But all the crimes were all
committed between noon and 8:00.

You think someone's
setting them up?

I mean, how can you fall in love with
a woman you haven't even taken out?

It happens.

All right, come on,
let's get out of here!

Come on, man!

Vanessa, I'll always
be a street cop.

Well, maybe I just can't take
being married to a street cop.

I'm clear.

It's a setup!

Ponch? Hi, Ponch.

Nice girl.

I always thought I'd settle
down when I got to be your age.

When you get to be my
age, you'll probably have to.

I'm not gonna
lie to you, Officer,

I've had a few drinks.

I guess I got my
wallet here somewhere.

Are you all right?

Here it is.

Don't move.

LA-15-MARY-7, roll
ambulance and tow trucks.

And it was after a
little boy in my class

was critically injured
by a drunk driver

that I realized just how
serious the problem really is.

Now, that's when I
contacted Barbara Bloomberg,

who, uh, founded the Los
Angeles chapter of MADD,

which is Mothers
Against Drunk Drivers,

after her 16-year-old son
was k*lled by a drunk driver.

Barbara.

Every day, 1,780 innocent
Americans are crippled by drunk drivers.

Seventy are k*lled.

MADD is trying to change
the attitude in this country

that drunk driving is a socially
acceptable form of homicide.

And one of the ways
we're trying to succeed

is to qualify an
amendment which will enact

a nickel-a-drink tax to aid
the victims of drunk drivers.

And we have some petitions that
we're going to pass among you.

But, first, I'd like to thank the officers
from the California Highway Patrol

for their presentation.

It's our pleasure.

Uh, remember, folks, we're
not trying to spoil your fun.

But if you're gonna drink,
call a taxi, call a friend.

Just don't get behind
the wheel of your car.

Barbara and the children
will now pass out the petitions.

We really need
your help. Thank you.

I really enjoyed
listening to you talk.

You were terrific.

Oh, thank you.

You were pretty
terrific yourself.

I feel terrible.

What's wrong?

I want us to keep talking,
but I don't know what to say.

Vanessa, would you get
some more petitions, please?

Uh, excuse me.

Vanessa.

Vanessa, I want to talk to you.

It's no use, Fred, it's over.

You don't mean that,
honey. It's not over for me.

It can't be over for you.

- Look, please, just leave me alone.
- Honey...

Having a problem, miss?

Uh, no problem, Officer. We're
old friends, aren't we, honey?

I want you to leave
me alone, Fred.

You heard the lady.

She's asking you politely.
Now, I'm asking you politely.

You don't tell me what
to do. I tell you what to do.

I pay your salary.

I ought to take down your
number and report it to...

Look, Fred, why
don't you just leave?

You know, the street's
no place to settle this.

If you want to file a complaint,
do it at headquarters, okay?

This isn't the end, baby.

Thank you, you just
rescued a lady in distress.

My pleasure.

Have a nice evening.

Thanks again.

Wait a minute. You just
can't drive out of my life.

I mean, I think we should have
dinner together sometime, huh?

What do you say?

Give me a rain check, okay?

You'll let me know when
the sun comes out, huh?

I promise.

Wait a minute, you
don't have my number!

What's with you?

This is it, Bobby.

This is what?

I'm going to marry that girl.

Uh-huh. Tell me
about it in two weeks.

- That's her.
- Let's take her.

Oh!

Oh! What are you doing?

Oh, no!

Oh! Stop!

Oh, don't hurt me, please!

I'll give you anything you want.

You bet you will, sister.

Bingo.

Any units in position? 1 1-8
3, Coldwater and Cherokee.

Did you get the license
number of the truck, ma'am?

- What?
- The license number.

Did you get the license
number of the truck?

Oh. No.

Oh! No, it happened...
It happened too fast.

Okay, just don't
try to move, please.

What kind of animals
would pull a job like this?

Cops see a lot
of cruelty, Bobby.

I want you to take your seats.

Hey, the dude's
giving away balloons.

Ooh!

- Here you are.
- I want one.

There. There.

One for you, and you and you.

And here. Here.

Well, hello. I didn't
expect to see you so soon.

It's been two days.
That's already too long.

You her boyfriend?

Not yet. But I want you to put
in a good word for me, okay?

- Sure.
- All right.

And one for the teacher.

I want you to be able to get a
hold of me when it stops raining.

Ponch, it's awfully
sweet of you.

But I'm not ready yet.

You're getting good, Grossie.

Thanks, I'd better be,
I paid for 25 lessons.

Okay, here's some photos of trucks that
come close to the victim's descriptions.

Come on, Grossie,
knock it off, huh?

Bruce, could you
get me a refill?

Listen, big brother, this blue
uniform doesn't make me the butler.

Grossie, come on!

Say, by the size of these tread
marks, this has to be the one.

Why is it that when a cadet
gets a little on-the-job training,

he automatically
becomes a detective?

Well, it's a little different than
when you two went through.

Now they require us to
have a little intelligence.

Whoa!

We're gonna check this area
out first thing in the morning.

Okay, tiger.

Hey, if you guys really like
hanging out around here after work,

I can always assign
you a double shift.

On our way home, Sarge.

Uh, Bruce, would you clean up
this mess before you leave, please?

Oh! Ah...

And get me a cup of
coffee, cream, no sugar.

Coming up, Sarge.

Kathy, you got a minute?

Sure.

I need a little female advice.

I met this girl that
I'm crazy about,

but I can't get to
first base with her.

- Do you really like this girl, Ponch?
- Mmm-hmm.

Or is she just another notch in
Frank Poncherello's phone book?

All right, I deserve that, I
know. I'm telling you, this time,

this is real.

You mean you're
genuinely getting ready

to make a serious
commitment to one woman?

Mmm-hmm. I can't
believe it myself.

I mean, how can you fall in love with
a woman you haven't even taken out?

It happens.

But, you know, Ponch, special
women deserve special attention.

There are even a few
of us old-fashioned girls

that like to be courted.

Courted?

Oh, thank you.

Grossie.

What?

I think you're terrific.

Thanks.

Here she comes.

This is crazy.

You mean, you're not worth it?

Okay.

You guys wanna move away
from that ladder and come over here

with your hands on your head.

You'd be worth
going to jail for.

I'd visit you every day.

- Would you bake me a cake?
- With a file in it.

You guys are cops?

Yes, sir, and that's
my training officer.

Don't ask me, I'm
only in the academy.

What do I know.
I'm the guitar player.

What do you say?

How can I say no to a
man who'd risk jail for me?

You mean, it's not
raining anymore?

I think the sun came
out the minute I met you.

I just didn't see it.

- Good morning, Arthur.
- Good morning.

Prestige Answering
Service, Sandy speaking.

Sandy, this is
Mr. Parker. Hello.

I've got to get to the bank.

If my lawyer calls, will you
transfer his call to City Bank?

Sure will, Mr. Parker.
And have a nice day.

Uh, thank you.

Hyena, come in,
this is the Parrot.

I have a job for you.

Cars are pulling over.
They think you're a siren.

Eat your heart out, man.

Any unit in the vicinity?

Possible hit and run,
Benedict and Clear View.

The money's here.

Are you all right?

So far they've concentrated on
Benedict, Coldwater and Beverly Dr.

Yeah, and all the victims had
something valuable in their cars.

Hey, Sarge, they stole
that license off another truck.

Thanks, Webster.

Sarge, if they're coming
down the freeway,

we can intercept them at
Mulholland and Coldwater.

We don't have enough
information for a stakeout yet.

Meanwhile, a lot of innocent
people are being ripped off.

Look, I don't like it any
more than you do, Nelson,

but I can't commit that kind of
manpower without more information.

Okay, that's it.

I'll bet you $5 that he'll
offer to break the date.

You're on.

Hey, Ponch.

I got an extra ticket to
the Raider game tonight.

You wanna go?

Thanks, Bruce,

but I wouldn't break my date
for box seats at the Super Bowl.

Man, is he in trouble.

Hi!

You didn't give me a chance
to come up and get you.

I was ready. Do I look okay?

Look okay? You look
great, you kidding? Come on.

Where are we going?

I'm gonna take you
on a wonderful ride.

I am so happy.

Do you like it?

It's the best present
I've ever had.

Hey, that's half a week's pay.

But this way, our love will
be forever, like the ocean.

We do love one
another, don't we?

Forever.

Oh, no. No, no, no.

You wear yours so
that every time I see you,

I'll remember this moment.

I'm in love with a cuckoo bird.

"The birthday of my life Is
come, my love is come to me"

Oh, no, don't burn it.

You're breaking my heart.

The thickest black book
in California, up in smoke!

Hey, I'll always
have the memories.

It's like watching
a Picasso burn.

Right.

Hey, you didn't have to burn it.
You could have given it to me.

Or me. I'm your partner.

I'm sorry, fellows, but I wouldn't
ask them to lower their standards.

Oh, Ponch, I just hate to
see you get out of circulation.

Sorry, but you're looking at
a new man. A mature man.

One who is ready for commitment.

That's what I think. You
ought to be "committed."

Ponch, I think it's wonderful.

You really ready
to give it all up?

Yeah, I know it's tough.

But as much as I love the chase,
getting caught is even better.

- All right, all right.
- Hey, congratulations.

Oh, I think I'm a little early.

Hey, it's the balloon man.

What you got for us today?

We were gonna break in a
couple of minutes anyhow.

Well, in that case, what are my
bids for an extra ham sandwich, huh?

Meat and green vegetables, yuck.

"Yuck" on chocolate
cake, too? Huh?

You should keep him around.

I'm gonna do my best.

You can only eat that
after school though.

So, when are you
two gonna get married?

Hey, that's my line, kid.

Can I be a flower girl?

I was a flower
girl for my sister.

I'll bring a present.

It would be a shame to
disappoint the children.

- Don't disappoint us.
- Don't disappoint us.

Well, what do you say?

What can I say?

I think it's a wonderful idea.

How do you feel about dogs?

att*ck or otherwise?

My new apartment manager
says we can have pets.

I've always wanted a dog.

- You never had one?
- Mmm-mmm.

Well, look who's here.

Vanessa and the
dancing policeman.

Can I cut in?

No, thank you, Fred.

The lady doesn't
want to dance with you.

What's going on, Vanessa?

You into experiencing cops now?

Don't, Ponch.

Come on, let's go.

He's drunk. He doesn't
mean anything to us.

I'll be around, baby, if the
little piggy begins to bore.

Getraer told us not
to stake out this area.

We're not on a stakeout,
we're just patrolling.

You taught me that, partner.

Why am I following
a probie around?

Look at that truck.

Ponch, that black truck up ahead
fits the description of the robbers.

Let's take 'em.

Hold on, okay?

Let's get some assistance
up here in case they ram it.

We'll try to stay
back here and hide.

LA-15-MARY-6 and 7.

All units, MARY-6 and 7 are
trailing possible 21 1 suspects

southbound on Coldwater to
Melrose, requesting assistance.

15-ADAM-9 is responding.

Hey, I think they're following
us, I'm gonna try and lose 'em.

Call for an ambulance and
paramedics, get 'em rolling!

Webster. Webster!

I'm okay, get me out of here.

Hurry, Bobby!

LA-15-MARY-7, roll 11-41 and
42 to Coldwater and Melrose.

CHP involved in an 11-80.

And now, for a traffic
and weather update.

The big smashup that
had Coldwater blocked

and injured a CHP
officer has been cleared.

But Caltrans informs us that it
will be several hours before...

Hey, Bobby, Ponch.

Yeah.

I pulled all the
connecting crime reports.

And all the att*cks took place within
a few blocks of the victims' homes.

Could've been a coincidence.

Maybe, but all the crimes were
committed between noon and 8:00.

You think someone's
setting them up?

Someone on an eight-hour shift?

Let's get all the paperwork done,
then we'll go talk to the victims.

They may have more in
common than they know.

That's dangerous. You're
starting to think like me.

- Frank!
- Vanessa.

- Are you all right?
- What are you doing here?

I heard on the radio that
a CHP officer was injured.

Oh, come on, honey, there
are hundreds of CHP officers.

You can't come down here every
time you hear one of us is hurt.

Oh, no? Well, from now on,
you'd better have them announce

that Officer Frank
Poncherello is safe and sound.

What can I say, she loves me.

Come on, I'll walk
you to your car.

Hey, Kathy, I want you
to meet Vanessa James,

soon to be Vanessa
Poncherello. Kathy Linahan.

- Nice to meet you.
- Nice meeting you.

He's been singing your praises.

Vanessa came down here to see
that I didn't hurt myself at work today.

I don't blame her.

I'll make sure he drives
carefully, at least till the wedding.

I'd appreciate it.

He's really got me worried.

I can imagine. Well,
nice meeting you.

Nice meeting you.

Do you ever dream
of getting a desk job?

Sure, in my nightmares.

No, I'm serious.

Hey, me, too.

If I told you how scared I was
when I heard that radio report...

Hey, come on, honey, I wasn't
wearing a suit when you met me.

Yeah, but that was then.

Hey, aren't you the girl that wanted
to have all kinds of experiences, huh?

Ponch, I've waited a
long time to fall in love.

I couldn't take losing you.

I'm a cop.

Vanessa, I'll always
be a street cop.

Well, maybe I just can't take
being married to a street cop.

Go easy on her.

She only worries
because she loves you.

Ponch.

You ready? You still want to
interview those victims, don't you?

Are you sure you gentlemen
won't have some coffee?

- No, thank you, Mr. Parker.
- All right, Arthur.

Now, do I understand you correctly?
You don't know any of the other victims?

Mrs. Marks, Mrs.
Montefiori, Mr. Wyndom?

No, but then Mrs. Parker and
I don't mix socially very much.

Oh. Go on, the answering
service will pick that up.

Can you think of anything that you and
the other victims might have in common?

Nothing. I wish I could.

Oh, excuse me, this
might be important.

Hello.

Sandy, I said I
wasn't taking any calls.

The president of City Bank?

Oh, yes, put him
through, thanks.

We just cracked the case!

Now, wait a minute.
All we know for sure is

the victims use the
same answering service.

But this Sandy knows when
all the victims leave their house.

Hey, we still gotta prove a connection
between her and the guys in the truck.

Yeah.

Puppies for sale!

Anyone wanna buy a puppy?

Real puppies from outer space.

Anyone wanna... Anyone
wanna buy a puppy?

Hey, son! Come over here.

Watch yourself crossing
the street. Come on.

- How much?
- $5.

$5 for a space puppy?

$4?

Now it's $4?

You could have him for free.

My dad says he'll drown them.

Oh, no.

I think $5 is a very fair price.

- You do?
- Absolutely. Here you are.

There.

Give me the pup.

Oh, boy.

Thank you.

Wait a minute. I gotta
tell you something.

He really isn't
from outer space.

No kidding, you
could have fooled me.

A puppy on a motorcycle.

Getraer's gonna love it.

Hey, Vanessa lives
just around the corner.

I'll just drop it by.

I'll wait here.

Okay.

Ponch.

Wait a minute, it's
not what you think.

Thanks again.

Once we get the signal that
the guys in the truck have hit,

everyone has got to move
quickly. I don't want any mistakes.

Questions?

Linahan.

Hi, Vanessa.

He's right here. Ponch.

It's Vanessa.

Tell her I just left.

All right, let's do it.

Hyena, this is the Parrot.
Hyena, this is the Parrot.

The Pigeon is
getting ready to fly.

Roger, Parrot. We got her.

They're behind me.

Make sure you're clear. I don't
want anything to happen to you.

Thanks, Sergeant, I
didn't know you cared.

I'm clear.

All right, move out.

It's a setup!

Sandy, it's a trap! It's a trap!

All right, Bruce, you
stay with the bikes.

Hey, I'll take that.

All right.

Help me.

- It's my arm.
- All right, I got you.

All right, take it
easy, come on.

Come on, Bobby, pull him
out! The t*nk's gonna rupture.

Pull him out, come on.

- Make it quick. Come on, partner, move it.
- Come on, man, let's get out of here.

Get him. Come on, hurry up!

We risked our lives
for those creeps?

That's what cops do, Bobby.

I've got a message from Vanessa.

Hey, Ponch, listen.

Hey, I asked you two
not to do this, okay?

She says this guy, Fred, showed up
when she just came in from the pool.

She was getting dressed
when you got there.

What kind of chump would
believe a story like that?

A chump who loves a woman.

Talk to her, Ponch. The least
you can do is hear her side.

I saw her side.

Ponch,

I just want you to know I'm
staying out of the Vanessa thing.

Thanks.

Hey, will you tell that lady
she just broke the law?

You tell her. I'm
out of it, remember?

Frank Poncherello, you
treat me worse than a criminal.

At least a criminal
gets his rights.

- You got the right to remain silent.
- Waived.

- You got the right to an attorney.
- Don't want one.

Anything you say may
be used against you.

I love you, you big dummy.

Fred means nothing to me.
It's you, and nobody else.

Forever.

Hey, Mom, look what
the policeman's doing.

Hey! What's this,
search and seizure?

A rumor has come to my attention

that the incident on Santa
Monica Blvd. yesterday

was due to the unprofessional
conduct of one of my officers.

Oh, Sarge, he was just
holding her until help arrived.

She was too tough
for me to handle.

Well, the Captain is very
unhappy about the incident.

He's recommending suspension.

You have anything to say for
yourself, Officer Poncherello?

Sarge, I say you're
invited to the wedding.

You're all invited
to the wedding!

Yeah! All right!

Hold it, hold it!

We're giving a picnic for
them in the park on Sunday,

and you're all invited.

When you meet my father,

don't let it throw you if he doesn't think
you're good enough for his only daughter.

Prince Charles wouldn't
have been good enough.

Hey, I can understand
that perfectly.

No bozo better
mess with my little girl.

Listen, when do you want
to start having babies?

On our honeymoon?

How about four?

Six.

Six?

Two girls, two boys
and two puppies.

You know, my mother's
bringing her satin wedding gown.

I've always wanted
to be married in it.

Oh, that reminds me.

My grandmother's wedding ring.

Oh, it's beautiful.

It fits perfectly.

Now, just don't throw
it into the ocean, okay?

I didn't know I
could be so happy.

I love you so much.

Hey, fella! Come here!

I'll get him.

You're a bad little
boy, don't you know

you're not supposed to
run out in the street like that?

Vanessa!

What's the matter,
somebody get hurt?

My puppy, is he all right?

It's okay, he's
just fine, just fine.

Just don't move, okay?

We're gonna have a beautiful
wedding, aren't we, Ponch?

Yeah, of course we are.

Where's the ambulance?

It's on its way, Ponch.

What about the honeymoon?

You didn't tell me
where we're going.

Any place you wanna
go. How about Capri?

We'll have babies.

We'll have lots of babies.

And animals.

And noise.

And we'll live happily
ever after, won't we?

Tell me.

Yes, yes.

We're gonna live
happily ever after.

We're gonna have lots of babies.

Vanessa?

Vanessa.

Every day, 1,78 0 Americans
are crippled by drunk drivers.

Seventy die. Please
drive carefully.
