They're small with big eyes
and sharp claws.

Maybe you should leave
keeping the lookout to us.

Well, we could always use
some extra help digging.

Digging? Well I'm just
the best digger ever!

Some digging helpers for you!

[laughs]

A burrow's like a little
tunnel where we all sleep.

under the ground.

Why do we need to
dig more holes?

We like to have many ways
in and out, just in case

we need to leave the
burrow in a hurry.

- He's a great digger!

If we had paws like

we could dig
a hole in no time.

check on things.

[Happy noises]

guys are so cute.

with the pups.

up in our tree house, Nick.

These leaves are as
comfy as a couch.

I just LOVE leaves.

They're all
the same shape!

Oh, that's because there's
only one kind of tree

in the yard.

I wish we had some
different shaped leaves.

Well, I was in Kaloo-kalee
just last week, and

I saw some very different
leaves there.

That's just what we need!

the most amazing leaves!

We're going down!



Wow!

I've never seen
leaves that big!

What kind of tree IS this?

A raphia palm tree.

It has the longest
leaves in the world!

[giggles] Look, they're
taller than me!

I've seen them grow longer
than two school buses,

back to back!

That's HUGE!

But how can we use them
in our leaf-picture?

We don't even have
paper that big.

Maybe we could just pick
off some little parts

of the leaf?

Oh my, Nick -
please don't pick!

The tree needs those!

It needs them?
Why?

What are leaves
for, anyway?

Photo-synthesis!

Photo what?

Photosynthesis.

It's how trees
make their food!

When the sun shines
on the leaves,

the tree uses the
energy from the sun

to make food,
so it can grow!

Trees need food?
Just like us?

Absolutely!

All living things need
a little snack-a-roo

sometimes, to grow
big and strong.

Oh, then I guess we'd
better not pick any leaves

that are still
on the tree.

This one's fallen off.

It's a bit dry,

but I guess the tree
isn't using it anymore.

And here's one that broke
off the tree,

but it's still fresh!

Oh,
perfect!

We can carry these
leaves in my Hat.

They're even long enough
to make his tail!

It smells like
Christmas here.

That's because these are
all Christmas trees!

They're also
called evergreens.

This is Douglas.

He's a Douglas Fir.

[laugh] Pleased to

Don't mind his
prickly personality.

Just look at his
lovely leaves!

What leaves?

All I see are these green
needle-shaped things.

I don't think evergreen
trees HAVE leaves.

If trees need leaves to
help them make food,

then evergreens must
have leaves.

Hmm. Maybe the needles
are leaves?

Ding!
Right answer.

But if they are leaves,
then why aren't they

changing colour like
the leaves in my yard?

Well, they are called
evergreen trees...

Ever...
green?

You mean the leaves
always stay green,

and never change colour?

[giggle] That's
right...until they

fall off and dry out..
like these ones.

They're ever green!

And you are ever clever!

[giggles]

Hey, let's take some
needles for our

leaf-picture of Cat.

I know just what part
to use them for...

Cat's whiskers!

Who wants to see one
more bee-yoo-tiful leaf?

[laugh]

ginkgo tree...

[giggles]
- Oh dear.

That's not it!

I'll give you a hint.

I've got it! Duck feet!

Ginkgo leaves look
like duck feet!

Right!

Yay,
Fish!

[happy quacks]

Told you I was
a good guesser.

And they look like
your bow tie Cat.

They're perfect!

Isn't this fun?

I can't wait to use them
in our leaf-picture.

The leaves of a tree come
in all shapes and sizes

From tiny to tall, they
are full of surprises!

But no matter how different,
there's one thing we know

They all gather sunlight
to help the tree grow!

Ready!

Oh, my - it's like
looking in a mirror!

Uncanny!

[sigh]
It is very nice.

Fish!

[gasp] For me?
It's beautiful!
