Because today I'’m eating

Breakfast outside! Whoo-hoo!

Ha! See, here'’s my toast and my

Yummy cereal and one of my

Favorite fruits, an apple. Ha!

[Chomp]

Mmm! That is one delicious

Apple. I'’m gonna have some more.

Eww! Seeds! Ugh! I almost bit

Right into them. Echh. Seeds

Are yucky. They don'’t do

Anything except get in the way.

Blah. You know, I wish apples

Didn'’t have seeds. Then I could

Just eat the whole thing

Without stopping? Ha ha!

Chef sid, it'’s time!

Ooh! I'’m coming, dad! I'm

Doing something else really

Special today, helping my dad

Make lunch! Ha ha! Hmm. But my

Lunch is not going to have an

Seeds. Ok, yucky seeds. You'’re

Coming with me.

Hmm. Well, now I just got to

Know why do apples have to have

Seeds?

Fancy sandwich!

First, we'’re going to spread

The mayonnaise like this.

Turkey and put it on the bread

Sid-delicious sandwich!

Ooh. Sure thing, chef sid.

Ah. Thank you.

Them a little peel. Ok. Here you

Are those white things? Oh, no!

More seeds! Aigh!

What'’s wrong with seeds, sid?

First, I found little seeds

In my apple at breakfast, and

They make it hard to eat the

Apple, and then now there are

Seeds in this orange, too. Oh,

Why do we need seeds anyway?

Well, see, those little

Seeds grow into great big trees.

Wait. I don'’t get it. How

Does that happen?

Hmm. Now that sounds like

Something you can investigate

At school, and lucky for you, I

Think your mom is about ready

To leave.

I'’m almost ready, too, and,

Seeds, you'’re coming with me.

Is that like a motorcycle?

Not quite, gerald. You see,

Every plant or animal has its

Own life cycle. It'’s the way

Living things change when they

Grow up and become bigger.

Ah. So these apple seeds

Have a life cycle, too?

They sure do. You know what?

I think we should all go

Science center!

Center. Ok, scientists. This

Big picture shows the life

Cycle of an orange tree. What

Observations can you make?

Well, first it starts off as

A teeny, tiny, little white

Seed.

Yeah, and then it grows--it

Starts to grow out of the

Ground like a little baby tree

With flowers on it. Ha ha!

Yeah. It'’s pretty small, but

Then it gets bigger and bigger

And bigger!

Until it looks like a big

Grownup tree. Oh, oh, and look!

There are lots of new oranges

Growing out of it.

Right, and those oranges on

The tree have seeds inside of

Them! What do you think those

Seeds will grow into?

Oh! More orange trees!

You got it, and that'’s the

Life cycle of an orange tree.

Wow!

Ok. Follow me. I want to

Show you something else you

Might find interesting.

Ok!

Just like many plants start

Out as seeds, many animals

Start out as eggs and also grow

Through a life cycle.

Ooh! This must be the life

Cycle of a frog. It starts out

As a small egg.

Yeah, and the eggs are so

Little, and there are so many

Of them. Look!

Yeah, and eggs turn into

That fishy-looking thing.

I think that'’s called a

Tadpole.

You'’re right, gabriela. So

Does that look like a frog yet?

Hmm. Nope because it doesn'’t

Have any legs.

Yeah, but it does have a

Long tail, so it can swim

Around. Sww, sww, sww, sww.

That'’s good because

Otherwise, it would just float

Like this. Glug, glug, glug,

Glug. Ha ha ha! But look, look!

See? Then it gets some little

Legs.

That'’s called a froglet.

Hmm. Its legs are so little.

I bet it can'’t hop very far.

Hop, hop.

Aw. But then the legs get

Bigger, and the tail

Disappears, and it becomes a

Grownup frog.

Ribbit, ribbit, ribbit,

Ribbit!

Ah. Great discovery! And

That'’s a frog's life cycle!

Hey, susie. Are all eggs the

Same size?

Yeah. Um, and the same color?

Good questions. Let'’s take a

Look at these eggs over here

And find out.

Ooh. Ok.

Ooh!

Hmm. Do you think these are

Frog eggs?

Uh...

No way! These are much

Bigger!

So what kind of eggs are

They?

Yeah.

Well, I think these eggs are

Gonna hatch any minute. I tell

You what. While wait, let'’s

Hey. You'’re a scientist. You

Can investigate life cycles at

A science center, too. Ha!

Ok, scientists. Let'’s

Explore the life cycle of a

Butterfly. First it lands on a

Plant and lays a small egg.

Then the egg hatches into a

Small caterpillar, which eats

Lots of leaves and grows into a

Big caterpillar.

When it'’s finished growing, it

Changes into chrysalis. While

It'’s hanging inside its

Chrysalis, the caterpillar

Slowly changes into a

Butterfly. At first, the

Butterfly looks small, but as

The wings fill with fluid, the

Butterfly gets bigger and

Bigger until it'’s a full-size

Butterfly that can fly away to

Start the life cycle all over

Again. Let'’s look at the life

Cycle of another creature. What

Animal do you think will hatch

Out of here?

A chicken! You'’re right! It

Takes a long time for a chick

To hatch out of an egg. First,

It uses its beak to poke

Through the shell. Then the

Head comes out and the legs,

And finally the whole body gets

Out of the shell.

The chick learns how to walk,

And it starts growing and

Growing, and eventually it

Grows into a big chicken, and

That is its life cycle.

Wow! The eggs hatched into

Little chicks. They were so

Cute! I can'’t believe how

Something so small can get so

Big!

Hey! I have an idea! Let'’s

Do a life cycle show!

Yeah!

We can all be different

Parts of a frog'’s life cycle!

Awesome!

Ok, ok. I'’ll go first.

Gerald, frog eggs can'’t grow

Into grownup dogs.

No! Frogs can'’t grow into

Grownup cows either.

Ha ha! Ok. Here'’s another

One. Hop, hop, hop, hop, hop.

Ribbit! I am a frog!

Hey. If you frogs are

Finished with your lunch, we

Have time to explore the

Again? They are so cute.

Well, the veterinarian is

Giving the chicks a checkup,

But we can explore the rest of

About the circle of life

A big mama turtle at the water

She walked to the beach

And made a nest

And there she laid her eggs

Here teeny, tiny turtle

Hatched in turtle bay, oahu

And began her journey

To the water in turtle bay

She walked bravely

Step by step

Across the rocks and sand

She finally made it to the water

And her journey began

The teeny, tiny turtle

From turtle bay, oahu

Started out on an adventure

And went off to see the world

She was growing fast

And seeing much

Far and wide she'’d roam

The years went buy

And time did fly

But she never forgot her home

One day she returned

To turtle bay, oahu

She walked to the beach

And made a nest

Some living things start out

As little seeds, and some

Living things hatch out of eggs!

They sure do. Hey. You know

What? There'’s a way to see

Inside of an egg before it even

Hatches.

Really?

Really! When I was a little

Girl, my grandpa was a farmer,

And he showed me what happens

If you hold a chicken egg up to

The light. You can see right

Through the shell. Farmers call

That candling because they used

To use a candle to see inside

Eggs to tell whether or not the

Little baby chick inside was

Healthy. I used to love helping

Out my good, old grandpa. I

Also loved seeing the sweet,

Little baby chick before it

Cracked out of the shell and

Moved on to the next part of

Its life cycle.

Wow! I never knew you could

See through an egg shell with a

Candle!

Lights up your life. Ha ha ha!

You know, we'’re gonna plant my

Apple seeds at school, but it'’s

Gonna take a long time until

They grow into apple trees, but

Maybe there'’s a way to speed up

Their life cycle. Hmm. Ok. I'’ve

Got it. Here'’s my

Super-duper-ooper-schmooper big

Idea! I'’m going to invent the

Life cycle super speedster

Machine. You can put any seed

Inside the machine, and it

Speeds up the life cycle

Superfast. Put in an apple

Seed, and you instantly get an

Apple tree. My new life cycle

Super speedster machine could

Be helpful, too. Let'’s say

You'’re making fresh orange

Juice for breakfast but you

Don'’t have any oranges. Well,

No problem. Just place some

Orange seeds into the life

Cycle super speedster machine,

And presto! You have a giant

Orange tree with oranges.

Squeeze, squeeze. And now you

Have fresh orange juice.

Mmm. Yummy.

That is delicious orange juice.
