MARTIN:
We're here in North America,

in the northern reaches
of the Eastern woodlands.

It's us, the Kratt Brothers!

I'm Chris.

I'm Martin, and today we're
doing something really fun.

We're looking for animals
named Martin!

(Laughing)

There's a creature who lives
here at the Ecomuseum.

A creature you've
just got to meet.

Meet the pine marten.

MARTIN:
What a creature.

For starters, love the name;
Pine marten.

And you didn't even name it.

I know!

(Laughing)

MARTIN:
Oh, she's on the move!

Such a great climber.

Oh, that's the number one
pine marten Creature Power.

Climbing ability.

Huh, Chris?
You impressed?

CHRIS:
Oh yeah!

MARTIN:
They not only are great at
climbing in the trees,

they climb at full tilt,
at full sprint.

They're racing
through the trees,

chasing after their favorite
prey, the red squirrel,

who's a great climber also.

Those red squirrels
are trying to get away.

The pine marten
has to be faster.

CHRIS:
Martin, I think
she likes you.

(Laughing)

(Gasping)

Oh, she's sniffing!

Pine martens are always on
the scent trail of their prey.

They use their nose for hunting.

MARTIN:
She sniffed out your hiking
boots pretty easy, Chris.

(Laughing)

Hey, I'm not sure
which Martin I like better.

This one or my brother?

Hey!

Oh, you're right, the
pine marten's way cooler.

CHRIS:
Wow!

That is one cool
climbing creature!

Named Martin, by the way, with
some amazing Creature Powers.

Nobody can run around
through the pine trees

like a pine marten can.

Yeah, imagine if we had
pine marten powers!

BOTH:
What if!

(Whistling)

(Grunting)

Whoa!
Aah!

Ow!

Oh, applesauce.

Yuck.

(Buzzing)

What's that?

(Yelling)

Whoa, hey!
Easy, buddy!

Oof!

Oh...

Oh no.

(Stammering)

Oof!

(Sighing)

(Groaning)

Ooh, that martin
is really bugging me!

Why?
What did he do?

Well, when I fell out of the
tree into a pile of old apples,

the apples smushed
into applesauce.

The applesauce got all over my
shirt which attracted the flies.

Ooh, that martin keeps
dive-bombing me.

I don't get it.

Why would Martin do that?

(Whistling)

Looks like he's just relaxing.

(Whistling)

And he actually whistles
pretty good.

What?
No!

He's bugging me!

Come on, I'll show you!

Watch.

(Whistling)

BOTH:
Whoa!

Yikes!

That's why!

That martin wants to
catch the flies,

and he keeps dive-bombing me!

Ooh!

Whoa, and he really
cuts it close!

(Laughing)

We thought you were
talking about your brother!

Yeah, but why are you calling
that swallow-like bird Martin?

Because that bird
is called a purple martin!

The purple martin is the biggest
swallow in North America.

Did someone say purple martins?

My avian namesake!

I love purple martins.

The only thing that could
make me love them more

is if they were called
blue martins!

But I see why
they call them purple.

Look at its color.

It's so pretty.

CHRIS:
Uh-oh, another dive!

Hit the dirt!

(Yelling)

Whoa, what a pull up!

What turning!

Wish I could do that
with the turtle ship.

Yeah, right!

It is such a fast flying bird.

It has to be in order to catch
insects out of the air.

Peregrine falcons are fast,
hummingbirds can hover,

but not many birds can pull off

the high speed aerial maneuvers
of my boy, the purple martin.

(Buzzing)

Yeah, when I look at it
that way,

that martin doesn't bug me
anymore, not at all!

Thanks, bro!

This one, sometimes.

Are you thinking
what I'm thinking?

That you can
stop hugging me now?

No, come on!

Don't you want
purple martin powers?

Yeah, of course!

Look how he moves.

I can hardly wait to
get up there with him.

ALL:
Whoa!

Okay, here it comes.

Oh please, make me
a purple martin suit!

Yeah, come on, please!

I've seen the light,
the purple light!

Yeah, please, purple please,
purple please...

BOTH: Purple please!

Okay, okay!

Aye-yi-yi,
you don't have to beg.

Why wouldn't I?

These birds are awesome,

and I love the science
of flight.

Aerodynamics,
wind pressure, lift.

It's like an avian fighter jet.

And these birds
have got it going on!

Give me some more observations.

KOKI:
Wings are for lift.

JIMMY Z:
Tail moves like a rudder.

CHRIS:
Quick wings flaps to gain speed.

MARTIN:
Tuck wings for rocket speed.

KOKI:
Spread wings...

JIMMY Z:
And tail...

CHRIS:
To slow down...

MARTIN:
And land...

BOTH:
Right in front of us!

Bros, that's not
the purple martin.

It's not?

No, it's not purple,
it's black.

But every other feature
is screaming purple martin.

The face, the wings,
the beak, the tail feathers.

That's it!

The feathers.

I can explain this one...
with this.

With a triangle?

Yeah, Jimmy, it's a prism.

Watch, sunlight is made up
of different colors.

We can't see them, but when you
shine a light through the prism,

it's refracted,
meaning it splits

and you can see the colors, like
a rainbow.

Some bird feathers
can do the same thing.

When little or no light is
reflected, it looks black.

But if you move or more light
hits the feathers,

it's refracted
and produces color!

ALL:
Whoa!

JIMMY Z:
That's pretty purplish.

Hmm, I'm seeing a lot of
blue in that purple.

Well, if it's called
a purple martin,

the suit has to be purple.

Sorry, no blue or green today.

BOTH:
Huh?

Is she serious?

Or just kidding?
(Chuckling)

Listo!

Aw, who cares?

Let's just...

BOTH:
Activate purple martin powers!

Woo-hoo!

Whoa, check out these wings!

Yeah, this is one slick suit.

And... jet black.

Where's the color?

You're standing in the shade.

Get in the sun.

Yeah, let's refract some light
on this martin power suit.

Oh yeah!

I'm green!

A green martin.

Wait a minute, I'm green.

And so I'm still
Chris... I think.

I'm blue!

I don't believe it!

This is even better
than a purple martin.

I'm a blue martin!

Uh, I'm a green martin?

Okay, wait a second,
I like the green part,

but I'm not so sure
about the martin part.

(Laughing)
Funny, bro!

Any color martin's
are awesome.

Okay, being a martin,
this is going to be

one confusing
creature adventure.

(Chirping)

Purple martins on the move!

Wait up, bro!

Follow those martins!

To the hoverbikes!

C'mon, Chris.

Oh, I mean, green martin.

Oh boy, this is going to be
a tough creature adventure.

MARTIN:
Come on, green martin!

CHRIS:
Let's stay on his tail.

At least these powers
are awesome!

Wow!

Amazing!

Look at all the purple martins!

I think maybe they're
catching bugs over the river.

Where are the bros!

Let's see.

Purple...
Blue... Green!

Follow that pattern:
purple, blue, green.

ALL:
Purple, blue, green!

This is the perfect hunting
grounds for the purple martin.

Insects are hatching
out of the river.

And today it's...

Mayflies!

Whoa!

Out of the air!

CHRIS:
Off the surface!

MARTIN:
He takes a sip of water
to wash it down.

Wow!

Oof!

These powers are so awesome,
you can't help catching insects.

Cool!

MARTIN:
There, I heard you!
You admitted it.

Martin powers are cool.

Yeah, well, the bird
martin powers, I mean.

Hey, check it out.

(Chirping)

Why are they all going
over to the riverbank?

Let's find out.

It's a purple martin colony.

This is rare.

What do you mean rare?

There's so many of them!

Well, yeah, they're
colonial nesters.

But it's very rare
to find them nesting

in natural cavities anymore.

KOKI:
Check it out.

Today, purple martins
on the East Coast

only nest in gourds and houses
put out for them by people.

Martin's right.

He should be; they're
talking about Martins.

(Chirping)

Wow, purple martins are so nice.

Like Martins usually are.

Oh boy, here we go.

Look how they all get along.

Nesting so close to each other.

CHRIS:
Oh, look.

One's feeding
a mayfly to a chick!

(Laughing)

He eats just like me.

Hey, little buddy.

Oh, naming you is gonna be easy.

I'll call you...

Oh no, don't do it, brother!

Why not?

It's perfect.

(Chirping)

Please, no!

Martin Junior!

(Groaning)

How much more of this
can I take?

I think that's
a really good name.

Hmm, I would've
preferred Martinito!

Hang in there, Chris.

(Chirping)

Hey, Martin Junior,
where are you going?

There's something
happening outside.

Guys, can you find out
what's alarming the colony?

AVIVA:
There!

JIMMY Z:
On the cliff.

Some kind of weasel!

Yes, something other than
an animal named Martin!

You're right, that's definitely
a member of the weasel family.

Some kind of mustelid for sure.

But what kind?

Going in for a closer look
to get an ID.

Oh no... no...

Please no... anything but that!

I don't believe it!

No!

(Moaning)

What's wrong, Chris?

It's a pine marten!

Did you say Martin?

Oh brother.

What?

Another animal called Martin?

This is my lucky day!

Hanging out with the other
Martins of the creature world!

Something tells me this is
NOT going to be my day.

Come on, Chris!

And now we have
a new creature mission!

Let's go!

Well, I can't resist
a creature mission!

Our mission: follow that marten
and get pine marten powers!

Hey, any creature adventure
is a good creature adventure.

So why not?

Sights set on pine marten.

I'm going in.

MARTIN:
That a boy, Chris!

Whoa, that was close!

Hmm, where'd he go?

Doing another pass!

Hmm.

Where could he be?

(Squeaking)
Huh?

Whoa!

(Yelling)

Ow!

(Groaning)

Huh?

Hey, you accidentally put on
my Creature Power Vest!

(Gasping)
Wait!

Hey squirrel, wait!

(Squeaking)

What?
You ran into me!

(Rustling)

Uh-oh.

Oof!
(Yelling)

Oops, missed the branch!

(Yelling)

Well, I'm glad this is
a climbing adventure.

Hey!

Hey, hey squirrel!

Come back with my
Creature Power vest!

(Yelling)

Gotcha, bro!

Martin, forget about me!

You've got to catch that
squirrel and get

my Creature Power vest back.

I won't be able to activate
any Creature Powers without it.

(Moaning)

I'll be Creature Powerless
forever!

It'll be okay, bro.

I'm going after that squirrel.

Hey guys, take care of Chris!

(Yelling)

(Moaning)

A squirrel stole
my Creature Power vest.

(Sobbing)

Wow, this is not Chris's day.

We should take him back
to the Miniaturizer.

And get him real size.

This is a rough day
for my brother.

I've got to get his vest back.

So where is that
vest-snatching squirrel?

Hmm, there's a pine marten,
but no squirrel.

She could be anywhere within
this coniferous forest.

The best way to find
the squirrel wearing

Chris's power vest...

...is to use pine marten powers.

Right, Aviva?

You're right.

To help Chris, I'll make you
a pine marten power disk.

Wahoo!

(Laughing)

First purple martin powers,
and now pine marten powers.

Oh, is this my birthday!

Well, enjoy it, Martino!

And while you're at it,

make some observations
of the pine marten.

And get Chris's
Creature Power vest back.

Oh, this is the worst day ever.

(Moaning)

And pronto!

That's a - .

Locking in on pine marten.

Hey, Marten.
(Laughing)

Can it get any better than this?

CHRIS:
Oh boy...

Aw, cheer up, Chris!

Yeah, when something's
not going your way,

it's best to try and do
something to make it better.

Yeah, like get back out there
and get your vest back.

Okay, brr, okay.

Shake it off.

Yeah!

I'm gonna save my
Creature Power vest!

I'll come too, and I'll bring
my mobile invention kit.

I can program as we go.

All right, I'll drive!

AVIVA:
Yeah, that's better.

I shouldn't really
program and drive.

Let's motor.

We've got to get
my Creature Vest back

from that slippery squirrel.

Aw, it doesn't get
any cuter than that.

Aww!

CHRIS:
Hey, Martin!

Hey guys, look!

I just found
a little pine marten,

and I'm just thinking
about what to call him.

And I'm gonna name you...

Lil' Marty.

(Groaning)

That's cute, Martin.

But give me some observations
I can use for the programming.

On it!

Hmm, claws for climbing.

Check!

Hmm, what else?

(Chuckling)

Looks like it's
playtime with mom!

A long lean body that
makes him look like

a furry four-legged snake

sliding lightning fast
through the trees.

Check!

Whoa, nice leap!

Their balance is incredible,

when running on branches and
leaping from tree to tree.

That balance is the main thing.

It's the thing that makes it
possible for the pine marten

to chase his favorite prey
who are also great at

running through the trees:
squirrels!

Cornering them in the trees.

That's how pine martens
catch red squirrels.

Pine marten power disc
is complete!

Oh, perfect timing!

Activate pine marten powers!

Wow, pine marten powers
are awesome!

I feel like
running through the trees.

Aww, I wanna do that!

(Sniffing)

And another power
I didn't expect.

My nose is finely tuned.

(Sniffing)

I smell squirrels.

Well, follow that nose
right to the squirrel

who stole my
Creature Power vest.

I need it back!

You got it, bro!

(Sniffing)

Red squirrel that way!

(Grunting)

Oh, this is not
a good day for me.

I lose my Creature Power vest

on a day we're adventuring
with those climbing powers!

Hang in there, Chris.

The day isn't over yet.

MARTIN:
Heh, strange, he kind of
reminds me of Chris.

Oh, and that's a good thing,

because I have a lot of
experience tackling my brother.

Hey, Chris!

Your vest is heading your way!

All right!

Come on vest, right over here!

Oh ho, yes.

Gotcha!

Huh?

MARTIN:
I'll get him!

Ah, don't go in there!

(Laughing)

(Yelling)

Steady!

(Laughing)

Huh?
Aah!

No!
(Laughing)

Don't go in there!
Stop!

(Laughing)

Please stop!

Wait, my vest!

Uh-oh.

(Yelling)

Aww, I'm the climbing brother.

Not the swimming brother.

This is definitely not my day.

(Laughing)

Come on, Chris.
Hang in there.

Day's not over yet!

Okay, now I've got you
in an isolated tree.

I think this is
the end of the chase.

No squirrel can leap that far.

Now that's pine marten powers!

Hey, Chris, brother o' mine.

Look what I found!

Yes, my vest!

You're back!

My Creature Power Vest!

I'm never taking you off again.

All right, still
a little daylight left.

Come on, let's
get back out there

and adventure with
the other Martins.

Thanks, but I've
had enough for one day.

I'm just going to
hold onto my vest,

go into the Tortuga,
lie down,

and think of some animals
that have Chris in their name.

Hmmm, hippopotochris?

Nope.

Rhinocochris?

Nope.

(Laughing)

We'll help Chris think of
Chris animals tomorrow.

Because isn't today a day
for the Martins or what?

(Laughing)

(Laughing)

Martining free and in the wild!

CHRIS:
So, summer is here,

and there are a lot of
great things about summer.

One of the best is it's
purple martin nesting season.

And we've got a whole colony
of nesting purple martins

right here!

CHRIS:
Awesome!

Males and females.

MARTIN:
Yeah, the males
are the black ones

that when the sun
hits them just right,

they shine a bluish purple.

That's why they're called
a purple martin.

Well, that's why
they're called purple,

but I'm still not sure why
they're called martin.

But I like it!

They like to sit and
rest on their balconies.

(Laughing)

MARTIN:
They do.

Look, there's a pair
right next to each other,

the male and the female.

They've got a nest of eggs,
or maybe chicks already.

CHRIS:
Each pair of purple martins
has it's own hole,

it's own nesting chamber
in the house.

And they're working together
to raise chicks.

It's a short summer season, so
they're really, really busy.

They've got to feed up
their hatchlings

so that they're ready to fly.

So they're strong and healthy.

So they can make their migration
south to the rainforest,

to the Amazon rainforest which
is where they spend the winter.

Purple martins
are cavity nesters.

They nest in holes.

Sometimes natural holes, but
more and more they like to live

in the nest boxes that
humans set up for them.

And they have to be nesting
together in groups.

The more purple martins
there are,

the more successful their
nesting season is going to be.

Whoa, here they come!

Purple martins
flying all around!

(Laughing)

That is an amazing flying power!

CHRIS:
Purple martins
are masterful flyers.

They're built for
high speed turns and dives.

That's because they chase
insects on the wing.

They pick them off
in mid-flight,

so they have to turn quick
to catch their prey.

So purple martins are a bird

with some amazing
Creature Powers.

Well of course,
they are named Martin.

(Laughing)

Hey, keep your eyes peeled for
this amazing purple martin

this summer and keep on
creature adventuring!

We'll see you on
the creature trail!
