CHRIS:
We're here on the continent
of North America.

MARTIN:
In the deciduous forests
of the eastern woodlands.

CHRIS:
In the middle of spring!

It's us, the Kratt Brothers!
I'm Martin.

I'm Chris, and one thing
every creature needs to do

is protect itself from both
weather and predators.

MARTIN:
Some animals have thick,
leathery skin.

CHRIS:
Some have protective homes
and dens.

MARTIN:
Some animals run fast
to protect themselves.

CHRIS:
Some have spiky spines.

MARTIN:
Or stinky spray!

But there is one group
of creatures

with a classic
super-tough defense.

One of the best of nature's
defenses of all.

CHRIS:
This is an Eastern box turtle.

It's one of the coolest little
turtles in the world,

and that's saying a lot,

because there are over
different species

of turtle in the world.

Turtles have given up speed
for protection.

They carry that heavy shell
on their back

so they can't move very fast.

And that shell is the key
to their success.

It's rock hard and super tough,
an incredible defensive shield.

CHRIS:
And of course,

he carries his protection
with him wherever he goes.

So if something scares him,
instant protection.

Now, this baby box turtle
is lucky.

His shell has hardened.

When box turtles hatch
out of the eggs,

their shells are very soft

and that is when they are most
vulnerable to predators.

Luckily, he's got
his defense kicked in.

But exactly how good
is the box turtle's defense?

Are there even any predators
that can get past his defense?

Imagine if we had
the incredible shell powers

of the amazing box turtle.

BOTH:

JIMMY Z:
So, you think you left
the Miniaturizer

around here somewhere?

MARTIN:
Yeah, somewhere around here.

This is where we used it last.

Don't worry, Aviva.

We'll find that Miniaturizer.

You'd better.

Otherwise, no more
mini-adventures.

Oh, no!

That can't happen.

I can't imagine
no more mini-adventures.

Not much space to land
down there.

But I'll go nice and easy
around those bushes.

we'll be right back to

Huh?

KOKI:
What just happened?!

Well, we found
the Miniaturizer.

Ah!

But I don't like being mini.

And I really don't like
the Tortuga being mini.

Let's get back
to normal size fast.

Look!

A box turtle!

Cool!

Let's check it out.

JIMMY Z:
No!

Let's not check it out!

Awesome!

Ah, it's so cool
being small like this

and being in
a box turtle's world.

Yeah, when you're mini,

a box turtle seems like
a kind of dinosaur!

Whoa!

Easy there, buddy!

Look out!

(Chomping)

Not the best hiding spot.

Box turtles love mushrooms.

CHRIS:
A turtle beak is like
a bird beak

with really sharp,
scissor-like edges.

Well, let's just keep offering
her food so she won't eat us.

MARTIN:
Oh, on it.

Box turtles'll eat
just about anything:

worms, beetles, fruit, nuts.

How about blueberries?

AVIVA:
We found a raspberry!

Ahhh!

Okay, that's great.

Now, can we get back
to normal size?

Okay, first, I have to
name our friend.

Hmm, Scissor-jaw.

Big Box, Shelly?

AVIVA:
I know the perfect name.

We named our headquarters
Tortuga,

which is the Spanish word
for "turtle",

so I think we should name
this box turtle

the Spanish word for "box".

Okay, what's the
Spanish word for "box"?

Caja!

Caja, that's it!

CHRIS:
Hold still, Caja!

(Chris grunting)

I've never rock-climbed up
a turtle shell before!

Uh, can we please get back
to the Miniaturizer?

Just a sec, Jimmy!

Wow, this shell is such
an awesome defense.

I know.

We sure picked a creature
with strong protection

to design
our headquarters after.

Yeah, we pretty much rocked it
on that choice.

I mean, nothing can get
through this defense.

Seriously.

What predator can eat
a turtle, anyway?

MARTIN:
Coyote! o'clock!

He's coming this way.

(All gasping)

You better get boxed in, Caja.

Yeow!

The shell hinge
closed on his hand.

Pull!

(All groaning, straining)

C'mon, Jimmy!

We gotta get outta here!

No fair!

I was the one who wanted to go
in the first place!

That is one really strong hinge.

Coyote, remember?

ALL:
Oof!

The bottom part of the shell,
the plastron,

actually has a hinge in it

that closes off
the head opening completely.

No other turtle can do that!

Yeah, good luck getting through
that shell, Mr. Coyote.

Not gonna happen.

Ahh... ahh..

Jimmy, shh!

You'll give us away!

Ahh... ahh...

(Sighing in relief)

Whew!

Ah-choo!

I'm allergic to mushrooms!

Uh-oh.

BOTH:
To the Tortuga!

Run!

(All screaming)

The shell will protect us!

(Tortuga rumbling)

MARTIN:
Uh-oh.

We're going for a ride!

CHRIS:
Away from the Miniaturizer!

JIMMY Z:
I told you we should've gotten
back to normal size earlier!

Look, Nolan!

A turtle!

Wow.

He's a turtle in a box!

You mean a box turtle.

Yeah, but he's in a box.

See, his shell is like a box
that closes up

and he's in there,
so he's a box.

Kind of like a jack in the box,
but he's a turtle.

Okay.

Actually, he's a she.

See, when the bottom of the
shell is flat, it's a girl.

If it was cupped like this,
it'd be a boy.

I wonder where she's going?

Maybe she's going to see
her babies.

Only one way to find out.

Let's follow her!

(Crew shouting)

ALL:
Oof!

Uh-oh, this isn't good.

He's going to try to eat us!

Put it in lockdown mode!

(Sighing)

Ahh! Lockdown!

Lockdown!

Lockdown secure.

(Groaning)

(Thudding)

Perfect.

So, we've got nothing
to worry about.

(All shouting)

Shh.

He's trying to get in.

He can try all he wants.

We designed this just like
a turtle shell.

Well, you know...

Yeah, we've got nothing
to worry about.

(Groaning)
Huh?

KOKI:
See, look at this.

A turtle can pull its legs
and head inside the shell,

like we just did.

Yeah, but--

KOKI:
And the shell is made
of a mix of bones

like the spine and ribs,

and special bony skin
all fused together.

So, we did the same thing.

The Tortuga shell has a
reinforced spine and rib joists.

Nothing's going to get in here.

(Gasping)

(Alarm sounding)

Uh-oh, the shell is stressed.

Whoa!

Whoa, oof!

It can't take much more force!

Can he get in, guys?

Well, that's what
we're trying to tell you!

Coyotes are one of
the few animals

that do prey on
box turtles sometimes.

(Gasping)

See?!

Ugh!

We've gotta fly outta here!

(Glass breaking)

Fast!

Jimmy, take it off lockdown.

On it!

Ahhh! Whoa!

Waah!

I'll tell you when.

Now!

JIMMY Z:

And take off!

(All cheering)

Whew, that was a close one.

Yeah, we're lucky

Yep, now we just have to get
back to that Miniaturizer.

(Engine sputtering)

I'm losing power, people.

Uh-oh!
Running diagnostic.

Oh, no!

The flight modulator took a
tooth puncture from the coyote.

We're going down!

Can you land her, Jimmy?

With a fritzed
flight modulator?

Hang on, people.

(All shouting)

ALL:
Ahhh!

Ahh!

MARTIN:
Oh, no.

Whoa!

(All shouting)

AVIVA:
Oww!
KOKI:
Ahhh!

(All groaning)

Nice landing, Jimmy.

Thanks.

systems disabled.

All we've got left
is your basic walking powers.

Walking powers?

I didn't even know
the Tortuga had those.

Because we never really have
a reason to use them.

It's pretty slow.

And it'll be even slower
now that we're mini-sized.

It'll take us days to get
back to the Miniaturizer

at turtle speed.

(All gasping)
A dragonfly!

Yeah!

You thinking what
I'm thinking, bro?

Oh yeah, I think I'm thinking
what your thinking.

I think we're thinking
the same thing.

BOTH:
Insert Dragonfly Power Disc.

BOTH:
To the Miniaturizer Rescue!

Oh, we'll be right back
with it.

BOTH:
Good luck, guys!

No dilly-dallying.

(Rumbling)

Do you feel that?

Yeah, feels like
a mini-earthquake.

BOTH:
It's a giant car!

Ahhh!

Jimmy, lockdown!

JIMMY Z:
Lockdown!

ALL:
Uh-oh!

We're box turtled in again!

Oh, don't go that way.

The road is really dangerous,
you know.

It has cars on it.

And they move really fast.

So, go back that way.
It's safer.

She really wants to go
across that road.

Hmm...

Okay, don't worry. We'll help
you get across safely.

Come on.

We'll take the pedestrian
overpass.

To the turtle rescue!

(Crew shouting)
Ahhhh!

We've gotta get across
this road,

or one of these cars
is going to smush us!

Okay, here goes.

Time to use those
walking powers.

(Koki shouting)

Easy does it, Jimmy.

Shell or no shell,
this is scary.

AVIVA:
I never realized
that crossing a road

is so dangerous for a turtle.

(All shouting)

Ahh!

Now I know why cars are the
biggest predator for a turtle.

KOKI:
Uh-oh, it's a bald eagle!

And he's coming straight for us!

JIMMY Z:
Oh, no!

(All shouting)

Oh, not again.

(All shouting)

Aidan, that turtle looks a lot

like the Wild Kratts'
Tortuga ship.

But it was tiny and being
carried by a bald eagle.

BOTH:
Nah.

Okay, little turtle, this is
the other side of the road.

Now, where were you going?

She's going to see her babies,
I just know it!

There it is!

Okay, this is our stop,
buddy.

Nice flying with ya!

BOTH:
Deactivate!

And back to normal size!

Okay, great.

Now, we just have to get
the Miniaturizer

back to the Tortuga.

(Beeping)

Blue Backpack here.

Go for Kratt brothers.

Hey, guys!

We just thought we saw
a mini-Tortuga

being carried off
by a bald eagle.

Impossible, right?

Well, not exactly impossible.

Uh-oh!

Where were they going?

Towards the river, I think.

We've gotta track them down,
fast!

Spread the word to all
the Wild Kratts kids.

We need everybody to use their
best turtle adventuring skill

to help find the Tortuga.

Okay, we're on it!

MARTIN:
Thanks, Aidan!

You thinking what
I'm thinking, bro?

I think we're thinking
the same thing.

BOTH:
We need some good turtle-finding
creature powers!

CHRIS:
Aha.

Activate Raccoon Powers!

Ha-ha, thanks, Bandito!

Gotta borrow your
turtle-finding instincts.

After all, raccoons do eat
turtles of all sizes

when they can find them.

To the Tortuga rescue!

MARTIN:
There you are.

Activate Peregrine Falcon
Powers!

Whoo, ha-ha-ha!

Yes, raptor vision!

To the Tortuga rescue!

There!
In the puddle!

It's a turtle,
but not the Tortuga.

GIRL:
I love how turtles soak in pools
to cool off during hot days.

So do I!

(Giggling)

C'mon, let's keep looking
for the Tortuga!

Is it the Tortuga?

Wait, raccoon!

Phew!

It's not the Tortuga!

But we got here
just in time for you.

I saw a raccoon eating
a box turtle once.

And getting flipped over
is dangerous, too.

Look, he can't right himself.

There you go!

Found a turtle,
but no Tortuga.

C'mon!

Oh, no.

He's probably carrying us
somewhere

to pick away at us
with that sharp beak.

The database says raptors
will eat baby turtles

and pick away an adult
sometimes.

Especially ones with
an injured shell, like ours!

Oh, no!

Golden eagles
in some parts of the world

even drop turtles onto rocks
just to break the shell.

Or she could figure out we're
not a real turtle and drop us!

Yup, the G-force of a fall
from this height

would definitely break
our shell.

Turtle shells are one of the
best defenses in nature,

but they do have their limits.

I can see everything down there,
except the Tortuga!

Hmm.

Whoa!

That's because it's up here!

I've gotta get the Tortuga
away from her.

Hey, excuse me, eagle.

How about you give me
that turtle?

Hey!

Ow!

What's Martin doing?

Trying to make the eagle
drop us, I think.

No!

We don't want to be dropped!

MARTIN:
It's not even a real turtle.

C'mon, let go!

Ow!

Isn't there a better way?!

MARTIN:
Peregrine speed!

(Crew shouting)

Quick!

Box turtle us in!

ALL:
Ahh!

MARTIN:
Uh-oh!

(Crew shouting)

Uh-oh,
they're falling too fast!

(Shouting, screaming)

Uh-oh.

CREW:
Ahhh!

I gotcha!

Whoa!

Oh, yeah!

Nice one, bro!

It's all in the grabby
raccoon hands!

You guys are lucky
I'm not a hungry raccoon.

Hey!

Hey, masked bandit!
This is my turtle!

Give it back!

JIMMY Z:
Oh! Not again!

CREW:
Oof!

AVIVA:
Well, at least it feels like
we're safely on the ground.

And the shell held.

(Door opening)
Huh?

Ahh!
Fire ants!

Oh, no.

They got in through
the lockdown hinges.

There's no box turtle defense
for that!

Yeah, but we have a defense.

Run!

ALL:
Help!

AVIVA:
Help!

JIMMY Z:
Help!

BOTH:
The Tortuga!

Help!

Chris, Martin!

The Tortuga's over here,
on an anthill!

Oh, no!

Ha!

Fire ants are another enemy
of box turtles.

They get into the closed shell
and k*ll a turtle.

Hmm.

Ah!

Gotcha!

Thanks!

Tortuga rescue!

Ha!

All ants out!

Deploy Miniaturizer!

Get us back to normal size!

ALL:
Now!

All clear.

Ready, guys?
And...

ALL:
Back to normal size!

(All cheering)

ALL:
Yay! We made it!

Woo-hoo!

Yeah, mission accomplished!

We found the Miniaturizer

and got the Tortuga back
to normal size.

And we found out that
a turtle shell sure is tough.

It can withstand a lot.

But there are some predators

that still try to get past
that defense,

if they're hungry enough.

All in all, I think we have
the right creature for the job

of protecting
the Wild Kratts home base.

And we found out
something else.

What?

We found out where Caja
was going!

Wow, she's making a nest.

CHRIS:
To lay her eggs in.

AVIVA:
She's going to have
baby turtles!

Told you she was going
to see her babies.

They should be hatching
right about now.

(Eggshell cracking)

Over there.

GIRL:
Oh, yeah, I see them!

KIDS:
Baby box turtles!

So, there are a few predators
who can sometimes get past

the amazing shell defense
of the box turtle.

Like coyotes.

MARTIN:
Bears.

CHRIS:
Raptors.

MARTIN:
Fire ants.

CHRIS:
And the most dangerous
of all, cars.

But no doubt about it,
the box turtle's defense

is one of the best
natural defenses

in the entire creature world.

The box turtle's shell is built

to withstand
incredible force.

If you take a look at an old
turtle shell like this one,

this top part,
that's called the carapace.

You can see the turtle's spine

is actually fused right into
the top of the shell,

and all these bony plates
and ribs in between them

add structure to the shell.

Now, this bottom part,

this is called the plastron
and it comes in two parts.

This is the bottom part,
and it fits right in here.

And this part is hinged to it,

so it can close whenever
the turtle wants it to

and nothing can get inside.

MARTIN:
Now, there are lots of cool
things about box turtles

besides that amazing shell,

and one of those
is watching a box turtle eat.

They eat all kinds of things.

Worms, grass, mushrooms
and much more,

and they really love fruit.

All kinds of fruit,

and got some fruit
for our buddy!

Now, it's time
for a Wild Kratts experiment.

Let's see which fruit
he likes best.

I think he's gonna go
for that raspberry.

Oh, I am picking strawberry!

Look at that sharp beak.

That can cut through fruit
and worms.

It's kind of like
a bird's beak.

Go, buddy, go,
what do you like?

Oh, he's heading towards
the watermelon.

Wait a second.

You're walking right by!

No!

BOTH:
Ooh!

MARTIN:
So that's what he was
hungry for, a worm!

Not all science experiments
work out like you think.

CHRIS:
Enjoy.
