[ Sister ]: baby wild things
make good pets for a while

But in time must be
let go with a smile.

Heh-heh-heh!

Yay!

Ready for my "over the shoulder
twister," sister?

Hey... What?

Oops, looks like my
"over the shoulder twister"

Needs a little practicing.

Maybe some practice chasing
the ball would help too.

But you're closer.

[ Sighing ]

Okay.

[ Gasping ]
what is it,
sister?

It looks like a little mouse.

That's not a mouse,
that's a chipmunk.

Right, papa?

Hmm. Right, brother.

And a baby one, too,
it looks brand new.

His eyes are
barely open.

[ Sister ]:
a little baby!

Oh! It's so cute.

And so teeny.

No, sister, you shouldn't
touch him.

But I want to take
him into the house.

Chipmunks belong outdoors,
not in a house.

But it's just a baby, papa.

All the more reason
to leave him outside.

He belongs with his mama.

We better move away
so she can find her baby.

Okay...

Bye-bye, baby chipmunk.

Come on, sister!

[ Mama ] :
so there you are.

I thought you two
were playing catch.

I'm playing
catch...by myself.

Sister's busy
babysitting.

The mama chipmunk hasn't
come back for her baby yet.

Oh, dear.

Maybe his mama
isn't coming back.

Maybe something happened.

And now her poor baby
is all by himself.

It's going to be dark soon.

So can we take
him inside, then?

Now, sister, remember what I
said: chipmunks belong outside.

I know, but he's just
a little baby.

[ Thunder rumbling ]

Well, it does look like rain.

[ Sighing ]

Okay, but only because
it's going to rain.

Yay!

And only
for tonight.

We'll keep an eye out
for his mama.

He's so cute.

[ Brother ]:
heh! I bet
he's hungry.

Mama, what do baby
chipmunks eat?

Like most babies,
milk from their mamas.

But since we don't have
a mama chipmunk,

We're going to have
to improvise.

Hmm...

Sister, you run upstairs

And get one of your doll's
baby bottles.

And brother,

You find something for
the chipmunk to sleep in.

And I'll fix him a little
something to eat.

How does a little warm milk
and honey sound?

[ Papa ]:
delicious!

But I thought we were having
maple-cured salmon tonight.

[ Chuckling ]
it's for the chipmunk, silly.

Oh. Well, in that case,
milk and honey sounds fine.

Got it!

Here it is!

Not too hot and not too cold.

Look! He opened his eyes!

Let's call him...
Chip-zilla!

I think I'm going
to name him brown-eyes.

Hmm...

Wow, look at him go!

[ Sister chuckling ]

He's so cute.

[ Mama ]:
are you finished
chopping the wood?

All done!

Oh, either that wood's
getting harder,

Or I'm getting softer.

[ Mama ]:
and did you put
some more nuts out

For our mama
chipmunk?

Mm-hm. But I still don't
see any sign of her.

[ Door opening ]

I'm home!

All brown-eyes does
is eat and sleep.

[ Mama ] :
well, that's what babies do.

When they're not eating
and sleeping...

They're sleeping and eating.

Exactly.

Babies and papas.

[ Papa ]:
hey! I heard that.

[ Sister ]:
I love you, brown-eyes.

Clementine, I'd like you
to meet my baby.

Brown-eyes,
this is my doll, clementine.

No, no! Don't eat
clementine, brown-eyes!

Brown-eyes has been
eating so much!

I hope we don't run out
of milk and honey.

[ Gasping ]
it's empty!

There's more milk
in the fridge, sis.

Not the bottle, the box!

It's empty! He's gone!

Well, he must be somewhere.

Which means
he could be anywhere.

We've got to find him!

Not here.

Not here.

Not here.

[ Sister ]:
this is the only place
we haven't looked.

Mama! Papa!

We can't find brown-eyes
anywhere!

Well then,

Maybe he found
his way outside.

It's where he
belongs, you know.

But who's going to feed him?

He doesn't have a mama
to take care of him!

He's not a baby
any more, sister.

[ Sister ]:
but he was happy here with me.

He wouldn't leave me.

Ahh!

Ha-ha! Whoa!
Chip-zilla returns!

Brown-eyes!

Oh, I'm so happy I found you!

I promise I'll never
lose you again!

I'm going to keep you safe
and love you forever.

You see, this is exactly
the kind of chipmunk behaviour

That belongs outside,
not in the house.

Don't worry, papa.

I'll make sure he stays
out of trouble from now on.

[ Gasping ]
I promise.

You think you can manage that?

I know we can.

All right, then.

Yay!

It looks like your chipmunk
has grown out of baby food.

And too much sugar
isn't good for anyone.

Maybe you can find some acorns
or something for him to eat.

I'll get 'em!
I'll go
with you!

Hmm...

Hey!

Hey.

Huh?

Hmm...

Ahhh!

Oh, no!

Yow! Oh!

[ Mama ]:
oh, dear!

Are you all right?

I-i'm ok.

Oh.

Brother, how would you like
to help me fix up a snack?

Honey apples?
[ Mama ]:
uh-huh.

Papa, brown-eyes didn't mean to
hurt you. He was scared and--

I know, I know,
but didn't I say...

[ Sighing ]

You know, I'd say your chipmunk
isn't a baby any more.

Papa, I promise he won't
make any more trouble.

Are you sure you can keep
that promise this time?

No.

Do you think your chipmunk
is happy here in the house?

I try to keep him in his box,

But I don't know if he likes it
there any more.

Well, where do you think
he would like to be?

Where he can run around

And make a mess
and chew things up.

[ Sighing ]

Outside.

But I love brown-eyes, papa.

I don't want to let him go.

We all love him, sister.

That's why we need to do
what's best for him.

You really think

He'll be happier
outside?

Uh-huh. Where he can run around,

Play in the trees
and gather nuts.

So do i.

I'm going to miss
brown-eyes a lot.

Bye, brown-eyes.

Well, I'd say that
is one happy chipmunk.

Wow! Did you see him go?

Look, brown-eyes found his mama!

And his brother and sister.

Looks like you won't have to say
goodbye to brown-eyes after all.

Brown-eyes and I

Are going to be
neighbours!

[ Blowing kiss ]

See you tomorrow, brown-eyes.

[ Sister ]: to make a wish upon
a star is okay for a start,

But if you want it to come true

You may have to do your part.

Look, the toy store!

They have a great
miniature rocket

For my solar system project.

Aw, it's not miniature enough.

It'll dwarf all my planets.

Look at that
great teddy bear.

It's so cute
with those pink ribbons.

Her birthday
is coming up soon, papa.

We haven't decided
on a present yet.

I think we have a winner.

[ Tinkling ]

I don't remember baking a planet
souffle for dinner.

[ Brother ]:
planet! Where?

Heh-heh, that's my saturn, mama.

It, uh, must've gotten
pulled out of orbit.

Ah, solar-system
models.

I remember making one
when I was a cub.

How does it go again?

Mercury, venus,

Earth, mars, jupiter,
saturn, uranus,

Neptune and...

Pluto!

Nicely done, papa.

Whoa!

Scratching your chin, huh?

That means it's either
really itchy,

Or you're studying really hard
for that math test.

I want to do better
than that "c"

I got on my last
report card, papa.

I could help you study
if you like,

Bounce some questions off you.

Bounce away.

Ok, what's four times six?

Four times six equals...

Um... ?

No, wait.

.

Four times six equals .

Well done, sister!

And you took your time
and thought it through.

Good night, cubs. Sleep tight.

Good night, mama.

Oh, look.

The wishing star is out tonight.

The wishing star? What's that?

They say the first star you see
at night you can make a wish on.

That's why it's called
the wishing star.

Star light, star bright,
first star I see tonight.

I wish I may, I wish I might
have the wish I wish tonight.

Then what happens?

Well, if you wish hard enough

And you don't tell
anybody your wish,

It just might come true.

Sweet dreams.

Brother, are you awake?

Yes...

[ Sister ]:
that rhyme
mama said,

What would happen if I said it?

Should I try it?

[ Snoring ]

I think so too.

Star light, star bright,
first star I see tonight.

I wish I may, I wish I might
have the wish I wish tonight.

Um, I wish for...

That pretty teddy bear
in the toy-store window.

Please and thank you,
wishing star.

Mmm.

Freeze that finger, mister!

No cake until your sister
opens her last present.

Wow!

It's a big one!

The teddy bear
from the toy store!

I wished for this
on the wishing star.

My wish came true!

Happy birthday, sister.

[ Brother and papa ]:
happy birthday, sister!

Next question:
what is eight times six?

.

Yup. Um...

What's divided by three?

Seven.

Nice work, honey.

All those questions,
and you only missed one.

And you've gotten faster.

You'll do just fine
on your math test.

Thanks, papa.

[ Sighing ]

[ Papa ]: you'll do just fine
on your math test.

Piece of cake.

I'll find out friday
when I get my mark.

I sure hope papa's right.

That would really be
a wish come true.

The wishing star!

Star light, star bright,
first star i...

Uh-oh.

...don't see tonight.

I'll have to wait until
tomorrow, I guess.

Oh, no!

No stars again tonight.

Brother,

What are
you doing?

Hanging my solar-system mobile.

I just got it back
from teacher bob.

With a merit sticker attached
for all the extra work

I did on it.

How did you do
on your math test?

I don't know yet.

Teacher jane's giving us
our marks tomorrow.

Do you, um... Think you could
hang that somewhere else

Besides the window?

It's blocking my view.

I can't see if
the wishing star is out,

And I want to thank it for
granting my teddy bear wish.

[ Brother ]:
thank it?

And that's all you want to do?

Okay,

I want to make
another wish too.

To get an "a," or even a "b+"
on my math test.

And tonight's the only night
I can make that wish.

Please?

You owe me.

Thanks.

It's there, and not
a night too soon.

Star light, star bright,
first star I see tonight.

I wish I may, I wish I might
have the wish I wish tonight.

Thanks for granting my
teddy bear wish, wishing star.

Now about my math test
tomorrow...

I appreciate you making
extra crates for me

On such short notice, papa.

Anything for you,
farmer ben.

Oh, ho, ho! You weren't kidding

When you said you had a bumper
crop of peas this year.

I never kid
about crops.

No siree-bob!

Mind you, there is a drawback
to having such a bounty.

It's going to take me days

To get all these peas
picked and packed.

[ Groaning ]

And even longer to get
my sore back unsore.

Papa, papa, guess what?

I got a "b+" on my math test!

That's wonderful!

[ Horse neighing ]

Sister, meet my old horse,
princess.

Hello, princess.

As soon as we're done
unloading these, honey,

We'll head home for dinner.

Take your time, papa.

Aren't you a friendly horse?

And pretty, too.

[ Neighing ]

Star light, star bright,
first star I see tonight.

I wish I may, I wish I might

Have the wish I wish tonight.

Hello, wishing star,
it's me again.

I wish with all my heart
for my very own horse

That I can ride anytime I want,
please and thank you.

I know it's a lot to wish for,

But I'm wishing really,
really hard for this one.

Really hard.

Hmm, no horse here.

Maybe it's in the backyard.

No horse anywhere.

[ Sighing ]

Sweetie,
what's wrong?

The wishing star
let me down, papa.

It didn't make my wish
come true like it did

For my teddy bear
and my math grade.

What wish didn't
come true?

I wished for a real,
live horse, all my own.

I guess I didn't
wish hard enough.

Well, maybe the wishing star's
just too busy.

Maybe. It must get thousands
of wishes every night.

It probably doesn't have time
to grant all of them.

There are other ways of making
wishes come true, you know.

Take your teddy bear,
for example.

You've been so helpful
the last while,

Doing your chores,

Helping us with ours
without even being asked.

Mama and I would've gotten you
the teddy bear for your birthday

Whether you wished
on the star or not.

Really?
Really.

And all that studying you did
for your math test

Was bound to improve your grade.

Even if I hadn't wished
for that either?

You earned
those things,

You made those
wishes come true.

There really are other ways
to make wishes come true.

Maybe I don't need
the wishing star at all.

Maybe not.

I'm going to take care
of my third wish myself!

I'll tell you, ben,

I almost ran out of wood making
this second batch of crates.

Well, picking's been
going faster

Now that I've gotten
some good help.

Sister showed a lot of gumption,
offering to pick peas for me

In exchange for letting her ride
princess whenever she wanted.

Now that princess
is out to pasture,

She's happy to have
sister's company.

She'll be the only one allowed
to ride the old horse.

And she really deserves it.

[ Neighing ]

You were right, papa.

There are other ways of making
your wishes come true!

It's pretty amazing how hard
work and determination

Can magically give you
what you deserve.
