They fill it up, then cover it

Hmm. Well, I guess I do throw

Away my juice box and the straw

At snack time. And

I use a lot of paper towels when

I clean up a mess. And I threw

Out my toy robot this morning.

After breakfast, I'’m gonna

Find a way to make less trash!

And I'’ll start by taking flip

I eat these yummy cheese

Crackers at lunchtime, and they

Come in a wrapper, and I always

Throw it in the trash.

Right! And now we'’re going

To explore another way to make

Less trash.

Ok, scientists, I have a

What is all this stuff?

Trash!

Yes, these are all things

That some

People throw away. Now let'’s

Make some observations. What

Materials are

These things made from?

I see a glass jar.

Oh! There'’s a newspaper, so

That'’s paper.

Is that bottle plastic?

It sure is.

Ooh! Hey! Hey, I know what

That one is!

It'’s a cereal box! Ha!

I eat lots of cereal.

But I don'’t know what the box

Is made of.

Cereal boxes are made of

Cardboard.

Oh!

Now, I'’m sure you have seen

People throw

These things away, but

Everything here

Can be turned into new things,

Made out of the exact same

Material.

So that glass jar

Can be turned into

More glass jars?

Exactly.

And you can make more paper

Out of that newspaper?

You sure can. It'’s called

Recycling.

So recycling is making

Something new

Out of something old!

Yeah, so we make less trash!

You got it!

Susie, guess what?

I think we have a

Special trash can in our home

For recycling!

Oh! Oh, me, too!

But I never knew why we were

Putting all that stuff in there.

Oh, I'’m so glad to hear that

You recycle

At home. Well, today, you can

Our school recycle. We have to

Put all the things made out of

Glass into that first blue

All the plastic items have to

Made out of paper goes into the

Third container.

So--so everything in this

Big pile can be recycled?

It sure can!

Reuse, go ahead and keep it!

Plastic items go in here.

Cardboard is thick

Paper, so where does it go?

Right. And all the

Items made out of glass go into

This container.

Ok, keep sorting!

Cardboard, glass, plastic,

Newspaper, plastic...wait.

You'’re right, it's paper. This

Is interesting. The top part of

The package is plastic, and the

Bottom is paper. You can pull it

Apart...

And put the plastic part in this

Container

And the cardboard part in this

Container. Is this one plastic?

Hmm. Does the texture feel like

Plastic?

You'’re right, it's cardboard.

And this one belongs

In the plastic container.

You can draw pictures in your

Journals of the

Items you chose to keep and

Reuse. You kept

Some jars so you can make a

Drum set. Good idea!

Oh, you can put these plastic

Pieces together to make a great

Spaceship.

And what did you reuse?

Plastic--very creative.

Yeah, ok. Well, here'’s all

The stuff made out

Of paper. At first, I put the

Paper

Towel roll in the plastic group,

Because it doesn'’t really feel

Like paper, and it isn'’t flat

Like paper.

But then I learned that it'’s

Paper!

That'’s right, gerald. It's

Made out of

Cardboard, which is thick paper.

And I see that you kept

Something to reuse.

Yep!

I kept the cereal box because

I'’m gonna draw some eyes on

It and then glue on

These paper arms, and then it'’ll

Turn into a cereal monster!

Rowr!

Ha ha ha!

Oh, gerald, that'’s a great

Way to reuse the cereal box!

You'’re coloring a picture and

And you go, "oh, no! Yikes, I

Don'’t throw it in the trash. You

Can cut it up into little shapes

And make a collage!

Favorite shirt when it gets too

Small, because you can wear it!

Instead of using paper plates

Them away, use plastic plates

You can wash!

I finished a jar

Of the jelly I love most

At breakfast, I finished a jar

I spread the last drop of jelly

On a tasty piece of toast

Mm-hmm

I took that empty jelly jar

To the recycling bin

Said good-bye

To that jelly jar

Then I gently tossed it in

Here comes the recycling truck

Down the street once again

Let me tell you how it goes

The recycling truck took it

To the recycling facility

Where it got cleaned

Crushed, and sorted

Then sent to the glass factory

Put in a furnace

Mixed with limestone

And sand in a pot

And melted with all the other

Glass

In a liquid that was really hot

The glass was cooled

Then heated again

So it won'’t break

Then sent to different companies

To be filled with

The products they make

Could be a piece of my jelly jar

Came home to me again

Could be a piece of my jelly jar

Came home to me again

This time as a milk bottle

That will soon go back

In the recycling bin ♪

We found ways to reuse almost

We turned an old watering

Can into a flower vase. A

Sweater with holes was

Knitted into a scarf--actually,

Scarves! Ha ha ha!

And when

We had to replace our front

Door, instead of tossing it

Into the trash pile, I helped my

Dad sand it, paint it, nail on

Legs, and we turned it into our

Dining room table! Why, just

The other day, I saw a

Fancy-shmancy furniture store

Selling a table that used to be

A front door! Oh, how about

That?

My family was fancy-shmancy, and

We didn'’t even know it!

Wow, grandma! Your family

Reused almost everything.

Oh, you bet.

Hmm. And I just thought of a

Way to reuse

My broken toy robot so I don'’t

Have to throw it in the trash!

Less trash.

Ha ha ha! Whoo-hoo!

I'’m really proud of

The robot pen-holder I made for

Mom. She really, really likes

It! And I

Found a way to reuse something

So I made less trash!

Hmm. You know, if I found a way

To turn a broken

Robot into a pen holder, I bet I

Could build almost anything out

Of trash! Ok, I'’ve got it!

Here'’s my

Super-duper-ooper-shmooper big

Idea! I'’m going to start a new

Building company called

"The trash troupe builders!" My

Friends and I

Will build things made only out

Of trash. Do you

Need a new couch? Well, the

Trash troupe builders

Will find a broken wagon, put a

Bunch of old

Stuffed animals in it, and

You'’ll have a new, cozy couch!

How about a way to pass

Ketchup around

The kitchen table? The trash

Troupe builders

Will put a bicycle wheel on top

Of a broken toy

Robot, and then you put the

Ketchup on top, and spin it

Around the table! Whee!

And how about a new blanket?

We'’ll take all your

Baby t-shirts that don'’t fit and

Sew them together to make a

Soft new blanket!

With the trash troupe builders,

There will

Never be a reason to throw

Anything away! And that'’s my

Super-duper-ooper-shmooper big

Idea!

[Applause]

Hey, I just thought of a way

To reuse my

Bed in case it ever breaks. I

Could turn it into a rocketship!

Prepare for takeoff because I

Am sid the

Able-to-reuse-anything science

Kid!
