the line.

Jack, that's not your line.

Jack, what are you doing?

[audience booing]

[audience cheering]

[Preacher] Hey.

You okay?

When you went to see Lonergan's parents,
they ever ask why I didn't go that day?

Yeah.

What did you tell them?

That it was too much for you.

They never blamed you. Not for a second.

Neither did any of us guys
who were there that day.

Right.

I just wish
you could let yourself off the hook.

I don't know how.

That's okay.

Find someone who can help you.

You were an incredible Juliet.

Thanks.

You're super talented.
Did you do theater in high school or...?

- Um, no, that was my first time on-stage.
- Wow.

You've got, like, a spark.
You could totally be an actress.

Oh, I don't have the face for acting.

Are you being serious?

You're beautiful.

Denny, if you think I'm so pretty,

- then why aren't you interested?
- What?

Sometimes you act like you wanna be
with me and then you... You back off.

No, I am interested,
I just can't be with anyone right now.

Guys say that
when they don't wanna hurt your feelings.

No, I'm not doing that.

I like you.

For real.

Then why haven't you done
anything about it?

Because the timing's just not right.

- Then why are you here?
- I don't know.

I've tried,
but I can't stop thinking about you.

I feel like
I just rinsed off a pound of dirt.

You want anything?

Some water.

How was the maypole?

We already talked about
the maypole at the fair, remember?

That's right. I remember now.

- My lady.
- Thanks.

Jack, if you don't wanna talk to me
about whatever it is,

I think you should talk to a therapist.

You know, somebody that has experience.

Experience.

Experience with what?

Watching someone you're responsible for

bleeding out right in front of you,
that kind of thing?

I know
what happened over there was brutal.

So I want you to get help.

Jack, you're hurting.

I'm not, really. I'm...

I'm wallowing. That's what I'm doing.

I need to move on, so I don't think
talking about it is gonna help.

That's not healthy.

This?

You think I have a problem, is that it?

Look, it just takes the edge off.
That's all.

Jack, I'm not judging you.

Okay? I...

I love you.

- I just hate seeing you in pain.
- I love you too.

Tomorrow is gonna be better. I promise.

I'll be outside.

You're late. You said .

It's no fun waiting around
for something you need, is it?

Look, the only reason I'm here
is to let you know,

if you even so much as look at Brie,

the next body they pull out of the woods
will be yours.

Easy, cowboy.

No need to get uptight.

Hear me out.

That raid took a big bite
out of our profits.

It's time to refill the coffers.
