It's me, sid. I want to know
how I can lift my heavy

Dinosaur onto my bed.

So my friends and I are going
to investigate how to use

Simple machines. Come explore
with me, "sid the science kid,"

Ok, a little bit further.

Oh.

Whew!

Boy.

Oh, hi!

I'm sid.

I'm getting all my stuffed
animals onto my--well, it may

Look like my bed, but it's
really my rocket ship.

Yeah, I call it my sid-o-rocket
super blaster because I'm

Getting ready to take a trip all
the way to the moon!

And my friends here are all
coming with me.

Hmm: except for you, dr. Beaks.

You're mission control.

You got to stay back on earth
and make sure everything's ok

Down here.

Ok, all that's left is to get
you, my co-pilot space captain

Arnie, up on the bed!

Ready, captain arnie?

Here we go.

[Grunts]
ooh. Um, ok.

[Grunts]
oh. Wow!

Arnie, you're very heavy.

Oh, I can push you, but
I can't seem to...

[Grunts]
lift you.

Whew!

Well, you know, that's kind of a
problem because I can't fly to

The moon without arnie.

But he's so heavy.

Hmm.

How do we get him up on my bed?

I just got to know.

What's the big idea with lifting
heavy things?

How can I lift up...

[Echoes]
arnie?

]] Sid, breakfast time!

]] Ya-hoo!

Breakfast!

Ha-ha!

Breakfast time!

Whew.

Commander sid reporting for
breakfast.

]] Morning, commander.

How about some oatmeal before
your big trip?

]] Ooh. Yes, please.

]] Oh, that's right.

Tonight's the night for your big
rocket ship ride to the moon!

]] A da moon!

]] Yeah.

]] And all the animals are
already on board: all except for

Arnie.

I just can't get arnie up into
my rocket ship.

I've tried every way I can
think of, but he's just

Too heavy to lift.

]] Well, lifting heavy things
can be a real problem.

You know, down at the
construction site we lift

Heavy things all day long.

]] Yeah?

]] Yeah: heavy crates and tools.

And here at home we lift
heavy babies!

]] [Zeke laughs]
]] dad is really strong.

]] So you want me to help you
lift arnie?

]] No, thanks, dad.

I'm going to lift him
all by myself.

But, um, how do you lift all
that heavy stuff at work?

]] Well, sometimes we lift heavy
things with help from machines.

Here.

I'll show you on the computer.

]] Ok.

]] [Babbling]
]] all right, there we go.

Ok, take a look at this machine.

]] Wow. That's cool.

What is it?

]] This is a backhoe, and it
helps to lift heavy dirt.

And here's a forklift, and that
helps to lift other heavy

Things.

And here is a huge crane.

Now, this lifts really heavy
things.

]] Huh. That's cool.

Thanks, dad, but I don't think I
can get any of those machines

Into my room.

]] Ah.

Well, you know, we could
fit a backhoe--

]] Don't even think about it.

]] Oh.

Well, that's ok, dad.

Because after breakfast, I'm
going to investigate lifting

Heavy stuff at school.

]] Oh. That's a good idea, sid.

]] Yeah. Thanks, mom.

backhoe?

]] Mort...

My mom got a big jug of milk at
the store, and she asked me to

I used to just have some paper

colored pencils and glue sticks.

Gabriela says that a jug of milk

something with the class?

]] We were talking about how
hard it is to lift heavy things.

]] Yeah.

I tried to lift arnie, my
stuffed dinosaur, onto my bed,

But wow.

He is really big and really
heavy.

]] Oh, I bet he is, sid.

Well, my scientists, I can think
of a simple machine right here

At school that can help us all
lift heavy things: an inclined

Plane.

]] Wow.

Is that like a flying airplane
that flies?

]] Nope, gerald, it's not an
airplane.

It's a different kind of plane.

Follow me.

]] Oh. Ok.

]] The inclined plane I'm
talking about is right out

In the playground.

]] Ok.

]] I don't see a plane.

]] It's the slide!

]] What?!

]] The slide?

]] Susie, I thought slides were
just for sliding.

You know: "here I come
down the slide!

Whoosh!"

]] They are for sliding, may.

But slides can also help us.

Hmm.

Are there any scientists around

Investigate inclined planes?

]] Yeah! Yeah!

]] Ok, let's have a special
super fab lab outside at the

Slide!

Grab your journals and let's go!

]] Yay!

]] Come on, sid.

Let's get our journals.

]] Ok.

]] It's the super fab lab...

]] Outside!

Investigate, explore, discover!

]] Wow!

]] Blast off!

I'm sliding through!

]] Ok, for today's
investigation, we're going to

Figure out how to get this heavy
basket of books way up there.

]] Ooh.

Do you think that using the
slide--i mean, the inclined

Plane is the way to go?

]] Well, that's what we're going
to investigate.

]] Oh, maybe it would be easier
if we all tried to lift it

Together.

Teamwork!

]] It might be.

You should try it.

]] Ok.

]] Ooh. I've got an idea.

Hey, what if we get a rope
and tie it around the basket,

And then someone can go to the
top and pull it up?

]] Oh, good idea.

]] You could try that, too.

]] But, yeah, I think that
pushing it up the slide--yeah,

That's going to be easiest.

]] Try them all, and see which
one works best.

]] Well, ok.

Let's try picking up the basket
first.

]] Ok.

]] Oh, hey, you're a scientist.

You can try this, too.

]] Ok, your challenge is to get
this heavy basket from the

Ground way up to the top
of the slide.

It looks like it's too heavy
to lift it.

Let's try something else.

Tie a rope around the basket and
try to pull it up.

Ok, the friends up top will try
to pull the rope while the

Friends on the ground help
to lift the basket up.

Oh, you're very close, but that
basket is really heavy.

Anyone have other ideas
how you lift the basket

Up there?

Right! You can try pushing the
basket up the slide.

A slide is a type of simple
machine called an inclined

Plane.

It makes pushing heavy things
much easier.

Give the end of the rope to the
friends at the top of the slide.

They can pull the basket up
while the friends on the

Bottom push the basket.

Great job.

You got the basket up to the top
using the slide.

Ok, it's time to make some
observations in your journal.

You can draw pictures of the
different ways you tried to lift

Up the basket.

First, you tried to lift up
the basket, then you tried

Pulling it up, and then you used
the slide.

]] Ok, scientists,
congratulations on getting

The books to the top.

Oh, I can't wait to see what
observations you made.

Gabriela, would you like to go
first?

]] Sure.

Ok, I couldn't lift the basket
up at all by myself, or even

With all my friends helping.

But then susie tied a rope
around the basket, and sid and I

Went to the top of the slide so
we could pull it up while gerald

And may pushed the basket from
down below.

And--and you helped, too, susie.

]] Oh, ok. Sure.

I learned that you can use an
inclined plane to push things

Up, and that gave me an idea.

Maybe I can use some kind of a
slide like we used for the

Basket to push arnie up
onto my bed.

]] Now, that's a great idea.

I can't wait to hear how it
goes.

Well, I am so impressed with
all my scientists.

You know so much about inclined
planes.

Well, I think it's time to play
with all your new ideas.

Today we're going to see who has
the funniest way to slide down

gorilla!

[Imitates gorilla]

slide guy in the world!

Hey, I'm not moving.

I think my pants are stuck.

Um, ok.

I'm going to change my name to

So today we learned how to lift
up heavy things with an inclined

Plane.

Well, guess what.

A long, long time ago, before
they had cranes and backhoes and

Big machines, they also used
inclined planes to lift up heavy

Things.

]] Wow.

]] That's right.

[Music plays]
in a place called egypt, they

Built a huge pyramid with big
stone blocks, and they lifted up

Those heavy blocks using
inclined planes.

]] ♪ Heave-ho ♪
]] ♪ push it up

Push it up the inclined plane
that simple machine

Saves lots of stress and strain
if you wanna build a pyramid

Do what the egyptians did
push it up

at first, they tried

To lift the stones
but they got aches and cramps

They figured out it's easier
to use a system of ramps

They made a smooth surface
and, yeah, that does the trick

That's how they built a pyramid
pretty darn quick

Whoever thought of that
was really using their brain

If you wanna build a pyramid

Well, we learned that slides
have a special name.

They're called inclined planes,
and sometimes they're even

Called ramps.

]] Ooh.

Ramps are wonderful things.

They help all kinds of people.

A long time ago, people in
wheelchairs had trouble getting

Up stairs to go into houses and
buildings, and they had trouble

Getting downstairs, too.

Other people had to lift the
person in the wheelchair, and,

Believe me, that's hard work.

Whoo!

But then someone got the great
idea to build a wheelchair ramp.

Then the wheelchair could roll
up the ramp--oh, that's right, a

Ramp--right into the house or
building or wherever they

Needed to!

My friend helen uses a
wheelchair, and she zips up and

Down inclined planes like
nobody's business.

[Laughs]
]] way to go, inclined planes!

]] Oh, I agree. Way to go!

]] My grandma knows lots of cool
things.

♪ I learned something cool
something cool today

I know it upside down
and inside out

I learned all about ♪

in that ship.

]] Ok.

]] Oh, he's moving. Yay!

]] You got it.

]] Hold on, arnie.

Almost there.

One more push...

[Grunts]
hey, I did it!

]] Ah. Great job, sid!

]] [Both imitate blast off]

This ramp you built is awesome.

]] Ah. Thanks, buddy.

]] Yeah?

]] It's getting late, so you and
arnie better blast off soon if

You're going to make it to the
moon and back before bedtime.

]] Oh, dad, you want to come
with us?

You can be a spaceman, too!

]] Really?

Oh, yeah! Ok.

I love rocket ships.

]] Great. Just sit right there.

]] Ok.

]] Excellent.

Ok, we're all on board.

The sid-o-rocket super-faster
blaster is ready.

Are you ready for takeoff,
co-pilot arnie?

Roger that.

Ready, spaceman dad?

]] Ready, commander!

]] Ok, countdown.

]] Blast off!

Whoa!

]] Yikes! A meteor!

]] Oh, look out for that
flying saucer, commander!

]] Wow!

What a fun trip to the moon!

But I couldn't have made it
without my co-pilot arnie,

Spaceman dad, and our ramp
that got arnie up into the

Rocket ship.

Hmm.

You know, with an inclined plane
you can push heavy things up,

And that got me thinking.

What else could I do with
an inclined plane?

Hmm.

Ok, I've got it!

Here's my
super-duper-uper-schmuper

Big idea!

I could build the world's
biggest sandwich!

And I could use a big inclined
plane to bring all kinds of

Different things higher and
higher to make the sandwich

Taller and taller!

My friends could help bring
lettuce and pickles up the

Inclined plane.

We could stack the sandwich with
cucumbers, cheese, some pickles,

And turkey, till we have the
biggest sandwich anyone has ever

Seen!

And the last thing is to put on
the top piece of bread.

It would be so fun to make, and
then me and my neighbors can all

Eat it!

Mmm! Yum!

]] That's a great sandwich.

]] Try the pickles.

]] And that's my
super-duper-uper-schmuper

Big idea.

[Applause]
