Hey, is this thing on?
[Sid chuckles]
* hey, sid, what do you say?
What do you want to learn today?
* I want to know why things
happen and how
And I want to know everything
now, oh, yeah!
How does this thing work?
Why does that stuff change?
How does that do
what it just did? Hmm
What's up with the sky?
You think I could fly?
The world is spinning
and I want to know why
I got a lot of questions
and big ideas
I'm sid the science kid *
[captioning made possible by
The jim henson company
and friends of nci]
Hmm. Wow, sid, that banana
looks delicious. Ah. Mmm. Why,
Yes, dr. Beaks, it is quite
delicious, thank you. Bye-bye.
[Sid chuckles]
hmm. But you know, I had
Oatmeal for breakfast, and
that tasted yummy, too. But it
Tasted different than this
banana, but it was still yummy.
Hey, wait a minute. How did I
taste the difference between
This banana and the oatmeal?
Come on, sid, it's time for
school.
Ooh. Hey, mom, I have a
question. How did my mouth know
That bananas taste different
than oatmeal?
Good question, sid. It's
your sense of taste.
Oh.
Your mouth knows the
difference between lots of
Tastes. Cheese, chocolate,
chicken--you name it, you can
Taste it.
Hmm, wow. So, it's my sense
of taste? Um--do I have any
Other senses?
You sure do. You have
senses.
Wow. Huh. Wow--i'm going to
investigate this more at school.
Good idea. Come on, let's
go, sweetie.
I just got to know--what are
all my senses?
[Echoes]
hoo-hoo! Time for school! Yay!
* I love my mom--
uh-huh--
My mom is cool
uh-huh--
But now it's time
for having fun at school
Yeah!
[Sid's mother laughs]
hi!
* I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you
There's gabriella
watch what I can do
Aha! Yeah!
Ready, set, go!
Wow!
I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you
Hey, there's gerald
yeah!
Check out my moves
I'm a rock star!
Yeah! Awesome!
Cool!
Go!
I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you
Hey, there's mae
may I show you how I groove?
Uh-huh
whee!
Uh-huh!
Groovy!
We're looking for our friends
we're looking for you
Hey, there's sid! *
Did you hear the one about
The kid who wanted to know
everything about everything?
That's you!
You got me.
[Laughter]
* we're looking for our
Friends
and look what we found
We found each other!
Friends! *
[Laughter]
Awesome! You like what I do?
Yeah.
Simon says kick your right
foot.
Ok.
Simon says nod your head.
Mm-hmm.
Simon says--oh, hi, sid.
Oh, hi, sid.
No. Sid's right there.
What?
Hi, guys.
Ok! Hi, sid.
So, simon says I have a
question. Do you ever think
About how stuff tastes
different? Like how a cheese
Sandwich tastes different than
an apple?
Yeah! Yeah, they do taste
different. And they both taste
Good. Now I'm hungry.
Oh, me, too. Hey, I also
like the taste of strawberry
Yogurt.
I like the taste of apple
pie.
Oh, me, too.
Yummy!
Hi, kids. It's a special
day. We're having class
Outside! Come on.
Yay!
Yay!
Go outside. Come on, let's
go. This way.
That's teacher susie.
Susie--
hmm?
Susie, we were talking about
things that are yummy.
Yeah, things that taste
yummy. Like apple pie.
Oh, what a fun conversation.
You were talking about your
sense of taste.
Yeah. My mom told me all
about my sense of taste. And
She also said that we have a
bunch of other senses.
Oh, I know another sense.
[Mae sniffs]
ah, our sense of smell.
[Mae giggles]
smell, right.
We did an investigation
about our sense of smell. I drew
Pictures about it in my journal.
Oh, yeah. We used our nose
just for that.
Yeah.
Ok, scientists, it's time
for the scent investigation.
Yeah!
Cool.
Here are canisters. And
each one has a different food
In it. And each food has its
own special scent.
And we get to smell them?
You do. After you smell
what's in a canister--no
Looking, just smelling--you can
try to figure out what scent
You smelled. Then draw a
picture of what you think it is
In your journal. When you're
done smelling all the
Canisters, we can look inside
them to see what they really
Are.
I can smell a molecule.
Ha, ha!
Mmm, I smell something.
Oh, I smell something yummy!
[Gerald chuckles]
you're a scientist. You can
Try this, too.
It's time to start our scent
investigation. We are going to
Use our sense of smell to try
and guess what's inside
Different cups. Here's the first
cup. Use your nose to smell
What's inside. Then draw a
picture in your journals of what
You think you just smelled in
the cup.
Time to smell the
second cup. Pass it around
And let everyone have a
chance to smell it. Really think
About the smell and draw a
picture of what you think it
Is.
Ok, here's cup three. Use your
nose and give it a good sniff.
After you smell what's inside,
try to guess what it is.
Time to smell the last cup.
Pass it around and
let everyone smell what's
Inside.
Then draw a picture of what you
think it is you smelled in the
Cup.
Now let's find out what's inside
the first cup.
It's popcorn!
Next let's find out what's in
the second cup.
And it's...
Cinnamon!
And what was that in cup three?
A lemon.
And in the last cup,
there was, ooh, an onion.
Isn't it fun using your
sense of smell?
Ok, scientists, let's see
what kinds of observations you
Made. Sid, would you like to go
first?
Sure. I almost guessed all
the smells right. The first one
Was popcorn. And the next one
was cinnamon. This one had
Lemons. And I thought the last
one was mustard, but it was
Really onions. Hmm.
Overall, though, I'd say my
nose did a pretty good job.
[Sid chuckles]
hey, give me five, nose. Ugh.
[Laughter]
good job, sid's nose. Ok,
Mae, let's look at your journal.
Okey-doke. I didn't know
what this smell was. At first,
I thought there was an orange
inside. Then I thought it was
Lemons. Then I thought it was
lemon-orange juice. And then I
Found out it was just lemons.
[Mae chuckles]
that was a tricky one.
Mm-hmm.
Hey--hey, susie--um--the
lemon has lemony molecules
Floating into our nose, right?
You're right, gerald.
Oh. Um--hey, molecules, how
do you like the inside of my
Nose?
[Laughter]
[all talking at once]
Oh, hey, I know another one
of our senses. Can you guess
What I'm doing? Oh, I see that
slide. And now I see our
Sandbox. And I see mae, and
sid. Hi, sid.
Oh, I know! You're--you're
using your sense of vision.
That's right!
I'm going to try. Um--i
see--the swings.
I see--
gerald looking at the swings.
That's right.
I see susie.
Oh. And I see mae. Hey, look
at us. We're doing a little
Dance as we look around. It's
our own look-around dance.
* Look at that! Look at that!
And do the look-around
the light enters your eye
As fast as hocus-pocus
a signal goes to your brain
And your eyes start to focus
oh, do the look-around--
Do the look-around--
you look up and down, yeah
Look to the left and the right
your eyes let in the light
And look at that, look at that
look at that, look at that
And do the look-around--
hoo hoo!
An eagle has good vision
he sees everything he passes
Well, one thing I've never seen
is an eagle wearing glasses
Huh
do the look-around--
Do the look-around--
you look up and down
Yeah
look to the left and the right
Your eyes let in the light
look at that, look at that
Look at that, look at that
do the look-around--
Ooh ooh!
If the eye chart looks blurry
and it's hard to see a letter
Try on some glasses now
you'll see a whole lot better
Oh, do the look-around
yeah
You look up and down
yeah
Look to the left and the right
your eyes let in the light
Look at that, look at that
look at that, look at that
Do the look-around
look around! *
I'm doing the look-around.
* The look-around
if you look around *
I'm looking all around.
Keep looking. Keep looking.
[Laughter]
yay!
Yeah! Oh, hey--hey, guess
what, everyone! I'm using
Another sense. I'm feeling my
hands and using my sense of
Touch.
Oh, hey, that reminds me--we
did a really cool investigation
Where we got to touch all kinds
of different things. Don't you
Guys remember?
Oh, yeah.
Right!
Different things, and we
were pirates.
Oh, that's right, the
pirates.
[Imitating pirate] ok,
scientists, we're going to do a
Texture treasure hunt--arr!
Cool!
Everyone's going to explore
the room and bring things back
To the table--arr. And you can
use words to describe different
Textures--arr. And when you
bring your textures back, we
Can compare and contrast
them--arr.
But what happens if I can't
bring my texture back? What if
It's the blackboard or the
sink or the floor?
You can describe the texture
on these sticky notes.
Oh.
And just stick them on.
Ok.
But--oh, no, wait a minute.
I can't write.
Oh, you don't have to write
words to describe something.
Scientists use pictures and
symbols all the time. Now, if
You wanted to draw something
that's bumpy, how would you do
It?
Um--
hmm.
Oh, you know, I would draw
hills, because hills are bumpy.
Oh--oh, and if something is
smooth, you can draw straight
Lines. No bumps.
Great ideas. All righty,
mateys, let's start the texture
Treasure hunt--arr!
[Cheers]
arr, arr, arr, arr.
[As pirate] oh--arr--you're
a scientist. You can try this,
Too--arr.
It's time for our texture
treasure hunt. Go explore the
Room and find a texture you
like.
Try touching all kinds of
different things. Feel their
Textures.
When you've found lots
of different
Textures, bring them back to
the table so we can compare and
Contrast how they feel.
It looks like you've
found some really great stuff,
And all with different
textures. This ribbon
Feels soft, but this coral feels
rough. And the fork is pointy on
Top.
This sponge is scratchy on
one side and soft on the other
Side. Let's draw some
observations in our journals.
Go ahead. You can
color the pictures of the
Different things that you found
on our texture treasure hunt.
Think about the texture of each
item you found.
Wow. We've found so many items
today, and they all have
Different textures. Soft...
Rough...
Scratchy...
And soft and smooth.
What a fantastic texture
treasure hunt.
[Chimes]
[laughter]
Wow!
My scientists
are remembering lots of great
Things about our senses.
Mm-hmm.
I think it's time to go and
play with all your wonderful
Ideas.
Cool!
All right! Yeah!
Let's go. It's break time!
Come on, gerald, hurry up!
I'm coming.
It's time for--
good laughternoon!
[Laughter]
hey, gabriella--
Yes?
Why did one shirt chase the
other?
I don't know. Why?
Because they were playing
tag.
[Laughter]
hey, sid--
Yeah?
What did one shirt say to
the other shirt?
Hmm. I don't know. What?
Nothing. Everyone knows that
shirts can't talk.
[Laughter]
knock, knock.
Um--who's there?
Ivonna.
Ivonna who?
Ivonna scratch my arm. I
have an itch.
[Laughter]
and now I have an itch on my
Other arm. Oh, and now, I have
an itch on my belly. Oh, I'm so
Itchy.
Oh, no! I think I'm itchy,
too. Oh!
Oh, no! Now I'm itchy! Yikes!
I'm itchy, too!
I'm so itchy. Oh--oh, no!
I'm too itchy! Ah!
Now, that's itchy.
[Recorded laughter]
ooh-hoo! Ha! Ah! Ooh!
Ok. Let's play a game.
Ok.
And I'll be the announcer,
since I'm wearing a tiara. It's
Time to play [echoes] no smell
bothers him!
Great. Cool.
I forgot to tell you--um--
huh? What?
You have to pretend like no
smell bothers you, ok?
Oh, it's me? Ok.
[Gabriella chuckles]
cool.
Very good. Let's see if this
smell bothers you.
Hmm, hmm, hmm.
Hello, I'm gabriella's
assistant.
Oh.
Here, sid, smell some rotten
eggs.
Ok.
[Sid sniffs]
hmm, no problem. They smell
Good.
Wow. Um--ok.
Amazing!
Thank you.
The rotten eggs don't bother
him. How about the smell of a
Skunk?
Hmm.
Hello, I am a smelly skunk.
P.u., P.u., P.u., P.u.
No, smells fine to me.
Ok, ok. How about now?
Stinky, stinky, stinky, stinky.
Yeah, you know, on that side
of me, you actually smell great.
Unbelievable!
Oh, no!
Thank you, thank you.
Ok, ok, ok.
And now, it's time for the
biggest challenge of all!
Wah! Wah! Wah! Mama! I'm a
baby! Mama! Wah, wah!
Oh, no! Not a baby who
smells like zeke! Oh, no, he
Needs to be changed! Ah! Yikes!
Hey, come back! What's
wrong? Is my diaper smell
Traveling through the air? It
must be my smell molecules!
It's time for--
good laughternoon!
Hey, sid--
yes?
What did one eye say to the
other eye?
Hmm, I don't know. What did
one eye say to the other eye?
Don't look now, but
something between us smells.
Get it?
Yep, I nose what you mean.
[Laughter]
hey, sid--
Yes?
What is something you can
watch that also smells?
Hmm. I don't know. What?
Smellevision.
[Laughter]
hey--um--how do you stop a
Fish from smelling?
I don't know. How do you
stop a fish from smelling?
You hold his nose. "I'm a
fish, and I can't smell. I
Can't smell anything."
[Laughter]
yeah, I still can't smell
Anything.
Oh, yeah? Well, I smell a
fish. P.u.
Oh.
Now, that's smelly.
[Recorded laughter]
[laughter]
Hey, I heard you guys
playing all the way over there.
It sounded like you were having
fun.
Yeah.
Oh, susie, you heard us.
That's another one of our
senses.
Oh, yeah. Our sense of
hearing.
You're right. Hey, that
reminds me of a song about the
Sounds we hear all around us.
* Waves of sound--
are running through the air
Waves of sound--
for the world to hear
Take the time to listen to
the sounds that you've been
Missing--
waves of sound--
Bring music to my ears
sound waves float in different
Lengths
sound waves come in different
Strengths
a tuba is big
So is a football crowd
a whisper is soft
A rocking band is loud
your ears hear traffic
And a song with rhyme
and mom calling you for dinner
At the very same time
some sounds are so loud
You hold your ears
when you're near 'em
Some are so small
you can barely hear 'em
Waves of sound--
are riding through the air
Waves of sound--
for the world to hear
Take the time to listen to
the sounds that you've been
Missing
waves of sound--
Bring music to my ears
ears are a natural
Listening tool
some are long and floppy
Like the ears on a mule
you know a lot of animals
Have got them, too
you hear them
And they hear you
make a sound wave
With your voice
make it loud or soft
Now that's your choice
take the time to hear the sounds
Wherever you go
my favorite sound is a friend
Saying hello
waves of sound--
Are riding through the air
waves of sound--
For the world to hear
take the time to listen to
The sounds that you've been
missing
Waves of sound--
bring music to my ears *
Wow! We have so many senses.
Yes, we do. Can you all
count how many senses we have?
Our sense of vision. That's
one.
Oh--our sense of smell!
[Gerald sniffs]
ha, ha! I smell good.
Um--that's senses.
Oh, our sense of touch.
That's .
Yeah.
Ooh, don't forget our sense
of taste.
[Makes tasting sound]
that's .
And then [whispers] there's
one more sense.
What?
I can't hear what you said.
Our sense of hearing!
[Laughter]
that's !
So we have senses. Hmm.
Wow. Our bodies are amazing.
I think all you scientists
are amazing.
Thank you.
Thanks, susie.
Ok, my senses experts, let's
use our sense of vision and
Look for the front door,
because it's time to go home.
Ok, yeah!
Oh! Cool, yeah!
Ok. I'm going to find you,
door.
I think you might be
somewhere, mr. Door, and gerald
Will find you. Or are you over
here? Oh, oh.
And I'm looking--
oh, I think you're over here.
I'm looking. I'm getting
warmer.
I see it. I see a door.
Over here!
Ok. Let me try to use my
senses. I just brushed my teeth
And I can taste the watermelon
toothpaste in my mouth. Now
I'll use my sense of vision to
look at dr. Beaks. Ha, ha.
Watch! Bam! Hmm, I just used my
sense of touch. Whoa! Missed me.
Now what about my sense of
hearing? Hmm.
Sid?
Huh? Ooh, my sense of
hearing just heard my dad. Hmm.
Hey, sid, it's almost
bedtime.
Whoa! My sense of smell
tells me zeke might need a
Diaper change.
Yeah, I'm on my way to
change him right now. And then
It's night-night for little
zekie. Right, buddy?
[Zeke babbles]
night night.
Night night, little brother.
Ok, let's go. Ok. Yeah.
Whew! It's too bad there
isn't something to help our
Noses when things don't smell
so nice. Wait a minute. Maybe I
Can invent something. Ok, I've
got it! Here's my super duper
Ooper schmooper big idea! I'm
going to invent a smellinator
Machine that can roll around
like a big truck, scooping up
All the bad-smelling things in
the world, like bags of
Garbage, and diapers, and old
socks, and old cheese, and
Factory smoke. Yuck! And I'll
put them in a super big good-
Smelling sack. But the
smellinator also has a
Spreader. It can spread nice
and yummy-smelling things out
All over the place. I'll spread
fresh flowers and cookies and
Yummy cake. Everyone will be
happy sniffing the air. The
World will be a better place,
and noses will be really happy,
Too. Everything smells so good.
The garbage smells fantastic.
Flowery. I could smell these
molecules forever.
[Laughs]
and that's my super duper ooper
Schmooper big idea!
[Recorded applause]
thank you, thank you.
[Sid chuckles]
hey, why don't you try to use
All of your senses, too? Go
look at something, and then
Listen to it and touch it,
smell it. Ah--but don't taste
It, unless it's food, something
yummy. Huh. Senses are the
Best. And I know because I am
sid the science kid. [Echoes]
And remember, keep asking lots
and lots of questions. See you
Later, scientists.
[Sid sniffs]
boy, those smell good, yeah.
Hmm. What am I looking at? You,
dr. Beaks! I'm going to touch
You.
[Sid laughs]
yeah. I'm going to touch you
Again.
[Makes karate sounds]
[chuckles]
Wow!
Oh, hi. We're just checking
out our website. You can
Explore with us.
Yeah!
Oh, that's a great idea.
Come join us. Visit
pbskids.org. And there's a lot
Of great information for
grownups, too.
I think we look pretty good
in the computer.
Yeah!
Investigate, explore,
discover!
Wow!
Hey, I know how to
investigate, explore, and
Discover. And I bet you do,
too. Investigate--that's when
You want to find stuff out.
Explore--that's when you look
at things in the world around
You.
Discover--that's when you
investigate and explore, and
You find out something new.
Be sure to check out another
episode full of amazing science.
My friends and I will
learn how to use science tools,
Investigate how things change,
