01x20 - Sid's Health Day

Post by bunniefuu »

Hey, is this thing on?

* Hey, sid, what do you say?

What you wanna learn today?

I wanna know why things
happen and how

And I wanna know everything now
oh, yeah!

How does this thing work?

Why does that stuff change?

How does that do
what it just did?

Hmm. What's up with the sky?

You think I could fly?

The world's spinning
and I wanna know why

I've got a lot of questions
and big ideas

I'm "sid the science kid" *
[making rocket sounds]

I'm running low on rocket fuel.

I've just radioed base.

Hopefully the reserves will
show up soon. So far, skies are

Clear. Everything's cool, nice,
clear sailing and--oh, no!

I've just hit a gigantic
penguin. I've no idea where

He came from. Aah! Going down.

[Loud sneeze]
oh...hmm.

Did you hear that? That was
my mom sneezing.

[Sneeze]
I think she's getting the

Cold that my dad just had.

He was sneezing a lot, and now
mom is.

Sid, it's time for school.

We have to go.

Ah-choo! [Sniffling]
bless you, mom.

Thank you, sweetie.

Welcome.

Wow, I do not wanna get mom's
cold. Hmm...i think I'm gonna

Have to investigate this more
at school, 'cause I just gotta

Know what can I do to stay
healthy. [Echoing]

Let's go, sid!

Ok, mom. I'm coming.

* I love my mom
* uh-huh

* My mom is cool
* uh-huh

* But now it's time
for having fun at school *

Yeah!

Ha ha!

Hi.ha!

* I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you

There's gabriela *
watch what I can do.

Ha ha!

Yeah! Ready, set, go!

Wow.

* I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you

Hey, there's gerald *
yeah. Check out my moves.

Ha ha ha! I'm a rock star!

Yeah! Ha ha! Awesome!

Cool.

Go!

* I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you

Hey, there's may *
may I show you how I groove?

Uh-huh. Whee! Ha ha!

Groovy.

* We're looking
for our friends

We're looking for you
hey, there's sid! *

Did you hear the one about
the kid who wanted to know

Everything about everything?

That's you!

Ha ha! You got me.

[All laughing]
* we're looking for

Our friends
and look what we found

We found each other
friends *

[Laughing]
vroom. Rocket ship blasting

Through!

[Scat singing]
hey, gabriela. Hey, may.

Hi, sid.

Hi, sid.

Hey, my mom has a cold,
and I really don't wanna get it.

I wanna figure out a way to stay
healthy.

Oh, I'll help you, sid.

Yeah, having a cold isn't fun
at all.

No.

I had a cold once, and
I couldn't go out and play.

Oh.

I'll help, too, sid.

Yay.

I had a cold, and I felt
really yucky.

I will help you, too, sid.

Yeah!

Hello. Good morning,
everyone. We're having class

Outside today.

Yay!

Oh, boy! Fresh air!

That's teacher susie.

Whoo-hoo! Ha ha ha!

Ah, what a beautiful day
for an outside class.

Everyone having a good morning?

You bet.

Yeah.

Susie, susie. We were just
talking about how to stay

Healthy.

Yeah, I don't wanna catch
my mom's cold.

Well, there are definitely
things we can all do to stay

Healthy. Does anyone remember
how to keep those cold germs

Away?

I remember. We did an
investigation about that.

Today we're going to find out
the best way to make sure your

Hands stay nice and clean.

So you can keep the germs
away.

That's right. Ok, first
you're going to try cleaning

Your hands with just these
paper towels. And then you're

Going to try cleaning your hands
over here with soap and warm

Water.

Um, yes, but my hands
aren't dirty.

Well then, maybe this
will help.

Wow. Dirt.

Awesome.

You can all dig your hands
into the dirt and rub it in

Really well. Then try cleaning
your hands with a paper towel.

And you can use these magnifying
glasses to help you look really

Carefully at the dirt on your
hands and finger nails.

Wow...

And if the paper towel
doesn't work, then we use soap

And water?

You got it.

Ok, scientists, go for it.

It's time to get dirty.

Ha ha!

Oh, boy.

Hey, you're a scientist.

You can try this, too. Come on.

In this investigation, we're
going to find out the best way

To get your hands really clean.

First, cover your hands with
lots and lots of dirt.

When your hands are really
covered in dirt, try wiping them

Clean with just a dry paper
towel.

Are your hands really clean?

Hmm. They look clean.

Now let's take a closer look
with the magnifying glass.

Hey, wait. There's still dirt
on your hands.

Wow, magnifying glasses are
great science tools.

They show us up close how much
dirt it's still on your hands.

Now wash your hands
with warm water and soap.

To make sure you wash long
enough, don't stop scrubbing

Until you've sung the entire
alphabet.

* A, b, c, d, e, f, g
h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p

Q, r, s, t, u, v
w, x, y, and z *

Now wipe off all the soap,
and let's look at your hands.

Wow, compared to how they looked
before, your hands are really

Clean. Let's explore with
the magnifying glass for

A closer look. Hey, there's
no dirt on your hands. Let's

Draw some observations in your
journals. What did your hands

Look like when they were dirty?

And what did your hands look
like after you used soap and

Water? Washing your hands with
soap and water is the best way

To clean your hands. And it's
also a great way to keep away

Germs.

So, who wants to share some
observations from our

Investigation?

Oh, I do. I put my hand into
the dirt, and here's the picture

Of what it looked like when
I used the paper towel to clean

It. And here is the picture of
my hand after I washed with

Soap and water. All clean!

Oh, very nice, gabriela.

Your pictures really show how
the soap and water worked.

Great. Ok, sid.

May we look at your journal?

Oh, ok. Well, first I
squished my hands into the dirt.

I liked that part. And then
I looked at all the dirt on my

Hands. I even had dirt on the
little lines on my hand.

Then, the soap and water got rid
of all the dirt.

Ooh, I like the way you used
your magnifying glass to make

Your observations, sid.

Thank you.

And so I washed my hands with
soap and water.

Hey, hey, I know another way
to stay healthy. Um, eat food

That's good for you.

Very good, gerald.

You're talking about eating
nutritious food.

And you have to eat a little
bit of different kinds of foods,

Like a little bit of beans and
a little bit of yogurt.

Oh, some bananas and carrots.

Yeah, and rice and chicken
and pasta.

Those are all great examples
of nutritious foods.

Hey, do you guys remember these
nutritious foods from around

The world?

Oh, yes!

Ladies and gentlemen, here
they are. From all over the

World, the delicious,
nutritious band!

* We are food from
all over the world

You know that we're delicious
international flavors, yeah

We're nutritious
try a little bit of everything

And you can't go wrong
we make your body

Every body healthy and strong
yeah *

We're the fruits
and vegetables

We're oranges from the u.s.a.

Brussels sprout from
brussels.

Broccoli from spain.

And all of us give you
muscles.

We are the dairy.

We're milk from wisconsin.

Cheese from france.

Try yogurt from greece.

We'll make you want to dance.

How about some protein?

We're frankfurters
from frankfurt.

Sushi from japan.

And fish from england.

Makes us part of your daily
plan.

Mmm...bread.

We are pita bread
from morocco.

Spaghetti from rome.

And rice from china.

We're coming to your home.

And don't forget
the sometimes food.

Chocolate from holland.

We're from hungary.

We are cake.

Enjoy us once in a while.

Too much is a mistake.

* We are food
from all over the world

You know that we're delicious
international flavors, yeah

We're nutritious
try a little bit of everything

And you can't go wrong
we make your body

Every body healthy and strong
yeah! *

[Humming]
ooh! Unh!

Ok, so after we eat lots of
healthy food, we have to brush

Our teeth, right?

That's right. You gotta keep
your teeth healthy, too.

Yeah, yeah. I remember we did
a teeth investigation, and we

Took bites of food.

Nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh!

It was a really yummy
investigation.

I call today's investigation
"teeth time!"

The best way to see what teeth
actually do is to look at them,

Then use them.

Nuh, nuh, nuh, nuh!

My teeth are ready.

Ok. First we'll observe the
different kinds of teeth we have

In our mouths with these dental
mirrors.

Wow, they're so small.

They're small round
mirrors that real dentists use.

Then, we can look at each
other's teeth to see what they

Look like.

Oh, what a cute little
mirror. Ha. And what a cute

Little may. Hi, may! I see you.

Ha ha. Then, after we look at
our different kinds of teeth,

You're going to use your teeth
to bite and chew some food.

Oh...

Yum.

Yeah, all right! I love
yummy investigations!

Your job is to compare and
contrast how your different

Teeth work. Ok? Let's begin
our "teeth time" investigation.

Ok.

Hey, you're a scientist.

You can try this, too.

Today we're going to explore
the different kinds of teeth

We have in our mouths.

Your front teeth are called
incisors, and next to your

Incisors, you have pointy teeth
called canines. Look at your

Teeth that are way in the back.

Those teeth are your molars.

Now let's explore our teeth
and use them to find out their

Different jobs. If you need to
bite something soft like

A banana, what teeth do you use?

That's right. You use your front
incisor teeth.

Ok, let's explore what teeth
you use to bite something

Harder, like a carrot.

It looks like you all used
your canine teeth, your side

Teeth. Those canines are good
for biting through

Really crunchy foods.

And once you've bitten through
the crunchy carrot, you can use

Your back molars to chew it up.

Let's compare and contrast
how your different teeth work.

It's hard to bite into a carrot
with your front incisors, but

It's much easier with
your pointy canine teeth. Ok.

Time to draw some observations
in your journals. You can draw

Pictures of the foods you ate.

And really think about which
teeth you used to bite and chew

Up the food.

Hey, my dentist always tells
me, "gerald, you've got to

Brush, brush, brush, brush,
'cause you need healthy teeth."

Oh. Oh, hey, maybe I could be
a dentist when I grow up.

Oh, gerald, I think you'd be
a wonderful dentist.

Ha ha. Yes!

Ok, my healthy scientists,
go play!

Yeah!

Let's go!

It's time to play. Cool.

Wait, wait. Wait for me.

Ok.

It's time for "good
laughternoon!" Ha ha ha!

Hey, sid.

Yes, may?

What kind of exercise do
cows like best?

I don't know. What kind of
exercise do cows like best?

Moooooving their bodies.

Ha ha ha!

Hey, gerald.

Yes.

How do porcupines play
leapfrog?

I don't know. How?

Very carefully.

Ha ha ha!

Uh, may.

Yes?

What do you call a chicken
who's dancing on top of

A snowy mountain?

I don't know. What?

Well, you call him on the
phone and you say, "hey,

Chicken, what are you doing on
top of that snowy mountain?

'Cause chickens, they usually
live on farms, but you're on a

Snowy mountain. Ha. Chicken,
you're so silly. Hey, get back

On that farm." Ha ha ha!

Ha ha. Silly chicken.

Yeah. Ha ha ha!

Now that's funny.

[Laughter]
ok. Let's play pretend.

I'm the mommy and sid is the
daddy. And today we're taking

Our big kid daughter, may, to
the dentist for a check-up.

Ha ha. Ok, daughter, time to
go to dr. Gerald the friendly

Dentist.

Yeah, 'cause I'm a big kid,
so yeah, I'm a cool, big kid.

Yeah. Off we go to the
dentist.

* Doo doo doo
oh, here we are.

Ahem. Closer.

Oh, hello there. I am your
dentist and welcome to your

Check-up. Have a seat here,
please, in the chair.

Ok. Thank you.

Ok. I'm just going to take
a look and, uh, yes, yes.

Everything looks good to me.

No cavities.

But, doctor, that is our
daughter's elbow, not her teeth.

Oh, right, of course.

Well, let me just, uh, try.

Here we go. It's...[Sniffing]
a little on the stinky side.

But stinky teeth are ok, too.

It all checks out.

Wait a minute. Those aren't
her teeth, those are her feet.

Oh, right, of course.

Yes, yes. Um, ah, here we are.

I can see now you have perfect
teeth.

Yes, yes. These are the best
teeth I've ever seen. Ha!

Doctor, those are not my
teeth. That's my hair.

These are my teeth.

Oh, wow. Nice teeth.

Let's see, one, two, three.

Yep. Looks like she has them
all.

I don't have all my teeth.

See? I'm missing one.

Right there.

Oh.

What kind of dentist are you?

Well, I'm the kind of dentist
who doesn't know anything about

Teeth. Ha ha ha!

Ok, who's next?

Not me!

Hey, come back!

Come back!

Come on!

I went to dental school
and everything.

It's time for "good
laughternoon!" Ha ha ha!

Hey, may, what sound does
a tooth make when it sneezes?

Um, I don't know.

I-i-i-choo.

Ha ha ha!

Hey, gerald.

Yes.

How does your mouth count?

Uh, I don't know. How?

One, tooth, three, four.

Ha ha ha!

Good one.

Knock knock.

Who's there?

[Giggling]
no, but really, who's there?

Oh, well.

Knock knock.

Um, who--who's there?

This is really strange.

Knock knock.

Hey, who's there?

Ha ha!

Oh, may. What are you doing
here?

I just wanted to say hello.

Hello. That's it.

Ha ha.

Now that's funny and nice.

[Laughter]
it's time to play pretend.

Once upon a time, there was
a king who ruled over the land

At sidville.

Ha ha! On his birthday,
the king decided that everyone

Would eat cake all day long.

I hereby declare that we're
gonna eat cake every day.

Gerald "the jester" in
a chef's hat was happy.

Heh heh heh.

Scientist gabriela wasn't
sure that was a good idea.

Pardon me, mr. King, but you
need to eat a little from each

Food group every day.

No way. Cake is yummy.

Now, let the eating of cake
begin!

Yeah!

Nuh, nuh, nuh, nuh...

Meanwhile, scientist
gabriela ate a little bit

From each food group.

Oh, now I'm too stuffed full
of cake to be king.

Oh...

No problem. I feel great.

Ha ha! I rule.

The end.

* La la la la la
ha ha! * La la la la la

Ok, scientists, over here.

Now, we know about keeping germs
away with handwashing, eating

Nutritious foods, and brushing
our teeth. But there's another

Thing we can do to be healthy.

We have to exercise.

Yeah! So who's ready to move
their body?

We are!

Who's ready to really get
down and boogie?

We are!

Ok, then let's move our
bodies and exercise. Here we go!

Oh...

* Work your body, everybody
work your body like you should

Everybody, work your body
make your body feel real good

Your brain loves the activity
of when your body hustles

Your blood provides the oxygen
to build up all your muscles

So giddy up and go
it gets your heart a-pumping

It's time to energize yourself
come on, let's get to jumping

Ohhh...

Work your body, everybody
work your body like you should

Everybody, work your body
make your body feel real good

Work your body, everybody
you'll feel better

When you do
when you work your body

Then your body's
gonna work for you

Every day it's easier
to work a little harder

More blood is flowing
to your brain

And so you're thinking smarter
get your feet up off the ground

And start some groovy movement
now turn it up

And shake it out
and you'll see an improvement

But when you sit around
everything starts slowing down

Your energy starts to shrink
and it gets harder to think

So get yourself up and
ohhh

Work your body, everybody
work your body like you should

Everybody, work your body
make your body feel real good

Work your body, everybody
you'll feel better when you do

When you work your body
then your body's gonna

Work for you
ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, whoo *

Ok, scientists, now let's
move our bodies into the

Classroom, put your journals
back, and get ready to go home.

Yay!

It's fun to move your body.

Wow, what a great day.

Yeah, and there are so many
things to do to stay healthy.

Yeah, we have to exercise
our bodies. Whoo whoo whoo!

Ha ha ha!

And brush our teeth.

Chh chh chh chh.

Yeah, and you have to wash
your hands with water and soap.

Scrubby dub dub.

Scrubby dubby dub.

And eat super healthy food.

Yeah.

Scrubby dubby dub.

Scrubby dubby dub.

Scrubby, scrubby, scrubby.

Well, I hereby declare that
all my scientists are health

Experts.

Yay!

And now it's time to go home.

Hey, let's exercise our way
out of here.

Yeah!

That's easy.

Yeah.

* Hmm hmm hmm hmm
ha ha ha ooh, ooh, ooh

Ha ha ooh *
well, today I wanted to know

How to stay healthy, and I found
out. You have to exercise and

Eat healthy food and then brush
your teeth. And you always have

To wash your hands with soap
and water to keep germs away.

And I know another thing that
would help you stay really

Healthy.

What's that?

Sleep.

Ha ha. You're right, mom.

[Zeke babbling]
oh, looks like someone's

Sleepy right now. Ok, it's good
night time for you, mr. Zeke.

Say night-night to sid.

Night-night.

Night-night, zekey.

I'll be back to tuck you in,
sid. Oh, and good news.

I've stopped sneezing.

I think I'm getting better.

All right, mom! Ha ha.

So hey, I've been thinking.

I wanna make sure I can always
stay healthy, even when I'm

Watching tv. Hmm...

Ok, I've got it.

Here's my super-duper-ooper-
schmooper big idea.

I'm going to invent keep-moving
tv. It's a television that only

Works when you exercise your
body. You can touch your toes--

One little piggy, little
piggies, little piggies.

Whew! Or you can do jumping
jacks. , , . Whoa.

I like jumping jacks.

Or you can dance like an octopus
sprayed with tickle powder.

Ha ha ha ha ha!

Hey, wait. Ah, you can basically
exercise however you want.

That's right. All you have to do
is move, and your television

Will work. And that's my
super-duper-ooper-schmooper

Big idea! Yeah.

[Applause]
I'll keep thinking of ways to

Stay healthy, and you can, too.

Eat healthy food, brush your
teeth, stay away from bad germs,

And exercise a lot. I know I
will, because I am sid the

Science kid. [Echoing]
and remember, keep asking lots

And lots of questions.

See you later, healthy
scientists. Ha ha.

Right now I'm gonna move my body
right into bed.

Ok, uh, running in place.

Ah, maybe a jumping jack or .

, . Ok, that's good.

I think I'm all tired out.

Ah...good night. Ooh.

Wow.

That's us!

Oh, hi. We're just checking
out our web site. You can

Explore with us.

Yeah!

It's a great idea.

Come join us. Visit pbskids.org.

There's a lot of great
information for grownups, too.

I think we look pretty
good in the computer.

Yeah!

Observe, compare, contrast!

Wow...

Hey, I know how to observe,
compare, and contrast.

And I bet you do, too.

Observe--that's when you look
really closely at something

And listen to it and maybe
even smell it and feel it.

Compare--that's when you look at
things and think about how

They're the same.

Contrast--that's when you
observe things and think about

What's different about them.

Be sure to check out another
episode full of amazing science.

My friends and I will
learn how to use science tools,

Investigate how things change,
discover our senses, and explore

How to keep our bodies healthy.

Seen you next time on "sid, the
science kid."
